Open Question: Loading drivers and software to laptop?
I recently replaced a hard drive to my Gateway laptop. I had some issues loading the recovery disc but finally made it through. I am in the process of loading back the drivers and I am having problems loading some of the controllers drivers, when I go to properties it says everything is working. This driver is for my wireless card. Also I can not down load a anti-virus because of corrupted files message pops up and cancels the install, and I tried to install my windows office 2003 it goes half way through before it says files corrupted. Any ideas, I originally had problems booting the cpu found the cooling fan was bad and causing overheating, replaced the fan but this is when I started having software issues, cpu wouldn't boot up, this is when I decided to changed the hard drive. The disc is marked Recovery disc, I was able to load windows xp, media edition on to the new hard drive. I had to manually loaded the drivers.

Ok some days before I had this problem with my PC that it just wouldn't start,I mean it boots then shows "We are sorry for the inconvenience but windows was unable to boot because of certain hardware or software problem" and it shows 3 or 4 options like "safe Mode", "Last Known good configuration" "Start windows normally" and it would go off and restart again.
I removed all the plugs and wires and reattached them but it was useless.Next day the engineer came & he booted it using a windows xp cd and formatted the c drive as he said files were corrupted. On that day it worked completely fine until I attached my pen drives to the PC.
I had escan installed and it scanned the pen drives there were many files infected with viruses and it showed that it has deleted those infected files.
I even scanned th entire system i.e C ,D ,E drive .
So what do you think is the problem with my PC? The wires and switchboard are absolutely fine as I had it checked with an electrician.
Next day I went to nearby cafe and scanned all my pen drives with avast anti virus it didn't detect a single virus or infected file.
I have Windows XP Pro installed and server 2003.
SO what is the problem with my PC?
Guys Please read the entire question properly and answer .
Thank you all in advance
moreVoting Question: Should I stick with PCs or get a Mac insted?
My 2003 Hp PC desktop has come down with a massive case of viruses and is practically unuseable. Everytime I start it up it freezes or the screen goes blank. It was an OK computer at first but the last couple of years were terrible. I now have to resort to my iPhone for email and what not. Never owned a mac before but I heard they are better with viruses. The anti virus software on the PC actually caused the viruses and firefox. It's a shame that it almost unusable because I just got new memory cards for it. Should I bring it to best buy and have them clean it out although it is an old computer and it could get pricey or should I get a brand new one. If so what would be a better bang for my buck. A mac or PC?
moreResolved Question: Cant get my Mail working properly!!?
Hi all,
Having a problem with my e-mails I’m using Microsoft office 2003 as a mail client for an eircom.net pop 3 account, the problem is mails not being sent or received to and from only some addresses there is no common factors with the addresses such as domain names as well as this, the problem is intermittent, some days they will get through other days they wont. My office pop 3 and SMTP settings are correct and I have tried sending mails from the web-mail based service just to make sure with no luck. I am receiving no messages from mailer daemons indicating that there were any problems with deliveries. I have also scanned my system for any malicious software even though I thought it was an unlikely cause.
If anyone could offer any help it would be much appreciated, it is a very frustrating problem due to the facts that it is so intermittent, this is a business address and changing my address is not really an option.
Thank you in advance,
Ger.
P.S Don’t think it will matter but just in case the OS is XP service pack 3 the anti-virus software is Avast! Pro 4.8 and Malwarebytes.

moreResolved Question: How can I fix an unstartable computer?
Earlier today, my computer came down with some sort of virus. It pretended to be an anti-virus software, but I had seen stuff like that before. It cut off access to the Task Manager and messed up my desktop, plus it couldn't be shut down. I ran a McAfee virus scan and got rid of everything that it flagged, but the fake program remained. I set my computer to restart in Safe mode and shut it down.
Unfortunately, now my computer won't start up properly. It goes through the initial boot process, but then I get the BSoD. Attempts to change my start-up options do not work. I really need to get this laptop working again. I am running Windows XP, 2003 edition, on a Gateway laptop. Any tips would be helpful.

Our comp. works fine now, but now I need to open an assignment from the external hard drive that used Microsoft Word Processor, but the program is not on our computer. Hello all,
Two days ago, I noticed that my Exchange Server was sending out spam emails. It was a nightmare!!! I had to disable Outgoing mail and deleted all of the spam emails. I went into my logs and identified the spam email and IP address. In Exchange, I blocked both the Ip and email address of the spam. Of course I was Blacklisted, but the issue is being resolved. My question is, what can I do to make sure that this doesn't happen again.
My current setup:
1. Server OS - Windows SBS 2003 with Exchange 2003
2. Using the Version DSL built in Firewall, I have the settings to Typical and I am using Port Forwarding.
3. Anti Virus software - Avast
4. Checked MX Look up and my server doesn't have an Open Relay.
5. I update my server evey weekend.
Thanks again for the help.

I have an HP Pavilion 7936, which I started using since 2003. In the middle of updating a newly installed anti-virus software, and maybe Windows XP auto-update, it turned itself off, (don't know why, because I was using my laptop). When I press the power on button, nothing happens, no beeps, no sounds, nothing. The computer LED light is on at the back, when the power cord is connected, so I know electricity is getting to the computer.
What happened? Why won't it turn on?

http://www.3com.com/products/en_US/detai...
My network is for a small doctor’s office and I am certain it will not grow beyond 5-7 people. I will also be using cat 5 wiring, Kaspersky Anti-virus, and I am thinking about using either Microsoft Ftp publishing (comes with Windows Server 08) for file transferring and maybe Filezilla or WinSCP for remote access
The odd thing is that my main software program (EClinical Works) specs a minimum of: Quadcore Xeon 1.4 Ghz, Windows Server 2003/2008, 4GB of memory, at least 16GB (OS) + 30GB (Data)
But the oddest thing is that they say the server with this EClinical software shouldn’t run an active directory, RAS, and/or terminal service.
Will I need two servers because the one with my software on it doesn’t want an active directory run on it? I’m also a little confused about how the file sharing will work with the Network Attached Storage device, does Windows Server have something in it to implement this? Also from a security standpoint what would I need to address in Windows if I have a NAS, will Windows file sharing be secure between the users/server/clients?
My point with the NAS was to save money and separate the data from the server processor (only OS+apps)…also the cheapest servers on Dell have about a 2.4GHZ processor and a 160GB hardrive for about 1600….would buying a nice desktop and putting Windows Server 2008 on it be a better option??
I looked on cnet.com and certainly found that the Buffalo Terastation Home Server NAS (2TB) is my best option...but its uses mirroring and spanning instead of RAID and its write performance is slow due to its RAID 5 configuration. Should I be concerned?
The biggest point is that I want my system to be low maintenance, easy to setup, and my switch to be un-managed (aka no IT expert needs to be around to configure the ports…etc)I've heard that the remote device can be a security issue....but I've looked around and it seems difficult to find a server (such as from dell or HP) that has 2 Terabytes of redundant (RAID 1) hard drive space. Also how much onboard memory would I need to have on one server that would someday have 2 Terabytes of memory...wouldn't that be really expensive? I also thought separating the data from the OS+apps would result in better performance and a server that is easier to manage and the server wouldn't have to cache data storage. The NAS emulates a windows share (CIFS). Also I will contact the software company about the active directory thing because I don't want to have to buy two servers that ridiculous.

Also how much onboard memory would I need to have on one server that would someday have 2 Terabytes of memory...wouldn't that be really expensive? I Also though separating the data from the OS+apps would result in better performance and a server that is easier to manage and the server wouldnt have to cache data storage. The NAS emulates a windows share (CIFS). Also I will contact the software company about the active directory thing because I don't want to have to buy two servers that ridiculous. Also I was thinking FTP or something to access this network remotely.

moreResolved Question: Microsoft Word Help!?
I have MS word 2003 and I save a file and close it askes me everytime to save the template and i say yes and saves it as the global template.
then whenever i open the file gives me this message error.......
You may be encoutering this message because an anti-virus program is not allowing the file to open. This can be caused by one of two conditions. Either the anti-virus program needs to be updated (due to a compability problem with this application) or there is a virus in the file but the anti-virus program cannot properly remove or process the virus it has found.
In either case, the file you are attempting to open should be treated as infected until you have updated your anti-virus software to the latest updates available from the vendor. All major anti-virus software manufacturers have created updates to address known compatibility problems with Office applications. They also usually provide a virus signature file that is available for download from the Internet and must be updated regularly to properly scan for all known forms of viruses.
If you are experiencing this problem on a computer where a new version of anti-virus software was recently installed from a CD-ROM, it is advised to connect to the Internet and download the latest updates available from the vendor.
If you are experiencing this problem on a computer where the latest version of the software is installed, all signature files are up to date, and the file will not open (but other files do) then it is very likely the file is infected with a virus and the anti-virus program cannot remove the infection.
There is also the possibility the file is corrupt (damaged) and cannot be properly handled by either the anti-virus software or the affected Office application. In this case, it may be necessary to attempt recovery of the file using the related recovery utilities that may be available with the application (not all applications have file recovery or repair capabilities).
For more information about this issue, see the Microsoft Knowledge Base article 835404.

moreResolved Question: What does this mean?
I work in a company where we receive desktop "images" on a DVD, so we never receive software CDs (Win XP, MS Office 2003, Adobe Acrobat, Anti Virus, etc, etc.) I turned on a PC today and received the following message
C: \i386\System32\ntoskrnl.exe could not be loaded
Error Code 4
What does this actually mean? I don't have a Windows XP CD so I can do a repair, and can't even log in in safe mode either. I do have a program that wipes the drive completely, I did that thinking it would fix it, but after completely wiping the drive, I restarted PC and got the same error message.
Any help would be appreciated. Kind of confused what it means. If I wiped the drive of it's contents, why would I be receiving a message from the i386\system 32 folder ?
Thanks in advance

Bought HP4000 in Hong Kong in 2003. It has worked well until April this year - spyware and trojan virus now on it. Plus the virus/spyware will not allow download or connections to other free download anti virus sites. If re-load is answer - which XP (e.g home edition, sp2...etc)? ........ don't want Vista yet!

moreResolved Question: Why is my computer slow? It is a decent spec and It does not have any virus's or spyware/Malware!?
I am wanting to get to the end of this but do not know how! My computer just seems sluggish and I just don't know what the problem could be.I want it to be as fast as it was when Ifirst installed XP if possible!
Here is some info about my computer
1024 mb ram - 160 gb hdd - pentium 4 ht (hyper threading) - 550w power supply - spire cpu cooler (heatsink) i think its for p4 775 - 64mb graphics adapter (is this poor even though i do not play games? ) - windows xp home service pack 2 - broadband connection (even though irrelevant to pc speed itself)
A few programs used on the computer
AVG anti-virus - Firefox - WMP 11 - Quicktime - Nero 6 - Spybot S&E - BT applications for my broadband - IE7 - Registry Mechanic - Zone Alarm Firewall - Microsoft Office 2003 - Winamp
I constantly run checks for spyware and virus's on my computer but never find any, even on other software brands.
I want to solve the problem, as my pc's performance is not living up to.
I will appreciate your responseI bought the computer built last Christmas.I have tried Norton as that came with my BT broadband package, but it led to further disasters!svchost seems to be high on ram usage as that can exceed to 100mb, and the same with internet explorer 7.ha, i don't think i need a new computer already? I am running at 3.2 GHZ!I defragment every fortnight!
moreResolved Question: I need help with Microsoft word 2003?
There is more to it, but It won't all fit in here.I really have no clue what to Do.And I need help, I Write storys and this problem is blocking me
moreResolved Question: Is Norton Corportate edition the best for anti virus on business servers?
My company is installing new servers and a new network on 2003 SBS (several sites, about 50 users). I need to figure out what anti-virus software to use on both servers & clients. I would think Norton is best, but I heard there have been a lot of problems with it. Any ideas?
