Anti Best Suite Virus Questions asked

Resolved Question: Question about "Secure Logon" (CTRL + ALT + DELETE) and anti-malware programs....?

I have a Vista laptop, and I want to make it as secure as possible (I am so afraid to go on any sites other than things like my university's student webpage, wikipedia, and yahoo answers, etc. Even tmz.com I'm afraid of, LOL) because my old computer got infested with viruses and completely crashed, most likely due to my mother clicking on ads. Anyway, I want to know the purpose of the "Secure Logon" (CTRL + ALT + DELETE) please. My uni's computers make us do this... is there any advantage of doing it on my home laptop too? Also, as far as antimalwares go, which of these is the best: McAfee, Norton, ESET, Kapersky, Trend Micro, or Bit Defender? I'm talking about the full 'security suite' versions, i.e. with the firewalls, antispyware if available, etc., so not just the antiVIRUS. I don't really feel comfortable using the free ones.... Thanks so much! more

Resolved Question: Which is the best free internet security suite?

i want anti-virus, firewall and anti-malware all in one suit for free. I don't like the idea of installing seperate firewall, separate antivirus and then a seperate antispyware. The problem with that is that, firewall keeps asking too many questions and gives alerts about anti-spwyare and anti-spyware. If its all in one-suite, then firewall doesn't ask anything about antivirus or antispyware. So which is the best free suite? more

Voting Question: Toshiba Satellite L450 Laptop, "Windows Preparing For Configuration" screen on for hours?

Dear all, I just bought a Toshiba Satellite L450 Laptop (with Windows 7 Home Premium) from Best Buy 2 days ago. I setup the Norton Anti-Virus, setup the Wifi, changed the theme to make it feel more like my own computer, etc. Once I did all these things I then continued to use the laptop for a few more hours to check email, facebook, myspace, played a game, then shut the system down. When I shut it down, Windows restarted, then a screen popped up stating "Windows Preparing for Configuration". After this screen stayed on for a few hours, I manually shut it down. In the morning, I turned on the laptop like normal, and again the screen stating "Windows Preparing for Configuration" came up again, and has been on this screen for about 2 1/2 hours now. :( Is this normal??? I asked a friend about it and he suggests that since its brand new and I hadn't restarted the computer once I loaded all the programs & internet, that the system just needs to boot up everything properly. When I talked to Toshiba tech support, they said that its is normal to take up to maybe 1 hour, but they have never experienced a customer waiting for over 2 hours. Is there something I did wrong?? Yesterday I had to take care of a small tracking cookie w/ Norton Anti-Virus. Also I've added some programs from Adobe Suite 2.0.. could that have something to do with it?? Please Help! Any information is appreciated!Yeah....thanks for nothing WC.. you obviously didnt read when i mentioned i shut it down manually bc it would not give me the option to shut down the system.. Especially seeing as i ALSO mentioned that its a brand new computer so that it shouldn't do the usual "freezing" as all computers do, just yet.. Anyhow, turned out to be some weird fluke with Windows 7 Home.. it took 3 1/2 hours for the system to configure.. its starts up fine now which leads me to believe the system was doing its initial setup, eventhough it shouldnt take more than 15-30mins.. more

Resolved Question: Question about anti-virus and computer protection software?

If a anti-virus software has scanning components for spyware and malware, then could those components clash with other software such as Spybot, SuperantiSpyware and Ad-Aware? If you don't understand the question, I reworded it for a better understanding: can an anti-virus suite (NOD 32, Avast, AVG) work along side software like Spybot and Ad-Aware and the software will not cause problems to each other? What I mean by problems... I mean something like the detection rates and false positives rate of NOD 32 and Spybot could make each other screwy or something. 10 free points for best answer, so plz answer! If you still don't understand my question, take a look at the best answer for this question. Resolved Question: Here is some Internet Information?

ThreatsHow does the Internet create security risks for my computer? The Internet works by allowing one computer to send information to another computer across a network of worldwide computers. Rather than going directly to the intended computer, data often passes through several intermediate computers. Each intermediate computer has the potential to see the contents of data being transmitted — creating a security risk. Other security risks can be created from files and programs downloaded to your computer or sent via e-mail. Some programs, called 'viruses' are written to intentionally damage your computer and the data stored on it. Make sure security updates for your operating system (Microsoft Windows or MAC OS X for example) are consistently installed on your computer. In addition, ensure your firewall, antivirus, and anti-spyware software are up-to-date with the latest definitions. Does your computer lack antivirus protection? The Charter Security SuiteTM provides complete protection for your compter. In addition to its award winning virus protection, The Charter Security Suite includes a firewall, anti-spam, anti-phishing, anti-spyware, and parental controls. Best of all, The Charter Security Suite is included at no additional cost for all 5 Mbps and faster Charter High-Speed® Internet connections. Click here to learn more and to download The Charter Security Suite. What is 'malware'? 'Malware' is a generic term used to describe viruses, spyware, adware, Trojan horse, rootkits, worms or any other program with malicious intent. What is a 'virus'? A virus is a program or piece of code that is installed and runs on your computer without your knowledge. Viruses can also replicate themselves and are often designed so that they automatically spread to other computer users. Viruses can be transmitted as attachments to an e-mail, as downloads, or via diskettes or CDs. Some viruses are harmless, but most can be quite damaging by erasing data or causing your hard disk to reformat. What is a 'worm'? Worms are a self-replicating virus that does not alter files but resides in active memory and duplicates itself. Worms most often use parts of an operating system that are automatic and usually invisible to the user. It’s common for worms to be noticed only when their uncontrolled replication consumes system resources, slowing or halting other applications and traffic. « Back to Top What is a 'Trojan horse'? A Trojan horse is a malicious code that is contained inside seemingly harmless programs or data. The purpose of a Trojan horse is to gain control of the computer and execute whatever it had been program to do. Many Trojan horses are designed to damage data on your hard drives, send back personal information, or corrupt your hard drive. In one celebrated case, a Trojan horse was programmed to find and destroy computer viruses. A Trojan horse may be widely redistributed as part of a computer virus. What is 'adware'? Adware is any software application in which advertising banners are displayed while the program is running. The authors of these applications include additional code that delivers the ads, which can be viewed through pop-up windows or through a bar that appears on a computer screen. What is 'spyware'? Spyware is software installed on your computer without your knowledge that gathers information such as surfing habits, for later retrieval by advertisers and/or other interested parties. It can record and send through the Internet your keystrokes, history, passwords, and other confidential and private information. It is often sold as a spouse monitor, child monitor, surveillance tool, or a tool for spying on users to gain unauthorized access. It can enter a computer as a virus or through installation of a new program. What is a 'rootkit'? A rootkit is a set of processes or files that installs itself on your system without your knowledge or permission. Rootkits attempt to hide from antivirus, anti-spyware, and system management utilities. Originally, rootkits were used on UNIX® based systems for benign purposes. Today however, rootkits may be used to create a backdoor into your system for malicious purposes - such as intercepting information sent from your system, logging your keystrokes, using your system for denial of service attacks, and other deviant activities. Rootkits exist on multiple operating systems including UNIX®, Linux, Solaris®, and Microsoft Windows®. « Back to Top What is a 'zombie' computer? A 'zombie' computer is a system that has often been compromised by a virus. The virus typically installs remote access software on the compromised machine and the 'host' machine takes control of the compromised computer. Zombie computers are often used to send spam or send overwhelming amounts of traffic to a targeted server- causing it to crash. This form of attack is called a Distributed Denial of Service Attack. Resolved Question: Is It BT Yahoo or am I missing something?

IS IT BT OR HAVE I MISSED SOMETHING? My Problems I have had continuing problems with BT Yahoo’s email ever since I (now regrettably) signed up to BT Broadband some months ago on the recommendation of a friend. My Set Up My system is Windows 2000 Professional; where I am the Administrator and user of two Windows 2000 user log in accounts. My connection is via LAN/NIC router and network card and I only use email on one of two networked computers. My computer security includes AVG Pro anti virus, Zone Alarm Pro firewall and Acronis Privacy Expert Suite. I have come to these after many years of research and in my opinion are the best I have found. Email is the most important application for my work. I only need two email accounts – one for domestic and friends correspondence, and one for my work. Previous providers have given me UEMA (unlimited email addresses) or 20 – all on email servers via my email client (Outlook Express). BT only offers customers 4 – all on web servers through Yahoo. My BT primary email account is under my Windows 2000 administrator log in and my two BT email sub accounts are on two separate Windows 2000 user log ins. I do not use the main BT primary account because it’s address is my full name and therefore my identity, which I do not want for important reasons. If they have my full name, they only need to find my address – pretty easy – and I get flooded with junk mail from US investment sharks and dodgy services which I am now too old for! So why does BT not let customers choose the name part of their email address. They ask you to choose an email address when you sign up; but then they completely ignore your choice and insert theirs; with no opportunity to change it. I use Outlook Express for my emails, and have no wish to use a web based email service. This is partly because I find it too slow and limiting. But also because; and although I am fully aware that the internet is not completely secure; web based mail tends to be less secure than dedicated mail server based email using an email client such as Outlook Express, and you can make your use of it as secure as currently possible and less open to hackers. I correspond, publish and post to hundreds of journalists and correspondents all over the world. I am also a private tutor here in UK and use email for assignments to and from students. My email service must therefore be reliable and as secure as possible. The main reason for this is that I may be in contact with correspondents in countries with repressive regimes or under occupation. This is another reason why it is better that my email address does not show my name, so that there is less chance for people to be seen to be contacting me. I can get free web based email from Yahoo, Hotmail and others any time I want, without BT, and use it via Outlook Express; so BT are not giving away anything special with their “Award winning” Broadband regarding email are they? Why does BT not have mail server based email? I assumed this would be available when I signed up with BT Broadband. If I had realised BT used web based email through US owned Yahoo I would not have gone with BT. My old ISP was much better. It was on a mail server where I used Outlook Express – a perfect set up that did everything I needed the way I wanted. Now I cannot even get access to that and have lost lots of important messages and contacts who have thought I had disappeared or was not interested. Pretty Coloured Emails and Home Page. And Nothing But Months Of Problems From The Start The Yahoo web based email service attached so generously with BT Broadband has given me trouble more or less since I first signed up with it some months ago. Since then I have spent many hours and days on and off trying to sort it out – going through all the help files and forums. The first sub account I created verified right away and worked fine immediately. The second did not work. It took a long time (several days) to verify. But it still did not work. Initially this fault was corrected from BT’s technical help centre in India. A couple of weeks later, another of my two sub accounts, the most important one for most of my work, also ceased to work. I haven't used the call centre in India much because; although I find the staff to be superb; it is so long-winded and tiresome, as they have to go through BT’s set procedures every time. Which is probably the reason why it is often ultimately found to be rather useless. India is very advanced in computer technology; and the Indian staff are always thoroughly proficient, friendly, courteous and as helpful as possible. But it seems to me that the problem is with the BT infrastructure or management ineffectiveness or poor and ineffectual training or staff suffering under the constraints of BT’s poor service that is the cause of BT’s problems here. I could originally send via the second BT sub account on Yahoo itself on the web, but not via more

Voting Question: Which is the best computer for a university like high school?

I go to NCSSM and I would like to know which computer is best for it. It needs to have a 2gb+ RAM and the battery should be decent. Also, I would like it to have a web cam, but also not have to spend a lot of money. What do you recommend? Here are more specifications: # Processor: Dual Core - 2.0 GHz or higher # Memory (RAM): 2GB or greater for Vista or Windows 7. # Hard Drive: 160 GB or greater, plus an external hard drive (to store backups, music, photos, games). # Wireless Adapter: There are multiple standards for the WiFi adapter - 802.11 a/b/g/n. The NCSSM network uses 802.11 g, so your adapter must be g-compatible . Older adapters that are a/b or b only will not work on the school network, but may be used with some home or other networks. Newer n adapters will need to be g-compatible as well. # Network Card: 10/100 integrated on systems board - wired Ethernet not available in most dorms. # Video: 128 MB - usually integrated on systems board. Gamers will want more memory. # Audio: integrated on systems board. # CD/DVD Burner: 8X or greater. # Display Screen size: 14" or greater (13" for Macs), 1200 x 800 resolution. # Battery: 6 cell or greater. # Software: Operating system - Windows XP Pro, Windows Vista (Basic, Home Premium or Business), Windows 7, Mac OS X, Linux. Office suite, Anti-virus program, and classroom applications are furnished while students are enrolled at NCSSM. #Warranty: Minimum of 2 years more

Resolved Question: What is the difference between ZoneAlarm Anti Spyware and Internet Security?

Hey, What is the difference between ZoneAlarm Anti Spyware and ZoneAlarm Internet Security IN TERMS OF SPYWARE DETECTION AND DELETION? In this site, it lists and review the best software for specific genres (e.g. Anti Spyware, Anti Virus, Internet Suite) This one is the review for ZoneAlarm Spyware: http://anti-spyware-review.toptenreviews.com/zonealarm-anti-spyware-review.html And this is the review for ZoneAlarm Internet Security: http://internet-security-suite-review.toptenreviews.com/zonealarm-review.html The suite managed to be number 2 in the lists with the highest spyware detection but in the spyware standalone, it's in 6th place with pretty poor review. So what makes the suite any better from the standalone in terms of spyware detection and deletion? N.B I'm asking this because I'm planning to get a separate anit virus and a separate anti spyware. Thanks in advance... more

Resolved Question: Kaspersky problems: please help?

I recently (about 2 days ago) restored my always well working computer to free some space (I had too many things, I was lazy to delete, so burnt the important files in a DVD and restored). After restoring, I decided to install Kaspersky 2009 security suite on my computer (I bought the security suite a week ago). All worked fine, and I was really happy, since I Heard that Kaspersky was a great Anti-Virus. Now, you really shoudn't believe what you read on the Internet, since Avast!, a free Anti-Virus, is so much better. Now for my problem: I installed Kaspersky, and it asked me if I wanted to install the updates. I did. Then, all ran smoothly. However, I noticed that the Internet browser and everything else ran slower than before (when I had Norton/McAfee/Avast!), when I had so many more things taking my RAM! I used my computer correcly for about a day, and today, when I came back from school, all the Kaspersky curses began. First, all ran even slower than the day before. Then I went out for like half an hour, and when I came back, I installed an application installer (for an online game). Upon completing the game client download, I double clicked the file to install the game. And finally, Kaspersky exploded. Complete screen freeze, except for the mouse. I didn't wait, and unplugged my computer, and rebooted it. And damn, my computer got destroyed by Kaspersky, the suposed "best" Anti-Virus ever. I can't open Internet Explorer anymore (the network connection is perfecly, I have another small computer just beside my main one, so I could try). When I double click it, this sandwatch thingy appears beside my mouse, and just stays there. Forever. Or until I unplugg my computer. Then, when I started to use the Start Menu to open IE, not only IE doesn't open, but the Start Menu freezes and the taskbar as well. Even when I open My Computer, it takes 1 minute to browse the files before showing them up. I just restored my computer. It has nothing in it, except a game installer, and Kaspersky. I made 2 full system scans today. All meaningless adwares, considered as not dangerous. When I close my computer from the Starta Menu, it lags. 5 minutes later, a window appears, saying that IEXPLOERER.EXE is not responding, and that I'll have to let it save the data before turning off the CPU. I had this kind of problem before, all was ok. but this time, the same "IEXPLORER.EXE not responding" window keeps poping up, one after another. So the only way to turn off the computer now is to unplugg. This cimputer always worked damn well, so the only possibility remains Kaspersky (not the game, I've played it for years now, and it is a well-known safe game). Anyone help? Or should I delete Kaspersky?I do not use 2 Security programs at the same time. I currently only have Kaspersky. There are no virus, trojan or malwares in the computer. I did a scan wit Avast! before restoring, and two with Kaspersky after restoring. more

Resolved Question: What is Internet Security and which are best softwares available for this purpose?

I am confused about Internet Security. So please guide me with utmost honesty (Please don't fool me because I am naive about Internet Security). I am a housewife (who used to once work as a Foxpro Programmer. But later I quit the job and started taking care of my home and family). So although I am a good foxpro programmer (and not entirely naive about using a PC) I don't know much about internet. Lately, I have started using Internet. Now, I have come to know that viruses, worms, spywares, malaware, adware, etc. can attack my personal computer even if I open my emails. In order to prevent this from happening I should have anti-virus, anti-spyware, etc. installed on my personal computer. I have also been advised to install something termed as 'firewall'. Besides, there are so many products (McAfee Anti-Virus, Norton Anti-Virus, E-SET Safe, Trend Micro, Quick Heal, AVG, Kaspersky, etc.) And if I visit these companies' websites I see they have multiple products that they are manufacturing. For example, I installed AVG Free for home users. But the company also sells a paid version of that Anti-virus software and also selling something termed AVG Internet Security. Similarly, McAfee sells something termed Security Center. Now, I am all confused. I have several questions: Question #1: Which is the best Anti-Virus software currently? I am confused about which of these softwares should I buy? For example, should I buy McAfee Anti-Virus or Norton (which one is better? I don't know and so I can't make up my mind). Now, McAfee and Norton are just two examples. In reality, in the market place in anti-virus category itself there are several products. So an expert may tell me that I should neither buy McAfee or Norton; but instead choose Kaspersky because it is best anti-virus currenty around. So I feel you should guide me seriously about which is the best Anti-Virus software available as of now. Question #2: What is Internet Security? For example, several of these companies have their Internet Security Softwares. Now, does that mean that if I buy Internet Security Suite of a company it will give me full protection from Viruses, Spywares, Worms, Trojans, Malaware, Adware and what not and will this Internet Security Suite also install its firewall or whether for a firewall I will have to search for another company? Which is the best Internet Security Suite/Software currently available. Question #3: What is a firewall? What purpose does it serve? Now, my Windows Vista also has a firewall (that perhaps got installed when my PC came pre-installed with MS Vista Home Basic). Now, is this Vista firewall not enough as a protection? And which is the best firewall software currently? Thanks & Regards, Anita Mallya. more

Resolved Question: Sort of done to death security suite question, but a bit different...?

Hi, I'm an IT professional who has a strong preference for using a variety of security applications; picking the strongest for each area (anti-virus, firewall, anti-malware, etc) BUT I have a particular customer who has asked me to set up their brand new Vista Business laptop with a single, subscription security suite that they can pretty much "set and forget" (as opposed to several different programs requiring individual configuration/tweaking.) What, in your opinion, is the best "All-In-One" solution that requires the least user input (once it has been set-up) and yet doesn't sacrifice the level of security offered as a result of its simplicity? The customer's main concern, it seems, is to have a firewall that doesn't prompt for decisions too often (and I'd certainly prefer not to install a Norton or McAfee product.) Thanks in advance, AlexDIt comes with a time limited trial of "Windows Live OneCare". Is that any good? Thanks. The reviews do sound good for ESET. Muckdoomee: Could you clarify what Kaspersky users have found confusing, please? Do you mean that it detects a threat, deals with it by quarantining it, but the fact that it flags a detection has left some thinking that they still need to perform some manual action? more

Voting Question: FREE anti-virus, anti-spyware and firewall - best?

Okay. I know, that Avira's AntiVir has the BEST (better than Kaspersky's) heuristic code analyzer / proactive defence against unknown malware... so, I'll pick it as an (free) anti-virus. But what about anti-spyware? I was trying to use Spyware Terminator with Avira's AntiVir, but had a conflict. You can tell me how to avoid such conflict with these two programs. But the thing I really want to know, is that - what (free) anti-spyware (with real-time protection) is the best and will suite my Avira's AntiVir? Also, which (free) firewall you would recommend? COMODO's, or something else? It must suite my Avira's AntiVir as well. Thanks a lot! :D P.S. Also, is there something better / safer / more comprehensive/effective registry cleaner than COMODO's one? Resolved Question: I got virtumonde/vundo...question?

I got the stupid trojan virtumonde or vundo on my computer. I did all the usual stuff: ran Spybot S&D, Adaware, and Norton in Safe Mode, but it keep coming back and ads kept coming up, in the Mozilla browser of all things! I almost NEVER use Internet Explorer anymore! I had to call up tech support and after hrs of trying to get help, I had no choice but to reformat my harddrive that was running Windows on it (messed up Windows really bad). So here's two questions: 1) What antivirus/internet security suite is the best to get (one that has it all, anti-spam, anti-virus, anti-rootkit, etc.) Norton SUCKS and I'll never use it again! 2) Where the eff did I even get this trojan to begin with? Are there any particular sites or places it's downloaded from? I DON'T download stuff from P2Ps, I DON'T use bittorrents, I DON'T click on random ads that happen to popup....I dunno where I got this from....unless it was from a porn site or something. Please tell me where this trojan comes from though so I can avoid those sites/places. I DON'T want to have reformat my harddrive again!I did not download anything recently, unless you count small porn clips from a porn clips website (avis, mpegs). Otherwise, I have no idea. Again I use Internet Explorer VERY LITTLE....unless in that short amount of usage I got something from it....*shrugs*Also, I did have an old version of Norton, so that didn't help. But just in general I'm not interested in Norton again cuz it's the worst on the market for letting viruses get thru on your computer. I can update some programs but I can't afford to just go out and buy the latest versions of everything. Unless you mean general updates (downloads) for the program itself. more

Money is no object, because I can quite easily crack any of the available programs in the market so don't limit your suggestions just to the free ones! What is the best all-round Internet Security Suite: ESET Smart Security, Kaspersky Internet Security 2009, McAfee Internet Security 2009, Norton Internet Security, or PC Tools Internet Security 2009? If you recommend stand-alone programs, recommend 3 of the best of their respective kinds please!! Ta, Loz more

Voting Question: Is this a good computer?

Okay, I've posted 2 other questions about this, but this is my final one. Im looking for a laptop for myself, a 14 year old 8th grader. I will use it greatly for school projects, pictures, editing those pictures, music and a downloadable game or two. I need a computer that runs very smoothly for the game and has a lot of storage for many programs. I will be using the laptop every day for the game (Combat Arms, a war game) and for school things and music and so on. I have to have a laptop, and the computer I'm looking at right now is called a Studio 15 by Dell. I've loaded it with some good things, and I'll post those in a moment. The price is very pricey, $2,194 because I've put on some of the best things into the laptop. I will be doing a plan though where I pay $66 a month. Plus, its no interest until October, 2009 and im hoping I can pay off the whole thing by then, and I think I can. So the question is, when you look at the information about the laptop that I've posted below, and you know the requirements I need, is this a good computer? Any comments or suggestions? Changes I should make? Thanks in advance! ;D This is all the information on the page. I hope it helps! Sorry if it looks confusing... Resolved Question: Best freeware for a DIY / roll your own Security Suite?

Hello- I'm looking to build my own freeware security suite which consists of the following programs: - Anti-virus (including email scanning) - Anti-spyware - Firewall (two-way) Looking for the best-of-breed freeware programs for each. Specifically I'd like to know which 3 work well together & consume little system resources. If you have any other recommendations (miscellaneous security tools, FireFox plug-ins, etc), please share those as well. Thanks in advance! FYI: My current setup is: McAfee VirusScan Enterprise 8 (free from employer), Sygate Firewall (now defunct, but still works) and Ad-Aware.No offense on the McAfee slam.
