Resolved Question: Security Suite Virus! Please help me get rid of this thing!?

Okay, so I have the Security Suite Virus. The Virus which disguises itself as an Antivirus/Antimalware software alert system and attempts to have you purchase the "full version" of this pretend software. I found an answer on Yahoo! Answers which led me to bleepingcomputer.com/virus-removal/remove-security-suite. It has great input on how to rid my computer of the virus...however I am running into larger problems. In the instructions on how to get rid of the virus, it has me launch windows in Safe Mode with Networking. It then has me go into Internet Explorer and Tools and Internet Options and Connections and LAN Settings and uncheck the box under the Proxy Server section labeled Use a proxy sever for your LAN. It then has me download rkill.com and run the program. This is all with the intention of downloading Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware. However, the computer randomly shutdown on me after I ran rkill. And i mean just completely died (did not go through a shutdown process) it just BOOM...black screen, everything is dead, etc. I have to unplug the power cord from the back of my laptop and plug it back in again before the computer allows me to power it back up. Once powered back up, I start it in safe mode again, and before I can do anything further, it shuts down on me again. Same exact way. This has happened to me 4 or 5 times in a row. I've now started the computer normally...and I'm here writing this question. So, if someone has advice, moral support, or anything that could be of assistance...I'd love to continue in my attempt to get this virus off the computer. Everything else seems logical. Anyways...if anyone reads the insructions from Bleeping Computer, can you also let me know if I even need to run Malwarebytes??? I already have Avast and Superantispyware downloaded and installed...will they perform the same function. I'm just wondering if perhaps Bleeping Computer and Malwarebytes has a partnership, etc. Thanks again!!!!!!!Many of your pieces of advice I have tried. However, when I am in Safe Mode with Networking...the computer keeps randomly shutting down before I can go on with any of the other steps!!! How do I keep the computer from shutting down long enough to run Malwarebytes??? more

Resolved Question: Does anybody really know what the best free anti-virus software is?

I recently had a virus in my computer. I brought it to PC World to get my computer fixed. I asked the technician in PC World what was the best anti-virus software to download as I was thinking of using Microsoft Essentials. He told me not to use that but to use AVG instead. Then I came on here last week to ask a question and most people on Yahoo Answers were telling me to use Avast! Why are there so many conflicting views?? more

Voting Question: Computer Won't Turn on, Possible Virus?

I posted a question yesterday about having a possible virus on my computer, but now it won't turn on. It comes to the main page then stops and takes me to a testing page. It runs tests to see whats wrong then it say the problem can't be fixed automatically. The messages that popped up a day before this happened said something like "An unauthorized person is stealing information and passwords from your computer." and esentutl.exe has stopped working. A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available." I have no clue what this esentutl.exe thing is, but it keeps popping up in a message when I try to open certain things. It keeps me from using Yahoo Messenger, pops up during using the internet, and stops me from changing the display preferences. (Screen savers, backgrounds, etc.) I have an anti-maleware and virus software. (1 of each, free downloaded ones) Yesterday it wasn't even close no not turning on, but now it isn't doing anything but running tests to find the "problem". Any clue what happened? When the first message showed up when my computer froze, I was on Yahoo.com, Facebook, Yahoo Messenger, and a CD Game. Resolved Question: Fixing a massive memory leak?

A rouge anti-virus made its way on my PC a few days ago and has wreaked havoc. McAfee, doing what it does best, let this "program" through. I did my best to figure out what was going on, and within a couple minutes I installed Vipre and scanned my PC. Apparently the rouge AV called "Security Master AV," let some of its friends in as well, and I was dealing with several trojans and malicious programs. Vipre picked up on most of these as well, and I thought it quarantined everything... it didn't. However, that marked the end of Security Master AV. After the quick and deep scan using Vipre, I assumed the registry was still damaged, as various things didn't work as they should (ex. minimizing windows). I then decided to restore my PC to an earlier date before the infection. That seemed to work for a few hours. Then they spontaneously returned on one occasion of me opening IE8. I learned that the trojans/viruses may have had their links to the system broken and they were most likely lurking. This time I downloaded Malwarebytes and scanned my PC. It pulled up a huge laundry list and quarantined the malware. Thinking there was more, I turned off restore points (the trojans deleted them the 2nd time around anyways), put my PC in safe mode, and deep scanned with Malwarebytes. I'll post my logs from these scans below. Stuff from Vipre... - Explorer.32.Hijacker - HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21-343818398-1532298954-725345543-1004\Software\XML -1 - Packed.Win32.Tdss.s(v) - C:\DOCUMENTS AND SETTINGS\SHANE\APPLICATION DATA\7112cc4b.exe - C:\DOCUMENTS AND SETTINGS\SHANE\LOCAL SETTINGS\TEMP\Vwj.exe - C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\ernel32.dll (clean failed) - VirTool.Win32.Obfuscator.hg!b(v) - C:\DOCUMENTS AND SETTINGS\SHANE\LOCAL SETTINGS\TEMP\Ucfo.exe I did a scan today with Vipre and it found... "Trojan.Win32.Generic.pak!cobra" - C:\DOCUMENTS AND SETTINGS\Shane\LOCAL SETTINGS\Temp\gkxk.exe Many of the trojans that I've gotten since my first scan are repeat offenders, especially the Explorer32.Hijacker. What follows is one that I've seen many times... "Trojan.Win32.Generic!BT" - C:\DOCUMENTS AND SETTINGS\Shane\LOCAL SETTINGS\Temp\sucvdadx.exe The only symptom I'm seeing now is memory leaking. I'm very sure there is malware still on my PC that niether McAfee, Vipre, or Malwarebytes is picking up. Nearly every process steadily gains memory usage over time, whether its all of the svchost.exe's running, Yahoo Messenger, iTunesHelper, it doesn't matter. If any more details are needed, let me know please! I know I made a bunch of mistakes on the way, but this is the first time I've had to deal with this. I'm pretty careful with my PC, as I built it myself back in 08', yet I'm learning as go along with this. Any help is most appreciated. Logs from Malwarebytes... Resolved Question: AVG Free anti-virus: Toolbar item "Page Status" is not functioning properly?

I recently downloaded AVG Free anti-virus software for my computer. I like it for the most part except that the Page Status feature on the AVG toolbar (used in Internet Explorer 8) is not functioning property. For every site that I visit, the Page Status feature is always gray with a question mark. When I click on it, it says: "Unknown - AVG Search-Shield was unable to scan this page. AVG Search-Shield was unable to read this page. It may no longer exist or there may have been an error. Ratings are provided by AVG. Site owners please contact AVG for questions." All sites are displayed as unknown. Even familiar and safe sites like Yahoo and Wikipedia are classified as unknown sites on the Page Status feature. I know this is not how the Page Status feature is supposed to function because I have seen it on my friend's computer before and it is able to rate almost all of the websites that he visits. Why doesn't the AVG Page Status feature work on my computer and how can I fix it?The free version of AVG does have the Page Status feature. My friend has the same free version of AVG that I have and his works just fine. more

Resolved Question: How do I get rid of this Virus on my computer (Part 2)?

Ok, here is my first question with the information- http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=Al.hyZsYX22AGfkI6thYKNXty6IX;_ylv=3?qid=20100531052545AAMLdrL Everyone told me to simply go to http://www.malwarebytes.org and download the free trial, I did, but when I tried to run it, the same pop-up came up, and said it was infected so it wouldn't let me actually download it/run it. Also, the same of the other anti-virus site the pop-ups are trying to lead me to is called www.antispy-guide.net Almost every program I try to click on is infected, it seems only fire fox 3 and my original anti-virus programs are the things I can actually open. My anti-viris software has so far detected 2 things, "malwarebot" count 14 which is quarantined and a Adware.Lop count 19 which is says I need a partial reboot ti remove. Any other suggestions for me here? xD more

Resolved Question: Google redirect virus?

Hey all, so a few days ago I picked up a virus that, after a little bit of research, I believe is a google redirect virus. Basically what happens is every time I click on the hits that yahoo or google comes up with, I get redirected to random sites. I've run AVG 9.0, Hitman Pro 3.5, and Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware all to no success. I noticed that in my "host" file I had 2 IP addresses; one is 127.0.0.1 localhost, and the other one was something along the lines of :: :1 localhost. I deleted the second one expecting everything to be fine afterwards, but I'm still having problems with my computer. Is there anything I can do to take care of this? Thanks!! Resolved Question: Spyware Problem HELP?!?

I recently began getting a message from my computer when I search the internet. It says something like your computer is infected. Sometimes when im surfing the net it will close me out of internet explorer and this messagae will pop up. If I click on the red X in the corner of the box it will automatically start downloading the anti virus program. Also when surfing the net using yahoo, I would search for something and get the results then when I click on the link it would be completely unrelated to what I searched for, Like i was looking for handbags online and it took me to a site for healthcare?! What could I do outside of a system recovery. I've tried a system restore and ran my Malewarebytes software. Nothing seems to be helping. Malewarebytes returns no spyware results. Thanks in advance! more

Resolved Question: I've gotten answers to my Yahoo email worm but not helping?

I have great anti-virus and malware installed on my quad core HP pc, running Vista 64 OS. I get emails from an address that ends in ".ru" which I know is a server in Russia I'm guessing. The emails have a link to viagra, etc. I've never opened the link. Friends in my address book are reporting that they're getting these ghost emails from me, but I'm not sending them. I've run 2 system scans with my AV software, and nothing shows infected. Nothing came up on my malware scan as well. I can reboot my system in less than 60 seconds, and my download speeds are lightening fast. Nothing else on my PC is having any problem. It's just this worm that's in Yahoo mail. In fact, I've gotten the same thing from another legitimate yahoo email address, something like svenska7@ yahoo.com. It had the same web link in it, too. I'm guessing it's some sort of Yahoo mail or server worm. more

Resolved Question: How can I fix my computer? Can you take a look at these problems? Can I fix this myself?

I started getting these annoying adware messages. You need to sign for some anti-virus software. It appeared very time I logged on to the Internet. It was so annoying. I got desperate. I opened my Task Manager, went to Processes and began to End Process anything that looked unusual or weird. The adware went away but so too went several of my short cuts to programs. Now I cannot access the internet through Internet Explorer. I have to use a a window called watch.wtc to get into the Internet. My webcam not longer works on Yahoo Instant Messenger and MSN Hotmail. I used to be able to use Instant Messenger on its own. Now it only works on my Yahoo and Hotmail emails and I no longer have webcam option which really sucks. Several of my free music software programs I downloaded are no longer working. I have thought of taking my PC to Best Buy and have the Geek Squad work on it. I will get an estimate from them of how much the repairs will cost. If that is too much, I will see what it will cost to wipe the hard disk clean and then just put the entire PC in the dump and get a new PC. I could also just leave the PC as is and get a laptop and a wireless router. The stupid thing still works its just that my webcam is gone and the music software is gone Now I can't convert my cassette demos on to MP3. I was also chatting on line with some women in Canada and elsewhere that would cost me a fortune to talk on my cell phone. Those girls were really cute and now my webcam doesn't work and this really sucks! What should I do? I have tried to load the recovery disk that came with my Gateway computer and the PC will not load the Windows XP disc that came with the PC. I never made a recovery disc myself for the PC. I have a Gateway from 2003 Windows XP. It is too old to upgrade to Windows Vista which is what I need if I were to purchase any descent music recording software like Cakewalk. I have Audacity. Should I say I "had" free Audacity software but now it's no longer working. What can I do? Help! more

Resolved Question: my laptop wont let me access the internet or anything! pelase help. 10 points for best answer!?

My Dell vostro laptop was working perfectly about 2 hours ago. Until I tried to use it a few minutes ago. HELP!!!!!!!!!!! When I clicked to turn it on, it lead me to my desktop and loaded everything as usual (programs and whatnot) However, as I put my cursor on my toolbar/taskbar (the one on the bottom) it wouldnt let me click on the "start" button. It just gave me my cursor "loading.." symbol. It gave me that symbol when I clicked to acess internet explorer. I restarted my computer about 4x and it led to me to the same thing. This. Now, for the (guessing) 7th time restarting my computer, i have less accessible things. If i click on my anti virus software it says (windows has stopped working - a problem cause the program to stop working correctly. windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available.) then it restarts it, itself. I ran my microsoft security essentails and malwayrebytes anit-malware this morning, and it said nothing was infected. More info ~ The little wifi sign is still there on my taskbar, so I DO have internet. The last program i downloaded is ManyCam 2.4 which i dont think has any viruses, cos it scanned it before downloading. I honestly dont go on that many websites. The main things are: yahoo.com | twitter.com | dailybooth.com | facebook.com | myspace.com | formspring.me | stickam.com | google.com | youtube.com | aim.com | thats basically it... and on those listed websites, i dont click on any links that im not aware of. why all of the sudden is my computer crashing? do i reboot to safe mode? ugh please help. thanks in advance more

Resolved Question: Please help; Yahoo Messenger virus?

My friend borrowed my thumbdrive and when I got it back there's this folder named 'New Folder' marked as Application. I clicked on it to see what it contained and after a few seconds I saw 2 windows open (looked like YM windows, they've got name list, or whatever) but they quickly disappears. I clicked on the folder a few times because I wanted to see what the windows were (not smart). My YM was on at that time. After a few minutes a friend PM'd me saying I've got a virus. I think whatever it was sent messages of some sort to people on my list. I've had a friend sent me links before but I never opened them because I knew it had to virus of some sort. So I figured out I must have leashed something out of the folder and now I'm infected too. So what do I do? I tried scanning the system with anti-virus. I thought it worked but after a few minutes I saw the windows flashes again. It was sending msgs to my friends again. I'm thinking of reinstalling my YM but I might lose my chat archive. Will I be able to view them again if I copied them somewhere else, reinstall the same version of YM, and place the files back into the folder? Will that work? Or is there any other thing I can do, like downloading a removal software? I already downloaded a software from MajorGeeks, but since my laptop is already messed up (an error msg pops up after a few hours of using the laptop, and it either freezes my laptop or slows it down. Either way I have to reboot everytime) What do I do? Please help :< more

Resolved Question: good non-intrusive yet free antivirus program.?

Ok, so I had AVG Free for awhile, but got really pissed when i relised that i really had no control over it. Meaning that when it found something it thought was a virues(Like a keygen), it would do its thing and not let be involved in the removal process. I had no control over what files it was removing and what files it wans't. I downloaded malware bytes free version and that has been doing me well. though lately, for some reason, it has not been working. So my question to you is, Do you know of any good anti-virus software that will let me do what i want to do, and yet is still good at detecting the virues. thanks. Also, how are you guys liking the new Yahoo answers? more

Resolved Question: Internet Security 2010, Help?

Okay, So I know there have been threads about this problem before, but none of them seem to exactly fit my issues with it so I decided to start a different one. I had Anti Virus 2009 before this one, and I had serious problems of the similar kind with it. I suppressed it, rather than removing it, and I suppose it has come back to bite me. Suddenly, I began getting pop ups of advertisements. Then the next thing i know I had pop ups saying my system is "infected" with tons of things, courtesy of Internet Security 2010. Obviously, they believe someone is really dumb enough to believe they have all these things and are being warned by a program they never even downloaded. It is being very annoying. I cannot connect to Yahoo, I cannot get to the Internet.. The pop up warnings are constant and it changed the background on my desktop. I had found a solution but I cannot access the internet to even download such a thing. So, I figured I'd wipe out my computer and start over fresh. But, the only way I know how to do that is to begin in the Command Prompt [Start > Accessories > command prompt] and I cannot open it to even do anything without it telling me that the "anti virus software" isn't allowing me to do so. I am not sure what to do, so do you think anyone can give me a hand?I cannot do a system restore. Everytime I try to, even in safe mode, the virus tells me that "Application cannot be executed. The tile is infected. Please activate your antivirus software." more

Voting Question: How do I get "Control-Center" off my computer?

I don't know what it is, but it downloaded itself onto my computer (I was on Yahoo! Answers when it happened). I searched for all files under that name and got the file's shortcut, I removed it from my computer but I still have to find the program itself. It is not in the "All Programs" section of the start menu, and I only found the shortcut when I searched. My Anti-virus/Spyware programs don't detect anything out of the ordinary, but I still want this program off my computer. I know it isn't valid because the moron who created the program misspelled a lot of words (LOL). What it says: Security: Virus Protection (Importat) Control-Center did not find anti-virus software of this computer. Traffic filtering: Network Firewall (Iportant) Control-Center found undesireable network activity. Network Firewall is not installed. It then asks me to register and input my personal information, so that further proves that it isn't a genuine antiviral software site. more

When i try to open my antivirus programs all three say 'Application cannot be executed. the file wscntfy.exe is infected' & when i click begin protection after that error message another pop up says 'powerful pc protection' & it wants me to buy a program. Resolved Question: Infected files/virus popup - anyone know what this is?

This keeps popping up on my friend's computer every few seconds. - http://f531.mail.yahoo.com/ya/download?mid=1%5f15255%5fADcxvs4AAMwMSzO7ogJFrQK956k&pid=2&fid=Inbox&inline=1 It started by McAfee popping up and running a scan. And it said like 30 things were infected but she only has the free trial, and she knew it just wanted her to buy the software, so she just closed it. And then after that that box started popping up. When she presses yes, it just brings her to an anti virus thing, not McAfee. And if she says no it just keeps popping up. She can't open her control panel through ctrl+alt+delete to end it, and she can't open some other things such as her pictures and Paint, it says they're infected. It's an HP laptop, and it has Windows Vista. Is there anything she can do for it? Does anyone know what it is?Sorry, here's the link to the picture of it. I put the wrong link originally. - http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v343/kippergirl/download.jpgAnd it's Norton antivirus 360, not McAfee, sorry. McAfee was her old software. more

Resolved Question: Why can I not install IE7 or 8 and why does my firefox crash when I sign out of my yahoo mail?

I have a problem i don't understand. I have both Firefox and IE6 on my pc. In order to have a better browsing experience in IE, I decided to run upgrade my IE to 7 or 8 but keep the Firefox as well. Anytime I try to upgrade the IE, and restart the PC, Windows Explorer simply shuts down and I have to use CCleaner (by way of Windows Task Manager, because my desktop icons as well as my Start Menu don't appear) to reverse the installation. I have checked the system requirements for IE7 or 8, and I don't have any problem with them. My PC runs XP SP2, has a PIII 1GHz processor, 512MB of memory and plenty of HDD space (25 GB of 80 free). Also, my monitor has 800 x 600 display with 32 bit colours (if I read correctly from the FAQs, there should be no problem here either). I have also followed the instruction to switch off Anti-virus/Antispyware software temporarily (I am using AVG Free 8.5, which i update almost every day). I am not particularly diligent in downloading updates, but I have (primarily because of this problem) downloaded the IE updates from the Microsoft site. The second issue concerns Firefox. I am only facing one problem with it which is that when I sign out of my Yahoo mail it crashes and closes down as soon as the Yahoo main page tries to load. Now I checked the add-ons, and saw the latest called "Yahoo Application State Plugin". It also says that it has been disabled for my protection. I followed the link to the Mozilla site, and it told me it had been disabled because of frequent crashes. Now, the browser claims it is already disabled (the "enable" button is inactive), so why does the browser continue to crash? Hope help is out there, thanks! more

Resolved Question: HTTP Error 404 - all sites, every time .....?

Posted this originally on the US Yahoo Answers site, 1 good response but issue still unresolved. "Arrived home to the g/f saying that she had "broken the internet" .... "sh1t" I thought, if she has managed to do that (did not put it past her), there is going to be a lot of angry people out there .... !!! Unbeknown to me, my anti-virus software (ES ET Smart Security) was 19 days out of date ..... no reminders, nice. Anyway, downloaded on my PC, transferred via usb pen drive and installed various new anti-virus & spyware softwares (AVG Free 8.5, Malwarebytes, SuperAntiSpyware) some which found nothing (?!) some which cleaned out / quarantined 'a lot' (unsure if I still have the logs). Problem before was that couldn't do anything without warnings (from ES ET Smart Security) popping up about the viruses and IE opening and trying to go to p0rn.com & vi@gra.org. Seems like I have cleaned up the laptop now but cannot connect to any site (yahoo, facebook) without the HTTP Error 404. 'Interestingly' the auto navigate attempts to p0rn.com & vi@gra.org didn't bring back any content either. Emptied the browsing history & temp internet files, tried installing Firefox, have checked for updates to the A-V / Spy S/W and re-run scans ..... in desperation, tried 'netsh Winsock reset' in a CMD from advice here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/892350/en-us ..... ooops, I now see I am actually on Win XP 2009 SP3 ..... Any suggestions (apart from staying off p0rn sites (I have not visited any p0rn sites (on that computer!)!)!) before I start taking random, drastic actions trying to guess my way through it? Cheers." by Callum Member since June 19, 2009: "Quick one check your Security levels in internet explorer (Tools >> Internet Options) it could be set to High and it wont let you access and also the content adviser ! (use custom settings to about mid settings) That's one of the main bug bearers for getting a 404 Oh run spybot if u can get a copy on it then run AVG again afterwards Try a restore to a point before G/F "broke" your box of tricks if all else fails your gonna have to do a reinstall of the OS or maybe a worse case scenario............... re-format Sorry got to go so no time to add more options for you Best of luck PS>> vi@gra.org..... is normally spread via e-mail do a scan of you messages including deleted and spam folders ..........p0rn.com ... not sure of this one but i guess has many guises" My latest comment: Ta for the above Callum, unfortunately still unresolved! Been using another PC, suppose I should give fixing it another try. Tried Internet Options / spybot / AVG +++ route, no avail. Not restored / reformatted -YET - I'm sure it is something simple. Interesting tho, Skype and file sharing still work??? more

Resolved Question: Is this my computer virus?

I have some virus in my computer that kept on popping up anti-virus windows. The effects of that have gone after of ran a scan in safe mode and my computer ran out of battery. When I started it back up there were no more pop ups but now I cant open any .exe files and it seems my rundll32 file is corrupted (i know this because when i right click on the desktop and click on properties it says C:\WINDOWS\system32\rundll32.exe Application not found). I dont know why it says application not found as the file is in that folder. Whenever i start any .exe file the 'open with' box pops up. I cannot access command prompt by typing cmd, but i can by typing command. From there I type regedit and it pops up. From there I click on HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE, then software, then Microsoft, then WIndows, then Current Version and then click on run. Everything in there looks normal apart from two things. It is the first one I am more suspicious anout though. Under the 'Name' it says B40750EF1C79949C and under 'Data' it says \\?\globalroot\systemroot\system32\B40750EF1C79949C.exe which really looks wierd. The second thing is named 19460464 and the data is C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\19460464\19460464.exe which I dont think is the virus. Another thing is that I cant open any microsoft office programs from there icons because it says "Application not found", but i can open them from a file such as a word document od excel speadsheet in there respective programs. I can use the internet and it works perfectly normal except for when I type a search itno a search engine such as yahoo and google, when i click on a link it redirects me to random scam pages. This happens most times but I just copy the link underneath to resolve it but it still is annoying. Another thing is the when I click on a link in a search, no matter what page random page it loads up, there is always a fancy, curvey, blue 'a' type letter where the icons go which is in the address bar at the left. I am running Microsoft XP Home Edition with SP3 installed (I think, could be SP2 I dont know). Lastly, another thing is that when I try to download something from the internet, it puts the file on my computer, but when it trys to install it, the 'open with' window opens and the file name is at the top (such as - Google Updater[1].exe) and doesnt know what to open with. Is it because it doesnt know to open it with windows installer or something??? Any help is greatly appreciated.sorry it cut out the data for my first suspision. Here it is again: \\?\globalroot\systemroot\system32\B40750EF1C79949C.exestill cutting off data. its in 2 parts and refer to the other edit. Second part: 0EF1C79949C.exe more

Resolved Question: What should I do about this computer virus?

I think I have contracted a virus. I am having browser issues. When I try to click on a link from Gmail, Google Reader, Google search, Yahoo search, or a variety of other websites, the browser opens a different, spammy-looking shopping website. It won't open the right link. I have to copy and paste the address into the address bar to get the page to open. And sometimes that doesn't work. I suspected that I got a virus, so I Googled "virus removal software." Not a single website that contains virus removal software will open. I get the same error message "Page cannot be displayed" for every anti-virus site I try to visit. This makes me think it is a virus. Here is something that further complicates the issue. I was thinking that if I can't download virus removal software, I could purchase some and install it on the computer. But then I remembered that our CD drive isn't working for some reason. Aaargh! What should I do? I called the Geek Squad and was told that they recommend an agent come to my house and run a diagnostic on the computer to target the problem. I don't really want to spend $130 for a guy to come out and tell me I have a virus. I am pretty sure that's the problem. I don't have a problem paying to have the virus removed, but how can I do that without paying someone to diagnose it? Any suggestions? Details: It's an HP Pavilion laptop that uses Vista. more

Resolved Question: can't get rid of a Virus?

I got some sort of virus that won't allow me to do searches on the web, like yahoo/google etc. I can only type in direct site links. I can download antivirus software but I can't get it to run. I need to rename them as I download them to even get them to install. It keeps opening up an IE tht will run in the background and play ads. Its on a laptop with vista on it. The laptop did not come with a reinstall vista disk instead you need to burn one. and it only lets you burn one. problem is I never burned one. and now when I try to it says cannot find recovery partition. I looked on the web a litte and it might be like uacd.sys or something like that. but they said I could go to device manager turn on show hidden, go to non plug and play and I should see its driver in the list, and I do not see it there. so far I have managed to find 2 antivirus programs taht will run, the virus keeps infecting .exe files. and it will catch these, but it never seems to catch the root file causing all of it. So to recap. I have had the laptop 2 years, got it from bestbuy. they have horrible service and wouldn't help when the batt died after having the laptop for just over 4 weeks. So I know they would not help here. I do not have a copy of vista as I never burned one, and now it won't let me, not sure if thats the virus or what... I tried to use ubcd4win. thinking. but I can't seem to compile an image. its asking for core window files and it can't seem to get them off the laptop. but again I have no clue what I am doing with that. ONTOP all that. I thought maybe if I updated vista it would remove whatever vunerability let it get the virus and make it so anti virus that I could get to run woudl catch it. and after downloading all of that stuff. now windows says I might be the victim of fake software. I tried to confirm my windows vista and it said it could not be confirmed. I 1000% percent sure I got the laptop brand new. Its a valid vista on there. I have no idea if its the virus causing the error or what. I am not sure where to go from here. Bestbuy = worst place to stop ever. I do still have my receipt tho not sure if I could contact microsoft directly and prove taht I paided for the laptop new if they woudl help at all. more
