Open Question: McAfee Internet Security Suite vs. Microsoft Security Essentials - which one is best for a new laptop?
I recently just got an Acer Aspire laptop as a gift with Windows 7 on it, and I want the best protection on it. I don't have the funds yet to pay for an anti-virus protection program, so McAfee came pre-installed on it for a 60 day trial period. I have read McAfee is not the best now, and was wondering if MSSE was pretty good to go ahead and install on it? If so, I will uninstall the McAfee and get this. I've also heard Avast and AVG, etc are other good free ones but i'm VERY cautious when it comes to putting stuff on my computers. 10 best for the best thorough answer! THANKS IN ADVANCE.also, will Security Essentials always be free? just incase i wait to let McAfee run it's trial period.. moreResolved Question: Help! My PC Got A Virus. What Should I Do?
Now 3 days ago I downloaded some game. and got some "security tool" virus and I think others. So after a couple hours I do a system restore. Now, no sign of that security tool, but now Im getting kicked off the internet and my computer is running slower. So then I take it to bestbuy/ geek squad where I bought it over a year and a half ago. They run a diagnostics check, and say yes, that there are viruses. And want me to buy ativirus for 200 bucks. I say no, get home, try another system restore, then download free anti-spyware avast, run it let it do its thing, then delete it (cause I heard it mite slow down my computer). Then I bring it to my brothers house and see if it works, everythings fine. Now, I want to bring her home, but before I do, I want to be "ABSOLUTELY SURE" It is just as I bought her (or maybe even better/fatser). These are some things I heard will do just that: First some one said my system restore should have done the trick( I want to be more sure, cause I heard these viruses can disguise themselves and come back later) . Someone said re-install windows 7 OS, the only problem with that is my computer did'nt come with the windows 7 disk, Now the geek sqaud said I need to buy the disk from microsoft for $300 or try and see if making recovery disks and rebooting it will work. (Don't have blank disks at the moment, maybe buy some later.) I' ve also heard of manually removing them, just don't know what to look for or how or where to begint(if u know how.I would like to try, just need easy to follow directions please tell me) Geek squad also said i must have anti virus and spyware(any suggestions on the best, cheapest, and less performance swallowing.) Thank You For All your answers, God Bless YOU moreOpen Question: McAfee Virus Scan Plus Scanning Issue?
PLEASE IGNORE OF HOW BIG THIS BLOCK OF TEXT IS! I REALLY NEED HELP! I have McAfee Virus Scan Plus. (2010 Edition) Every time I run a full scan, it scans around 800 files only on 1% and then it freezes on a file named: $RR71R11.avi. It NEVER gets past this file. And when it does get to this file, McAfee crashes. I am very angry because I've been having this problem for a while and I cannot do scans. I can do a quick scan, but I want to do a full scan. And when it gets to this file, McAfee does not say the location. It just says it's on my C Drive, but it does not say the specific location. It kinda looks like this: C:/../../$RR71R11.avi. And i've tried searching for this file on my computer and windows cannot find it. And I chatted with a McAfee representative and she did not help much but she said the file is corrupted and it needs to be replaced or deleted. She told me to call Microsoft but, I am trying yahoo answers for now. Please, anyone help me! And do not tell me to switch to a free anti-virus because there is absolutely no way I will do that. I payed money for this and it was worth it. moreOpen Question: Virus Scan Help!! Easy!!?
So, it is not really a virus problem. It a problem with running two anti- virus systems at once. So, I have McAfee, which I got for free because my dad's work gives it for free to employee's, but I just also downloaded Microsoft essentials anti-virus, which I hear is pretty good, and it is free. So my question is, would it reduce my computers performance if I ran both at the same time, i don't mean running their virus scans at the same time, i am just keep them running, they will have scheduled scans, but on different days, but will it still degrade performance if I just run the programs at "idle basically"? Oh yes: here is my computer specs. Windows 7 x64 bit 3.33 ghz core 2 duo e6600 4 gb ddr2 1066 mhz 32 mb cache 750 gb Seagate caviar green HDD nvidia gts 250 gpu Thanks! moreVoting Question: I'm having some serious issues with my system lately please help =(?
First off what are these .dll files for? *lobvaz.dll and twain_32.dll* I've been having an insane increase in virus attempts lately. Microsoft Security Essentials and Avast literally block up to 30 or more a day for the past maybe 3 or 4 days. and in the past 2 days I've been noticing a lot of them are circulating around the lobvaz.dll file. I checked it's properties and it says it was created in 07 but I reformatted my computer about a year ago so that can't be right. So is it just a virus and safe to remove or will I end up damaging my system if I remove it? As for the Twain_32.dll file that one just sounds kinda suspicious to me lol. I've also been having a few issues lately like my start bar and title bars turning back to the old classic 98 style then back to xp, My windows audio service being disabled, my security center service being disabled, Random tabs opening up in firefox to weird sites like www.google.com/webhp. No clue what the webhp is for that's why I find it odd. Whenever I click on any links I get redirected to weird sites like shopping or advertising. My cousin who is an IT specialist couldn't even fully figure out wtf is going on. He thought it may b conficker but we couldn't find any trace of it. I've run several Avast boot time scans, Full system scans with Avast, Microsoft Security Essentials, and Malewarebits Anti Maleware without finding anything. It all started with the Antivir Virus Protection bug. If that helps at all. Reformatting isn't an option atm, and I'd really rather avoid having to do that if at all possible. And almost forgot. A lot of it has also been circulating around my svchost files. Here is a list of viruses that have made it through but I've been able to remove rather easily. TrojanDownloader:Win32/Harnig.gen!P Trojan:Win32/Dursg.C *several times* Trojan:Win32/Malagant Trojan:Win32/Hiloti.gen!D *several times* Trojan:Win32/FakeSpypro *several times* Trojan:Win32/Meredrop *several times* Virus:Win32/Alureon.H *several times* Virtool:Win32/Obfuscator.HG Trojan:JS/Tracur.C All of those were either removed or disinfected. Thankyou for anyone who read all that and will be able to help me. Sorry for the huge wall of textAlready tried it Ghoet lol thanks though. I've literally tried everything short of reformatting BUT on the bright side but looking at other peoples questions I found someone with the exact same issue and someone who answered him may have also helped meSorry can't really choose a best answer I found the solution from someone who left an answer on someone elses question moreVoting Question: installing a antivirus software?

My computer has a virus on it and no anti virus software has been able to eradicate it. I need to reinstall windows on my machine. The copy of XP that I had the key no longer seems to work on it (both the one it came with and the one I got from the DOS). I've called Microsoft and they told me that I'd have to purchase Vista as they no longer administer keys for XP. I have been looking around and cannot find a copy of Vista for less then 75 and I currently do not have that much money to pay for it. Does anyone have a solution to my dillema? I am starting school in a week and I could really use my computer back. Thanks in advance.I know what the key is like I said it's not working. This has been going on for a long time, nobody seems to have an answer. Here's what's going on, Upon boot up, my speakers work fine most of the time, then ocassionally all sounds quit, system sounds, music won't play. And maybe, I notice a delay in playback, what I mean by that is video's it's more noticeable, they will play for approx 3-5 seconds, then pause for a sec as if i'm streaming them & running out of buffer. The only solution I have to this problem, restart computer and just as soon as the windows xp shut-down screen comes up, it begins with audio again & plays the system sound of the shut-down process. Once rebooted it works fine again, sometimes for days at a time. I've tried disabling the Realtek AC'97 Audio sound controller with no luck. My system is as follows Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition Service Pack 3 Emachines W3410 AMD Athlon 64 Processor 3200+ 2.19Ghz, 1.37MB RAM Physical Address Extension The only upgrade work i've done to this model pc was added 1gb RAM and I changed out my DVD/RW drive after the factory one quit working, also have a 30Gb slave drive that I store all mymusic videos etc on. I run Microsoft Security Essentials anti-virus, windows firewall, I am setup to receive automatic updates. In device manager i've tried disabeling/re-enabling with no luck, also the hardware profile shows that it is functioning correctly, windows troubleshoot is of no use. moreVoting Question: How is my used space 27.3 GB & the free space is 519 MB left?
On my local disk 'c' it seems to barely have any space left Practically the whole pie is blue, when about a month ago it was about half blue and half pink. I don't download games or anything like that. I have been downloading different anti virus' but when they seem to not work, i would try & uninstall them, plus, i tried to uninstall things that i dont seem to think are important. Any suggestions. Bcuz i dont know what will happen, if anything, if all of the free space is used up. Every day i always empty the internet shortcuts, use the disk cleanup and windows registry along with the latest anti virus that i installed, which is microsoft securities essentials. I have a dell, inspiron 1100, running windows xp, sp2 Any help would be greatly appreciatedSmooth, i don't know how to do that. moreVoting Question: I got a message saying there may be a virus attacking my computer, what should I do?

I had downloaded an anti virus from China to deal with a virus that infected my Internet Explorer. This is not the first time I use this free anti virus from China, I used it for 3 to 4 times because of its good reputation in its country for fixing the virus I was infected. As usual, the anti virus removed the infected registry away, yet I noticed there is something different with my computer. Most of the commands in my computer, such as when I right click at the desktop toolbar to close/maximize/minimize, it show me Chinese commands . I realized the same thing happened to me during the usage of Internet Explorer, where after I right click-> Save background as/ image as/target as, the pop out window asking the location on "where do you want to save your file" also in Chinese. Not longer afterward, I found out my task manager also change its appearance, looking like Window 98's version with Chinese written all over it. I tried various approaches, including changing the regional option in my control panel. Apparently my language option still remain as English (United State) and not other part of my computer's system had this problem, only occurring at some specific commands, like when I right click at my desktop toolbar's items, or right click to save something from Internet Explorer, or in my task manager. I am eager to know how to fix the problem. Although I had no problem in reading Chinese, I found this is irritating and very unpleasant, especially I am upset with the ugly look of the task manager. Please help me, I am using Window XP with Vista theme. Thank you very much. PS: I know this problem is caused by the anti virus program, I had always be very careful in using the foreign anti virus due to sometime its system not compatibility with Microsoft Windows. The problem occured right after I cured the virus and could not even be fixed by rollback or system restore. moreVoting Question: updpxe32.exe virus problem...?

For the last one month I have been living, sic, in hell and forced to swim in oiled?
waters of the Gulf of Mexico.I am afraid I have been chosen as an unlucky, if not one of the unlucky, candidates to participate in its campaign to wean off its die hard customers from its (darned good) Windows XP operating system (and drive, force, if you will, by making life miserable for them, them towards upgrading to Windows7). You see, nowadays whenever I switch on my computer, I notice that the Microsoft Security Essentials and Windows Defender that I have come to rely on to keep my computer safe for a while now, have stopped working mysteriously. Both programs are silent on why they stop, but are loud and clear that you're at risk and quote "Microsoft Security Essentials is not monitoring your system. You must start it." Sure, the necessary lighted red button was there for your convenience. If after clicking on it nothing happens (returning to normal), you're advised to restart your computer, and so on. For the Windows Defender it is even worse. I don't mind having to click on any buttons as long as it works and it's there. But that's not the case with Windows Defender; sometimes it's there next to its sibling on the task bar, sometimes I have to search here and there to bring it back so that I can have the pleasure (sic) of clicking on buttons, button such as quote, "click here to on windows defender and open." But, heck, sometimes it rectifies itself even though I have yet to even click the 'on' button. I have a feeling Microsoft welcomes you to use both its software (as always, after so many clicks later, it announces (to your welcome relief): You are protected. They just want you to not forget that you're using a damned good anti-virus for free. But then again, Microsoft may be very fond of red color, as everything it touches or owns invariably turns to gold ...er...red. Without fail, for the last two months I am greeted with this color highlighting the malfunctioned Security Essentials, and a not very red (orange) Windows Defender. The annoying thing is, any or both can turn red anytime, even while you're in the middle of something. While Microsoft has the right to turn off anything it wants or even discontinue the Windows XP, it should remember it was this operating system that made it what today. It should be patient with its Windows7 while continuing to make Win XP available. Otherwise, it (the arbitrary turning off of the said security programs) could backfire...like, sic, what happened to the legendary farmer who killed his goose which could lay a golden egg a day because he wanted all the eggs at once. Have you guys encountered similar problems? moreResolved Question: Antivir Solution Pro virus infected my computer? How to remove virus?
Yesterday my Windows Vista laptop got a virus, its Antivir Solution Pro. It claims that the computer has infections and that they have to do a scan, and states all sorts of problems and then asks you to purchase the full version. It won't let me start up internet or use any programs (Word, Paint, Spybot) claiming that the files are infected. After doing "Safe Mode networking" and restoring my computer, my computer worked well again for another day. It ran the way it has always been without the annoying Antivir pop-ups, and the internet began working again. I feared the virus wasn't gone, just "covered up" or 'hidden". But the pop-ups returned again. I did the same thing as I did yesterday by restoring my options in safe-mode, and now my computer runs again. I'm afraid the pop ups will return shortly and may even get worse. How can I remove this virus? I don't have any important files on my laptop, so there isn't much I need to back up other than my music. Are there any free* programs that I can download to my computer that can wipe-out this virus? Which can be the most efficient? Is there anything worse that this virus could do to harm my computer or information? Various websites that I have looked at say that downloading "Microsoft Security Essentials" won't be able to recognize or find the virus. I don't have much anti-virus software, other than Spybot because most of my programs are expired. One person I asked told me that I should download "Microsoft Solutions" or some program from the microsoft website that can clean up all of my infections. Other websites say that I should download a program to a flash drive on another computer, and put that flash drive into my infected computer, but I'm afraid that the flash-drive will also get infected and won't be able to run the software, even when my computer is functioning and the virus is "hidden." Can someone give me a method that is a sure way to rid the virus effectively, preferable easy and free*? And tell me what it will do to my computer to remove this? It is a "Windows Vista home premium" if that helps. Thanks moreVoting Question: Vista Black Screen after Login!?

My grandfather's computer will not get any security updates for Microsoft Office 2003. His OS is Windows XP and it continues to try to download and install the updates as part of automatic updates, but it always fails. Initially I assumed a virus or something, but I have run Malwarebytes, Spybot Search and Destroy, Ad-Aware, and his anti-spyware program, (I forget the name of it), and none of them find any problems. Is this software just simply outdated? What could be the problem, and how can I fix this? It doesn't really seem to bother him, but it sure annoys me when I use his computer and the stupid little icon is constantly telling me there are updates ready to install.I don't remember an error code being listed, but I'll check again next time I'm over there. I too thought maybe SP3 was missing, but I installed it so I don't think I would have forgotten to do that, (but it is completely possible). This wasn't a pop up error message by the way, it just fails to install the updates after downloading them. Oddly enough even though the install fails, the computer tries to finish installing them when I shut the computer down. I'll look for some error codes next time I'm over there moreResolved Question: Computer Security Programs that are "enough"?
Hey everybody I got some questions on which security programs I should use in each category. Im going to list some of the programs I know, and then you can tell me which one I should use based on your experience and what you got. 1. Anti virus = Microsoft Security Essentials, Avast, Antivir, AVG 2. Spyware/Adware/Malware = SuperAntiSpyware, Malware-Bytes, Ad-aware, Spy-bot SD, Windows Defender 3. Firewall = Zone Alarm, Windows Firewall The main thing I want is computer performance (resource usage) over security because I am starting to notice slow-downs. I know my preferences sounds reckless, but my surfing habits are not. I am currently using Avast, SAS, MB, and Zone Alarm. The setup I am really interested in is MSE, Win D, and Win F. Is it enough? What are your thoughts and ideas? The reason for my interest in Microsoft programs is because they seem to not slow down my laptop, whereas 3rd party programs needs to load and thus decrease computer reaction time. Thanks. PS: My OS is Windows 7 Ultimate 32-bit PSS: Which browser do you use? I used to use Chrome and contradicting to what it is supposed to do, it was slower and uses ALOT more memory than firefox. moreResolved Question: BROWSER keeps freezing!!! HELP!!!?

Hey. Well...yesterday I was using my laptop(Just surfing the internet) while my PC performed a virus scan(Using Microsoft Essentials). When suddenly...my entire PC locked up. The screen froze, I couldn't use the mouse etc. After a minute of hopelessly trying to get it to unfreeze, a blue screen of death popped up. It was something about "Unable to read hardrive". It reccomended I restarted so I did...and the laptop worked perfectly. I recieved no further errors... Once I turned the laptop on, windows gave me a message stating it had recovered from a serious error. Anyway, I performed a harddrive check up...but the check up found no problems. So my question is...Should I be worried about this? Or was this just a one off error... I DO in fact have a minor virus(The google redirect), but I've managed to block it using firefox noscript(No anti spyware/malware tools have been able to detect it(Including Hitman Pro, Malwarebytes, norton etc.)) Could this of caused it? (Note I've never experienced an error like this on this laptop, this was the first time it has occured) Also...I've noticed that over the last few days I've been having minor freezes(All when surfing the internet)...nothing serious or anything, just the odd freeze when loading a webpage or tab. However it unfreezes itself after opening windows task manager or by simply waiting. ...So should I be worried? Or was this error simply a one off... I'm on windows Vista btw. Thanks. :) moreResolved Question: Is my microsoft office program file corrupted by a virus?

When booted into Normal Mode, after I have logged in and the Desktop has loaded, 'The Blue Screen Of Death' pops up with the following information on it: A problem has been detected and Windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer. If this is the first time you've seen this Stop Error Screen please restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps: Disable or uninstall any anti-virus, disk defragmentation or backup utilities. Check your hard drivers. Run CHKDSK /F to check for hard drive corruption, and then restart your computer. Also the computer that is affected I don't use very often, so I won't know much about software and downloads, but I will tell you everything that I know that has happened with to computer recently: The computer has been getting slow, I think this is due to the fact that my brother has 'World Of Warcraft' downloaded and he likes to use 'Curse Client' to download add on's for the game. Messenger Programmes and Software to open Zip Files have been downloaded. A Music Programme for Guitar Tabs was downloaded. The computer recently recovered from 'Antimalwear Doctor' (which was a real pain in the arse to remove), and several Anti Spyware programmes have been downloaded and uninstalled during the process of removing 'Antimalwear Doctor'. Then 'The Blue Screen Of Death' started appearing. The general information for the computer: Microsoft Windows XP, Home Edition, Version 2002, Service Pack 3 Dell Dimension DM051, Intel Pentium D CPU 2.80GHz 2.79GHz, 1.00 GB of RAM Other important stuff: Everything that needs to be done to sort out this problem needs to be able to do in Safe Mode, as the computer is literally unusable in Normal Mode. The Internet doesn't work when booted into Safe Mode with Networking, when the computer is on the internet doesn't work on neither the laptop or my personal computer (the affected computer is the main, it has the modem and wireless router), but when off the internet works fine on the laptop and my personal computer. The computer beeps just before login (Normal Mode). I have tried System Restore and restating the computer, I don't have to original disk. I have given you all the information about the computer I can at the moment, I really hope someone can help me out. Thanks for taking the time to read all the information. moreVoting Question: What is Microsoft up to? For the last one month or so I've been living in hell (sic) and swimming in the?
oil-tainted waters (sic) of the gulf of Mexico.I am afraid I have been chosen as an unlucky, if not one of the unlucky, candidate to participate in its campaign to wean its die hard customers from its (darned good) Windows XP operating system (and drive, force, if you will, by making life miserable for them, them towards upgrading to Windows7). Have you guys encountered similar problems? moreVoting Question: Turned off microsoft security essentials?

Hi, I'm currently running Windows 7 and recently i have been unable to install updates or download things from SOME websites, all the diognostics say its due to a firewall problem. All right so a day ago my computer that is running windows xp home, alerted me that it was infected with something so I turned it off so i could reboot in safe mode. Except when i try to boot in safe mode it lists a couple items on white on the screen and stops on one which says something along the lines of Partition/something/windows/apppatch/drvmain.sdb. So i took out the hard drive and put it in another computer and ran a virus scan with a few different anti-virus and anti spyware programs, and I believe i removed all issues. However I still can't boot past that part in its original casing or er tower I guess. I have the disc to do a repair install, but will it work? Okay... I followed a link to a video for a tv show I wanted to watch, but now I'm pretty sure it was a fake site. Now I have three different "anti-virus" programs with warning windows popping up every twenty seconds. My anti-virus/spyware software is Microsoft Security Essentials. I figured I'd just open it, have it do a scan and get rid of these programs. But when I click on the icon to open MSE, a warning from one of these fake programs pops up and says that the program is infected, and then I can't open it. This occurs with almost anything I try to open, even in the Control Panel (I tried removing one of the delinquent programs, but of course it wouldn't let me and prompted me with the same warning). Help!!! Two nights in a row I got the blue screen (not good!!) but during the day I had no problems. Okay, so my friend let me try and fix his laptop and so i cleared out a bunch of unwanted programs that were just basic things, like an old calculator application, and some random game downloads and such. Well, he got this virus it appears from a modding website that we were trying to work. So now he gave the laptop to me and i was gonna try and download Trend Micro PC Pro but it say that his laptop doesn't fit the criteria. His laptop is running Windows XP 2002 version with Service Pack 3 but even though its already updated on that part fully (there are only 3 service packs) its still will not let me download any the software so i think i need to update it to a higher model, so my choices are either Windows 7 or Windows Vista. WELL HERE'S THE PROBLEM, i go to download, from the microsoft official website, anything that may help update his laptop and allow me to download some help, turns out every time i go to download "anything" and i mean "ANYTHING" it will redirect me to a basic "web page not found" or one of those "HTML40 something not working" and there are some other different ones i get. I know im connected to the internet so im sure that its the virus that is preventing me from downloading anything. I've already restored the system this time making sure not to clean out any programs that may help with downloads but it still isn't progressing anything. Does anyone have any idea what to do? I just spent the last 14 hours working on this thing but i've only taken Computer Applications 1 when a High-school Freshman so i Absolutely no clue, im afraid im gonna be forced to randomly delete things that look foreign until something works and i don't want to do that. I restarted my computer in safe mode w/ networking and did a virus scan and nothing came up. So i tried to download a different anti-malware program. If someone knows which program to choose so it'll run that'd be cool. Or if you have a different solution I'm all ears!! moreVoting Question: Why does my computer shut down randomly?
Recently my laptop has been shutting itself down at complete random. It is not the battery because it's always plugged in. I can't seem to link anything as all three times it has done this I haven't been downloading on random sites or anything. There is no warning and it shuts down quite calmly; no loud computer whining noises. It also doesn't show the screen where it says "Shutting down...". Does my computer have a virus or something? I have Microsoft Security Essentials and CA Anti-Virus and I have scanned for anything but it seems fine. BTW I'm using Windows Vista and an ASUS laptop. If anyone has experienced this or has some suggestions, please give some advice. Thanks in advance. moreResolved Question: Avast, avira, or microsoft essentials?
I know all these are pretty good free anti-virus but which provides the best protection without slowing down my computer? Or is there another brand I should consider? Whenever I run a html file from my computer explorer freezes, then 1-2 minutes later it finally opens it. I use firefox so its not to do with the browser. Also if I run website shortcuts, exact same thing 1-4 minutes later it opens and by then I don't need it anymore. This doesn't just effect my clicking, whenever any program tries to open a link to their website it freezes! 2 minutes later it loads and I am just sick of this.Does anyone have any ideas what may have happened to the explorer, shell32.dll, or something else? Or even better, does anyone know how to fix this annoying problem? It also effects start > search tool.It has been doing this for awhile, I have Avast anti virus and Zone alarm firewall. Those are what I would guess but avast never had problems. Zone alarm did have troubles installing at first though. I also have a microsoft fingerprint reader it increases time it takes to startup, would it effect explorer too?Any suggestions are welcome, thanks for your help!! moreResolved Question: COMPUTER VIRUS HELP!!!!!!?
Hey guys, I am usin Windows XP with Service Pack 3. Recently, my taskbar and start menu have gone missing. I have tried Control+Escape, running explorer/explorer.exe through task manager, and dragging my mouse on the bottom, top, and sides didnt work either. Also, when I try to open Malwarebytes Anti Malware, it says vbalsgrid6.ocx could not be opened or something like that. Microsoft Security Essentials does not start. Windows Installer says "installer could not be accessed". No sound comes from my computer, and i cannot install sound drivers either. I cannot use drag and drop, or cut, copy, or paste. I tried turning on the computer in safe mode but I can't run Malwarebytes or Windows Security Essentials from there either. I really don't know what else to try. I don't want to reinstall because I have some important files on there. And I'm pretty sure there is also a keylogger if anyone can help me get rid of that. Trojans are also probably in there but I'm not sure. Please, if anyone can help, I would really appreciate it. Thanks in advance! Also, I tried running the computer in safe mode, and safe mode with networking. It won't even start. I tried installing the antivirus software on my laptop and transferring via flashdrive, but it seems no matter which software i use, some type of error message pops up, and I can't use the antivirus. moreVoting Question: What was my computer infected with?
OK, so I infected my laptop with a virus today and had to wipe it. >_< all my stuff, gone in a second. Now I want to know what the hell caused it. Before beginning: I have an Asus and Windows 7 Basic. I was downloading a ROM from www.coolrom.com and while I was writing an email to the ownder of the site, a full screen message popped up saying my registery was infected and I need to back it up. The message was from Microsoft Security Essentials, which I was using as an anti-virus. At the time, I didn't know what DrWatson.exe was, I now know its the Microsoft debugger. I had just found it odd that I couldn't exit out of it or select anything, even the task manager... After turning the computer off and on a couple times, it still happened. I decided then to let the program run. After nothing happened, I turned the computer off again. That's when things went to hell... When I turned it back on, It started downloading FLV Video Decoder and the mouse was moving back and forth on its own and it scared the crap out of me, so I turned the computer off AGAIN, and took it to Geeksquad to wipe it clean... I ended up using the Windows 7 recovery tool with their help and didn't have to spend $200. I thank them for that, but $100 to backup everything? ;_; (cries) I couldn't go through with that. Damn my empty wallet. Now I want to know the name of this damn virus, bot, malware-crap WHATEVER it was so I can learn more about it. Vengence will be mine... mwahahaha... (ok not really I couldn't write my own program even if my life depended on it.) Sooo... Can anyone help?Another thing. The Geeksquad guy analyzed the laptop and said it was a virus, it had infected the registry, and it was programmed to activate itself after some amount of time. moreResolved Question: Windows Live One Care says it couldn't turn on firewall?
I had a virus on my computer and properly restored to the first restore point using the full recovery which deletes everything except what the PC had when you first buy it. It is working like new and I bought and installed Microsoft's own Windows Live One Care anti-malware software. If you are familiar with it, you understand that if the icon is red meaning the PC is at great risk from attacks. When I try the "Change Settings" link a window pops up and says, "Unknown problems are preventing One Care settings from being displayed." When I check the firewall that came with the computer (Windows Firewall) it says everything is okay. However it was always like that even when I got the virus. Thanks, For the help. moreVoting Question: After i scanned my computer with anti-virus program, this message came up about "broken digital signature".?
