Anti Pc Software Virus Questions asked

Open Question: Computer Problems, please help?

I actually have a few of them, along with a couple of questions, firstly, about a week an a half ago at night my computer started freezing, it would freeze for 10 seconds then be fine for about 30 seconds, then freeze for 10 seconds then be fine for 30 seconds, over and over. Now, I'm no computer expert but I know basically what I need to know, I'm cheap and pretty much broke so I only own free anti/virus/malware/spyware software however, it works well it enough(atleast I think) I scanned and found no virus no malware or spyware and tried system restore about 3 different times, so I thought maybe it's something physical, so I open up the tower to clean the power supply fan, but ended up breaking it... So, now I need a new psu,(I was thinking that the psu was main problem like it was overheating, but I still dont know if it was causing the freezing) I want to buy a new psu but my computer tower is too small to fit just any psu, plus the way everything is arranged inside the tower theres no way I could fit a normal sized psu in there, here is the power supply that I currently own http://www.amazon.com/Genuine-Dell-OptiPlex-Dimension-Numbers/dp/B000MMHJ5U/ref=sr_1_3?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1283097877&sr=1-3 It's the only type that I think will fit in my pc tower, hopefully I'm wrong, I am still able to use my PC but it is still freezing and will only stay on for a couple hours if I haven't used it for a while, here is the PC that I own http://www.amazon.com/Dell-Computer-Gigantic-Microsoft-Authorized/dp/B001O79HNO/ref=sr_1_13?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1283391198&sr=1-13 so basically I need to know what is causing the freezing and how to fix it and need to know what psu I should get that will FIT, ask questions if theres anything else you need to knowSpecs- Dell, 698gb Hardrive, 2.99gb RAM, Pentium 4 CPU 3.00GHz 2.99GHz more

Open Question: PC Problem HELP Needed ASAP?

Hi everyone, I am a 21 year old student, who has a computer I bought for 99 pound to do college work etc on. Recently the computer has been giving me alot of problems..as the store I bought it from gave me Windows XP when they bought it. When I went onto windoes media play it said that windows isn't a genuine version? So I went back to the store and they fixed it. Now months have gone bye and I have removed AVG, the anti-virus that the store put on the PC as it was telling me when I was downloading films from TinyDL and Puregrime, where I pay monthly subscription that there was Trojans attached to the files. However when I asked it to remove or quarantine it it wouldn't, therefore I deleted the program and put McAfee on..Mcafee was working fine until I tried to uninstall it and a few other programs to clear up space. With some software it says the 'unistall.log' cannot be find. With other it just says delete failed,my friend told me to install NET Regestery to fix the problem but it hasn't although it removed certain items, I now have been using a AVZ anti-virus which is portable, it scanned my PC and said it found no errors. But yet I cannot disk deframagrent my PC as it states that CHK DISK cannot be found? On top of this the situation has got worse with the fact that now everytime I start the computer it says 'Computer needs to be checked for consisty or something and when I click ok..it crashes up on saying 'Inserting Index entry 25' and it goes on the screen 30-40 times. Now the problem I face ie obviously I bought this PC cheap in a deal and don't have XP anywhere..what can I do please? I'm lucky to have all of my most important items on a back up Hard drive although I have a few assignments in my documents. Please help me asap! more

Open Question: Virus alert to anyone who checks their email!?

just got this sent to me in an email thats going around trying to inform everyone..wouldn't want this to happen to you! not sure if its real or not but ABSOLUTELY better safe than sorry: "Anyone-using Internet mail such as Yahoo, Hotmail, AOL and so on. This information arrived this morning, Direct from both Microsoft and Norton Please send it to everybody you know who has Access to the Internet. You may receive an apparently harmless e-mail titled 'Mail Server Report' If you open either file, a message will appear on your screen saying: 'It is too late now, your life is no longer beautiful....' Subsequently you will LOSE EVERYTHING IN YOUR PC, And the person who sent it to you will gain access to your Name, e-mail and password. This is a new virus which started to circulate on Saturday afternoon. AOL has already confirmed the severity, and the anti virus software's are not capable of destroying it.. The virus has been created by a hacker who calls himself 'life owner'. " more

Resolved Question: Sims 2 crash problem on Gateway MT6728 laptop w/ Vista Home Premium?

I'm asking this for my someone I know who needs help but is unwilling to ask herself. She has bought a copy of the Sims 2 for PC and this is the issue she is experiencing: The crash usually occurs right after the game appears to load, or after a part of the game (such as a map or level) tries to load.Does anyone know what could be the main problem? All of the programs are closed (while playing the game) including any anti-virus software such as Norton.I personally think maybe her video card is simply too weak to handle the game but she's able to play fine until such crash appears so that baffles me.Last but not least are the specs of the laptop:Gateway MT6728* Intel Pentium Dual-Core T2330 Dual Core Mobile Processor* 2GB PC2-5300 DDR2 Memory* 160GB 5400rpm SATA Hard Drive* 8x DVD+/-RW Dual Layer Burner with Label Flash* Intel GMA X3100 Integrated GraphicsThanks,blizzard_beast more

Voting Question: After virus, computer left with Windows Sidebar, System Restore, and Podcasting Issues?

So my computer had a virus/spyware/malware called "Anti-Vir" which prevented any .exe's from running, posing as Windows and trying to get me to buy the "Anti-Vir" software. I used Malwarebytes in safe mode to remove the virus and everything was running smoothly, save podcasts and Windows Sidebar Gadgets (only those that sync online for updates like WeatherBug and a news feed). They wouldn't update past July 30th, the date my pc became infected, so I tried a system restore to a date prior a couple of times, continually receiving an error that the system restore did not work. How do I go about fixing this, and getting my podcasts/gadgets back? Thanks more

Resolved Question: How do I get rid of a nasty 'trojan horse' virus?

Recently my pc got a virus, I think its quite a nasty and well buried trojan horse. The problem is it seems to be blocking my AVG anti-virus program and will not let it start up at all. My windows security alert keeps telling me to switch on malware protection but the virus won't let me turn anything on! I have tried downloading other anti-virus software such as Avast, Avira, Spybot search & destroy and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware but it just stops the download dead after the verification stage. I have also tried a system restore but this makes no difference. What can I do its bugging the hell out of me! Cheers. more

Resolved Question: Am I being paranoid about a computer virus?

I use a PC and a while ago I was using google when I clicked on a site. The site said that my computer was at risk of a virus attack and procceeded to direct me to a page or something (I couldnt see clearly) where there was a bar indicating something was being downloaded. Then a pop up appeared saying "do you want XXX.exe to make changes to your hard disk" I clicked no, and shut the browser before the 'downloading' (i don't know if it was really downloading anything) could finish. I know there was no virus on my laptop because it was new and I don't visit ant dodgy websites. But after that incident, I've gotten quite paranoid. I have mcafee, but after that I installed anti-malwarebyte too. I havent noticed anything different with my PC - it still runs the same, but i'm just paranoid now. Do I have a virus? I did full scans on my computer with both software and they came back fine. I even scanned my computer when it was in safe mode and they said there was no virus. But this has really freaked me out and is there a possibility that the scans failed to pick something up? Also, sometimes after I come back to my computer after i leave it for a long period of time my anti-malwarebyte software would say "successfully blocked potential malware from 121.XXXX" - i've never gotten this before and i don't know what it is. Is it from cookies or is someone trying to mess with my PC? Please help, thank you very much!Ok, thank you guys! I was just panicking because my computer was quite new and I didn't want it damaged/infected! I asked my friends what to do and I was met with blank stares. And thanks for the really fast replies! more

Resolved Question: How do I remove a virus (trojan horse) from my pc?

Ok, a couple of days ago my pc started trying to download some kind of fake 'anti virus' software, obviously this was something dodgy so I tried stopping it but to no avail. At the minute my anti virus software, Avast, will find the virus but not delete or repair the threat (which after scanning is listed as 'high' and a trojan horse), I originally had AVG but it did not get rid of the threat so I un-installed it to try Avast. I have also tried doing a system restore but this won't work either. The Windows security centre will not work, it asks me to start it but a box just appears saying 'security centre cannot be started'. My pc seems to be running ok but I know there is something lurking in the background! What should I do, is clearing the whole system and starting again my only option? I would rather not, but these free online security programs don't seem to be working! more

Voting Question: How can I fix my browsers when they won't connect?

A couple of weeks ago my computer automatically downloaded and installed an update from Microsoft, after which I suddenly became unable to connect to the internet through any of my browsers (Firefox, IE, Opera). My wireless connectivity is excellent, and I have no problem accessing the network, but when I open my browsers, they will not connect to any site, period! What's more, my IM wouldn't connect and my Anti-virus was not able to update either. After doing some research, I discovered that a number of people encountered the same issues after installing a recent batch of MS updates. Several victims have pointed the finger at their firewalls. At the time that I first encountered the issue, I was using PC Tools Anti-virus software and the XP firewall. I disabled both and tried to access the net again, but to no avail. I have uninstalled the Anti-virus software (been meaning to replace it anyway), reinstalled my browsers, triple-checked the proxy settings, and even tried a revert back to before the update was installed... still, nothing has changed. If anyone has any idea of what the heck is going on and how to fix it, I would be most appreciative. more

Resolved Question: Anti Virus Software Help!!!!?

So, I have the full version of Mcafee, the best one, my dad's company gives all of its employees full unlimited subscription to it so it won't expire. However, I have recently heard of things like MIcrosoft security essentials and other free stuff. Are those a replacement for a full blooded Anti-virus like Norton or my Mcafee? Are they better? Last question, I also have a netbook and a tiny fujitsu tablet PC, I use them less than my laptop and desktop, btw. So, I am very annoyed when Mcafee cripples both of them using atom processors when running virus scans, even quick scans. So would Microsoft security essentials be perfect in that regards? I heard it only takes 7mb of space too? Please help, thank you more

Resolved Question: Hey need a little more help. Security tool virus is still trippin on my pc.?

.Back story: I downloaded some game, got Security Tool virus and maybe others. Did some research, read I should download a security scan, then, malwarebytes, then antis-pyware, or try to manually remove the virus(es) or buy anti-spyware/removal like AVG and let them do it. Well first I tried downloading a scan and malwarebytes, but only after restarting my computer in safe mode was I able to run the programs. Then I did a system restore.????? And no sign of the virus but I wonder if u do that, does Security Tool reallly completely go away? and not show up disguised with its files. Anyway I did the first two steps,(wish I knew how to it manually do it) Now recently took my hp windows 7 desktop to geek sqaud (because of security tool,) They ran a free diognostics and said they found some viruses, and wanted me to pay 200 dollars for them to fix it. I said no cause I would like to fix it manually first, then if that don't work, buy good, fairly inexpensive security software with nice warranty/coverage/and support and that won't slow down my pc.But I also read I would have to Disguise/change the new securtiy program or files to prevent any viruses from detecting and blocking it? ls this neccasary? If so how do I it? (And will TREND MICRO ANTIVIRUS + ATISPYWARE CD work.) Hey need a little more help.THANK YOU! more

Resolved Question: How do I rid my PC of Wireshark Antivirus?

There is an angry looking "Wireshark Antivirus" Security System series of pop ups that has chosen to commandeer my PC. It's obviously a phishing / malware / antivirus thingy. It won't let me run any programs. When I right click on it there are no menus to show me the properties or source. There are three tiny little shield shaped icons on the menu in the lower right corner of my screen. I don't know any legit programs that get three identical icons on the same menu. It says all my files have been infected and it wants me to 'purchase a full version' before it will clear everything away. Google says that Wireshark is a protocol analyzer. So the creator was crafty enough to use a legit company as their cover. Wireshark does not make Anti virus software though. I can still open the task manager and the control panel. I can't find it to uninstall it. I tried to use the task manager to shut it off, but the pop ups just pop back up. I'm running Windows Vista Home Premium 32-bit Operating System on an emachines if that helps. Any ideas what I can do to rip this thing out by its trachea?I did NOT install anything. I was on Flickr searching for pictures of cake when "wireshark antivirus" security warning popped up. All I found on google to help me was this: http://www.cacetech.com/news/2010/08/wireshark-antivirus-malware/◘◘◘◘ What I wound up doing was restarting my computer, then super fast I sought out Norton Antivirus (already on my computer / expired obviously.) Norton isn't that great but if you click on the renew my subscription option it will give you safe un-interupted internet access. Which I used to open a new tab. I proceeded to Download & Update Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for Free. I ran a full scan (took about 1 hr 50 minutes.) It found all the Wireshark Virus files. To be extra cautious I also downloaded a new version of CCleaner from piriform.com. After removal & reboot everything was fine! more

Resolved Question: Why does my PC keep asking me....?

My PC keeps asking me what program I want to use when I try to run ANYTHING. I think it's a virus. A while ago I had that virus that makes you think it's anti-viral software, then it stops with the pop ups and disappears. I know I've waited a while to seek help with this, but now I'm just over it and want it gone. I'm not sure, maybe I accidentally changed some setting. Thanks in advance. (It won't let me set the "Use this always to run this program" option.) more

Resolved Question: If/when I back up my files, will it include any viruses I may have?

I think my PC might have viruses and or someone using remote access on it. I used my anti virus software I have installed, adware, spybot and trend micro housecall all to no avail. I'm seeing my only other option is to resore my PC to original factory condition. Now my question is, if I backup all my files will that include any viruses I may have and allow someone to access my PC again after install? Also I never backed up any files before (never really had to) so what exactly should I do step by step before and after system restore (factory restore)? more

Resolved Question: Super slow computer help!?

okay so im at my grandmas house and her computer is slow as crap, (she clicks on spy-ware even after explaining not to and why) anyways she has some software that i'm not sure is legit such as, "PC SUPPORT" the desktop icon is a red circle with a white cross in it, "CyberDefender" icon for that is a red circle with a small c on it and on the back side of the "c" there are these dashes that go around it. The last one i've found is called "Anti-Virus Professional" and the icon is a wrench and a screw driver. Are these legit software or just more virus and spyware adding crap? thanks in advance. more

Resolved Question: Someone please help my fix my computer!?

I had a virus that put a fake anti-virus software on my computer. I got rid of the virus, but certain settings on my computer are changed and I cant change them back: 1: Every time I try to run an program, a box comes up asking me what program I want to open it with. 2: When in control panel, I get this error: c:\windows\system32\rundll32.exe application cannot be found. 3: When I try to run rosetta stone off of my d drive it tells me "Operating system has denied access to specified file." 4: I have tried to put avira, avg and avast on my pc and none of them will finish installing. Can someone please tell me what to do? I am so sick of what this stupid virus did to my computer and I don't have a lot of money to pay someone to fix it. Thanks more
