Open Question: Best FREE Anti-Virus software?
I just recently reformatted my PC because I had a virus. My Anti-virus stuff obviously wasn't good enough so I thought maybe I should ask around. I'm looking for some really great, but free programs for: -Virus protection -Spyware protection -Adware/Malware protection I have looked myself but I don't trust my own judgment. I always seem to get stuff that messes up my computer when I'm trying to protect it. Links and a little info would be nice. moreOpen Question: What is the best anti-virus software for a windows XP "PC" ?

Hello folks. This is my issue. My laptop has a virus and now I cannot even operate it in safe mode to recover my files. My plan is to pull the HD and use an enclosure to connect to my backup PC so I can transfer my files. My question is which is the best antivirus/anti malware program/software to find and get rid of the problem on my HD. Pardon me if I didn't use the right words or programs, but I know I need something to get rid of the virus. Are there free versions I can find online? Also, what are the best antivirus, internet security, etc programs that I must have on my computer going forward, preferably free? Thanks for helping out! moreOpen Question: Best FREE Anti-Spyware?
What is the best free anti-spyware software? I just ended my subscription to McAfee and have started using Avast! Anti-virus (much better, and free!). As this is only for viruses, I was wondering what I should use to protect my PC from spyware. Thanks in advance! Also, I have always used firefox. I'm not that bad at computers to use IE. (: moreOpen Question: Moral Dillema. Should I password my computer from my roommate (the only computer in the house)?More details->?
Ok. I have a nice computer which i am very fond of because it cost me a lot of money and I bought all the parts separate and set it all up myself. I am big on PC performance so I don't run anti-virus software. I have never had a virus in my life. I don't use my computer for stuff that would infect me. No weird porn, torrents, kazaa, whatever. Anyway, today, the 4th time in the last year, I come home from work to find a note on my keyboard that says sorry that he got a bad virus on my computer again, sorry, blah blah. This time it was internet security 2010, which is a major pain to remove, plus with all the registry changes that trojan makes, who knows the long term damage. I have removed it but here is my dilemma. I work, live, drink, smoke bowls and hang out with my roommate every day(the purpose of that information is to explain our relationship). He's a good friend. I don't want to be a dick, or make it an uncomfortable environment but I am sick of the viruses. I've thought about it and here are some options ive come up with. Can you all help steer me towards to best one, or offer a new option? 1.Ignore it, the virus is removed. Man up, don't be a baby and move on. 2.Password my computer and tell him sorry but i've put too much money into this thing to risk him messing it up. 3.Password my computer and tell him that if he wants to use the computer, go buy some good anti virus software, i'll install it on a seperate user account so it won't have to run when I'm on the computer. ( i have this feeling that if i did this option he would find the crappiest, possibly even free, virus software, never update, and therefore it becomes useless) Just a little side note. I am positive that he doesn't mean to get viruses, I am also positive that he's the kinda computer illiterate that sees an internet pop up saying "you have a virus, click here to get rid of it", and thinks he's doing me a favor when he downloads every trojan known to man. ha. moreOpen Question: Hidden use of internet detected on my PC?

I've been playing Dead Frontier for a while now and I have never experienced any kinds of lag at all. The lag started this morning and I do not know why.... So I checked the processes tab in my Task Manager and it said I was running a software which name I didn't recognize... So, I researched it *It was EM_EXEC.exe* and Google said it was LogiTech mouseware? I don't have LogiTech mouseware.... It also said that Malware/Viruses use this name to get past anti-virus programs. I ran virus scans, nothing. I did a system defragmentation...Didn't help... I tried to just end the process (lol, the only thing that sorta worked) and I haven't seen it re-appear yet. But my problem still wasn't solved... I was still lagging! The lag is a 2 second freeze in 5 seconds intervals, and it's driving me crazy! I can't game like this... **It is not a Pay & Install game, it's an open browser MMORPG, check it out and tell me if it's not just my PC; www.deadfrontier.com** moreResolved Question: Help with rouge anti virus software removal?
The name of it is Paladin Anti-Virus and it downloaded its self on my moms Tablet PC and I've deleted it (and the pornography files it downloaded along with it) in the Program Files but the Icon in the task bar is still there and if I right-click it, it'll give me two options and which are "Restore Paladin Anti-Virus" and "Exit" if I press exit it still restores it. Its no longer popping up in the task bar alerts saying "Virus Trojan Found" or something like that but I still cannot open some applications and stuff like that. I cannot download Malware-Bytes from the flash drive or online. I'm willing to restore it to factory settings if I have to but please help. Thanks, Sasuka. moreVoting Question: I discovered an anti-spyware scan on my PC. What should I do?
Recently I was on a website where a virus threat appeared out of nowhere and I feel worried by this latest threat. I was then sent to the anti-spyware scan on Windows Internet Explorer and a scanning process was performed; it discovered threats on document folders and hard drives. The red labeling said "Your computer could be infected". But I have the AVG Free 9.0 software that scans for viruses and other threats by itself and I have no idea that anything out of the ordinary could appear when nothing goes wrong on the Internet - ever. I want to have a full system cleanup but I'm not sure if that's going to work. I already have the AVG software installed on my PC and I don't want to download any more security programs unless I want to. And with the Windows Security Alert that already detected trojans and ready to remove them, I'm unsure about the effectiveness of cleaning up the computer with downloading software that may or may not be safe. I don't know how often such scans would appear out of nowhere when I'm anywhere on the Web (I was on Photobucket when I discovered it), but if I don't want to see that again, then I must not go back to using Internet Explorer again. On Mozilla Firefox I never run across such scans. And I use a laptop but not a regular computer with the monitor regularly. What do I do if I unintentionally run into anti-spyware scans that I may or may not trust? If I ever trust them would I do what I'm instructed to do? If I don't trust such alerts would I lose protection of my PC forever? moreOpen Question: are these free security software is a good choice? are they compatible with each other?

I believe I just lost my pc to a trojan, I'm getting it looked at soon but I am buying a new laptop with windows 7, the premier version and I want to step up security measures to protect my new laptop. Hello and thank you to anyone who helps I will put as much information as possible as I know the smallest thing could be the solution. I am not a computer expert - just an average PC user I live in Japan my computer cost lots more so it is English friendly 7 months ago ... the seller charges a small fortune to even speak to you on the phone when you have a problem (I have now discovered .. the word warranty has no meaning at all) System information: emachines desktop, Windows XP professional two hard-drives C and D processor model IntelR CeleronR CPU 2.66GHz Motherboard BIOSTAR Group G31-M7 TE Monitor IIYama and the Sound Card RealTek - I have no speakers the sound comes from a speaker in the monitor. It started with echoing sound and so I tried to solve it looking online for solutions it seemed it could be an outdated driver - I could not find an update free online so I paid for Driver Detective because it said there were 13 out of date drivers ---- it found NONE of these out of date drivers ...waste of 30 dollars that. I also did a Registry check on advice I did not pay for one but used a free one and out of 750 registry problems the software said it fixed all. I also did full anti-virus checks on the entire system with Avast and Ad-Aware ... advast found two issues and solved them and Ad-Aware found none. I have done four system restore - all dates after the sound issue started and none solved the problem I can no-longer system restore to a date before the problem. I have done all Windows XP updates I have done all updates on drivers and software including for example Intel ... Dectective Driver still says there are 5 driver issues but Intel website says I am up to date with all drivers. The other drivers that Detective Driver says I have out of date drivers relate to the mouse (which is about the only thing that seems to have no problems ... at the moment) and the RealTek sound driver but I have been everywhere with that from the companies website you get nothing thats helped. I have reinstalled and reinstalled - SMPlayer and VLC player. The sound is worse than ever and the computer works like it is walking thru settling cement ... slow and choppy I can only run on program at a time two and they both can hardly work for example internet and itunes playing music neither work - singularly they work but very slow and with two programs running CPU is always 100%. I have lots of memory left I have done defragmentation on all three hard-drives as well as disk clean up. My computer is my lifeline ... living in a foreign country its what I have apart from my ipod ... my pc is my communication, entertainment and link to family and friends ... I would very very very much appreciate any help resolving ....thank youThank you I appreciate the reply - but I can not reinstall Windows the store never gave me any discs, remember I am in Japan buying an English operating system here is difficult and expensive I paid double what I would in the UK for what I got and it took me two years to save for it. Buying Vista well I could save it but that would take about 6 months and everyone always complains about Vista ... so bad unuseable computer for 6 months and then buy something that might not be the solution ... tempting as that is, any other ideas nice people :)Cheers for taking the time guys but you are sending me to paid driver scam sorry scan websites I already did that with Driver Detective one of the companies that apppeared on that BEST DRIVER UPDATER IN THE WORLD blog page you linked to ... I paid it found me no solution I am certainly not going to pay another company .. any ideas that don't involve me using my rent money ? moreResolved Question: Pc Defender 2010? (Virus)?

It's a virus that has completely blocked me out of all my programs, such as Toolbar, start menu, task manager.. Ect. I desperatelty need help. moreResolved Question: I need some Techie Help.?
omg,i need help. My computer has this virus, right? So I put it in Safe Mode but I can't seem to fix without being forced to buy Spyware Doctor. And I don't wanna spend money (er, my parents money) on something I don't need to. So, if there's another way, please, share the wealth. What the Virus looks like: a link: http://i381.photobucket.com/albums/oo253/rawrdoriangrr/antivirus-soft.jpg it has a million pop ups and it won't let me open ANY files. it says like "file ____.exe could not be opened bc it may be infected," or we. so i looked up AntiVirus Soft on Google (like the brain I never had) and this is what i found. --------------------------------------------------------------- Antivirus Soft is classified as Rogue Anti-Spyware. After infecting a user’s system, it proceeds to scare its victim into buying the “product” by displaying fake security messages, stating that your computer is infected with spyware and only Antivirus Soft can help you to remove it after you download the trial version. As soon as the victim downloads Antivirus Soft trial version, it pretends to scan your computer and shows a grossly exaggerated amount of non-existent errors. Then, Antivirus Soft offers to buy the full version to fix these false errors. If the user agrees, Antivirus Soft does not only fix the errors, but it also takes the user’s money and may even install additional spyware into the victim’s computer. Some Rogue Anti-Spyware, such as Antivirus Soft, may offer users to buy it after the victim clicks on a banner or a pop-up while surfing the internet. Usually, a Trojan is installed to a victim’s computer after clicking on the advertisement. It then proceeds to download or even install Antivirus Soft, which is another way for Rogue Anti-Spyware to spread itself. Most of rogue Anti-Spyware, such as Antivirus Soft, is nearly impossible to remove manually. How to tell if your Computer is infected? Numerous undesirable and annoying pop-ups: A typical Rogue Anti-Spyware parasite keeps track of your internet browsing habits, sending your browsing history data to remote servers, owned by third party companies that use this information to advertise their products via numerous pop-ups, toolbars, hijacked homepages and spam letters. All these undesirable advertising methods are used on the victims of Rogue Anti-Spyware. Changed or new icons: Sometimes, Rogue Anti-Spyware installs unwanted software to a victim’s PC without user’s knowledge and consent. This may lead to slower PC performance and stability, as well as more unwanted programs you can't remove. moreResolved Question: Does Norton 360 Remove All Viruses Off Your Computer?

My Windows PC got infected with a virus disguised as an anti-virus suite...? I didn't download the trojan on purpose; I'm really careful when it comes to which sites i visit and what i download... I knew immediately that it was a virus because i remembered hearing about it awhile back. It told me my computer was infected, pretended to run a scan of my hard disk and then listed some fake viruses that it accused me of having. It then brought up a fake window that looks like the one that tells you whether you have a firewall and antivirus running. The window claimed that i was infected with spy-ware. The thing then kept trying to connect to The Internet using Internet Explorer (which isn't my default browser) and tried to get me to pay for it to remove the fake virusses from my computer. I disconnected my computer from The Internet and tried to run my real antivirus software (AVG Free 9.0, regularly updated) but the fake on wouldn't let me, i just kept getting messages saying that the registry entry for any application i tried to run was missing. The virus kept trying to get me to purchase it by telling me over and over again that i was infected and brought up the same message as soon as i would close it. After i had tried to close it many times, it started bringing up loads of Alert Icons in the toolbar, it created hundreds of them and did so so quickly i couldn't close them down fast enough. After rebooting my computer several times i had the same problems but noticed that if i opened an application as soon as the desktop appeared, the virus wouldn't stop me (if i waited a few more seconds it would do). First i tried running my antivirus and doing a scan, but the virus was creating so many taskbar icons it slowed my computer down to the point that the scan would stop. Also, the window i was running a scan in would be permanently situated behind the viruses messages. I was forced to do a system restore and this seems to have got rid of the damn thing. i was just reinfected with the same virus and system restore no longer gets rid of it It is stopping me running applications (even if i can run them i usually get runtime errors I cant update my antivirus or scan the computer, nor can i install programs Is there a solution that doesn't involve completely wiping my PC? VERY IMPORTANT , PLEASE READ THIS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Anyone-using Internet mail such as Yahoo, Hotmail, AOL and so on. This information arrived this morning, Direct from both Microsoft and Norton Please send it to everybody you know who has Access to the Internet. You may receive an apparently harmless e-mail titled 'Mail Server Report' . If you open either file, a message will appear on your screen saying: 'It is too late now, your life is no longer beautiful....' Subsequently you will LOSE EVERYTHING IN YOUR PC, And the person who sent it to you will gain access to your Name, e-mail and password. This is a new virus which started to circulate on Saturday afternoon. AOL has already confirmed the severity, and the anti virus software's are not capable of destroying it. The virus has been created by a hacker who calls himself 'life owner'. THIS HAS BEEN CONFIRMED BY SNOPES. http://www.snopes.com/computer/virus/mailserver.asp moreResolved Question: video playback on my brand new computer skip when i watch videos online i have it hooked up with a hdmi wire?

I currently have a very very old PC laptop and it yells at me a lot. I've decided it's time for me to get a new laptop as I've finally saved enough money. Should I get a PC laptop or a MacBook Pro? Price is not issue. I can afford both. Here is what I use my computer for: -internet: blog, youtube, hotmail, imdb, facebook -edit movies and videos -Microsoft Office: write essays, powerpoint, -edit/photoshop photos -Skype -msn -iTunes -download stuff PS: I heard Macs are faster turning on and are faster overall as they don't require anti-virus software. Also, please don't put into consideration the additional cost of buying new programs for Mac...as I would have to buy new programs for a new PC too because I lost my PC programs. moreResolved Question: My laptop computer freezes and makes a beeping noise, needs to manually be turned off, need help!?
So I thought my Dell laptop had a virus because while I was using it, my virus-software gave me the message that "exploit.pdf-js.gen" was detected AND deleted from my PC. My computer then worked for a few more minutes while I was loading a video, then it simply turned itself off without my command. It went to the "logging off" screen and turned off. I googled the file name my virus software gave me and learned that it was classified as a lower risk that attacked Adobe Acrobat Reader and PDF files. Now, when I turn my laptop on and try to run my anti-virus software for a scan, my computer freezes in the middle of the scan and I have to manually turn it off. I have tried to run the virus-software several times with the same results, sometimes with the computer making a constant beeping noise before I manually turn it off. If I try to run other programs, like the internet, it will work for a while but then freeze with the same results. Is this virus related, or could it be something else? Someone said it may be that the hard drive is failing. Any ideas? I don't know what to do =(ok so I guess it is a hardware issue, with the beeping noise. Thanks for the tip, I will try to see if I can get someone to fix it =) moreVoting Question: just ordered a dell desktop have a question?

Ok some days before I had this problem with my PC that it just wouldn't start,I mean it boots then shows "We are sorry for the inconvenience but windows was unable to boot because of certain hardware or software problem" and it shows 3 or 4 options like "safe Mode", "Last Known good configuration" "Start windows normally" and it would go off and restart again. I removed all the plugs and wires and reattached them but it was useless.Next day the engineer came & he booted it using a windows xp cd and formatted the c drive as he said files were corrupted. On that day it worked completely fine until I attached my pen drives to the PC. I had escan installed and it scanned the pen drives there were many files infected with viruses and it showed that it has deleted those infected files. I even scanned th entire system i.e C ,D ,E drive . So what do you think is the problem with my PC? The wires and switchboard are absolutely fine as I had it checked with an electrician. Next day I went to nearby cafe and scanned all my pen drives with avast anti virus it didn't detect a single virus or infected file. I have Windows XP Pro installed and server 2003. SO what is the problem with my PC? Guys Please read the entire question properly and answer . Thank you all in advance moreVoting Question: computer virus I can't get removed.?
every once in a while windows defender pops up and says I am infected with TrojanDownloader:Win32/Renos.jm , I click remove / delete and go on about my business but it always pops back up. whenever I open internet explorer it crashes, says checking for errors, then recomends I update my windows using auto update, I tried this, it attempted to install vista SP2, after which my computer would not boot up until i did a roll back, so I am pretty sure this is non legit and part of the virus. my computer also will not connect to most sites where you can download anti spyware / anti virus software, it will not connect to let me download firm ware updates for my current anti spyware, and I can not download anything form microsofts website ( IE8, malicious software tool etc ) , google chrome stays open and lets me stay connected to the net however, but I feel very uncomfortable being on with this virus, I have run the computer in safe mode and ran kaspersky , and malwarebytes but the problem persists, if anyone has any info on how I could possibly combat this virus and fix my PC it would be most appreciated.even in safe mode I can not download, or update my virus software, it says the webpage isnt available. moreTop Anti Pc Software Virus Links
