Open Question: Are the new norton anti virus products from symantec clogging the system less ?

I think it is because I installed Norton Internet Security 2010 on a old Windows XP Desktop that has 1.5 GB of ram and it didn't even slow the computer down. I installed it on my new windows 7 desktop that has 3GB of ram and it worked fine. I think norton has finally found a solution to their system clogging anti virus programs after a dozen of complaints. more

Open Question: Help me with this annoying virus?

I have a virus on my vista business HP laptop. When on google search i get re-directed to sites i don't want. Like 'Ask' and Juggle.com and loads of others. I have run the following anti virus products. Malaware anti malware, avast and i just downloaded STOPzilla and paid for pro version. All programmes detected various viruses and trojans which have all been removed. STOPzilla removed 8 critical trojans and 170 cookies (low risk). But the problem is still there. Occasionally now an error comes up that windows has stopped working with my internet provider (3 Dongle) and kicks me offline. Everything then freezes so i have to reboot my laptop. Still being re-direcred all over the place. Please help it's driving me mad Sue more

Open Question: Help!!! windows 7 activation problem.?

ok so here is the story. baught a asus ul50tv from bestbuy. works great and all but once my trend micro internet security trial ran out is when the problem started. every time i would try to install another freeware antivirus like avg free or avira anti virus it would keep saying conflict in software unistall trend micro. but the program was stubborn and wouldnt unistall. after weeks of trying everything that i could do to unistall it someone suggested that i just use my desktop windows 7 disc to reinstall windows and wipe my laptop. made a image disc just in case things didnt work out. lost it. now im stuck with a laptop that says "windows 7 build 7600 this copy of windows is not genuine" what are my options to undo this and what are the risks of not doing anything? can i just reinstall windows again and activate it cause i read somewhere that there is a certian update that checks your OS . and last question if i call windows will i get introuble and be stuck with this until i save up to buy another copy or will they understand and let me activate my original windows 7 copy that came with the laptop. cause neither the product key on my laptop or the one on my desktop will be accepted by windows activation. more

I'm thinking along the lines of free mmo games but this question can apply to any type of freeware. It doesn't even show how much size it has and when I do try to change/remove it, it says: The feature you are trying to use is on a CD-ROM or other removable disk that is not available. Insert the 'Kaspersky Anti-Virus 2009' disk and click OK. and below that is a like a selection bar, maybe for selecting the disk. On the options there are OK, Cancel, and Browse... When I click Cancel, it says "The installation source for this product is not available. Verify that the source exists and that you can access it... I was on walmart.com and i turned off pop-up blocker to get a better look at a product and this happened I was using my dell, I'm not using my computer right now I have a virus and it was pretending to be a anti virus but i could tell it was fake. So i tried to get to system mechanic professional with antivirus which is legit and it was blocked, so is firefox, and internet explorer. Also it keeps trying to automatically open a dirty website with internet explorer. It acts like i've installed AV Security Suite but i have never even heard of it. Ok, first, someone dled this program, then this fake anti-virus popped up. I used safe mode to delete it completely from my program file/desktop, then it worked. Well, I ended up with a virus on my laptop last night. Now I'm stuck using the main computer and I NEED HELP! Some sort of software called AV Utilities (or something similar) keeps popping up saying that my computer is being attacked! Voting Question: How can I upgrade Windows XP to Windows Vista Basic w/o a disc?

I'm trying to upgrade my brother-in-laws PC from Windows XP to Windows Vista Basic Here's the story, when they bought the PC a 3 yrs back in came with Windows Vista Basic on it. It still has the sticker on the back with the Product Key and all on it. But for some reason, they let a friend of theirs downgrade it to Windows XP - a copy that is NOT Genuine and on the desktop it says "You may be a victim of software counterfeiting" What I want to do it put Windows Vista Basic back on it, using the Product Key on the PC. I do not have a disc for it, and I cannot find a website that will let me download it. They all suggest downloading Windows 7. So my questions are 1) How do I get Windows Vista Basic back on this computer w/o having a disc and remove this "fake" copy of Windows XP and 2) do you know a website that I can go to, to do all of this? Resolved Question: What do I do when a recovery console reboot of my computer caused Microsoft Office to stop working?

Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition Version 2002 Service Pack 3 (according to the disk case) Microsoft Office 2000 Professional Double CD Purchased and installed In-Store After getting a virus, we had to do a "destructive reboot" of our Windows system using HP recovery console. In essence, what it did was delete all our files (which were backed up before we got the virus... don't worry) so the virus went away, but left the programs on our computer intact. Mostly. Big, expensive programs such as Microsoft Office and Norton Anti virus decided they had just been installed and needed a product key. With Norton it was not a huge problem; we had done this once before and all we had to do was ask a chat technician to help us fix it. They uninstalled it and re-installed it, but they could do that because they had a record of our product purchase. The first time this happened with Office, it simply fixed itself after a few days. Microsoft Office does not offer very convenient help. For one thing, the only advice I found on their site for our version of Office was this: "We may not offer free support for your Office Program any more, but if you buy Office 2007 here...." ugh. I need to figure out how to re-activate my Office Suite without buying another product activation key. I considered uninstalling and re-installing, but I have tried to use my product activation key without doing so and it said the key was invalid. I am afraid if I uninstall it it will simply mean the computer will lose record of our purchase and when I re-install the program the key will have already been used once and won't work. Even an email address or other Microsoft contact information that will get me support from them would be helpful. As a last resort we could take it to the place that installed it for us ( a Circuit City) but I think they were closed down last year. I can not tell you how much I will appreciate answers from people who know what they are talking about. I have searched the web for an answer to this problem for most of the day.Unfortunately, there is no phone number on our disk case. In fact there is very little on it except a website and a notation saying there is a holographic image embedded in the genuine disks. Thanks for the answer, though! Long story short.... - My computer is 2 years old, and it started to become really slow about a month ago. - I downloaded RegistryEasy thinking that it would help. I used this product a couple of times each day to speed up my PC (I just found that this is a hoax software) - RegistryEasy messed up my antivirus, so I had to reinstall it. Since I thought it was a virus on my computer causing my antivirus to not work, I downloaded bought and downloaded Kaspersky. After using Kaspersky for a few days, I love it. - Since I just found out that RegistryEasy is actually malware, I downloaded SpyBot, CCleaner, and Malwarebyte's Anti-Malware. I have run each of these software (included Kaspersky) in safe and regular mode. None of these detect anything after I uninstalled RegistryEasy. - My computer is still super slow. I cannot play videos, stream music, run webcam, or have several MS words open without my computer lagging. Why? My thinking is that RegistryEasy messed up my registry and that the only way to solve my issue is to reformat. I have 4 GB of memory, so I know it is plenty of memory to run my "everyday" computing needs. What do you think? Do you have any other suggestions? I assume I could also system restore to a period of about 6 weeks ago. Can I do this? more

I was searching for some info on the web and ended op with Trojan malware. I ran a free scan from CyberDefender but used Malwarebytes Anti Malware to get rid of it. I ran the CyberDefender again just to see what it said. The scan said I was infected with 10 low risk adware/cookies and wanted me to purchase their product to clean it up. Instead I used Spyware Search end Destroy. I ran it and it said all threats were removed but when I ran CyberDefender again it says there are still 6 threats. Recently, my computer has been getting spammed with a prompt to install Yahoo Search Protection. Every time I close it, tho, the first thing it does is throw up the Yahoo web page on my computer. Resolved Question: Civilization 4 Patch = Virus?!?!?

Righto, so recently I attempted to play online with a mate for civilisation 4. Then the game tells me I need a patch, so naturally, assuming it was safe (not sure about the origin of the copy of civ 4, got it from a friend. Came with a disk and a case), I just accepted. As soon as it was complete, the program minimized and another program came up somewhere along the lines of antispysoftware... This program began auto scaning my computer, telling me it was infected and that in order to fix it I had to buy the product. This is clearly a virus and is tearing up my computer... When I attempt to manually open up ANY program a warning box comes up telling me the task.exe is infected, would I like to run antispysoftware now? My option are to either buy the full product, or run the scan which requires me to buy the full product... I currently am using Avira anti virus software. Since downloading this patch my Avira has had it's guard unactive and I am unable to re activate it. My assumption is that the virus has found a way to turn it off and is just being... incredibly inconvenient... *sadface*... Any help on this would be frickin' awesome!! more

I got Kaspersky Antivirus today and it says in the instructions: Uninstall any firewall and other anti-virus products installed on your computer. Well, this computer came with like a three month Norton thing and the three months are up. Well, in the start of each time I turn the computer on, a box pops up saying "Would you like to renew your antivirus?" And I click Remind Me Later and then it goes away. Resolved Question: How to get rid of faulty anti-virus programs?

On my PC, we have our users. Well everyone's users have Internet, except mine! Every time I open my Internet a program called Anti-Virus Soft pops up saying I have to purchase their product in order to 'surf safely' and it scans on it's own and it keeps sending pop up saying so-and-so file is infested, activate your anti-virus software now? And i just want it to go away cuz i don't remember installing it and it's pissing me off. I've looked in my programs and features, but it isn't there so I can't uninstall it! I have AVG and it got rid of everything bad except that so please help! I'm desperate! more

Resolved Question: WTF is wrong with my computer?

Starting yesterday my computer speakers kept playing audio of commercials...just like youtube advertisements but no window is open...i all ready tried uninstalling internet explorer(the web browser i always us) but it didn't work...i checked on my anti-virus and found a bloodhound exploit.292 and i deleted it but the sound kept going...the messages happen randomly and they sound like radio commercials.the most common one is of this product called lime away...i deleted all my temporal internet files but it didn't work...can anyone help me please! Obviously there is a whole debate over Mac or PC and I was just wondering your stance on it!! Make sure to put your defense on why its great!! Im now PC and I have used Macs for about 8 years and same time with PCs so I am pretty unbiased since I have had experience with both! so here is why I love PC (sorry its kind of just a randomly compiled list): PC makers use the newest processors You can customize PCs a TON which you can't do on macs You get to choose whatever software you want and it will run smoothly PCs are good for Graphic Artists (ex. Dreamworks Animation uses them) PCs price is much less inexpensive for a better running product (in my opinion) PCs can also run on OS X(Macs system) because they have the ability to support any options the user wants Users expect that macs are safe from viruses but infact they can bypass the one-program anti-virus system whereas in PCs you can personalize and get whatever anti-virus program you want/need for your computer. Macs are plain looking and conform to one style while PCs have a whole range of looks. Why Im not a fan of Macs: Limited software Expensive software Very overpriced Difficult to upgrade limited to upgrade hard to make comparable with windows or linex more expensive to get repairs done you have to send it out for 2 -4 weeks for repairs The current Mac operating system is equivalent to the running system of Windows 95 just with better graphics Numerous recalls Troubles with deleting your Data (Snow Leopard) Overheating Macbooks OS X- not responding to keyboard some units with 16bit screens, etc. Apple statistics are misleading since Mac users with problem machines are more likely to go out and buy a new computer than PC users Apple is trying to change to different manufactures to make it cheaper which means you can expect even lower quality than in the past Apple had switched the manufacturers producing parts OS X also has problems shutting/slowing down Of course, the spinning wheel of death is very common Macs are standardized with Cameras that run off of the same program on every Mac computer, if your Mac gets hacked, the hacker can turn on your camera with more ease Sorry that was a lot to read!! Resolved Question: FREE quick and easy way to get rid of antispyware soft?

My computer got attacked with anti-spyware soft today. What is the quickest and easiest way to get rid of it? I tried going in safe mode and following this: http://www.2-viruses.com/remove-antispyware-soft. Once I downloaded spyware doctor, it would only scan for threats but wouldn't remove any unless I bought the product. Does anyone know of any free program that will get rid of this? Any input would be greatly appreciated. more
