Open Question: System restore blocked by admin, but really a virus?

so I have been having troubles with my computer, one of those viruses that make pop-ups to try and buy their "anti-spyware" products. I had this once before and got rid of it by ending its actions via task manager then deleting the temporary files and what not. This time I just want to do a system restore to see if it helps. I am in safe mode at the moment(using windows XP). I am not very good with computers so I need some help. So far this virus has diabled my task manager and system restore. I am the only admin on this computer so I am pretty sure its the virus. I cannot click on links via google to find help because the virus also seems to be directing me to other sites. If anybody can tell me the steps through here to... a) Fix the setting on my internet so I can browse through google(I forgot how to do that) I am using internet explorer 7. b)how to enable my task manager c)how to enable my sytem restore d)a really good free anti virus program that I can trust when I download(currently using Avast but its crap and its saying that it doesn't detect anything) I will award you with the best answer yadda yadda. thanks for reading, this computer is ticking me off lots. and sorry I am such a freaking noob at this. lol. more

Open Question: Norton Anti-Virus renewal?

I already have Norton Anti Virus 2009 on my computer but it's expiring next week. I purchased Norton Internet Security 2010. Should I just go into my Norton 2009 and say "renew" and enter my new product key? Or is it better just to delete the entire 2009 then install the 2010? Does it make a difference that one is "Anti-Virus' and the other one will be "Norton Internet Security"? Thanks. more

Open Question: Is Norton safe to use?

I have had a problem with an anti-virus product before, it gave me a whole bunch of viruses, and also installed/downloaded alot of stuff to my computer. So I was wondering if Norton is safe to have on my computer? It came with my new laptop, and my dad said not to activate it, but my friend did, so should I uninstall, then install it again, but not activate it? Or should I just uninstall it?It DID give me a virus it was a fake anti-virus product. Don't tell me that it didn't because it did, I know what I am talking about. Please make sur ethat you actually read the question. Norton didn't give me the virus, the other product did. And I don't want you to "sell" me another one, just answer the question please. more

Open Question: I am having Computer problems?

About a week ago I got a message from scotty dog saying sdra64.exe was trying to connect to the internet, I barred it found it and deleted it, now my computer has started to act up, and a few days ago I started getting this error: ViewMgr has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience. I got a couple blue screens recently, the computer will freeze randomly. A couple of times I've heard random advertisements about products come out of my speakers with no other programs running. It's very bizarre. Also When I google search, it will link to advertisement sites instead of actual searches. And it does this for any search engine on internet explorer or firefox. The anti-virus I use is McAfee Please help. more

Open Question: I'm Utterly Screwed. Help With Virus?

The other day 2 "anti-virus programs" downloaded themselves onto my computer. I knew that they were viruses, and so I ran my AVG. It fixed the issue. However, I recently got some iTunes money and ran a search for The Kingdom to check ratings on the movie when the programs re-downloaded. I went to run AVG again but this time it wouldn't run. It said it was missing components, and nothing was there, however, when I first open it up it shows all of them. Then they disappear. I ran Adaware, and I fixed all the issues it found, but it still doesn't solve my problem. I ran Advanced Windows Care, that didn't solve my problem. To make things worse I can't open up any applications. It insists that even solitaire is infected. I'm using another computer to ask on here, because I can't open up the internet either. Nothing works. My desktop has been replaced with a giant message stating "YOUR SYSTEM IS INFECTED! System has been stopped due to a serious malfunction. Spyware activity has been detected. It is recommeded to use spyware removal tool to prevent data loss. Do not use the computer before all spyware removed". That is the direct quote, all spelling and grammar issues were already there. Also the two "anti-virus programs" were deleted when Adaware caught them as viruses, but it seems there is a 3rd issue that can't be found. Is there anyway I can download a tool without having internet by downloading it on one computer and putting it in the share folder of my other? I tried that with a free version of AVG but it said it didn't recognize my product key or something like that o.O If it does work what program do I need to get? Any help appreciated. I'm also prepared to just completely delete everything on my computer if need be. So yippee for that -_-. more

Resolved Question: Computer virus on other computer; can't access the Internet?

I just got a virus on my other computer and I can't get online (it won't even open to my yahoo home page). Internet explorer shows a "page cannot be displayed" while Firefox refuses to open at all. When I try to open other things on my computer, from YIM to Microsoft Word or anything else, it will say that the file is infected and cannot be opened. I do not a virus blocker but I ran an anti-spy not long before the virus hit. Not sure what caused the virus. But I began getting notifications that my computer was infected and I got an offer to clean the computer (but I did not know the "activation code" and I couldn't "buy the full product" because I could not get into Firefox or online) I don't think I can do anything without Internet access right now... Resolved Question: Windows 7 VAIO Upgrade?

I bought my Sony Vaio laptop in September 2009 and was told I would qualify for a Windows 7 upgrade when it got released. I got sent the upgrade about 3 weeks ago but when I was reading the little booklet they sent, it said that before installing, I had to get rid of my Norton Anti virus or something. It said that there would be a 30 day trial for Norton in the Windows 7 upgrade. The problem is, when I bought my laptop, I also bought a Norton Anti virus subscription for 3 computers in my house (one for our home PC, and then the other 2 for laptops including mine). So if I unistall Norton now and then install Windows 7, will I be able to get my subscription back or is it all gone to waste? Will I lose that or will the product code work again? Also, the same thing goes for Microsoft Products. I bought a Microsoft Word, Excel etc 2007 and it's the same deal - 3 computers and I put it in Sept 2009. Will I lose that too or will the product code work again? Hopefully that made sense lol more

Resolved Question: Which AV is better? Avast, Avira or Microsoft Security Essentials?

I am having a hard time deciding which among these three anti virus programs works better. I had been using Avast for more than a year, Avira for almost a year, and Microsoft Security Essentials for only about a month. I tried all of them and works fine with me. As what I experienced, these are the pros and cons I noticed among them: 1. Avast 4.8 Professional Avast is faster to load in windows start-up and I don't experience any PC slow down. It updates its definition faster among the three and includes a boot time scanning feature which the other two didn't have. It has the most number of files scanned than the other two but it takes time. Sometimes, it detects a virus but it can't process (neither move to chest, or move/rename action can't take effect but only delete). 2. Avira Premium Security Suite 9.0 Avira is faster and has better detection rate. It has it's own firewall (for premium security suite only) which works better than the Windows Firewall. When I plug-in a usb with virus, it warns me quickly without exploring the usb device. Or before a website (that includes malware) fully loads, it warns me quick and blocks the entire webpage. But I noticed, it has many false detections. It has faster scanning than Avast then followed by MSE. But it makes my computer boot slow. It takes about 30 seconds to 2 minutes before it finishes to start-up. 3. Microsoft Security Essentials MSE is free as long as your windows OS is genuine. I've read a thesis which was conducted summer of 2009. In the results page, MSE is rated 3/3 stars (excellent) when it comes to effective detection and full removal of viruses/malware. While the other 2 is rated 2/3 stars (average), which is also good but having issues when it comes to full removal of viruses/malware. I don't have much experience using this product but they say it is good. I am using Windows Vista Ultimate SP2. What do you think is much better? I am thinking if I get Avira, it detects faster but makes my computer slow whilst Avast, it is light weight in memory but it isn't that good detection like Avira which is fast. MSE? I don't know yet. The above statement for MSE is from a conducted thesis I found in the internet. Share your viewpoints! :Dthis is the link to the AV conducted thesis: http://www.av-comparatives.org/images/stories/test/removal/avc_removal_2009.pdf more

Always trust your instincts on the web, if anything be over cautious with sites like this The Whois (site owner look up) is also inconclusive so don't use the site (to check just go to a search engine type "who is" and then enter the domain (url) into the webpage. Voting Question: Problems with my Dell Inspiron 1521 laptop. How can I make it faster?

I have a Dell Inspiron 1521 Laptop running Windows Vista, and it has a bunch of consistent problems. Internet Exlporer 8 is the web browser I have installed on here, and whenever I use it the program will work for awhile but if I open additional tabs it will start to spaz very quickly and stop responding causing the screen to turn white for IE forcing me to close the program and restart it. This has really really become a pain and I wish it would fix. I was just trying to write this thread with only iTunes, task manager, and IE with only this page up and my computer was running at 70% CPU Usage and If I would have opened another tab it probably would have risen to 80-90 or even 100% and froze, unfortunately the whole computer froze randomly and caused me to reboot. Currently I have the same 3 things open after just rebooting and its running at 20-30% usage. I do not really have any junk programs on the computer, I did have Norton Anti-Virus installed on the computer until last night, seeing how Norton is such a reosurce hog I uninstalled it and am currently using AVG Anti-Virus Free for right now as I have heard it is a great product that doesnt use to much space. The switch seemed to improve the computers capability and speed at first, but then the problems came back, its not as bad, but it is still bad. I don't really know if the switch helped at all but it seems it. The computer always takes a long time to boot up as well, but after removing norton it seems to boot up a little faster, but the bootup process is still very long. I am always on IE and I do not wish to have this problem anymore its just annoying and repetitive. The CPU. Also my computer gets very hot when I use it, and has overheated and shutoff a couple times already, but it usually just gets extremely hot, and when that happens the computer seems to have these problems even more. Also the battery lasts for about 15 minutes, I have to have it plugged it whenever on it otherwise it will die quickly, and sometimes when it is plugged in it runs slow but if i unplug it the computer speeds up and works fine. These problems are on and off but if its not one problem one of the others is always occuring in place of that one, Also my harddrive is not packed with files I have 99.7GB free out of 162GB of my OS Can someone please help me fix these problems please. more

Resolved Question: Anti-Virus for a gamer?

Hey guys. I have been having a lot of computer trouble lately. I've been doing tons of disk cleanups and defrags, and I'm kind of skeptical about the Anti-Virus I'm using. Currently, I use Norton Anti-Virus 2009. I have heard tons of bad things about how Norton doesn't pick up on any viruses, and I'm beginning to think that's true, but I have used Norton ever since I started having computers as a child, so I'm not familiar with anything else at all. I also have a copy of Norton 360 from 2007, but I'm not really sure which Norton product to use if I stay with Norton. I've had friends tell me about AVG, and AdAware, but I'm really concerned with my computer security, and I am also a gamer, so I worry about my gaming security aswell. So my questions are: 1. If I stay with Norton, should I use the 360 version or the Anti-Virus version? 2. Do you guys have any suggestions for the safest anti-virus (free or to pay for) that I can get right now that can protect my computer and my gaming accounts and still let my computer run smoothly? Thanks so much for the help! xoxo more

Resolved Question: Anti virus, worm, trojan pop ups are they for real?

Ok once in a great while some thing pops up and says I have a virus and trojan or worm or all or one of those things. It says to download something in order to rid my computer of these threats or threat. Are they legit? Do I really have like over 500 viruses and crap on my computer or is it just some sort of advertising scam that plays on people's fears? Oh and I do have AVG anti virus and Adware and Spybot. But the main thing is...are they really showing what is on my computer or is it just something to get people to use their products? more

Resolved Question: Whats to say that the computer and/or anti-virus companies aren't creating products designed to be hacked?

Ok so I am no conspiracy theroist, and I never drink the cool-aid when it comes to ignorant statements. I am simply saying, how do we know that the computer products that we buy aren't designed to eventually fail us some day? Whats to say that the people who build anti-virus software aren't the ones spreading it around as well? If all computers didn't fail or break or someday get a virus, these companies would NOT be profitable. They rely on these types of circumstances to take place so that they can constantly be pumping out products. Does anyone have any insight into this? more

Resolved Question: What exactly happens after I report my credit card statement for fraud?

After viewing my credit card statement for this month, I noticed several online transactions that I have not made online. I've reported this to my credit card company as fraud. They cancelled my card and send me a new one. I am wondering what will happen now? Who is going to lose money due to the fraud transactions that was made? The credit card company or the merchant? The bank said I won't be liable more than $50. Also will they find the person who did this and prosecute him/her? They would have to trace his/her IP address that was used to order these online as none of the transactions include shipping address.
