Open Question: Could i get an internet protection software cd if my laptop is already infected with a virus?

My laptop was infected by a virus and now, I cant get on the internet. The signal is strong for my wi-fi network connection, but I cant get on the internet. I am assuming its because of the virus. I got an anti virus software cd to hopefully protect it from anymore viruses, but I still cant get on the internet. If i bought an internet protection cd ( like norton or avg )....would i get my internet working again, or would i have to settle this at a best buy store? I have already spent hella money for this and nothings getting better. Also, the icon on the bottom right corner looks the same as if i did have my internet working ( earth globe in between computers)....but when i diagnose why i cant get on the internet......it says : " verify the current proxy server configuration" . Im pretty much stuck at this part and dont want to mess it up even more as it is. IDK bout a freakin proxy stuff. more

Voting Question: How safe are Mac computers on the internet?

I have used my iMac on the internet for some time without any ant-virus software, because I was told that viruses target Windows machines rather than Mac machines and that Macs don't need virus protection. Is this true? Would anti-virus software work with a Mac? Are any of the free antivirus downloads any good? Any other advice which could protect my machine would be very useful. more

Resolved Question: How to remove Antimalware Doctor?

Right so, my 2nd computer has suffer many blows with no/little virus protection, but this one is stumping me. I've looked up some software to kill it, Malware Antimalware Bites and Spyware Doctor. These were both installed on the infected computer BUT each time i go to open the program(s) the Anti Malware Doctor stops it from opening and attacking the virus. I can't find the program on TASKMNGR or in my program files to delete anything. Are these hidden? How can I find the files because something is obviously installed. Resolved Question: What is the best all in one software for computer protection in 2010 (That's affordable)?

My Norton 360 subscription just ran out and I wanted to know what I should get next. It would be easier if I could find a software that included everything instead of me having to buy everything separate. What I need most is a great anti-spyware and anti-virus protection. Any suggestions? more

Resolved Question: How to get rid of B.exe trojan?

Hi, recently my Comodo Firewall protection detected a process called b.exe and moved it into the sandbox, I had no idea what it was so I left comodo to deal with it in the sandbox. That was a few weeks ago. A few days ago the same b.exe tried to start up again and again comodo moved it to the sandbox, but now it will keep bringing up the same thing every hour or so so as in b.exe will try to start and comodo will try to move it to the sandbox. Only for the same process to repeat again. I did a search for b.exe on google and read up on it being a trojan that plays random sounds at random times, and attacks your anti malware software. I have not had anything that extreme yet but am extremely concerned that it may start to get that bad and the constant pop up from comodo is annoying in itself when browsing the web. I have searched for it in pretty much every file on my laptop but it is either really well hidden or called something else. It does not show up in my process list on task manager so I am confused at where the hell it keeps coming from! I have tried doing a scan with super anti spyware which does not find anything.A real time and boot time scan with my avast free edition anti virus software turned up nothing. Malwarebytes scan also turned up nothing. I have looked all over the internet for a way to remove this annoying trojan but there are so many different tools recommended to download and use that I do not know which to trust and which to not. Is there a way to remove this without downloading yet more anti spyware and malware protection? and if not which ones will actually get rid of b.exe and not just clutter up my system. Thanks in advance more

Voting Question: Please help, how do I remove fake anti-virus software!?

I don't know what happend. All of a sudden I was bombarded by all these fake warnings telling me to buy their programs. It is blocking anything I can use to get rid of it (notepad, windows security, AVG) I supposedly have - Antivir solution pro - Antimalware Doctor Protection Center - Antimalware Doctor And they keep bringing up Viagra and porn sites on IE. I use firefox and I'm running Vista. Please help!!@AnnaL, Doesn't work that way. It snuck its way into my computer somewhere and I can't access my notepad program to put the code in to uninstall it. more

Resolved Question: Is it possible for someone to get a computer virus from a legitimate?

website when they have anti-virus protection? I know for instance, my anti-virus software will tell me if the site is dangerous before I even click on it. Recently, a few people have claimed they received a virus from a large, well-known website( a couple said they clicked on some 'pop-up' ads), what I don't understand is how do you get a virus, where does it come from, etc. I've never been of the mind, or worried that much that I would get a virus on a known safe website. Maybe I'm naive, but so be it....and help me please. TIA! & ~~God bless!~~Alan, yes I know that; that's why I'm wondering if these people who said they got a virus from this website told a little fib when they said they did in fact have virus protection when I asked them. That's what I meant, see. more

Voting Question: What is the Best FREE Anti Virus and Trogan detection and removal program?

Under my Windows vista 'Malware protection' Window: Windows Defender is still working on my Vista Windows. However, this yellow Exclamation point shows up at the bottom of my screen to tell me : 'CyberDefender Interent Security is on but is reporting its status to the Windows Security Center in a format that is no longer supported. Use the programs automatic updating feature, or contact the program manufacturer for an updated version'? When I hit my 'Daily' Tab at around noon today from my WordPad Start page / windows Explorer app, it lists all this spyware and trojans hijacker software that hit my computer today at noon! When I try to delete the history, it says it is no longer available. So where is it? Hidden somewhere in my computer? I periodically use the Norman Malware Cleaner located at http://www.norman.com/support/support_tools/58732/en-us It was recommended by Microsoft when they removed a worm twice when my computer was under warranty. What does 'Private Browser' In IE Do? I use it all the time...in Vain? Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated. Thx. more

Resolved Question: Is it okay to have two different Anti-Virus software at the same time?

I have a windows vista desktop and norton 360, as of now. I have been told several times that it is not nearly worth the price and other anti-virus such as Avira and Avast. However, the subscription still has a little time left. I want to download Avast home edition, for i hear that Norton 360 does not catch as many viruses as Avast. Should i download Avast with Norton still active or should i remove norton? I am not a computer expert so i have no idea if having multiple virus protection software makes them conflict with each other. Thanks so much everyone. Honestly before i asked this i was just going to download avast with norton still present. Thank god i asked this. more

Resolved Question: Help!! Really bad internet virus!!?

My mother-in-law's computer got infected by this stupid thing called AV Security Suite and it took the whole internet over. I tried going to the Geek Police website and it said how to remove this particular virus, problem is, when I got to the last step of removal, it wouldn't let us click "Apply," to turn off the setting that would allow us to use the internet to get an anti-virus thing. When we get onto the internet, the home page says "Visiting this website may harm your computer. Use virus scan now." So then I tried putting my AVG virus-scanner onto the removable disk, and I think the virus is messing with that too. But whatever we click on, a pop-up comes up saying "Application has been infected." The only thing we did do was disconnect the internet from her computer so that we wouldn't wake up today with seven hundred porn site pop-ups or websites about erectile dysfunction. That worked at least. Anyway, we're at our wit's end, my mother-in-law is going to buy an anti-virus software called McAfee Internet Protection 2010. My question is, will this work to battle this dumb virus or is she going to end up wasting her money? And is there anything else I can try to get rid of this virus? Thanks in advance. My computer genius husband is away at boot camp and my mother-in-law and I don't really know that much about how to take care of computer issues, it's really the blind leading the blind here. So any help at all, any suggestions, would be greatly appreciated. more

Resolved Question: is symantec antivirus good enough or will i need more?

i went to a website called "Ziddu.com" and the internet froze and all applications stopped working, then a virus protection that i did not even have installed came up and said i had some viruses and they will remove them for $50. thing is i already had a virus protection installed called symantec anti-virus and i scanned the whole computer and 2 viruses came up called "trojan.fakeav" then it multiplied and became 4. symantec said if i restart it will clean out the viruses. and when i did a full scan again it said there was no viruses. then after that i played counter-strike 1.6 and there were a lot of duplicate servers, and when i clicked one of them symantec said it found a "backdoor.trojan" so i cleaned it and then it removed the risks after cleaned. 2 days later my computer was working fine and then when i turned the screen off and came back to the computer 2 hours later it said it found another virus called "backdoor.trojan". and now today i did another full scan and left the computer alone and it said it found another "backdoor.trojan". someone lead me to a virus protection software that will protect me from viruses and spyware. if you guys know one that is free and works good, let me know. and if none of the free virus protections are any good someone lead me to a good virus/spyware protection that costs money. but let me know of the free one first. more

Voting Question: Which one is better an Apple Mac or a PC?

For high school i am required to get a laptop. Here are the specifications: •13" Screen •1024x768 resolution •Intel Core2 Duo 1.73 GHz (or equivalent, eg. AMD product) •1 GB Memory •120 GB Hard Drive •Wireless Network Adapter (802.11 b/g/n) •Optical drive (DVD±R DL / DVD±RW / CD-RW) •Microsoft Windows XP/Vista/7 as well as it needs to last 7 hours or I need to get an extra battery. So, with the requirments of the computer I also need to get anti virus protection and Microsoft Office. But the school also says that if I get a Mac that I would not have to buy software. Between a Mac and PC, which one would be a better buy? By better I mean efficent, cost, warrenty and so on. more

Voting Question: Why does Windows Security Center have Virus protection Not Found?

Why does Windows Security Center have 'Virus protection Not Found' even though I have AVG Anti-Virus 9.0 installed? Also, can you have two or more Anti-Virus programs installed at the same time to help protect comp more bec AVG did find some threats at first when I scanned the comp, but now it hardly finds any threats. If not, why? Is there any software that can completely take care of everything, ie. ,Virus', Malware, Spyware, Trojans, Worms, Blaster, Sasser, Mydoom. etc. that is good & will really work? Also, how do I know if anybody is accessing my internet link, "piggy backing", & how can I prevent that from happening. I put a password on the internet options, but I really dont know if that is working or if there is some other way to block the access. I know when my nephew gave me this 2002 laptop, it came with a Linksys card & when I tried to get online, other users had a password that I didn't know & I couldn't get internet access. But then at the same time I didn't really know how accessing the internet wirelessly worked, but now I do. So now that I have this Cricket modem I want to do the same so I don't have anybody accessing my internet & doing anything malicious. Any suggestions & help, would be appreciated, thx. more

Resolved Question: McAfee Security Centre/BT Net Protect?

i used to use AVG free, great protection but a big drain on my laptop's resources so i switched to McAfee's Security Centre free with the BT Netprotect plan i get with my broadband subscription. I do regular maintenance on my system, registry fixes, clean-ups, spyware removers and a full anti-virus scan to finish it off. I usually do my scans in windows "safe mode" so it's easier to find an infection, BUT when i scanned today, when the scan hit 100% it restarted my laptop, the check-box to turn off computer when scans finished WASN'T checked, i thought this was a bit strange, scanned again in normal boot-up windowsXP, scan hit just over 50% and laptop shutdown again! Does it sound like an infection? Should i go back to AVG, is there any other anti virus software that is compatible with McAfee stuff as i understand, rival anti-virus software's don't like sharing a system with each other... Is McAfee good? Go back to AVG? I don't wanna have to pay a yearly fee to keep my anti-virus up to date, so yeah, it's gonna have to be a free one? Cheers more

Resolved Question: Who is really behind all these criminally orchestrated computer viruses that are ruining the Internet?

Seems like every time I go online can't help but run into one of these most irritating Trojan attacks..Now we all know that Windows a byproduct of the Microsoft Corp. has a weak firewall that offers little protection or none at all. It's a fact that Microsoft has really cleaned up with all this anti-virus software over the years...somehow I get the feeling they are creating these viruses to sell us their own virus protection for the viruses their hackers first created? talk about a vicious circle what your thoughts!... more

Resolved Question: Virus Protection Help?

I recently came under attack by a computer virus, that fragged my hard drive, disabled all my anti virus software, installed fake anti virus software titled AV Security Suites, and took over windows help center. I have a 2006 vista, and had to call someone to come fix it, which they did and removed all the problems with the computer. My main question is that Ive been using the free version of AVG 9.0 for protection and it has worked until this thing came and well did its job. If i upgraded to the complete version of AVG would the fire wall, and everything that it includes be able to stop this thing before it hits, if it hits again, or a similar virus attacks? If not what should i change my anti-virus too? more

Resolved Question: What is a guaranteed safe / virus-free website that I can use to download addons for World of Warcraft?

I've recently reactivated my WoW account after a five-month "voluntary" break, and am interested in getting addons. However, fears derived from my experience with a website that offers addons interferes with my ability to acquire them. About five months ago, I went to curse.com - a website which I had heard great things about concerning addons from several sources (all of which I trusted and still do trust) - and downloaded the Curse Client, as well as the addon Recount. I found this addon to be majorly helpful, but several hours after downloading it I received a message on my computer saying (paraphrasing) "DANGER! YOUR COMPUTER IS INFECTED!" CLICK HERE TO SOLVE THE PROBLEM!" In all my years of experience with computers, I've never had this happen, so my natural reaction was to panic. My father (who has a degree in Information Technology, thankfully) was able to solve the problem and told me that my computer in fact did not acquire a virus, but would have had I done anything to "fix" the problem. I'd like to be able to find an addon website that is free of viruses (and the potential for viruses), so are there any suggestions? And, if curse.com and the Curse Client are in fact safe to use, what can be done to prevent this in the future? Important information: 1) My computer has anti-virus software, anti-spyware software, a personal firewall, and anti-spam. It had all of these protections in place five months ago, from a trusted website (these were installed personally by my father, who I trust with my computer more than I trust myself with it). 2) The website I went to was definitely www.curse.com and not a malicious website of similar name. 3) I've never encountered anybody personally who has had this issue with curse.com. 4) I did not run a scan prior to or following the Recount download (though I should not have had to). 5) I downloaded Recount successfully through the Curse Client, and both the addon and the Curse Client are still on my computer (though I have neither touched nor updated the Curse Client since the incident five months ago). more

Resolved Question: Anti-Virus protection that's free?

I just had a call from a company that told me I had a virus, and told me to go onto this specific website to get a free scan by them. When I went on the website under the instruction of the guy on the other end of the phone (who was really patronising) he told me to click on Run to the scanning process, he then became frustrated that I was asking questions about the company that made me think that it was a scam, so I put the phone down. Scared for my computer and my personal details, I wish to download an anti-virus software, and firewall precautions to protect my computer. more

Resolved Question: i installed a tango toolbar by mistake which apparently is a spyware/ malware. how to remove it?

when i tried uninstalling it through control panel i got this message Hello, If you were sent to this page then it is likely that you have downloaded some sort of adware or malware. We have recently begun to receive reports from individuals who have installed a toolbar that includes the name ‘tango’ and tells them to go to here to remove it. Our company, Brand Tango, has no association with this software and we do not create any software for individual use. The reported toolbar is attempting to mislead people by sending them to a domain that they don’t own and that can’t help them. We recommend that you ensure your internet security software (anti-virus, firewall, malware/adware protection, etc…) is up to date and then contact their technical support for help removing the toolbar. For your convenience, links to some of the more popular internet security companies are listed below. Sincerely, Brand Tango http://usa.kaspersky.com/ http://www.symantec.com/norton/index.jsp http://www.mcafee.com/us/default.asp . please tell me how to remove it. thanks more

Resolved Question: What security software should I run in addition to anti-virus?

I'm cleaning up all my computers, reformatting and reinstalling, and would like to optimize protection at that point to prevent any kind of viruses, malware, spyware, etc from infecting my computer. I will be running Sophos Anti-Virus, software provided by the graduate program I am beginning, but wonder if I should run anything else as well. Back in my college days the friends I trusted to be intelligent/competent/common-sensical suggested running Ad-Aware too, but I have no idea if that is still ideal or not? 1.) Is Sophos Anti-Virus good software? I have no experience with it, and am having trouble finding recent reviews. Does anyone know anything about it? 2.) What other programs (prefer free, but would consider inexpensive options) should I have running in order to keep my computer running well? Resolved Question: ASUS Eee PC virus question?

I just bought my ASUS Eee PC Saturday and picked it up Sunday after it had all the virus protection and updates installed. Last night (Monday) I powered up and the computer told me that there was an update available. It popped up from the bottom right, like all updates do, and it had the ASUS logo. It looked totally legit. I clicked yes to install updates and it acted like a normal update. It told me when it was finished that it needed to reboot for updates to take effect, like all updates do, so I clicked yes. Now I have a totally useless piece of plastic that needs to go back to Best Buy. The lovely Geek Squad people charged me fifty dollars for Kerspesky anti-virus software and told me it was the best there is. My question is: Could this have been a legit update that had a virus hidden in it? Is there anything I can do besides letting Geek Squad charge me another 200 bucks to fix it? I am sooooooo mad!How do I go back to a restore point? The machine will not go past a black screen with white writing that basically tells me in poor grammar that I lost my system. more

Resolved Question: Virus problem redirecting my firefox and slows my net connection please help.?

Whenever I do a search on my firefox it will sometimes redirect me to different websites like shopping websites or ones that AVG flags and closes. I had run all of my anti virus programs and nothing is picking it up. * Hitman pro 3.5, AVG, Spybot S&D and Maleware bytes. I also ran a Hijack This and saved its log to paste bellow. Resolved Question: I have Avast, Threatfire, Superanti-spyware, & Malwarebytes is this good?

Hey guys, the reason why I'm asking is because 1 week ago my computer caught a virus that didn't let me get onto the internet, I had to ask my friend who is an IT to fix it for me, and he did it for free and he said he had found 71 viruses on my computer and he completely fixed the problem. Managing to save everything on my pc. However, I'm thinking the reason this happened was because I was without an AV protection system on my laptop for like 3 months. I used to have Avast, and somehow I deleted it because I was annoyed at the updates it made everyday. Now I know it is important to have an AV on your computer. However, I never got rid of Super-Anti Spyware OR Malwarebytes. When I caught the virus I ran both of these programs and they didn't detect a single thing. For my friend to say that I had 71 viruses freaked me out... why didnt these programs detect anything? I can understand that they missed some, but all of them?? When he gave me my laptop back he recommended AVG (a free AV too) and said he had never heard of aveira or avast. I heard that Avast was better than AVG so I downloaded it again, paired it with Threatfire, but am now wondering if I should actually pay for a better quality Anti-Virus software. I cant remember what he used, but that's what he does for a living he fixes computers and what not. So he didnt have a hard time doing it. I just dont want to have to bug him with this problem anymore... sorry was long. I just wanted to explain my situation in detail. If you guys think what I have should be good, then I guess I'll stick to it. But if it does nothing then I'd rather delete this stuff and pay good money for something that will keep my laptop running. So is the combination of Avast, Threatfire, Super-anti-Spyware & Malwarebytes any good? Resolved Question: I have a Windows XP question?

Please read: I currently have windows Vista on my my Dell computer. Well, the hot topic nowadays seems to be that Vista is really bad software and pretty much just a virus-magnet. However, I do not have any anti-virus protection on my computer right now, and because of that fact I probably have numerous technological problems on my computer (possibly viruses) that I probably could have solved with the purchase/download of Avast or Norton (*********sometimes, when I open a new tab while I'm online, an infinite amount of additional tabs begin to manifest themselves at an incredibly fast speed**********) My 2 Questions: --> (*****my initial question's namesake******) Should I accept my brother's advice and just "downgrade" to XP with his installation disc so that I can decrease my chance of having my computer crash? I hear that XP is the most efficient of the Windows series and is a whole lot better than Vista. -->My brother says that Norton stinks and that Avast offers the best PC protection out there. True? more

Resolved Question: Anti-virus/internet security for netbooks?

Do netbooks need anti-virus software that is specifically made for netbooks? McAfee has anti-virus for netbooks and Norton has internet security for netbooks. Should I use either of those, a different brand, or the same one I use on my desktop computer (McAfee Total Protection)? more

Resolved Question: How do I get rid of a wuauclt.exe and a hpqgpc01.exe virus?

I have a really bad virus and no virus protection. When I turn the computer, everything seems normal. Then I get a pop up that says " Application cannot be executed. The file hpqgpc01.exe is infected. Do you want to activate your anti virus software now?" I also have another file that is infected called wuauclt.exe. I am unable to connect to the internet at all. When I try to restore the computer, the pop up keeps happening to prevent me from doing it. The pop up is continuous. How in the world do I take this off the computer (preferably without spending a bunch of money) THanks for any help ahead of time!I tried to delete the wuauclt.exe file from the System32 folder but was told I did not have the permission necessary to move it or delete it.the safe mode options are: safe mode, safe mode with networking, safe mode with command prompt, enable boot logging, enabling low res video, last known good configuration (advanced), directory services restore mode, debugging mode. And the safe mode with networkin still isn't letting me connect to the internet... more

Resolved Question: I need help with getting rid of my computer virus.?

This virus is on my laptop, a HP Pavilion dv6700. The virus won't allow me to get on any internet browser, but I am still connected to the internet. Occasionally a porn or erectile dysfunction site will pop up. It also keeps popping up with virus warnings trying to sell virus protection, that pop right back up every time you hit cancel or no. I have Kaspersky Anti-Virus 2010 and it seems the virus is messing with it as well, Kaspersky acknowledges that there is a virus on the computer, but it blocks any action Kaspersky tries to do. The pop-up that keeps coming up is either "Security Warning: Application cannot be executed. The file hphc_service.exe is infected. Do you want to activate your antivirus software now?" and "Antivirus software alert: Infiltration alert, Your computer is being attacked by an internet virus. Details Attack from 120.128.69.185, port 42820 Threat: BankerFox.A...." I did find a file and folder under, Computer > Local Disk (C:) > Users > User Name > AppData > Local > the file is labeled asam the folder is named eabqrjklg and inside is a file named tftgfdttssd the folder and files were created at the exact time the virus hit and every time I've tried deleting them manually it won't allow it saying I do not have permission to delete it. Please help if you can I've tried a lot and nothing is working at all on my laptop. I'd like to try and save a couple hundred if I can by not taking it to geek squad or something more

Resolved Question: What about iobit security 360 free not upgrade, any good, I never knew it was there for free malware scanner?

like superantispyware or malwarebytes anti-malware real time scan for free and nobody reccomends things that are free I mean can't find pages for security that list all there is like for real time that is free all want money makers like virus scanners but i think free ones are best cos they are leightweight and maybe offer less security over heavy but choice is light over heavy even with risks there are but I never get too bad my comp clean all the time only somehow sometimes something gets through but thats really rare, and i was using avast before till it broke i mean didnt stop one fake virus software from attack out of ie page so i decided it's no good avast and migrated to avira antivir which is fast and now got ahead heuristicks protection and other for free and iobit real time malware protection using free but avira catches things and iobit360 does not catch anything so i suppose that free version it so poor only get real catching adter paying that is something to consider, and those softwares like trend micro slows internet two time so i stick with fast ones which avira antivir is even if you buy it it's not gonna improve catching more
