Avg Anti Virus Program Questions asked

Open Question: Virus messed up pc. please help?

Ok, so earlier i was just surfing youtube, and i get a popup ( not on the internet ) saying that my computer is infected and a virus scan program poped up and started scanning. So i first try to pull up taskmanager, and almost instantly it says taskmngr.exe is infected, would you like to find a solution? At that point the only thing i could do was to power down. i hold down the power button, for 10-15 secs. nothing, so i unplug my pc. Now, when i try to run internet explorer, it says windows cannot display this webpage. I'm pretty good with computers, for a 14 year old of course, and have never had problems removing malware, and spyware when i encounter them. But this one is bad. so i had to get on my laptop to ask this. Please help me fix this virus. Im running AVG Free 9.0 and Malwarebytes anti malware on my pc. also, along with my virus problem, what are some other programs i can run that will help me be safe. everyone says the avg is bad. HELP!!!!!!!!!!! more

Open Question: Why do programs run in the background?

Hi, I'm not too bad at computers, and so I know about programs that run in the background use memory and CPU up, and thus slow the computer down. I have removed 23(!) startup programs - excluding Microsoft programs - I don't need running so my computer works superfast. Is there any reason why programs that I download or are already uploaded on my computer? Like QuickTime, RealPlayer, Adobe Acrobat, iTunes, or the various Dell Computer programs. Do they have real, tangible reasons to be running? I removed them from startup, using msconfig.exe, and the only real difference is that my computer runs faster, the programs like iTunes or Adobe Acrobat run just as fast. (Additionally, it's easier to discover illegitimate programs if there is few programs running) Though I've noticed that iTunes had a hissy fit at me over not having Bonjour.exe running! Haha! I just don't get the usefulness of them. p.s. I would never remove a program without googling it first to discover whether my computer won't turn on the next time! I never get rid of any microsoft program as a result. p.s.s. Before you ask, I do use AVG anti-virus software always, and Malwarebyte, SpyBot, CCCleaner, HijackThis, and occasionally run Avanti - just to be sure! A little paranoid I know, but nothing is worse than the computer going spare! more

Resolved Question: How do I delete my virus?

Hi, I really need help with my computer. I recently got a virus infected on my computer. Every time I try to open something, anything, it says the program is infected and it cannot open it. Open Question: Blue Start bar wont show/load upon boot of Windows XP computer.?

When I boot my computer that has Windows XP Pro, everything loads fine except the Norton Anti-virus and the blue start bar at the bottom. The Desktop icons and background are fine too. Internet Explorer wont load, FireFox still works but is very slow to get going. Also the Norton toolbar i have installed just shows a gray circle with a question mark in it. Another problem is that I cant open picture files by double clicking them. I have to right click and tell it what program to use to open the picture. I go to (Open with>Choose program...) and check the box to "Always use the selected program to open this kind of file" after selecting the Picture and fax Viewer, it opens the picture file but to open another one or the same after I exit it, I have to go through the same process. >replaced the explorer.exe with one from another good working pc, but it didn't help... >plugged hard drive into another pc and scanned with AVG Free, and found 4 infected files so I moved them to the vault. How can I bring the task bar back, fix the picture problem, and get Norton 360 up and running again? No I didnt have them both. Norton was on the computer that got infected and AVG was in the second computer I put the drive into and scanned it on. I know norton sucks, but its not my computer.... Is kaspersky any good? Ive been using just that on my personal computer for a little more than a year now and havent ever had any problems.. more

Resolved Question: Best Antivirus Programs?

Alright, I don't want people trying to tell me to download some free crap just for the sake of it being free. In my past experience, you get what you pay for with free...nothing. I've used both AVG and Avast, both of which have been terrible. Currently I'm using Microsoft Security Essentials with Malwarebytes, and I'm not particularly impressed by it either. I don't mind dishing out some money for a good anti virus I can rely on. So, in your opinion what is the best out there? I use my computer for online classes, a little bit of social networking and photo sharing (like facebook and deviantart), and over all random web surfing if this information helps any. more

Resolved Question: Kaspersky IS 2011, ESET Smart Security 4 or Norton 360 4.0?

I've got all of those programs already, I just don't know which one to use. I tested every of them and it seems for me that, all 3 anti-viruses are awesome. What do you recommend? P.S. Please don't answer to use other anti-virus and I mean specifically on Avira, Avast, AVG, Bit-Defender etc. cause I know they really suck!). I know others are not better at all and can't compare with these 3 anti-viruses.Well, yea, but Norton has Pulse updates every 5-15 minutes which can't compare to Kaspersky hourly updates... It's so hard to choose :/ more

Resolved Question: How to fix my infected computer?

My computer just got infected hardcore ( im on my parents right now asking this ). All of the sudden my original anti-virus program came up then this weird one that i know is the virus called antivir pro. The one I use originally is avg. This pop up from antivir keeps saying that the file googlesetup is infected and pops up every time i go to control panel and try fixing it, it desn't let anything else come up. all of this stupid antivir stuff keeps popping up and isn't letting me open any file on my compter. I have a guest account that I went to and it was working just fine and not infected but the internet doesn't work on it.what I was going to do was go to the control panel on my original account and make the guest account admin, then go to my guest account and delete the original account. by the way, I unplugged the internet a couple of minutes ago after I checked to see if it worked on the guest account. What do I do!?!? Im stuck!!also, it keeps trying to take me to porno websites and the viagra website.specifically porno . com more

Resolved Question: What is the best Antivirus to use?

So I've been using AVG for two years now and it has done it's job well. So i was wondering what anti virus programs would you recommend? Preferably one that can let me install it onto two computers. If it helps I have a gateway desktop running XP and a laptop running on Vista. I download music quite often and rarely download from torrents. Oh and please don't tell me to go with a "free anti virus". I found trojan horses on my friends flash drives who were running free anti viruses. After i discovered the trojan horses, they checked their computers and sure enough their computers were infected. The free programs they were using did not detect the infection and did not even try to block it. Every time i scan their flash drives I find more malware even after i've cleaned it out days before. Like i said before, i've been using AVG and my computers are clean. Why would i want to risk using something thats free and does not give me the same quality of protection? more

Resolved Question: My computer has "Rogue scanner 1514." Someone help me get rid of it.?

On my other computer, I signed into pop-ups about being infected by viruses. After messing around with that, AVG popped up saying I have "rogue scanner 1514" and other such things as trojan horses. A very obvious adware/malware "anti-virus" program pops up as well and I get messages every couple seconds saying all my computer actions are terminated due to this infection. Basically, this is all leaving me to my homepage with this fake anti-virus program popping up and internet explorer occasionally opening up by itself to "Viagra.com" and "Porno.org" among other sites. The internet, itself, isn't working save for those two sites. Please help me get rid of this! But you can't download stuff in safe mode. I have the other computer currently in safe mode and you can't do much there. How would I download Malwarebytes on safe mode with networking? more

Resolved Question: AntiVir Virus help? (PLEASE HELP ME!)?

So last night, I got this virus called "AntiVir." It says that its an anti-virus software, but it's not. It won't let me open up internet explorer, and whenever I do open it, it says "Pay for AntiVir." It also won't let me run programs or anything. I've had a virus similar to this one, but it was a lot easier to remove. All I had to do was download AVG and it deleted its files. This time though, I can't even run the internet. So I made a new user on my computer, and it seems to be a quick fix to the problem. So I am planning to delete the user with the virus on it. I got all my pictures and important documents off the user already, and I put them on this user. (I scanned the files with AVG before I put them on my computer.) The problem is though, my computer says I can keep my files still from that user (Only my favorites, videos, music, pictures, documents, and desktop icons) I don't know if I should keep them or not though. The only reason I want to keep them is because I have over 2000 songs and the only way for me to keep them and not have to go through the tedius process of burning all my CDs to my computer. Should I keep the files, or just delete them? more

Voting Question: Someone please help my fix my computer!?

I had a virus that put a fake anti-virus software on my computer. I got rid of the virus, but certain settings on my computer are changed and I cant change them back: 1: Every time I try to run an program, a box comes up asking me what program I want to open it with. 2: When in control panel, I get this error: c:\windows\system32\rundll32.exe application cannot be found. 3: When I try to run rosetta stone off of my d drive it tells me "Operating system has denied access to specified file." 4: I have tried to put avira, avg and avast on my pc and none of them will finish installing. Can someone please tell me what to do? I am so sick of what this stupid virus did to my computer and I don't have a lot of money to pay someone to fix it. Thanks more

Resolved Question: Computer Security Programs that are "enough"?

Hey everybody I got some questions on which security programs I should use in each category. Im going to list some of the programs I know, and then you can tell me which one I should use based on your experience and what you got. 1. Anti virus = Microsoft Security Essentials, Avast, Antivir, AVG 2. Spyware/Adware/Malware = SuperAntiSpyware, Malware-Bytes, Ad-aware, Spy-bot SD, Windows Defender 3. Firewall = Zone Alarm, Windows Firewall The main thing I want is computer performance (resource usage) over security because I am starting to notice slow-downs. I know my preferences sounds reckless, but my surfing habits are not. I am currently using Avast, SAS, MB, and Zone Alarm. The setup I am really interested in is MSE, Win D, and Win F. Is it enough? What are your thoughts and ideas? The reason for my interest in Microsoft programs is because they seem to not slow down my laptop, whereas 3rd party programs needs to load and thus decrease computer reaction time. Thanks. PS: My OS is Windows 7 Ultimate 32-bit PSS: Which browser do you use? I used to use Chrome and contradicting to what it is supposed to do, it was slower and uses ALOT more memory than firefox. more

Voting Question: What kind of virus does not let me go to google and says that my virus software is out of date?

So I am working on a friends computer and I have done two virus scans, both very through. (AVG and symantec) and nothing comes up. I can not get to google, and at random times Windows is saying that the anti-virus is out of date. which i know it isn't. Then it will say that the firewall is done, than it will be fine again. Voting Question: Help!!! windows 7 activation problem.?

ok so here is the story. baught a asus ul50tv from bestbuy. works great and all but once my trend micro internet security trial ran out is when the problem started. every time i would try to install another freeware antivirus like avg free or avira anti virus it would keep saying conflict in software unistall trend micro. but the program was stubborn and wouldnt unistall. after weeks of trying everything that i could do to unistall it someone suggested that i just use my desktop windows 7 disc to reinstall windows and wipe my laptop. made a image disc just in case things didnt work out. lost it. now im stuck with a laptop that says "windows 7 build 7600 this copy of windows is not genuine" what are my options to undo this and what are the risks of not doing anything? can i just reinstall windows again and activate it cause i read somewhere that there is a certian update that checks your OS . and last question if i call windows will i get introuble and be stuck with this until i save up to buy another copy or will they understand and let me activate my original windows 7 copy that came with the laptop. cause neither the product key on my laptop or the one on my desktop will be accepted by windows activation. more

Resolved Question: HKLM and HKCU -- Should I be concerned?

I just installed MalwareBytes and AVG Free Anti Virus software to get rid of a nasty AntiVir Trojan that infected my computer a couple days ago. After removing the infected objects, I was told I had to reboot. I did, and now my computer is working normal again without the virus clogging everything up. However, when I started up my computer, there's an icon in the tray at the bottom right (I'm running on Vista) that told me it had blocked some "startup" programs. I looked into it, and it took me to System Configuration, where it shows a list of all the blocked startup programs and their manufacturers. At first, I was just going to go through and uncheck all of the programs I knew I could trust such as Apple, Google, mSpot, Dell, etc. But then I looked at the location, and all of them are either beginning with HKLM or HKCU. This concerned me. I can tell which programs are a part of the virus, but should I just disable all of these programs? I'm so confused, please help. more

Resolved Question: Avast Anti virus Uninstallation?

Okay so, I've had avast for a very long time and I've been happy, but I've hit a few bumps along the road. It was Avast V.4.8 and I kept getting the constant pop up for me to update to V.5. I eventually got frustrated with it constantly popping up so I decided to update. When I installed V.5 it attempted to completely remove all of 4.8 and put 5.0 in place, but it ended up freezing my computer. So I switched to AVG as my new anti virus, but during installation it asks me to uninstall Avast 4.8 and so I checked the Avast folder and due to 5.0 deleting many of what was left of it, I couldn't appear to find it in the add or remove programs. It may be a complete different problem but this is the direct Error that I received during installation of AVG Error: Action failed for file avgrkx86.sys: starting service.... Something amongst those line of words. Help is appreciated. more

Resolved Question: Can Trojan viruses cause loss of disk space? PLEASE help! Want to install and use Malwarebytes, but am worried?

I use AVG and got a hit on a threat...So I did a scan and it found 2 trojan horse viruses: trojan horse backdoor.generic12.cbtj trojan horse spamtool.ghb I moved them to the virus vault and tried downloading and installing an Adware thing and I got a warning that my Local Disk (F:) was low on space. I checked it out and freaking almost ALL of the space on that is almost gone! I tried uninstalling programs I wasn't using and still NOTHING! I recently suffered some sort of crash or something on my comp and ended up having to reinstall windows. I've kept up to date on my Windows Updates. My firewalls are all active, I run AVG everyday at 7 AM and I have Ccleaner and Spyware blaster....How could these viruses have gotten on? I moved these 2 viruses to AVG's vault and loe and behold, I had 13 more viruses stored in the vault that AVG must have found at earlier times and stored them itself cause I had no idea about those ones! I cannot afford to have my computer cleaned at this time and probably won't be able to afford it for about a month or so...Until then, what can I do to further protect myself and remove these viruses and could they have caused the disk space loss? I heard of a program called MalwareBytes that is supposedly REALLY good and removes a lot of viruses that anti-viruses don't, but I am worried I will NOT have enough disk space to install it. PLEASE help me...I really need it! more

Voting Question: Ridiculous computer problems. Plz help.?

My computer is slow and I've got a few different anti-virus programs installed, because earlier I was trying to thoroughly check my computer. I've got Avast installed, AVG & Trend Micro and when I try and uninstall any of them the computer more or less freezes, but I can still move the mouse and minimize programs and such, but I can't even open the start menu to restart, so I have to hold the power button down (which I know is bad) and everytime it comes back on the problem is worse and worse. Simple things like bringing up the recycle bin will freeze up the computer for like 15 minutes at a time. It was a very sudden problem that popped up out of nowhere. I went to start click run and then did the %temp% and that made it run quicker for a moment, but there's still the same issues with it freezing up, saying "not responding" not letting me uninstall programs, lagging, etc. I just don't know what to do, someone plz help. Hopefully I don't have a virus. more

Resolved Question: Help with free AVG Anti-virus?

My family decided to use the free AVG Antivirus instead of mcafee (which we had been using before), because this guy we know who is really into computers told us its really good considering its free. We downloaded it on our laptop just fine (its an HP laptop with windows vista), but we're having trouble with it on our desktop. There is no trouble downloading or opening the program. When you open it, it has a simple introduction, and then there is a "next" button. Upon clicking "next", the program begins searching for internet connection. For some reason, it cant find internet connection on this computer (but we can definitely go online). It then asks you to check your connection and try again, or, if you have a proxy server, to enter the info about the proxy. We didnt know what a proxy was, but after doing some research, we've determined that we probably dont have one. We do, however, have a wireless router and a DSL modem. Although we have the wireless router, we dont use a wireless connection for this computer because it doesnt support wifi (the router is just for the laptop). So, we have the desktop connected to the router with a chord, and we thought that maybe it is somehow being used as a proxy. The computer is an HP desktop with windows XP and a pentium D processor. We've had various issues with it in the past. It does not run very smoothly, and doesnt run certain games properly. This makes me think that the problem might somehow be coming from the computer itself. but anything is possible. Unfortunately, AVG has really crappy customer support for people using their free stuff. My mom and I called them, they directed us to the "free support" stuff, a woman answered, my mom explained everything to her and then she just didnt say anything. Eventually we just hung up. So if anyone has any ideas on what the problem may be or how to fix it, that would be great.we did already uninstall mcafee casue we knew they might conflict. also, i dont personally know the computer guy, my dad was staying with this guy's parents when he was on a business trip, and the guy told him he should use AVG. I previously tried to use Avast, but eventually it kept telling me my trial was over and that i needed to pay to keep using it, so eventually we just got rid of it. I might have downloaded the wrong version though. more

I attempted to use the AVG trial program & followed instructions as the site requested. I first removed my McAfee Software. This was successful. Then the AVG trial program requested that I remove the Defense program from my computer. This is where things got strange. The Defense program is still running & overrunning my screen with pop-ups (even though I have all pop-ups blocked) & it is no longer on the list. So...I cannot remove it if I cannot find it! What smart ass created this thing & how can I get rid of it? I cannot install any security or anti-virus software until I remove the Defense Center program/s. Where can I pull it up on my system to delete/remove it? WHERE is it hiding? HELP!BTW: The free trial MacAfee program was expired & not working. That's why I thought it was safe to remove it. Was this a mistake on my part? Now I don't have any anti-virus protection because I cannot install the free trial AVG unless I can remove the Defense Center junk. more

Voting Question: Virus on a laptop prevents you from downloading anti-virus, can anyone help?

Okay, so my friend let me try and fix his laptop and so i cleared out a bunch of unwanted programs that were just basic things, like an old calculator application, and some random game downloads and such. Well, he got this virus it appears from a modding website that we were trying to work. So now he gave the laptop to me and i was gonna try and download Trend Micro PC Pro but it say that his laptop doesn't fit the criteria. His laptop is running Windows XP 2002 version with Service Pack 3 but even though its already updated on that part fully (there are only 3 service packs) its still will not let me download any the software so i think i need to update it to a higher model, so my choices are either Windows 7 or Windows Vista. WELL HERE'S THE PROBLEM, i go to download, from the microsoft official website, anything that may help update his laptop and allow me to download some help, turns out every time i go to download "anything" and i mean "ANYTHING" it will redirect me to a basic "web page not found" or one of those "HTML40 something not working" and there are some other different ones i get. I know im connected to the internet so im sure that its the virus that is preventing me from downloading anything. I've already restored the system this time making sure not to clean out any programs that may help with downloads but it still isn't progressing anything. Does anyone have any idea what to do? I just spent the last 14 hours working on this thing but i've only taken Computer Applications 1 when a High-school Freshman so i Absolutely no clue, im afraid im gonna be forced to randomly delete things that look foreign until something works and i don't want to do that. If you do have a solution can you please recommend some good FREE anti-virus software that i may download if i still can't get the right requirments for the Trend Software? I know about AVG, some friend of mine told me of some Anti-Virus Doctor thing, and peopel say Nortons good but i dont know if they have free downloads. Thanks a whole bunch to everyone who can help! more

Resolved Question: How do I remove a trojan horse from my laptop?

I tried to watch an online video when I received the trojan horse. Within minutes it wouldn't let me get onto Firefox or IE. My anti-virus is AVG and even though it catches the duplicates, every time I try to open the program itself to run a full computer scan, the trojan intercepts and won't let me open it. I thought I found where it was located, but when I tried to delete it, it wouldn't let me (even when I did it in safe mode...) Now it's the like the trojan has gone invisible. It's still there and it's coming from the same path, but when I try to find it again, it's not there. I have no idea what to do. I can't get online so I'm unable to download any programs. I tried downloading a malware program to my thumb drive and transferring it over, but as soon as I tried downloading it to the infected laptop, the malware intercepted and wouldn't let me open it. I'm clueless as to what to do now! more

Resolved Question: How do I remove the Antivir Virus??

on youtube, being the dumbass that I am, knowing it was probbaly a virus, I clicked on a link and it installed it on my comp. I can get into safe mode, but when I go to a file, it almost always gives me access denied. I AM the "hidden built in admin". heres what it does: 1. blocks cmd 2. blocks regedit 3. can't open winwar 4. no internet 5. cancels my scans with my LEGIT AVG anti-virus. I managed a scan in safe mode but it every file was "locked and not tested". 6. can't access startup manager blocks just about every program trying to get me to buy a piece of crap "legit"(thats bullshit) version of it for 50$$$$ just for 3 months. Please help as the computer that was infeceted is my dads and he doesn't know that I have an account on there. I took the admin account because there is NOTHING to do in the area i live in. I'd prefer to get it off with out him knowing. thanks for any help more

Resolved Question: My Acer Aspire one doesn't have empowering technology , system restore, or wifi function. Destructive restore?

My only options are using a thumb drive to get files to it, although when i transferred several anti-virus programs ( avg, ad aware, etc...) It couldn't load the program after the installation wizard, says the file is configured incorrectly. I'm thinking i might have to take it in somewhere. tried alt f10 , f11. When I try to start it in safe mode, the computer displays a bunch of directories until it fills the page and there it stays. more

Resolved Question: Just re-installed Windows, what other programs do I need?

I've installed Windows XP, Firewall (Zonealarm) Anti-virus (AVG) Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, and Adobe Reader and Flash. I'll probably install Open Office. What other programs will I need, for day to day surfing, and browser based gaming? Any Recommendations?Excellent quick responses so far, thank you. I had already put on VLC, Firefox and Ccleaner. Not sure about codec packs. DVD's will play with VLC and no video editing will be done. Possibly the odd CD burned, so need Nero or similar (for free!)Isn't Java including with SP3 ? Or something... I just thought it's not needed now? I'll check. more

Resolved Question: What is the best, free, virus/malware security? OR combination?

READ ALL! I have 3 computers and 1 laptop in my house. The laptop is infected with lots of Trojans and has no protection besides something called 'ZoneAlarm'. One of the computers has nothing besides Malware bytes. Two of the computers have Norton 2009. How can I improve their protection? If you can, explain what each of the downloads will do. If I have to remove Norton, tell me how to do it. I heard Norton 2009 is bad. What's your opinion? I got suggested this, is it good? And I thought that Spybot was a lot of trouble? Malwarebytes Avast Pro Anti Virus Spybot Search & Destroy What about this? http://www.avast.com http://download.cnet.com/Malwarebytes-Anti-Malware/3000-8022_4-10804572.html Running Hitman pro3.5 as a backup malware removal program. http://www.superantispyware.com I've heard AVG is good? Resolved Question: I need help getting rid of this Virus or whatever it is for good.?

Ok, I recently got the AV Security Suite thing on my computer. I downloaded Malware Bytes Anti Malware and yeah, I got rid of the pop ups. At least now I can open everything on my computer, because that infection would block me from opening anti spyware and anti virus stuff. But I eventually got rid of it. I did a full scan after with MB and it came out clean. Then I went to google, to look up something, and when I clicked on my link, it took me to a completely different search engine that Im sure is full of virus infected scams and the like. It always says, "Jump,Redirect" on the top left of my screen when I do this, and when I click back, it won't let me out. Other times another browser window will just open up randomly to some scam site, saying Ive won something. So I followed someones advice and downloaded AD-AWARE, which also scanned me clean. Im really pissed off that my AVG hasn't caught these threats and Im probably going to download a better program. Anyway, I know next to nothing about computers, so can someone give me detailed instructions on what to do to get rid of this "Jump/Redirect" virus or whatever it is? By the way, Im using an HP Mini 110, so I don't have a CD drive. I need this fix to be free as well. If it can't be free, tell me anyway. My Internet is from Verizon (VZAccess or whatever). My browser is Internet Explorer, and I have Windows XP. more

Resolved Question: I need to get rid of a fake antivirus program that somehow got onto my computer. Please help me!?

This program is named Earth AV and it's really annoying. It's making windows appear on my screen and it's interrupting my internet browsing time. I've even gotten another trusted anti virus program, AVG Free 9.0, and it says there is no viruses detected on my computer, when Earth AV says there are 41 viruses on my computer. It also is trying to make me pay 100+ dollars for it to remove these viruses that don't exist. I've deleted two things that I thought might contain it (the program itself through programs and features on the control panel, and this ER game that appeared around the same time Earth AV did and didn't work) But it's still there! I really need help! more
