Voting Question: Can someone help me with updating my AVG antivirus software?

So I click the button to update my AVG software. It starts downloading and gets to 100% complete, but then it says "Internet connection is required to download AVG 8.5 setup file automatically from the Internet. Internet settings will be obtained from the AVG 7.5 Update Manager." I don't understand what that means. Obviously I have internet connections because I'm able to get on here and ask this question. I have posted numerous times today (sorry yo bother you all).Because I have an array or problems with my antivirus protections. I have AVG 7.5 and Kaspersky still somewhat installed into my PC.I uninstalled AVG a year ago and Kaspersky about 2 weeks ago.I have noticed that they are BOTH on and the same time.I want to delete both of them though.And I can not seem to manage it. I have downloaded 2 tools to uninstall Kaspersky...and one is for the 2010 and another for the 2009 version.BOTH have told me that they can not find Kaspersky in my system. I have tried to delete it all manually through the Registry through the guidance of someone else who has helped me.And it seems that a file "LEGACY_KLIF" can not be deleted.Nor can a subfolder named "0000" or it's keys be deleted.It says that it can not delete them.So I have been trying to find a way too.As I even entered safe mode to perform this action.It still will not work. With AVG.That's another thing.it is telling me it is on,in my "Security Center".I have downloaded a AVG removal tool.More than one,for diffferent bit requirements(I have 32 bit I believe but I thought I would try the 64 bit).And the 32 bit has a program that I run.And it says "This application will remove AVG from your computer.It can require one or more restarts during the cleaning process.Please save all your work and close all other applications.Do you want to continue?" After avg 7.5 expired i tried downloading AVG 8.0... but it doesn't download properly. So i took Avira instead. I've been enjoying AVG free 7.5 on my w98 machine, but they've stopped supporting w98. There are no more updates for 7.5 and 8.0 won't run on w98. Is there another free antivirus program I can use on this machine without replacing the operating system? I have Norton antivirus also, and it's paid through June so I'm not in a panic. I like AVG best though and was hoping I woulnd;r have to pay Norton again this year.Thanks so much, folks. As the w98 machne sinks into its inevitable and planned obsolescence, I'll just renew the Norton antivirus as long as that's supported and put AVG 8.5 on my Toshiba Satellite/ Vista machine. The cost of a new OS and unforseen whatever led me to take the path to a newer machine and OS. When the old w98 pentium goes dark, I'll still be able to exist in the virtual world. my computer infected by an unknown virus recently. it entered in my pc through a pen drive.it blocked hidden files to show. also It blocked safe mode, antivirus, firewall, regedit & task manager. i can't install any antivirus after that. i had avg 7.5 free edition in my pc. but avg was unable to detect this virus. after that this virus blocked my avg antivirus and my comodo pro firewall. i can't open my pc in safe mode. when i open tasmanager through a code, taskmanager opens for a while but not showing any virus process running in my pc. but it's running i know bcaz when i connect a fresh pendrive in my pc that virus entered in that pendive. i can show hidden files through a code. then i can see a autorun file in that pendrive which is read only i can not delete that autorun file. that autorun file creating a command file with .pif extension. i have windows xp sp2 in my pc. can anyone help me to remove that virus from my pc? i am really very much worried about it. Antivirus 2009 and a bunch of pop ups were on my computer. I was able to remove Antivirus 2009 with a system restore, but the pop ups are still there. I think the pop ups are coming from an internal source. I already have Google pop up blocker, and I have another pop up blocker program that was working before the restore (for some reason it isn't now, maybe because I haven't restarted). Hi, I have just started an Orange Mobile Broadband (Internet Everywhere) contract (well.. I am still on the trial).. I have been trying to speed up my internet connection. The network connection is "Excellent", yet I am getting anywhere between 100 bytes per second and 50 kilobytes per second! This, to me, is not acceptable - they are calling it "Broadband" for starters, yet its slower than Dial-up? Anyway I contacted Orange Technical Support yesterday, and they said to make sure any firewalls I have are switched off just for testing purposes. I switched off Windows firewall, but the security center said a firewall is still on - AVG Firewall to be more specific. I closed down AVG antivirus and it still said it was on. I have googled this problem loads, and it seems that AVG free (the version I have) does not have a firewall, and I cant find anything in AVG control center about a firewall. Does anyone have any ideas about how to solve this problem? My AVG free version is 7.5.552. I do not have a "Tools" menu in the AVG control center, as has been suggested in the past. Many many many many many thanks to anyone who comes up with a solution!! RichardI actually tried something else. I looked up recommended antivirus programs and found avast was quite popular. I uninstalled avg and installed avast. My computer now says no firewalls are now running, yet there is no difference in the download speed. The download speed, according to http://www.mybroadbandspeed.co.uk/, is ~350 kbps, which is about 43 - 45 kB/s. The 2nd figure should be in the region of several hundred, according to phones 4 u (the company I am with for the contract - the dongle is just using the Orange network). One of the guys in the store said that he has Orange Mobile BB and he is getting a download speed of several hundred kB/s.. call me gullible if you like for believing him! Anyway I cant think what else to do as this didnt work. I will try contacting Orange technical support again tomorrow but other than that I think my only option is to swap to a different network. Does anyone have any alternatives? more

I currently have AVG 8. I used to have AVG 7.5 because I found that it caused the least amount of lag/performance issues on my computer, however since changing to AVG 8 I have found that whenever I start the computer avgupd.exe or a similar AVG process is using up roughly half my CPU-causing my computer to take far longer to start (by start I mean like opening a program-not booting) Anyway. my question is: Does anyone know any performance efficient anti virus programs? I am willing to buy one, but I would like to see what people think of it before I purchase one. I also previously purchased Norton Antivirus, however I then discovered it was designed for someone with the computing ability of an armless monkey, and I would like one that has some advanced capabilities. PC randomly restarted while surfing the internet; anti-virus programs won't run. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I was surfing the internet when my PC randomly restarted. I knew right away that my PC had become infected, and when it rebooted I expected to see a window in the bottom right corner of my screen telling me to download some rogue anti-spyware program. That didn't happen, however. There are no visible or obvious problems with the PC, and I wouldn't know I have this problem if I wasn't there when it happened. I have Spybot S&D and AVG Antivirus. When I tried to run them, nothing would happen. Renaming their .exe files worked, but they could not find anything. I downloaded HiJackThis, and a whole list of other programs to help me remove whatever I had (including Malwarebytes' Anti-Maleware). None of the programs did anything, or would even run. Upon renaming HiJackThis and looking through the log, I found a file named "brastk.exe", which I found to be a bit suspicious. Google searches confirmed that its no good. Running Malwarebyte's seemed to help; it found ~24 infected files and removed them all except one (brastk.exe). The PC was rebooted in order for the files to be deleted. When the reboot was complete, I was able to open Spybot and HiJackThis fine without any renaming. Spybot found nothing. AVG will still not open. Running Malwarebytes' again found brastk.exe and 'removed' it. The file is still there. I am currently running a Malewarebytes' full scan. Its been scanning for 31 min and has found nothing. I doubt it will find anything. AVG will still not open, and when trying to update it from 7.5 to 8.0, the installation fails. Google searches say that this file is related to some sort of rogue antispyware program, but I have not seen anything of the sort. It doesn't seem to be causing any problems, but I do not feel safe while it is still on my PC. If the full scan finds anything, I will add the information.The full scan found 3 files. They were successfully removed. I then ran a quick scan again, and brastk.exe is still there. Each time I run a scan, it is removed, but comes back right away. Malwarbytes' seems to be useless. I don't have this "Antivirus 2009" program anywhere. No popups or error messages or anything regarding it. more

Well i currently tried to download a file of the internet and got a huge virus off of it. I have Norton antivirus 2008 and it only blocked the trojans attempting to attack. It didn't block or delete any of the spyware/malware that came along with it. I delete MicroAV off pc along with some of the registry keys of it i could find.
