Alright, I don't want people trying to tell me to download some free crap just for the sake of it being free. In my past experience, you get what you pay for with free...nothing. I've used both AVG and Avast, both of which have been terrible. Currently I'm using Microsoft Security Essentials with Malwarebytes, and I'm not particularly impressed by it either. I don't mind dishing out some money for a good anti virus I can rely on. So, in your opinion what is the best out there? I use my computer for online classes, a little bit of social networking and photo sharing (like facebook and deviantart), and over all random web surfing if this information helps any. more

So I've been using AVG for two years now and it has done it's job well. So i was wondering what anti virus programs would you recommend? Preferably one that can let me install it onto two computers. If it helps I have a gateway desktop running XP and a laptop running on Vista. I download music quite often and rarely download from torrents. Oh and please don't tell me to go with a "free anti virus". I found trojan horses on my friends flash drives who were running free anti viruses.After i discovered the trojan horses, they checked their computers and sure enough their computers were infected. The free programs they were using did not detect the infection and did not even try to block it. Every time i scan their flash drives I find more malware even after i've cleaned it out days before. Like i said before, i've been using AVG and my computers are clean. Why would i want to risk using something thats free and does not give me the same quality of protection? more

She said I could use one, is Norton 360 any good with macs? I was doing some research and I found that Norton can cause problems with mac software, ie messing up downloads, deleting files you don't want deleted etc. But this was information is all based upon data from 2006. I went to a site to download a patch for a game and before I clicked anything I got bombarded with the Malware Doctor junk. It completely screwed up my computer and brought along 1800 different viruses and spyware. My Spybot Search & Destory did not detect it all, and even after I downloaded Malwarebyte's Anti-Malware and Stopzilla (which I feel is a scam now that I fell victim to it), there are still issues. Stopzilla claimed to remove all of it and then prompted a reboot. I went through this process at least 8 times, and each time it found the same critical issues, claimed to clean them, and restart it. Keep in mind I actually paid for this program out of desperation and stupidity. Malwarebyte's Anti-Malware actually did remove some of it, but Spybot Search & Destroy goes nuts every time I start up my computer asking me to allow or deny changes. The main leftovers of this fiasco are Winlogon and Boot.execute issues. Upon start up, a prompt from Spybot comes up saying: Category: Winlogon Notifiers Change: Value deleted Entry: TPSvc Old Data: New Data: And all I can do with that is allow the change. here is no option to deny the change, unless I hit ctrl+alt+del and end the task. I allowed it a few times, but it still pops up every time I start up. The Boot.execute one only comes up half of the time I restart.I don't remember the exact wording, but the prompt says: Category: Boot.Execute Change: Value deleted Entry: I don't remember Old Data: boot.execute/ls*delete (something to that effect anyway) New Data: boot.execute/ I can allow or deny that change, and I always deny it. Also, I had a search hijacker which redirected anything I clicked off of Yahoo, Google, or Bing into whatever it pleased. I could click a link to bestuy.com and it would take me to a fake website for the best buy on pottery. Again, all 3 programs claimed to delete that hijacker, but it still does it, and two IE pages open up with such fake websites in addition to my homepage when I open one Internet Explorer browser. I always end task before they can fully load. So, is there anything I can do, or should I just smash the laptop on the pavement outside? more

Okay so my computer freezes as soon as it starts up. It loads everything and as soon as I click ANYTHING it freezes. I thought it was just loading but no, it actually freezes. I'm trying to find the source of the reason but here's what's happened so far: -My brother spilled some water on the monitor, not the computer. This caused the monitor's volume up button to break. -.- -I thought I could try to fix the monitor by restarting the computer (stupid, I know) so the problem is, when I start up my computer so many things have to load because I have this HP printer and every time it's low on ink, I get this pop up when my computer starts that tells me it's low on ink. I also have this pop up that tells me my Avast is obsolete and I need to get a new one. Both of these pop ups just annoy me so much so I decided to try and get rid of the Avast pop up problem by getting Avast free anti virus (my mom won't buy the proper protection, so I have to get it free this time :/). And this is personally where I think something went wrong, I downloaded the free Avast and while I was downloading it, I uninstalled some useless programs on my computer because I thought it would free up space. I only uninstalled 3 things, 2 from HP and were for photo editing which I didn't need. When I installed the Avast anit virus, it was recommended that I restarted my computer. I wanted to wait for the HP things I was uninstalling to finish first. Once they uninstalled, I restarted the computer and then the freezing thing started. The Avast anti virus program said that I should have restarted the system or there could be a system failure and I did restart but I'm thinking that a system failure could have happened anyways? I want to uninstall the free Avast because I think that may be the problem but how can I uninstall it if my computer freezes? I am about to get an ipad, but from my past ipods, i've had trouble putting music on them. The itunes people said I need to download the latest version of itunes because when i plug in my ipod or whatever, it doesnt recognize it. My friend's laptop has the Anti virus Soft Platinum installed. This software is preventing any other anti virus program on her computer to work. I have tried to install the AVG free software, but it keeps telling me to uninstall the Anti virus Soft Platinum software, but it doesn't show up in the add/remove programs. I have used windows defender, Microsoft windows malicious software removal tool, and Microsoft security essentials software and none of these programs detected the Anti virus Soft Platinum software. I did download spyware doctor and it scanned the computer and found 100 hits of spyware, but the program will not remove the adware/spyware unless I pay for it. I never brought that kind of software before, usually if I get adware/spyware on my computer I just zap it and reload it. I'm thinking that's the best thing to do for my friend but she really doesn't want me too. So any suggestions would be great. more

And I've tried downloading and Googling full version keys but they all get blacklisted. I've also tried free ones like Microsoft Security Essentials, Avast, Avira and Panda Cloud but they don't seem to be doing much of anything and I rank them down there with McAfee. Voting Question: Need help reinstalling Windows XP - Don't have original Setup CD, "system32\config\SYSTEM missing or corrupt"?

My Gateway laptop (purchased a few years back from Best Buy) was running XP but got infected with a virus (Antivirus System Pro) and then wouldn't boot back into Windows in any mode (Safe, Normal, etc.), it just kept looping back to this Advanced options page, so I couldn't run any anti-malware. Sadly, I DO NOT have an XP setup CD (Don't recall ever getting one, though I have a plastic packet with some sort of code on it, maybe registration?). So to try to restore the system off the hard drive using F11 key and (because the "non-destructive restore" wouldn't work) a System Restore with Backup. That seemed to run fine, but after windows started opening, the screen went black and a Windows Message comes up saying "The system is not fully installed. Please run Setup again." I tried doing another System Restore, same thing. Tried "Last known good configuration" and got the "windows\system32\config\SYSTEM missing or corrupt" message saying to insert the Setup CD and push "r" -- but I don't have the CD. I do have another computer that works. I'd hate to buy a new OS and not sure if that would work or is necessary. Can I download XP installation to CD from microsoft, or try something else (maybe in Advanced Options, Boot Menu or BIOS settings -- the things I CAN access) to get the system to fully install? I'm not very tech savvy so could use detailed instructions. THANKS!!!One good samartan suggested I call a technician. Is this something I really can't fix myself? more

I want the best of free virus/spyware protection, no trials, no programs that have a declining quality over time; something I can put on my computer and feel like I don't have to worry about it because it's going to do it's own thing and let me know when there's in issue. my comp is extremely slow and i wanna throw the shait to the floor....i have the avast anti virus crap but i feel like it is doing nothing for my laptop...what software is free out there or if there is anything that is WORTH getting for virus protection please let me know. listing prices would be awesome by the way. and ALSO is there places where i can bring my comp to like get it cleaned out and make it faster or whatever cause im mad at my comp and we arent friends anymore T.T more
