Resolved Question: What is the best antivirus software for Windows Vista?

I just got a new laptop and it has Windows Vista. With my old laptop (Windows XP), I've used Trend Micro Internet Security and it worked great. However, I've heard Trend Micro doesn't work too well with Windows Vista, so now I'm looking for another anti virus software. I've heard different opinions from different people, so it wouldn't hurt to hear more. Basically, what is the best anti virus software for Vista and why? If possible, give pros and cons. Right now, I've narrowed down to 3 choices: Trend Micro (because I've used it before with XP) , Norton (because it has received great reviews for the 2009 version, and Kaspersky (has been known to be reliable but expensive, but the 2009 version has been taking hits from users)SORRY I copied over the previous info. Resolved Question: Why is the computer still slower + weird after Kaspersky supposedly deleted a trojan?

Hi, I've never used any type of antiVirus or antiSpyware software before so I'm a newbie with this stuff. I stupidedly ran a bogus exe file last night and ended up with a Win32.Agent.cfqz. I also found jestertb.dll, sys1.dll and sys2.dll adwares on my computer. The trojan itself had programs crash frequently, make the computer slow like it was '95 again or something, and my dual second monitor that runs with a usb adapter goes black for 1-2 seconds randomly. Kaspersky said the trojan was in my Flock cache. So I first had it delete it and then wiped private data clean through Flock. Compared to the time the trojan was around, the computer is much better, but it's still worse than it was two days ago. In the two hours I've used the computer since the trojan has been gone, the screen has flickered twice. I've had this dual monitor for a month and it never flickered before so I'm positive the trojan or adware caused it. Also twice when I clicked on the start menu, it would freeze for 5 or 10 seconds. Flock also became real slow with 5 tabs relatively quickly...I usually have 10ish tabs on for a few hours before the RAM usage slows it down. What should I do? I've been looking on how to wipe all temporary files and internet files. Webroot Window Washer seems to have the best reviews but I thought I'd ask here before throwing down $20. Also should I have a second antispyware and antivirus software? I used the SUPERAntiSpyware free version and a paid copy of Kaspersky. I wouldn't mind spend around $25 or so for an antispyware software but I'd rather not buy a second anti-virus (I'm poor :P). Sorry if I wrote too much I'm just a bit annoyed right now, but seriously thanks to anyone who takes the time to help. Also I just noticed in the logs that Kaspersky automatically deleted a trojan downloader called Trojan-Downloader.Win32.Delf.fwe. Thanks again for any help. more

Resolved Question: what would be the best anti-virus software,I need suggestions?

My Norton Internert Security subscription will end up in 48 days, I have decided to dedicate some days to consider other anti-virus programs. Since I only have used this software from Norton, I lack the experience to compare it with the other programs in the market. And I don't know if I'm using a good program or are there better programs then the one I have(Norton).I have had it for two years, and I should recognize that it has intercepted 5 or 6 troyans in this period of time. However it slows down my computer when it's scanning in the background. I wouldn't care if it slows down my computer if it does the job to protect my system, although annoying, however if there are programs that do a good work on protecing my computer and at the same time they do not slow it down, that's what I would like to find out. I'll appreciate your input and suggestions good or bad, I'm sure if somebody has used Norton and other programs would be in a perfect position to shared those experiences, I'll analyse them carefully to determine if I'm Okay with Norton or if I would be better with other more reliable programs. I have searched online, but I have not concluded yet which is the appropiate anti-virus program for my computer, because some reviews rate Norton as a good program, some other reviews give Norton a very low rating. I'm certain that your valuable opinions would clearify my options when the day comes. Some important features in these programs would be: excellent protecion, the less possible compromise on the resources on the computer...I have windows vista home premium. Thank you for sharing your opinions. more

Resolved Question: What is the difference between ZoneAlarm Anti Spyware and Internet Security?

Hey, What is the difference between ZoneAlarm Anti Spyware and ZoneAlarm Internet Security IN TERMS OF SPYWARE DETECTION AND DELETION? In this site, it lists and review the best software for specific genres (e.g. Anti Spyware, Anti Virus, Internet Suite) This one is the review for ZoneAlarm Spyware: http://anti-spyware-review.toptenreviews.com/zonealarm-anti-spyware-review.html And this is the review for ZoneAlarm Internet Security: http://internet-security-suite-review.toptenreviews.com/zonealarm-review.html The suite managed to be number 2 in the lists with the highest spyware detection but in the spyware standalone, it's in 6th place with pretty poor review. So what makes the suite any better from the standalone in terms of spyware detection and deletion? N.B I'm asking this because I'm planning to get a separate anit virus and a separate anti spyware. Thanks in advance... more

Resolved Question: Can someone advise me on this network setup?

As storage is my main emphasis in this network (I plan to have 2 Terabytes of data total and I would like to have a backed up copy of this size as well). I have decided to go with the following configuration but just want to see about good recommendations. I haven't bought any of my products yet but here is my idea of a small business network for 5 people with 2 printers, 1 scanner, 3 desktops, 2 laptops: modem--> wireless router --> switch --> pc's, printers, server, scanner, wireless access point My products are as follows: Router- Belkin N+ $100 http://reviews.cnet.com/routers/belkin-n... Switch- 3com officeconnect gigabit ethernet switch w/POE $400 http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,229... WAP- 3COM AirConnect 9550 http://www.3com.com/products/en_US/detai... My network is for a small doctor’s office and I am certain it will not grow beyond 5-7 people. I will also be using cat 5 wiring, Kaspersky Anti-virus, and I am thinking about using either Microsoft Ftp publishing (comes with Windows Server 08) for file transferring and maybe Filezilla or WinSCP for remote access The odd thing is that my main software program (EClinical Works) specs a minimum of: Quadcore Xeon 1.4 Ghz, Windows Server 2003/2008, 4GB of memory, at least 16GB (OS) + 30GB (Data) But the oddest thing is that they say the server with this EClinical software shouldn’t run an active directory, RAS, and/or terminal service. Will I need two servers because the one with my software on it doesn’t want an active directory run on it? I’m also a little confused about how the file sharing will work with the Network Attached Storage device, does Windows Server have something in it to implement this? Also from a security standpoint what would I need to address in Windows if I have a NAS, will Windows file sharing be secure between the users/server/clients? My point with the NAS was to save money and separate the data from the server processor (only OS+apps)…also the cheapest servers on Dell have about a 2.4GHZ processor and a 160GB hardrive for about 1600….would buying a nice desktop and putting Windows Server 2008 on it be a better option?? I looked on cnet.com and certainly found that the Buffalo Terastation Home Server NAS (2TB) is my best option...but its uses mirroring and spanning instead of RAID and its write performance is slow due to its RAID 5 configuration. Should I be concerned? The biggest point is that I want my system to be low maintenance, easy to setup, and my switch to be un-managed (aka no IT expert needs to be around to configure the ports…etc)I've heard that the remote device can be a security issue....but I've looked around and it seems difficult to find a server (such as from dell or HP) that has 2 Terabytes of redundant (RAID 1) hard drive space. Also how much onboard memory would I need to have on one server that would someday have 2 Terabytes of memory...wouldn't that be really expensive? I also thought separating the data from the OS+apps would result in better performance and a server that is easier to manage and the server wouldn't have to cache data storage. The NAS emulates a windows share (CIFS). Also I will contact the software company about the active directory thing because I don't want to have to buy two servers that ridiculous. more

Voting Question: How much should I sell my laptop for? And how should I sell it?

I'm thinking of selling my 7 month old X61 Lenovo thinkpad. How much should I sell it for and how should I sell it? These are the specs and a review I found: Lenovo ThinkPad X61 Review BY: Kevin, NotebookReview.com Editor PUBLISHED: 6/20/2007 Click here to Buy a ThinkPad X61 Direct from Lenovo.com by Kevin O'Brien The Lenovo ThinkPad X61 is an ultraportable business laptop geared to individuals who demand the best. Like its larger brothers of the ThinkPad line, it shares all of the same rugged features, as well as the creature comforts of a full-size keyboard. The X61 looks as if Lenovo took a ThinkPad T60 and shrunk it down by 30 percent. Although it is much smaller than its counterparts, it is every bit as fast. Resolved Question: What is the best anti virus? Read before answering.?

Before you answer, I have read reviews on different ones. http://antivirus.about.com/od/antivirussoftwarereviews/a/freeav_2.htm Avast and AVG do not seem to be good when it comes to detecting spyware. While Avast has a pretty good detection rate, its still not good with anti spyware. And according to PC World, only AVG and Antivir are in the top 10. http://www.pcworld.com/article/124475/top_antivirus_software.html I know Kaspersky usually has the highest detection rate. And I also know Norton slows your computer like a turtle. more

Resolved Question: Computering tips (Repost to advertise this guide freely)?

Opinion : Well,it's troublesome doing all these steps to maintain a clean computer, the worst is,when the user doesn't know that his/her computer is infected. Cause not all harmful stuffs has Obvious Symptoms. -------------------------- Basic Browser Setting Browser - Firefox latest version Settings - Under tools button, click option,go privacy tab. *Un tick all the history settings *Un tick all the cookies settings, enable cookie only (not third party cookies) when you're login at website. *Untick ask before clearing privacy data. *Go to security tab, untick all the passwords settings. *Go to advanced tab, make the offline storage to zero mb Internet Options Settings *Tick all the correct internet settings, untick those save passwords etc. *Under security tab, make internet medium setting *Under security tab,Local intranet is High setting, will not have negative effects on the sites that you're viewing. *Under security tab,Trust sites is also High setting, will not have negative effects on the sites that you're viewing. *Under security tab,Restricted site is also High or Custom settings (Custom probably by anti spyware, etc like spybot listed the correct restricted site settings in there) *Under privacy tab, click advanced, prompt for first party cookies (applies to internet explorer,so prompt is the best setting) ,and must tick block third party cookies. *Under content tab,un tick all the Auto Complete settings. --------------------------------------... Anti Virus Softwares Recommend Avira,Avast,Norton but not Mcafee,AVG etc. *Avira highest detection rates, excellent scannings, but the free edition only contain anti virus protection.(Top anti virus detection rates) *Avast, second highest detection rates, excellent Boot-time scan and tons of protection layers of shields (Much more overall protection, decent detection rates too) *Norton 2009,i think it's an complete overhaul version, the memory usage is superb low, extremely rare, since norton is known as system hog, Previous versions used too much unnecessary memory, slows computer down tremendously. The detection rates is good, not sure how much though. The protection is advanced type as stated. Can try by downloading the trail version(Lower detection rates but memory usage is quite low) --------------------------------------... Anti Spywares freewares *Spybot search & destory, protects system settings and so on(Must have) *Spyware Blaster,an anti spyware layer of protection(Must have) *Advanced systemcare 3,nice freeware of registry cleaner + spyware defense provided by iobit. (Though the free edition lacks deep scan etc,but still useful) *Ccleaner --------------------------------------... Excellent Anti Spyware Scanners *Not protection, unless you pay for it *Ad aware 2008 *Malwarebytes *Super anti spyware *Of course, make sure you use the correct settings in every software you uses, common sense. Download Websites Recommendations FileHippo.com - Download Free Software Free Software Downloads and Reviews - Download.com Reformatting Use the detailed reformat instead of quick reformat, its much more effective but much more longer duration...it's safer though. Then re-download all the window updates from the microsoft website, and download an anti virus and updated it before you download any other softwares Scannings It's best to scan things in safe mode, and use the folder option settings in computer correctly for scanning purpose *shows hidden files and folders *Un-tick hide protection operating system files *Un-tick hide extension for known file types *Turn off System Restore, some trojans tends to hide in there etc. Obviously its to let it scan the whole computer or drive thoroughly. Scanning in Safe mode is quite necessary too,Safe mode is F8 key. **Credit to Twtew from Yahoo Answer, under the Title ''Basic computering guide''. Purpose : Obviously not for spamming, just want to post something useful. And nowadays theres a lot harmful stuffs even if you did not visit adult sites. Modified : To add this line, won't be replying to any posts/questions if theres any, just as i mentioned, just to post something useful only. more

Resolved Question: Confused: Macbook or Macbook Pro?

I thought that I had it all figured out, but after reading so many reviews I'm back to square one. I currently have a Vista-powered PC that crashes every hour-two hours. It's a fairly new computer with no installed programs and no internet downloads and up-to-date windows updates and anti-virus software. So after the crashing and freezing; no helpful advice from customer service; and not being able to get any work done, I decided that I want a Mac. I went to Apple's site and researched both models. I went to Best Buy and played with both models and I immediately attached to the MBP. Now I'm back to comparing and I say to myself, "Wow! There isn't much difference between the $1299 MB and the $1999 MBP." My question is: Is the MBP really worth the extra $1000? To any MB/MBP users, does the screen size make that much of a difference? And for MBP users do you really use the multi-touch trackpad? What is each macbook/macbook pro made for (basic, advanced, etc)? Thanks in advance!About my dell: Inspiron 1721, Black and silver, 17" anti-glare screen (1440x900), 2 GB RAM, AMD Turion 64x2 (dual-core) processor, windows vista home premium, wifi, avg virus software, ati radeon 1200 video card and kind of heavy. more

Resolved Question: Best overall computer security anti-virus software?

I was going to purchase the Norton Internet Security Suite 2007. I want something that handles the latest viruses & everything else. I went to read some reviews & they were 50/50 although some bad ones were from people who did not have enough space on their computer for the program & others seemed to not know too much about computers. I believe I had Mcafee in the past & am wondering for all of those out there who have a product that actually works & works well, please let me know. I am NOT interested in programs like the spybotenator (made that up). No sales pitched, just honest answers from people who have actually used a great product or a bad one I should stay away from. ThanksHi All, I do not want a Free one. I have AVG already. I do not mind paying for it at all. I believe it "you get what you pay for". I want complete security.
