There's too many contradictions on which is the best anti virus / anti spy ware, what one person says is good another says is rubbish, and obviously all the websites are going to say their product is the best.
I don't really want to buy any AV because I know that some people say the free downloadable ones are better, so I don't want to waste any money, but because of all the differences in opinion I just though it would be a good idea to download a number of them and run them all, as then I can't really go wrong.
Maybe it's a stupid idea, but I was thinking of getting Avast, Avira, AVG, Ad-Aware Pro, McAfae, Norton, Windows Security Essentials, and Comodo Firewall (all free downloads)

I didn't download the trojan on purpose; I'm really careful when it comes to which sites i visit and what i download...
I knew immediately that it was a virus because i remembered hearing about it awhile back. It told me my computer was infected, pretended to run a scan of my hard disk and then listed some fake viruses that it accused me of having. It then brought up a fake window that looks like the one that tells you whether you have a firewall and antivirus running. The window claimed that i was infected with spy-ware.
The thing then kept trying to connect to The Internet using Internet Explorer (which isn't my default browser) and tried to get me to pay for it to remove the fake virusses from my computer.
I disconnected my computer from The Internet and tried to run my real antivirus software (AVG Free 9.0, regularly updated) but the fake on wouldn't let me, i just kept getting messages saying that the registry entry for any application i tried to run was missing.
The virus kept trying to get me to purchase it by telling me over and over again that i was infected and brought up the same message as soon as i would close it. After i had tried to close it many times, it started bringing up loads of Alert Icons in the toolbar, it created hundreds of them and did so so quickly i couldn't close them down fast enough.
After rebooting my computer several times i had the same problems but noticed that if i opened an application as soon as the desktop appeared, the virus wouldn't stop me (if i waited a few more seconds it would do). First i tried running my antivirus and doing a scan, but the virus was creating so many taskbar icons it slowed my computer down to the point that the scan would stop. Also, the window i was running a scan in would be permanently situated behind the viruses messages.
I was forced to do a system restore and this seems to have got rid of the damn thing.
i was just reinfected with the same virus and system restore no longer gets rid of it
It is stopping me running applications (even if i can run them i usually get runtime errors
I cant update my antivirus or scan the computer, nor can i install programs
Is there a solution that doesn't involve completely wiping my PC?

It's getting pretty annoying because almost everyone thinks that an free anti virus and free anti spyware programs are better than the ones that you pay for at the store. This guy named optimus answered my question very stupidly, he says that saying Norton is protecting my computer is like saying Osama Bin Laden is protecting America. How Ignorant is that ?? He also says I'm not computer savvy while I am really computer savvy, I'm a 1st Year IN College Computer Technology Student so don't call me not Computer Savvy. Avast Anti virus Lets The virus get into my computer and then alerts me while Norton stops it before it gets into my Computer. I had one hard drive that crashed thanks to Free Anti Virus programs that did nothing. How come everyone thinks that Free Anti Virus And Anti Spyware programs are better than the ones that you pay for ?? In my experience the ones you pay for are more effective and more secure than the free ones. I'm using Norton Internet Security and It has total protection. moreVoting Question: Browser locks up after hour or so?
Hello. I'm having constant daily problems with my browser, any browser as I have 3 installed on my laptop. After about an hour and a half or so, I go to click on my web page, or open a new browser tap, and the page won't open and the browser just locks up.
I can do anything else on the computer, and even continue chatting on yahoo messenger, no problem. But the browser just goes into retirement. Mostly I use Google Chrome where the wee revolving circle (to the right) indicates the tab is opening, but when it locks up the circle just revolves slowly to the left and if I try to close the browser with the white cross, red square I have to do so lots of times before the thing will close.
The only way to resolve the problem I've found is to reboot the laptop then it's fine again for another few hours. Very weird.
In case it's of any consequence I have Zone Alarm free edition firewall, Avast free edition anti-virus, I run Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, Spy-bot Search and Destroy for spy-ware but not running at the time.
Anything else you want to know just ask. There seems to be no pattern to what I'm doing at the time.

Over the last few weeks the machine has slowed to the point where at times its totally frozen. I have not added any applications in that time. Machine is only 1/2 full so I dont think its a space issue. Task manager does not show any unusual activity or things going on. The scans have never found any issues. The programs are updated. Im willing to pay if it will solve my problems.

You will need this program or you will not be able to get on line if you are running Internet Explorer. Save it to your desktop and rename it to IEXPLORER.EXE. the main thing here is to make sure you download according to directions. Believe me you don't want these viruses on your computer!

Hi guys i inserted my brother's usb/pen drive /stick in to my computer a week before and just after inserting the pen drive a dialogue box or screen appeared which says ''gotcha you" and "you are in my control".
this same virus caused my brother's laptop to go haywire around two months ago.it slowed the whole OS of that laptop like opening media player took like a couple of minutes also the mouse cursor acted weirdly.so i had to format the laptop's hard drive and reinstall XP.
now i am worried this virus slowing my pc down too.but i really don't want to format and reinstall my XP as all my games and programs are installed and finely tuned.
so anybody knows what is name of this virus/Trojan/spy ware(?) and which anti virus software can successfully detect,remove/delete it from my pc?

When playing music videos on my Dell laptop, the videos frequently freeze and unfreeze constantly. What could be the problem?
Below are few information you might need to know:
My HD ( Hard Drive) space is 71.4 GB, and 34.0 space is being used, leaving a total of 37.4 free space.
And I have 39201 MB free space.
I have McAfee total protection, and no spy-ware or viruses were found. And yes, my Anti Virus protection is a subscription.
Defragmentation did not help, and disk-clean up did not help also.
Plus, the Music Videos are on my computer, not on the Internet. These Music Videos I bought from the Apple Store.

recently a so called mate came round my house and as i was out of the room he started doing something on my pc, when i came back i realized it was a switchblade 2.0 and he had stole all my passwords and history on the DUMP, i deleted the dump of his switchblade so he didn't have anything ( or does he because i only deleted the dump) anyway now i have read up on it and certain topics say that a usb switchblade 2.0 opens a back door( what is this) and a ghost admin account which could contain a key logger. (this all happened a month ago and since then i have been using my internet for private uses and obviously repeating my password, could he be spying on me and gaining Information with key logger or something or is it impossible, is there a way i can find out , i have norton 360 (shit) its not picking up on anything i downloaded avg free trial and it picked up hklm software, i then used avast anti virus picked up nothing then used spyware detector found 18 issues including many cookies a trojan a downloader.belf and 3 password.bift (of something cant remember ) is this it because i cant fix these because i have not payed for spy ware detector i used a free scan, please help the thought of someone watching me or has my info is driving me nuts i cant take it, i thinking also about restoring it to factoring settings, would this help ( i have also deleted all cookies and history and form ...)

also as a side-note i just re-installed my internet provider's (roadrunner high-speed) free ca anti virus, a great anti virus/spy ware/firewall, and its not helping with this problem. i ran the virus/spy ware scans to no avail. still pop-ups on ever page i go to. there are even multiple when i play a video.... i just need to find the cause of this, any suggestions?

OK first i have no clue what the problem could be because ive never had something like this happen before... my personal guess is either my CPU, Video Card, or Mother Board are faulty.
Ive had this computer for about a year now and up till about 3months ago i could play games just fine with high settings and everything without having any lag issues server side or computer side.
But starting 3 months ago a slight lag started appearing (from what ive counted) every 3 seconds but it doesn't just lag the graphics it also lags the audio. Ive done spy ware, anti-virus, and enamelware scans along with fragmenting my hard drive and registry. Ive updated all of my drivers and i've also tried about 4 different games with several settings ranging from High to as Low as possible to see if it might be a problem with one specific game or setting and still no luck.
If anyone knows of a free program in which i could record it happening please feel free to put up a link because i think the problem really needs to be seen to really understand what im trying to say.

okay so, yesterday I got it last night
It all started on myspace when i was look @ bulletins.
then a thingy pop up saying FREE PC, SCAN, blah blah
then i clicked CANCEL and then exit the browser
then it popup again and i CLICKED cancel again and a bigger one pop up something like SPY WARE REMOVER 2009.
then i exit it!!
then took out my laptop battery.
and im so stupid didnt have a anti virus program.
then later download the norton trial
and it detected BACK DOOR trogan.
then it removed it
so today,
i scanned it again and it has nothing and i went on the internet to see does things still pop up
and it did!
like it would be ADS for anti virus programs and stuff
so what can i do to get rid of it!
i dont have a rebooting cd.
so is that a virus or waht.
but it said no virus detected, yet it still have pop ups when i go on websites.

When you tell me to download a free anti virus like avg etc...when I download them it asks me to register. I am really wary about this. I don;t want to be charged at a later date. I know there's been about 100 questions on Y! Answers about this, and I think I've tried them all, and this annoying little bugger still refuses to go away. I've tried turning back the "clock" on my computer, it doesn't work. I've tried the steps on one website (the one where you download Spy Hunter 3 from) and I got that to work until step 3 where it tells you to remove any of the MS AntiSpyware .dll files, but I can't find any of them. I've gone to pctools.com and tried to download Spy Doctor, but it won't install. I've tried Spy Hunter 3, but I can't open it. Super AntiSpyware tells me it had a problem and had to terminate. I went out and bought Windows Live OneCare (I was told by the guy at Staples that it would get rid of it) but it can't download its updates. I bought the computer at the end of November (black friday to be exact) at Best Buy, when I called Geek Squad to ask them about it, they had no idea what I was talking about. They actually told me that I had to pay the 50 bucks to get the soft ware. They don't seem to comprehend that its a virus. My Norton free trial had literally just expired. I got the pop up about Norton expiring about 5 seconds before I got the one about MS AntiSpyware 2009 being "inactive". Also, you know how Windows XP has different user settings? The virus is only under my user settings, not my boyfriend's, why? We use NetZero dial up for our connection, high speed costs a fortune to come out to us, could our connection be too slow for any of the real anti spyware to work? I don't want to have to pay for Norton, I don't like him, I find him almost as annoying as the issue that I'm having with this virus, plus I don't want to give my credit card number out over the internet while I have a virus. My boyfriend was telling one of the guys that he works with about our problem, and he said that he had the same problem, and that he called Dell about it, and that it was actually on his computer when he bought it. Some one from Dell took control of his computer and fixed it for him. Could this have been on here when we bought it? Can I do the same thing with emachines? Not that I have a phone number for them, I didn't even have decent directions on setting up my computer. I had a poster that looks like it was drawn by a 4 year old. Anyway, can anyone help? The guy from Staples was supposed to be one of their computer guys, and he at least knew what we were talking about unlike Geek Squad. Seriously, how can the charge so much money to do stuff when they don't even know about something that everyone else in the world seems to know about?

L&N nutDon't all my internet packets run through my DSL modem/router hub anyway? What would be the difference?So I guess the answer is no because I don't know that the active components of my internet security software can be separated from the scanning part? Also I would have to be running the monitor stuff on the PC anyway?

i download the free version and when i scan it it finds lot of viruses and it happens every time i scanned it but my Trend Micro AntiVirus plus Antispyware that i have for my computer finds few of them and it cleans it but when i scan it again it finds almost same viruses again.
