Resolved Question: Why isn't Malwarebytes Anti-Malware finding the virus on my computer...?

Salut, all. My computer got a virus two days ago that prevents me from opening any executable files (basically, I can't do anything, because every executable file is "infected," according to this malicious program masquerading as a security suite). It's from "antivirone.com." I went on to IE8 and disabled (un-checked) the "Use Proxy server" option, applied the change. I have Vista, BTW. I restarted in Safe Mode (with Networking) and was able to download a free version of Malwarebytes Anti-Malware (version 1.46), performed a "Quick Scan," and the program found nothing suspicious in the registry. So does that mean I need to get the full, latest version ($24.95) of Malwarebytes, or is there some other operation I should be performing or some other antivirus/antimalware software I should be running? Thanks! more

Open Question: mcafee internet security auto updated to 2010 version, 700MB free space released! what the?

does it mean it's reduced to a avast/avrion type of freeware but actually CHARGE you? I'm not saying im not happy with the 700MB free space released, but how the hell did a anti-virus software occupied 700MB more space in an older version in the first place also, i've been searching mcafee files crazy on my computer before the total never exceeded 500MB, now you see u can't trace this program more

Open Question: How to protect my computer from future scareware, malware, ransomeware, and rogue programs for free?

These past months my computer has been infected with Antivirus Soft and Security Suite, which pose as a virus scanner, warning me about fake viruses which in fact it is a virus. They hold your computer as ransom to make you pay for a "full" scan that will supposedly fix my computer which will in fact not and may come back again. I have to boot my computer and safe mode uncheck proxy servers and what not so I can run a virus scanner and it is a very long process which I have completed twice, freeing my laptop of this malware. What I want to know is how can I protect my computer from future scarewares without paying for any virus scanners. My virus protection is outdated which will not protect me from any future upcoming malware/ viruses. Right now I just have malwarebytes anti-malware free version, but that does not protect me from malware, just gets rid of it when I get it. So is there a way I can make it harder for these rogue security software harder to get into my laptop. It is extremely annoying, it does not allow me to run anything which includes internet. Is it possible to make these malwares unable to hack my proxy settings and what not WITHOUT buying virus scanners for my laptop. No stupid answers please, thanks. more

Open Question: Why does my computer all of a sudden slow down and then start making noises?

Could it be a virus? The noises are crackling and popping sounds (like Rice Krispies! lol) that sound like the computer is hard at work performing a task. But it shouldn't be. I installed some MS updates the other day. I don't have an anti-virus program on my computer any more. I didn't like AVG and I can't find another good, free program. What could the noises be? A virus? more

Open Question: How can I get rid of TVshack.cc (or tvshack.net)'s virus?

Okay, so this isn't really a question, it's an answer. TVShack.cc (formerly tvshack.net before the us gov shut them down) is a place where you can stream tv shows. Recently I visited their website and I got a uber-irritating virus. It basically has error messages that tell you to install their antivirus. Also, anytime you try to start the task manager or any admin tasks it comes up with an error message. You are essentially locked out of your computer. So here's what I did to solve the issue and if you have anything to add about your experience, please do so. I am not technically minded so anyone with more specific details should answer with those. I have a HP and use windows 7. 1. Restart Computer in Safe Mode. I couldn't restart it, so I unplugged the battery so that it would shut down incorrectly and then allow me to start in Safe Mode 2. Once it starts in Safe Mode, open task manager, go to the Processes tab (not applications - it's one right from the main tab) and look for processes that look sketchy. If you've never looked in your task manager processes, then you won't realize which ones are different from the regular processes. I found about seven process running all with names like security suite or something. I also found that they were near the top of the list of processes and not near the bottom. Many processes say that if you close them it may harm the functionality of your computer, just shut them down anyway (or ask for help with someone who knows a few things about computers). Don't close anything that you normally use (programs that you want on you PC). 3. In Safe Mode I didn't see any popups. After I closed those processes, I restarted my computer in Safe Mode with Networking capability to look at the internet. I downloaded and installed SpyBot (an anti adware program that is free) and Malwarebytes an anti malware program that is also free. I used wikipedia to find the correct links because sometimes other websites pose as antimalware sites and are really just going to f-up your computer. 4. After running both of those programs after closing the processes I restarted my computer in normal mode and haven't seen any trace of the virus in two days. I hope this helps. Again, if you've had this experience, please share the details of what you went through. Also, if you know more about computers and can add helpful details please do. Best answer goes to most helpful answer. :-) (also having this virus professionally removed should cost you between 60-120) more

Open Question: Crazy virus on computer?

I got a virus that's like an anti-virus program virus, saying ive got viruses and i should go purchase the full software to get rid of it and crap like that. I can't open any programs, not even web browser, but when i click purchase (which i wont) it opened the browser and went to the page, but I need to know a free virus "wiper-outer" to download just in case it lets me use programs for a little while. more

Open Question: computer is slow, why?

its six yo, has 59% free space avail. It takes five minutes to fully load/start up. I have uninstalled unused software and bad software. I removed 2000 or so photos and a cpl hundred docs/files. I try to run scan disk and it doesn't get past compressing old files. Defrag either doesn't need it or doesn't make a bit of difference. I have a current AVG full lic soft on it and it scans daily (I know during the scan the comp will be slow). I run adware, spyware, reg fixer etc to clean and check in those areas, and usually they come back clean (except reg fixer, it usually shows a laundry list of errors). Overall opening a program take eons, the internet is terribly slow (and it is wireless). I checked startup to remove any programs not needed as well as shut down programs once the comp is started that are not needed. Oh and there is a constant bad internet porn habit (since day one). Not sure what all takes place, mainly vids and pics is my guess, don't know if things are downloaded from sites etc, maybe in the beginning, but wouldn't my anti virus soft catch that? So is there something else I can do? Is the computer infected or trashed? Just buy a new one? What can I do to revive this one for say the kiddos to use for their cdrom games? Thanks for your help. more

Resolved Question: Need help with a virus, Win XP?

Help, caught virus, Win XP, avast not detecting it? I was looking for news(I swear it wasnt porn lol) and suddenly a virus downloaded to my computer as soon as I opened the website I found with google. It was letting me very obviously know it was there. It started popping windows telling me I got infected and wanting me to download their software. After few attempts to download free version of avast (that dint work because the virus blocked all internet websites besides the one it wanted me to download from) I pulled the internet cord out. I went on my husbands Mac and downloaded the Avast from there and put it on memory stick. I installed it on my comp. First I ran a quick scan which didnt detect anything. Then I ran complete system scan and that didnt detect anything neither. So I connected the internet plug and in a rush I downloaded an update for avast and then unplugged it again. I rant the scan one more time and again, no threats detected. What should I do? Is there anything besides wiping the system clean? Like some good antivirus? Also I downloaded anti-spyware programs and tried to run those. This virus is blocking all executable files, I cannot open them. Ut does notlet me run even windows task manager. As soon as I ctrl alt delete, it pops a windows saying that program is infected and cannot be executed. Same thing when I try to run or install the antispyware. Also to add to it, the recomended malwarebytes.org software cannot be run, the virus won't let it. more

Resolved Question: How can we remove this virus?

My boyfriend's computer has detected a virus, a few viruses. The problem is he doesn't have an anti virus program to remove said viruses. His computer, which is Window's Vista, isn't letting him get on to the internet at all because of the viruses. It only lets him go to this one site where he has to purchase this antivirus program. Yeah, he doesn't have money to purchase that. Is there a way that he could get onto the internet and get a free virus protection like Avg? more

Voting Question: Bad computer virus help?

I have some weird virus that showed up yesterday when I was watching videos at gametrailers where my Internet stopped working. Everytime i tryed to click something it said it was infected and asked if i wanted to register with some anti virus crap. I restarted the computer several times and quickly did Control alt delete to find the program and stop it, I found it and stopped it but when i tryed to go back online it say my proxy server was refusing connections. After a few hours i figured out how to fix my connection and have done several virus sweeps but they don't pick it up, They don't even detect it. I would really like something that's free and can get rid of this virus. TYIt completely made everything I click inert and said it was infected. I tryed some virus stuff from microsoft but they don't seem to work.I've been trying to reinstall Windows defender but it says i need to verify i have sufficient privileges to start system services. How the hell do i do that? I'm already the admin. How the hell do I respond to posts on this? And there just has to be a simpler way to get rid of this. The things you mentioned just gave me a giant headache.Ok, I'm trying a program called Malwarebytes. I told it to run everything. Guess i'll just wait and see how it turns out. more

Resolved Question: McAfee Internet Security Suite vs. Microsoft Security Essentials - which one is best for a new laptop?

I recently just got an Acer Aspire laptop as a gift with Windows 7 on it, and I want the best protection on it. I don't have the funds yet to pay for an anti-virus protection program, so McAfee came pre-installed on it for a 60 day trial period. I have read McAfee is not the best now, and was wondering if MSSE was pretty good to go ahead and install on it? If so, I will uninstall the McAfee and get this. I've also heard Avast and AVG, etc are other good free ones but i'm VERY cautious when it comes to putting stuff on my computers. 10 best for the best thorough answer! THANKS IN ADVANCE.also, will Security Essentials always be free? just incase i wait to let McAfee run it's trial period.. more

Resolved Question: How do I remove a virus (trojan horse) from my pc?

Ok, a couple of days ago my pc started trying to download some kind of fake 'anti virus' software, obviously this was something dodgy so I tried stopping it but to no avail. At the minute my anti virus software, Avast, will find the virus but not delete or repair the threat (which after scanning is listed as 'high' and a trojan horse), I originally had AVG but it did not get rid of the threat so I un-installed it to try Avast. I have also tried doing a system restore but this won't work either. The Windows security centre will not work, it asks me to start it but a box just appears saying 'security centre cannot be started'. My pc seems to be running ok but I know there is something lurking in the background! What should I do, is clearing the whole system and starting again my only option? I would rather not, but these free online security programs don't seem to be working! more

Resolved Question: McAfee is driving me insane with constant background and update scans - what is causing it?

I get McAfee as part of the package from my ISP. Please don't tell me to ditch it and get a free one because I cba! Much like Norton the PC becomes sluggish when doing a full system scan but apart from that it has been reasonably problem free. Until about 3 weeks ago... It started to scan for updates, download updates and do background scans repeatedly through the day. The start up scan (?) is making my PC unusable for about 15 minutes. I changed the settings to manual updates so at least I could postpone and install when convenient but there are that many it's pretty futile and it still hasn't stopped the slow start up. Does an anti virus programme really have updates every single day?! Prior to all this, I would be aware of one quick scan every day lasting only minutes. I have Googled it but I truly struggled to understand what all the techy forums were going on about it seemed ridiculously complex :( more

Voting Question: Laptop Has bad virus, unresponding, cant run anti-virus programs or internet, need to reinstall or reboot.?

My laptop has been hit hard with what I'm guessing are several viruses. When I start my computer it starts fine and normal but then i get all these "false" prompts to scan my computer from companies like "Security Tool" and "Security Scan" (that I've never heard of) and it asks me to use their program or whatever but i thought those were the virus programs itself so i kept clicking cancel. This laptop is only a mere 1 and 1/2 months old. I have AVG Free and when i try opening it to scan my computer the "Security Tools" program says there's a worm in AVG that wants to send my personal info to whatever it said after. When I try to open the internet to redownload AVG or even go on google it says stuff like "there's a virus in google toolbar" and for yahoo "this site is not recommended without using our program. And I keep clicking cancel and No but it's not looking so well. I did make Back-up Discs of my computer before but I've never done this. I just need what to and how to restart my computer for virus purposes, otherwise everything works fine but I get no search results for virus purposed computer fails. For Windows 7 what do i do to restart? And i dont mind losing any information i have on the computer because since it's new i dont have anything that must be kept. Thanks. EASY 10 POINTS more

Resolved Question: With the following set up, is my computer safe? In what order should install these programs?

My college's internet can apparently be screwy with Norton or McAfee anti-virus. With this in mind, I need to find other free ways to protect my computer. Along with safe browsing habits, will these programs keep my computer safe? Avast! Antivirus Malwarebytes Spywareblaster Comodo Firewall SuperAntiSpyware Is there anything else you would recommend? At the moment, I am running with Windows Vista firewall and McAfee antivirus. With this in mind, what would be the best way to install all these programs to optimize protection during the switch? more

Voting Question: AVG Anti-virus, moves my backup data to virus vault?

AVG Anti-Virus moves my computers own back-up data into the Virus vault. I didn't realize it for a long time though, till one day it moved one of my C++ Programming projects into the virus vault. It says that the directory doesn't exist anymore, because when the back-up hardware hub doesn't see a file in the folder, it deletes it. You can't create a folder and move a file because the hub removes a folder without a file in it. It's hard to explain, but this back-up hardware is very, very good. How do I get AVG(newest and free version) to stop putting my computers backup data in the virus vault? more

Resolved Question: Hey need a little more help. Security tool virus is still trippin on my pc.?

.Back story: I downloaded some game, got Security Tool virus and maybe others. Did some research, read I should download a security scan, then, malwarebytes, then antis-pyware, or try to manually remove the virus(es) or buy anti-spyware/removal like AVG and let them do it. Well first I tried downloading a scan and malwarebytes, but only after restarting my computer in safe mode was I able to run the programs. Then I did a system restore.????? And no sign of the virus but I wonder if u do that, does Security Tool reallly completely go away? and not show up disguised with its files. Anyway I did the first two steps,(wish I knew how to it manually do it) Now recently took my hp windows 7 desktop to geek sqaud (because of security tool,) They ran a free diognostics and said they found some viruses, and wanted me to pay 200 dollars for them to fix it. I said no cause I would like to fix it manually first, then if that don't work, buy good, fairly inexpensive security software with nice warranty/coverage/and support and that won't slow down my pc.But I also read I would have to Disguise/change the new securtiy program or files to prevent any viruses from detecting and blocking it? ls this neccasary? If so how do I it? (And will TREND MICRO ANTIVIRUS + ATISPYWARE CD work.) Hey need a little more help.THANK YOU! more

Resolved Question: Virus Scan Help!! Easy!!?

So, it is not really a virus problem. It a problem with running two anti- virus systems at once. So, I have McAfee, which I got for free because my dad's work gives it for free to employee's, but I just also downloaded Microsoft essentials anti-virus, which I hear is pretty good, and it is free. So my question is, would it reduce my computers performance if I ran both at the same time, i don't mean running their virus scans at the same time, i am just keep them running, they will have scheduled scans, but on different days, but will it still degrade performance if I just run the programs at "idle basically"? Oh yes: here is my computer specs. Windows 7 x64 bit 3.33 ghz core 2 duo e6600 4 gb ddr2 1066 mhz 32 mb cache 750 gb Seagate caviar green HDD nvidia gts 250 gpu Thanks! more

Resolved Question: can i get free malware/spyware?

I just recently found out that the reason I'm not able to navigate or go online with my laptop computer is because I have a bunch of crapware on it, somehow the anti-virus program got deleted and I can't go online to download a new program straight to the laptop so is there any way that I can get a free download of a good anti-malware/antispyware program on my home desktop and maybe save it to a disk and then download it to the laptop? I'm a full time student with no prospects of having any money anytime soon ( sept 14) or I would just buy software anybody have any ideas? All great tips thank you much appreciated, but the computer CAN NOT GO ONLINE!! Lol even in safe mode I can't establish a connection is there any way to save files from any of these programs on to a disk? the cd-rom drive is one of the few parts that are still workin, thanx= ) more

Resolved Question: What can i download for free off the internet to get a virus off my netbook?

the other day a pop-up screen came up on my netbook and it was connected to the internet but i wasnt sittin at it and when i sat down that pop-up screen had jus downloaded and a anti-virus software to my computer. but it is actually a virus, its called "Antivir Solution Pro" and its taken over my computer, it wont let me open the add/remove programs option on my computer something pops up and says its infected, the majority of the things i clock on that i have installed on my computer it wont open now because that screen comes up and says that its infected, i tried to get the AVG anti-virus earlier and it let me save it to my computer but wouldnt let me open and run the program because that "Antivir Solution Pro" says its infected.my original anti-virus was McAfee and it expired a few months back and i never renewed it,this new "Antivir Solution Pro" says its a demo version and the removal option has been disabled and it doesnt say how long the demo version is.it will also make websites come up like for viarga and adult websites which have never been looked at on this comuter so i know it has to be a virus. ive also did a search for the name of the program on my computer and it doesnt show up. so is there a way to get this off or do i need to take it somewhere and get it fixed?! i go to school online and it starts in couple weeks so i need it fixed soon! any feedback will help!thanks for the feedback.im goin to try to remove it cause when i download any thing to take it off for me it wont let me open it. im not very good and the tech part of computers so i hope i dont mess it up worse! thanks and does anyone know what this program is and why it came onto my computer? more
