Open Question: Is there anything I can download (ideally free) to make my computer run faster.?

My computer is just so slow. I've tried everything, full virus scan, de-frag, always have firewall on, always make sure anti virus is updated, and use a safe internet browser (fire fox). I also have over 3 quarters memory space left, so it's not as though I'm overloading it with programs etc. My computer says supposedly everything is fine after all the scans, however I know something just doesn't seem quite right. Even when I'm not on the internet it stills seems to be slower than it use to be. Do things like Windows Live Messenger and Java make it slower? And is there anything else I can do to make things run better other than doing a full system restore (or whatever it's called when you take it back to how it was when you first bought it). Thanks for any helps. How do you 'Run task manager'? I;ve just been on My Computer, right clicked Local Disc (C:) went to Properties and it says 37.6 GB used space, 83.6 GB free space, 121 GB capacity more

Open Question: what are some good free spyware doctor/removers?

About a week ago something created a password protected windows account names 3b02f. Have a feeling it is some type of spyware. I deleted the account, but 3 days later it created it again. I then did a system restore back a couple weeks before all of this happened. Still have yet to see it it worked or not, but today my windows 7 started saying to wasn't a legal copy (it is), so I installed windows again from scratch - all good. Then I downloaded stopzilla which said I had 15 viruses, but then I realised to get rid of them I'd have to pay for it, so I tried Ad-Aware, which is free and when I scanned, said that there were no viruses and my computer was fine. So, I'm hoping someone can recommend some other spyware removal programs (that are free) so I can double/triple check that theres nothing going on that shouldn't. I currently have NOD32 installed as anti virus protection, but the virus got through because I was trying to download some free photoshop brushes (so it's kind of my own fault) Any advice would be helpful! more

Open Question: Is AVG safe to download?

My parents just bought me another laptop last semester, and up until last month, it had a free Norton Security program on it. It has expired, and I do not want to renew the subscription. I had SPYSWEEPER on my other laptop, and to my knowledge, the computer never acquired any viruses and doesn't have any now. I don't have money to go out and buy that program right now. Somebody told me that AVG is free to download and its anti-virus protection. Is this true? I am in college, and the people in my IT department says it is nice to have. But I'm not sure...it was downloaded on my friend's computer after they fixed a virus, but then he got one again, even with the AVG. Does it work? Should I download it? Is it safe or is it a scam?? Thank you for your responses. And if it is safe, could someone provide the correct websites so that I don't go downloading the wrong thing? more

Resolved Question: Question about "Secure Logon" (CTRL + ALT + DELETE) and anti-malware programs....?

I have a Vista laptop, and I want to make it as secure as possible (I am so afraid to go on any sites other than things like my university's student webpage, wikipedia, and yahoo answers, etc. Even tmz.com I'm afraid of, LOL) because my old computer got infested with viruses and completely crashed, most likely due to my mother clicking on ads. Anyway, I want to know the purpose of the "Secure Logon" (CTRL + ALT + DELETE) please. My uni's computers make us do this... is there any advantage of doing it on my home laptop too? Also, as far as antimalwares go, which of these is the best: McAfee, Norton, ESET, Kapersky, Trend Micro, or Bit Defender? I'm talking about the full 'security suite' versions, i.e. with the firewalls, antispyware if available, etc., so not just the antiVIRUS. I don't really feel comfortable using the free ones.... Thanks so much! more

i was once deliberating on buying a separate anti-virus for my computer other than the one that came for free for i think 1 year? but the salesman said something that...bothered me. he said something like, let's say this year is 2010 and i buy a norton 2010 on 2011 it won't work anymore, is that true? so does that mean i really have to buy a new anti virus every year to keep my computer safe? hope i explained this right, thanks! more

Open Question: I cannot use Firefox or Windows Messenger on my Windows 7 but IE works fine. Any suggestions?

I recently tried to use a free Anti-Virus called Avast! and after installing Mozilla Firefox web browser along with Window Live Messenger stopped working. Both program open, but Firefox gets an error message that says "Unable to connect" as if there was no connection, and on Windows Live Messenger I get a 'Troubleshoot" pop-up. When I run the troubleshoot it says everything is running perfectly, but still when I try to sign in again, I just get the 'Troubleshoot' pop-up. I have perfect Internet connection and my Internet Explorer works perfectly. I have turned off Firewall, allowed the programs through my Anti-Virus, and even did a system restore 3 seperate times. Open Question: Is it better to buy computer protection or pirate?

First of all this is a re-posting of one of my questions that got reported, I appealed and it got reopened (so no this does not violate the guidelines) but I wasn't able to click the extend time button to allow for more answers, and now apparently it been deleted not sure why but the answers were terrible. Yes that's my question, Yes I am serous, No I am not promoting stealing that is still wrong, I just need some clarity on this matter, No I will not use another term then pirate, Why? Because it fits and nothing is really free, you always need to pay to get rid of the threats or all you can do is scan. not to mention the "Free" Anti-(insert w/e) are easily corrupted or I need 30 different programs that hardily work together just to be protected and they still fail at what they do. So is it better to buy computer protection or pirate? well the things I was considering was I would have to manually download newer versions of it just so I don't get infected or should I just pony up the cash to buy it, whatever the Anti-(it) is, and any other things that I would need to consider between the two. Now I am also looking to see if there is a better Anti-(Everything Basically) out there other then NIS (Norton Internet Security) Because in my experience Norton was cool at first but quickly became corrupted and actually put viruses on your computer, so I would Talk it down because of that, since then I hadn't trusted it, but with NIS 2009 and now NIS 2010 it seems like it really can do it all, I even constantly try to put Viruses on it in many different forms and I have had no problems at all. So if there is another hopefully cheaper (doubt it) Full Protection out there I wanna hear it.Thx Jim, See, i told you it isn't in violation of the Guidelines, 3 people reported me and im still here, i read the rules before i posted the frist one so can i get some straight answers please? This is an honest inquiry. "Norton sucks. And yes, your question DOES violate the guidelines and I DID report it as well." No it dose not, then why is my question still up? "Given that AVG Free is awesome and free, get bent, you slime. You already don't have to pay for it and you're going to steal it? What is WRONG with you. No, it DOES violate the guidelines. I'm reporting this again." Ok AVG Free maybe Awesome but it still got infiltrated and I nearly lost another computer to it so don't say its the best, no I'm not stealing something free obviously you didn't finish reading where I said "No I am not promoting stealing that is still wrong," but with in pirating I do include free Anti-(w/e) I never ruled them out they just never keep working, and again i am still here. more

Resolved Question: How can I get ride of this annoying program on my computer?

(I use windows vista) It's called "anti virus vista 2010 and it's really annoying. It keeps telling me my computer is infected, which it isn't. I don't have any fancy programs except Ad-Aware, malwarebyte anti-malware, and AVG free. I know this antivista thing is some sort of program that wants you to buy it, it won't let me click on the icon on the bottom right, and I can't find it anywhere on my computer except when it pops up telling me to purchase it. It says things like my system is hijacked, spyware is on my computer, and my privacy is being stolen. The pop ups for it are relentless and never ending. Restarting comp did nothing, and nothing came up in computer scans. more

Resolved Question: help with viruses, malware, adware and spyware and security programs?

[this is the part where i get confused...correct me if i'm wrong] MALWARE is a general term for any program that will harm or attack your computer, and under malware we have VIRUSES, ADWARE, SPYWARE which attacks the computer in different ways either via malicious programming, pop-up advertisements, programs disguised as safe programs etc. [so for security and protection i have....] malwarebytes anti malware installed which takes care of MALWARE then i also have AVG antivirus free edition which takes care of VIRUSES AND SPYWARE (which, in my understanding is under the general term malware which is already covered by MALWAREBYTES) [my questions.....] is there a redundancy or overlap in the purpose and function of these programs? can i delete one of them and still get 100% protection from all threats? can you suggest a protection scheme for my PC? Resolved Question: Virus issue - details below?

Hello folks. This is my issue. My laptop has a virus and now I cannot even operate it in safe mode to recover my files. My plan is to pull the HD and use an enclosure to connect to my backup PC so I can transfer my files. My question is which is the best antivirus/anti malware program/software to find and get rid of the problem on my HD. Pardon me if I didn't use the right words or programs, but I know I need something to get rid of the virus. Are there free versions I can find online? Also, what are the best antivirus, internet security, etc programs that I must have on my computer going forward, preferably free? Thanks for helping out! more

Resolved Question: Can backup and restoring help against Virus/Spyware/Malaware attack and if yes, How?

I have heard about PC users backing up and then restoring their PC stuff after a virus or spyware attack. For example, they format their hard disk if their antivirus is not able to remove the virus; but they know that the virus exists because its presence is felt because of its activities (although the anti virus may have failed to detect and remove that virus). And then they restore the backup which they might have made when their PC was virus free. So I wish to know the detailed procedure from experienced PC users using Windows Vista (because I use Windows Vista). First, I would like to know how to make a DVD +RW disk bootable so that in case of a virus attack I should be able to boot the PC using that disk. Second, how should I create a backup on a DVD +RW disk such that when it is restored it will restore all Windows Vista Settings (including program groups, etc.) as it was before the virus attack? (So that once the back up is restored my PC will be just the way it was before it was attacked by Virus or Spyware). Thirdly, can I make the backup on the same disk which had been made bootable by me or do I have to make backup (or Program Files and other user data) on a separate DVD +RW disk? Fourthly, how to reboot from the DVD+RW disk and restore backup without loading operating system on the Hard Disk which may have been attacked by a virus or spyware which may be loading itself everytime the system gets booted through Hard Disk? This I am asking because when one will reboot from DVD +RW one may not be able to use Window's standard Backup Restore feature that is available under 'Maintenance' group having its first item as 'Backup and Restore Center' which is available when we load full Windows Vista that gets loaded when system is booted from Hard Disk. more

Voting Question: How do I rid my hardrive and flash drives of the "autorun.inf" virus?

What kind of virus is this? Is it a trojan, worm, virus, or what even is the difference in these things? I think it is on my hardrive because whenever I plug in an SD card or flash drive the virus is automatically copied on to it. Running Virus Scan does not work; that was one of the first things that I tried (I have the latest up to date version of AVG Free). Resolved Question: The Virus that acst like an Anti Virus Solved?

My computer became infected with virus calld Anti virus 2009. This is pack with alot of little Nastys. It takes control of your computer and blocks the user pretty much from doing anything. Its very time consuming trying to fix.. You can do a boot disk recovery that will solve the problem.. I found the best way was to download Microsoft free anti virus and spyware. It free for 90 days. And it work like a champ. The only real problem is you have restart your computer go into the registry and disable the virus. This is only temporarily. Because once the computer reboots back up again it will be there. But once you download Microsoft free anti virus and spyware it taken out. So the is info on the web to tell you how turn off programs in the registry. You have to search for diabling the virus in your registry. Good Luck your going to need it. Its a real problem as you know. more

Resolved Question: good non-intrusive yet free antivirus program.?

Ok, so I had AVG Free for awhile, but got really pissed when i relised that i really had no control over it. Meaning that when it found something it thought was a virues(Like a keygen), it would do its thing and not let be involved in the removal process. I had no control over what files it was removing and what files it wans't. I downloaded malware bytes free version and that has been doing me well. though lately, for some reason, it has not been working.
