Free Anti Virus Software Symantec Questions asked

Resolved Question: is symantec antivirus good enough or will i need more?

i went to a website called "Ziddu.com" and the internet froze and all applications stopped working, then a virus protection that i did not even have installed came up and said i had some viruses and they will remove them for $50. thing is i already had a virus protection installed called symantec anti-virus and i scanned the whole computer and 2 viruses came up called "trojan.fakeav" then it multiplied and became 4. symantec said if i restart it will clean out the viruses. and when i did a full scan again it said there was no viruses. then after that i played counter-strike 1.6 and there were a lot of duplicate servers, and when i clicked one of them symantec said it found a "backdoor.trojan" so i cleaned it and then it removed the risks after cleaned. 2 days later my computer was working fine and then when i turned the screen off and came back to the computer 2 hours later it said it found another virus called "backdoor.trojan". and now today i did another full scan and left the computer alone and it said it found another "backdoor.trojan". someone lead me to a virus protection software that will protect me from viruses and spyware. if you guys know one that is free and works good, let me know. and if none of the free virus protections are any good someone lead me to a good virus/spyware protection that costs money. but let me know of the free one first. more

Resolved Question: Are there any free anti-virus for a Home Server?

I recently got a server from a teacher who had it for years. I'm not using it for business, or in a corporate environment, I took it mostly because we needed a second computer in the house. My plan had been to uninstall the anti-virus that was on the machine (Symantec) and put on Avira Free edition. I didn't find out that you can't use free software on a server until after I uninstalled Symantec. Does anyone know of any free "server edition" anti virus software? Or am I going to have to suck it up and start paying for protection? more

Resolved Question: Recently my computer has acquired some rather annoying glitches, please help!?

OK so recently my computer has been having a lot of problems. One of them is that at startup it will load windows and I can log in, but once I log in it takes several minutes for me to be able to do anything. I have AIM 6.0 and Microsoft Outlook load at startup, and I can't do anything until they finish loading. Whenever I put my cursor on the toolbar or the start button it just turns into the hourglass. However, even when I take these apps off of my startup it still takes a long time to allow me to do anything. My second, more annoying problem, is that my computer lags a lot when I play video games online, particularly Warcraft 3 but the problem is not limited to WC3. It also happens when I play any type of flash game. I had thought that it was my internet connection but I upgraded from 6Mbps to 16Mbps with no change. In addition I played a game offline and the gameplay was still extremely choppy and slow, and it did not settle down after a few minutes. I don't know what the problem could be. I have been using this computer to play this and other games for years with no problems and now all of a sudden it doesn't quite work. I have done a disk cleanup, a virus scan, a defrag, and as much of a registry clean as I could get with free registry fix software. I am also up to date with the latest windows software, if that matters. My computer is a Dell Latitude D820. It is about 3.5 years old. I use Symantec as my anti-virus software. So how can I fix these problems? Also, could installing Fedora 10 have caused any of these problems? more

Resolved Question: Free Anti-Virus Software as good or better than Symantec products?

Hello, I've heard that Symantec anti-virus products really slow down your PC, and I was wondering if there were any free anti-virus software programs which are just as safe and effective as, say, Symantec Anti-Virus Corporate edition, but wont drag my PC down. Could Symantec be slowing down my computer? What options do I have? Thanks in advance! more

Resolved Question: Windows XP problem. Please Help!?

I'm running Windows XP Home Edition Service Pack 3. I think I may have gotten some bad mojo, but I've beat the s#|t out of my computer with anti-virus: Malwarebytes' SUPERAntiSpyware Malicious Software Removal Tool Windows Defender AVG Free 8.5 Symantec Stinger Various Conficker Removal Tools I've ascertained that Conficker is not my problem. One unusual symptom still exists even though I believe everything is gone. Windows won't let me open a new, user-controlled shell, or open or edit Windows Batch files. When ever I try to open a Batch or a Prompt, it shuts out and Windows Explorer resets itself! Everything disappears and reappears almost as though logging on. It's very weird! And what's even more confusing is whenever this happens, items that I have recently moved on my desktop will return to their previous positions! It's very strange! Please!! If you have any ideas, let me know!! I use Command and Batch files frequently and it won't let me now! I don't know what to do. I've tried everything! If you know anything, or have any suggestions on how I can correct this issue, please tell me! Thanks, so much, in advance!! more

Resolved Question: How do we get rid of lots of Adware and is it a possible Trojan virus?

I have some programs on my computer which i use to try to find stuff... Ad-Aware SE Scan Results = NOTHING. Symantec AntiVirus Full Scan = NOTHING SUPERAntiSpyware Full Scan = Adware.Vundo Variant [5 items]/Rel and Rogue.Component/Trace [1 item] I have quarantined, deleted, rebooted and repeated these steps many times but every time I scan, there is always more.. :( A friend recommended I download AVG which is like free.avg.com. I downloaded this and am currently running scans with it as well. Also, is it bad to have AVG and Symantec Norton Antivirus at the same time?? Lastly, another rrecomended software is Malwarebyte's Anti-Malware (MBAM) which is supposedly good for getting rid of these problems. Can this run with other antivirus software? more

Resolved Question: Computer Help! Is it a virus or conficker?

Here's the story - I'll try to be as detailed as possible. Caution though, it is a lengthy explanation, so I apologize in advance, but I am desperate and paranoid here. Recently (within the past 4 or so hours) my Toshiba laptop (Windows XP) has been completely freaking out. It has had several freezes, 4-5 crashes, strange application requests, and other suspicious behavior. At the time, I had Zone Alarm, AVG Free, and a form of McAfee installed on my computer. Now, since its April 1st my first guess - Conficker. I used the worm info from Microsoft: http://www.microsoft.com/protect/computer/viruses/worms/conficker.mspx This morning everything was fine, and I didn't match any of the symptoms. But suddenly, I was unable to go to Microsoft Update, or run the Malicious Software removal tool (links on the page) - Two indications that your computer was infected with conficker. I ran the Windows Live OneCare Safety Scanner this morning with no results, but when I ran it again a few hours ago (when the suspicious behavior began) it would cause my computer to freeze up and force me to restart. I then downloaded a few more programs (Silverlight, Windows Live OneCare Trial) but that just seemed to cause more crashes, and Zone Alarm was catching a lot of strange programs trying to run (a bunch I have never heard of or installed). I removed both programs since. The weirdness continues - I was suddenly, without reason, able to access Microsoft Update and the Malicious Software removal tool. I ran both; The Update downloaded a few things, but the Microsoft Genuine Advantage installer crashed. The Mal. Software removal tool also crashed, forcing another reboot. I then found this link: http://www.symantec.com/norton/theme.jsp?themeid=conficker_worm&inid=us_ghp_link_conficker_worm I downloaded the Conficker removal tool patch from the site (which is odd, since conficker disables downloaded patches like this), ran it, but the computer crashed again. I then downloaded the 15day trial of Norton AntiVirus 2009, and initiated the scan; Its been scanning for a while now, still no infections have been caught. So I'm at a total loss here; Before, my computer was totally freaking out, crashing every 10 minutes. Now it seems ok, but I want to be absolutely sure. Earlier I couldn't access any anti-worm links, but now I can. What is going on? Is it conficker? Is it just a common virus (which raises the question why AVG didn't pick it up)? Or is it nothing? Please help! I will edit this later with details after the norton scan has finished. Thanks for your help.Ok, responses: @James the Nerd: Its running no CPU =/ @hicollin: I'm trying to avoid formatting if possible... @Joe k: Link is dead; Besides, I don't trust mediafire downloads. Official sites only. @Hottie: I tried that one, it found nothing this morning, and crashed it twice later =/ @Tommyc555: Thanks for being a douche. UPDATE: My computer has been rather normal recently. Norton Antivirus scanned, and came up with nothing. I'm running the conficker patch again, and I will try the scanner Hottie linked one more time after that. The mystery just deepends; It seemed like virus/spyware, but Norton came up with nothing, and it hasn't done anything weird since. Am I in the clear, or what? What should I do? Thanks for all the responses (except Tommyc555's) so far, I really appreciate it guys. more

ok, i heard on my news that tomorrow ( april fools day) a computer "worm" is supposed to be going around and i have a pc, and the virus scanners i have are AVG free virus scanner, spybot search and destroy malware and spyware remover, and windows defender and firewall. the ones that have expired and cost money are symantec and norton anti virus scanners. i dont have money to use on those two, so they are currently not being used. if anyone knows of any FREE anti virus scanners for windows vista that i can download and will protect my computer and its contents for as long as possible, then that would be awsome. thanks! more

Resolved Question: Computer security, Virus/Spy/Root/Logger/etc?

(USING A WINDOWS VISTA!) Is there any free software out there such as- Anti logger- http://www.zemana.com/list/list.asp?ktgr_id=354 Anti root kit- An anti root kit scanner, that actually doesn't turn your computer to a blue or black screen? I've been to download.com reading how they do that, and the other part that they've actually gotten a virus from the program. Thus the program being adware, and/or the user needing to re install their OS. Anti virus A friend was giving me- http://www.symantec.com/business/products/family.jsp?familyid=endpointsecurity&inid=us_bizbanner_hero4_endpoint_security For home use, though that actually made Norton? I spose I shouldn't get my hopes up for that program, should I? It was going to replace my AVG. So, Could you suggest an anti-virus? I don't believe in- Norton Avast McAfee Spyware- I am using SpyBot S&D <---- should I keep this? I rly like it in my opinion. Web shield- And I'm in need for a good web security program! Firewall- Using basic windows firewall- is there a way better one than windows? Thank you all!. -Mark more

Resolved Question: Which anti virus software should I install when having 224MB space of RAM?

I installed and tried many softwares, like: Norton (symantec), AVG Free 8.0 and Avira Personal. Norton was out of trial version so I uninstalled it. I had AVG and it used to work fine. But my friend suggested to try a better one according to my RAM space, Avira Personal. Now whenever I use it, my computer lags while playing games. So I uninstalled it too. Now which software should I install according to my RAM space? --- Thanks. more

Resolved Question: Computer antivirus and malware?

Ok, currently, I run AVG Free Edition 7.5 Anti Virus. I am guessing I just have windows firewall. Any advice on the best antivirus/malware spyware/firewall software I can download or have free to try? more

Resolved Question: I have a new virus, any suggestions?

Anyone that has had a type of Vundo before will know that they are a pain, however none of the security software can seem to fix this one. It may be a new type :-( I've installed just about all that I know and none of them can find anything. I've installed: - Symantec Anti-Virus - AVG Anti-Virus - Spybot S&D - Adaware I have even tried two special user made programs made just for removing the Vundo type viruses, and still - nothing! Nothing is picking it up! Although Spybot did detect two "dll"'s but that was it, I still have my problems. The Vundo viruses apparently hijack your browser, display pop ups and download more viruses - I am getting all this! This only thing that is really bugging me about this is that when I am not in safe more, my Windows Vista blue screens (it has only started this since i got the virus) In safe mode with networking, the browser still gets redirected, leaving me to believe that its running in safe mode too! This would mean that is has replaced a system file - explaining the blue screens! Sorry for the long explanation... P.S. I want advice on new programs I could try to remove it with, or anything else that might help. Please just DONT tell me to format my PC as this is out of the question! Repair also does not work as I have tried... Thanks If you think you can help me, feel free to add me on MSN, my Addy is feneck@hotmail.com thanks more

Resolved Question: Remove Norton Anti-Virus?

Ok I have read all the other documentation in regard to removing Norton Anti Virus Symantec from my computer, when the free trial ran out I simply shut it off and installed AVG, but recently I have started getting pop ups saying that it is totally out of date and to buy the New Norton package. I never used it in the time i had it cause i didnt have internet access at the time. I have 2 main concerns.. 1. Norton offers an intrusion detector and a pop up regarding the use of a software accessing the internet for that reason alone I like it, but to be honest all the request for internet access from the software is from legit sources like AVG, Firefox, iTunes, etc. However they still pop up even though when i am confident i check the always use this option box. What would i use to protect against intrusions without it? 2. Will uninstalling Norton Symantec affect my Firewall, could someone give me some details in regard to firewall, about, where, system. and would it be affected. ThanksOh yeah, i have a Dell Inspiron 6000Will removal affect my firewall????? more
