I've recently wiped my laptop clean back to it's orignal state, and I'm currently covered by the Norton Internet Security, but I know that won't last long. Before wiping my laptop, I was using Avast Antivirus for virus protection and Malwarebytes for malware protection. I'll likely install those again unless there are better free online antivirus and antimalware programs. which would you recommend? I have Norton & Malwarebytes that I use to de-bug my computer. But lately I have been getting an excessive amount of ads. They're on the top of my webpages, on both sides, and youtube is just surrounded. There are also 10+ words per page that are underlined and link to a spam website of sorts. I have ran deep scans on both anti virus programs, and they come up with nothing besides tracking cookies. I am at a loss of what to do! The ads keep getting worse and worse. It started out with one at the top and now they are everywhere. Do I have an ad virus of sorts? Help please! Tried everything to fix it, HELP!?
Ok so I was on the internet, minding my own business when all the sudden my laptop closes all of the programs I had open and then restarted itself. At first I just thought it was updating my computer or something but then when it restarted my computer started playing like an commercial ad in the background but nothing was open. Then the screen when blue and shut itself off. Then I went back on in normal settings and ran norton anti-virus, it found some stuff and so I had it removed, praying that would be the solution, but when I restarted it the ads were still there. Then I gave it to my sister to work with, since shes removed viruses from her own computer successfully before, and she downloaded norton power eraser and ran a scan, finding more infected files and deleting them. BUT THE ADS STILL PLAYED! So finally I gave it to my dad and he took it to his office and tried to fix it but was unsuccessful as well. I am currently using Norton Internet Security, and I my sister bought a 3 computer protection of Norton 360. I'm not sure if Norton is actually good or bad, because I see lovers and haters everywhere. Should I feel safe using Norton and Norton Power Eraser? I feel like my computer is a bit slow, so I may be infected or whatever. Norton only detects tracking cookies for me, so I can't be sure if there is a virus and Norton can't find it, or I just don't have one. I heard that Norton is a "resource hog", so that may just be it. So bottom line, should I feel safe using Norton and Norton Power Eraser? Thanks so much! :)) moreResolved Question: Is windows defender sufficient protection for my computer?
I have it installed on my windows 8 computer but I'm not sure if it is good enough? I'm not aware that I undertake any high-risk activities on the internet.. Just the usual..facebook, twitter, wikipedia etc. And I watch the occasional bit of tv online, though I try not to! (Is this dangerous?) I'd rather not pay for anything though because I'm really no computer whiz and my computer is mainly just used for word and the internet. Also, if defender is good enough, should I join Microsoft Active Protection Service and at which level? Thank you. :)Someone mentioned pop-up and ad blockers. Where do I get a good, free one of these from? Thanks again.Ok, and another bit to add! Everyone's saying that defender is really bad which I had heard about the old version, BUT, I have windows 8 so therefore the newest version of defender which guards against malware etc. Do you still think that it's bad? :SOH, and I use google chrome if that helps? Ok so I was using my laptop for like a day (doing coursework etc) and when I was about to go out to the pub I closed the lid to shut down the laptop. Just as i did so, I heard a wierd dialing sound and also what sounded like someone with a microphone moving around (you know, the sort of noises you hear on skype and xbox live when someone is moving the microphone next to their face and it makes clicking noises and things). This spooked me quite alot, because it also didn't turn off straight away. I unplugged the ethernet cable and went out trying not to worry. When I got back I turned it back on and when the log in screen appeared and I typed in the password, i soon heard some one say "awwhhh yeeeeahhh" and some more distortion. So i was even more freaked out. I haven't heard anything since. No new programmes seem to have been installed and as far as i can tell nothing's been deleted. It also wasn't pop-ups or ads from left open tabs. And I have norton anti virus software which is generally pretty good at stopping stuff like this. WHATS GOING ON!? have I been hacked. If so, what can I do to protect myself?! moreResolved Question: Malwarebytes and Windows Defender.....?
Windows Defender which is pre-installed on my Win 8 computer was activated and running as my anti-virus when my Norton expired. Windows Defender picked up a Virus. Virus is Rogue:Win32/FakeRean. The virus in currently in quarantine with the option to remove it. I have not removed it due to the fact I've heard sometimes it wont work and will attach elsewhere. It was recommended to download Malwarebytes and remove it through this program. I just downloaded Malwarebytes and ran a full scan. It didn't pick anything up. It said no threats detected. I'm confused at this point. Does anyone know what my next move should be? I do think there is a virus on my computer as it has been doing odd things in the last few weeks that it never did before. I am concerned that if I don't remove this quickly it will ruin my entire hard drive. if I choose to remove through Windows Defender will it work? Why didn't Malwarebytes pick up this virus? Hello, I just took my computer to be fixed and I am very very happy with how fast it is now and how clean it feels, I found a really great and reliable fix-it guy in my area. However, I forgot to tell him something before I dropped it off. 1) I wanted to save my desktop background picture because it's one of a kind and I could not find it anywhere on the computer since I got it but he erased my OP so does that mean, the picture is gone forever? 2) He uninstalled Norton (which comes with my CenturyLink Subscription) but my guess is he replaced it with something else. Should I leave that be? I kinda miss Norton though. Plus I love just being able to click on the ICON down below when I want to scan. 3) I do not know what anti-virus software I have now and how to do a scan? 4) How do I know if my firewall is connected? I noticed for the past 2 days when I'm typing a word, there is like a pause before it appears. Then, I also notice that the scroll bar is slow when after I try to move it up or down, like I too have to wait for it to move? I've never ever had this problem before. The only place I don't have any problems is when I'm typing an e-mail from Windows Live Mail. It all types out smooth as I type along. Okay so I have a Pavilion g6 Laptop. I got it around New Years. It came with a three month free Norton security, but that ran out, I panicked and randomly downloaded AVG Anti Virus which had a free 30 day trial just as a temporary thing, and now that runs out tomorrow. I've been advised to use the free windows protection 'Windows Defender' which is apparently already installed onto this as my laptops Windows 8.. But when I click on it after searching it on the computer, it comes up with 'Windows Defender has been turned off and isn't monitoring your computer. If you're using another app to check for malicious or unwanted software, Use Action Centre to check that apps status' .. Where do I go from here? I'm quite good with technology so don't talk to me like I'm an 80 year old.. Although try and make it half simple. Thanks :D moreResolved Question: Kapersky PURE 3.0 and Incompatible Software?!?
OK, whenever I want to install the 30 day trial of the Kapersky PURE 3.0, it starts to install, then it says, "You are advised to remove the incompatible software for proper performance of Kapersky PURE 3.0" And then it has Norton Internet Security and Webroot SecureAnywhere, which I definitely do NOT wanna uninstall. And then, when I click Skip, it gives me a warning that says, "Are you sure you wanna keep incompatible software on your computer? Keeping the incompatible software may result in incorrect performance of some software on your computer and of the operating system. In this case your computer protection and proper performance of the installed application are not guaranteed." And it scares me to click "Keep" because I'm afraid something will happen to my computer. I don't wanna install my other security software though. Has anyone ever been in this situation before. Can someone recommend to me what I should do? Thanks in advance. moreResolved Question: Corrupt Program Files (x86) Folder?
Every time I install a new program, by default, the root folder is saved in my "C:\Program Files (x86)" folder... The program works fine for a while, but later (usually after reboot) the shortcuts for opening the program displays the message: "the item referred to by this shortcut cannot be accessed. You may not have the appropriate permissions" So then I go to the root folder of the program and find I cannot access it before using this: security tab > continue > and selecting the "Administrators" option (which the error message refers me to) ..and even then, each and every subfolder requires the same action to be opened and ALL the files inside simply cannot open (there isn't another option to 'securely access' them).. I have tried creating another "Program Files" folder in my secondary built-in HDD and installing some programs' root folders in it.. and it WORKS PERFECTLY.. My main issue at the moment is that Java is giving this error in the "Program Files (x86)" folder (which means that some games and other programs that need it to function, cannot work), but during the installation process it does not prompt me where to install the root folder, so my fix can't work here... I have even tried creating a whole new administrator account on my pc (and deleting the old one), but this problem persists. So, is there any way to 'un-corrupt' my Program Files (x86) folder? Is there any way to install Java to my custom Program Files folder? Note: Over a long period of time I have tried the following programs to check for malware and such.. - Norton 360 (full paid) [uninstalled] - AVG Free [currently active] (NO, I DO NOT HAVE 2 ANTI-VIRUSES INSTALLED) - Spybot - Search & Destroy [installed] - Malwarebytes [installed] - CCleaner [installed] Laptop Specs: -HP Pavilion dv7 Notebook PC -Rating: 5.9 -Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-2670QM CPU @ 2.20GHz- -8.00 GB RAM -64-bit Operating System -Windows 7 Home Premium moreResolved Question: need help having pc problems?

It's annoying me. Whenever I open any of my folders, or even going into my computer, windows explorer keeps crashing and restarting, closing all my folder tabs and making me restart what I was doing. I have Norton installed, but I am not willing to uninstall as I do not have any other anti-virus program that I am familiar with. I had Norton installed on my last laptop, and it never did this. I have heard that it could be corrupt files, but how am I suppose to delete them if I can't get in my folders, and if it's with every single thing. Seriously. I have a two-week old laptop and each and every question (no matter how big or small), I'm told the so-called solution is to perform a system refresh/re-install Windows 8..? I don't get it. I mean, how many times is one supposed to do a system refresh..? So far, it's been 4 X's each week. I have a (seemingly) simple question re: the fingerprint reader and I'm told to do a another refresh? It's time consuming. Even when one has everything on an external hard drive, the start-up process is lengthy. I have to repeatedly un-install the trial version of Norton anti-virus every time I refresh..! There has to be a simpler solution. Isn't there? I really do appreciate that. But the fact is that I've already spoken to hp tech support and (again) they suggested a(nother) refresh. At this point I don't know why I'm even revisiting the refresh because I have this sick feeling that this is going to be the story of my life as far as Windows 8. I'll be dead honest, I'm downloading porn currently (in an .mkv file if that means anything) and I'm wondering which would be better for scanning. I've downloaded Avast before, but my computer crashed because a virus fought back, so I rebooted my comp. Norton, on the other hand, has only found cookies ever since. Any help is appreciated, thanks. moreResolved Question: How do I find out what virus my computer has?
I have a virus or something on my laptop. Even though I have the latest Norton running, I think it happened when I downloaded something that looked like an update for Adobe Reader. It installed several things on my computer which I removed (stupid toolbars and other stuff), but I know there's something still lurking; I keep getting pop-ups and my homepage keeps changing itself to www.aol.com/?mtmhp=hyplogusaolp00000020. I obviously would like to get rid of it. Norton scan cant seem to find it. How do I identify and remove whatever is causing this? And no, I cant do a restore, because I never set my backups when I got the new 'top. Please help! moreResolved Question: HELP! Could I have a virus on my laptop?
I accidentally downloaded an exe file. I deleted it instantly and did not open it, but I'm freaking out. Could I have a virus? Is it possible for malware to install itself without me actually double clicking on the file? I've done full system scans with both malware bytes and norton 360 and nothing has come up, but they've never been reliable for me. Is there an expert out there who knows the answer to my question? moreResolved Question: My laptop keeps logging and shutting off and I don't know what to do?
It started a few days ago. I was using it normally by going online and it just shutoff. Then whenever I turned it on, it logs off and shuts off after two minutes. My cousin took it to Best Buy yesterday and it worked perfectly over there. They looked through files and everything. It wouldn't shut off or anything. The guys there said that the computer was fine and didn't have a virus. Then they put a disk in to clean up the laptop's files a bit or something they said was jammed. When she brought it back home it stopped working properly again. I just don't get it. It works fine at Best Buy but stops working at home? I took the batteries out for two minutes and put it back in and it still would log off and shut down. I don't know what to do. I don't have an anti-virus program on it. I was thinking of getting it fixed first and then getting Norton. moreResolved Question: Need help installing windows xp?
