Im now PC and I have used Macs for about 8 years and same time with PCs so I am pretty unbiased since I have had experience with both! so here is why I love PC (sorry its kind of just a randomly compiled list): PC makers use the newest processors You can customize PCs a TON which you can't do on macs You get to choose whatever software you want and it will run smoothly PCs are good for Graphic Artists (ex. Dreamworks Animation uses them) PCs price is much less inexpensive for a better running product (in my opinion) PCs can also run on OS X(Macs system) because they have the ability to support any options the user wants Users expect that macs are safe from viruses but infact they can bypass the one-program anti-virus system whereas in PCs you can personalize and get whatever anti-virus program you want/need for your computer. Resolved Question: Is there any real point in using linux over windows, apart from being able to peek under the hood?

I appreciate that some people like to hack around "under the hood" of their operating system and see what's there. I don't really see why anyone would be interested or able to understand how to do that unless they were a computer scientist or programmer. I mean the home user. Ever since Windows XP, Windows has run fine and stable for me. It doesn't crash like Windows ME and 95/98 would all the time. Windows has to be secure, otherwise multi-million dollar companies wouldn't be using it. With proper precautions, continually running anti-virus package etc., I would say that linux would be a riskier option security-wise as it might take much longer before a virus is found there. Windows has so much more software, everything is so easy to run and use in it (unless you want it to be harder with more functionality). Everything linux has, windows has more of and it is wayyyy easier to install it. more

Resolved Question: Dell Latitude D610 Problems?

I own a Dell Latitude D610, 1MB Ram, 80Gb HD, Windows XP Home OS. Sometime ago I began having some annoying problems that I would now like to repair: 1.) On startup the message “ Broadcom ASF is not able to initialize. The program is busy” sometimes appears. I am using a wireless connection for internet. 2.) When I press ‘cntl, alt, delete’ a CPU usage bar chart and history graph appear instead of the normal task menu. 3.) Without fail, when I put the computer in standby mode and then later open the active desk top the mouse becomes sluggish, and the CPU usage bar graph show 88 – 95% of CPU usage with only the desk top open. 4.) Occasionally, upon startup, I will be warned that my firewall is turned off. 5.) The startup is frustratingly slow, but I need guidance on what I can eliminate from the startup menu. 6.) I religiously run Spybot S&D weekly, but it doesn’t indicate that there was any malware, viruses, etc. present. Use Avast Free Edition anti-virus software. 7.) I periodically use C-Cleaner, after I have compressed and defragged all my files. If anyone out there can help me get things squared away I will be most appreciative. more

Resolved Question: How to lower CPU usage from 100% and get computer running quick again?

I'm running windows vista on my toshiba satellite. I'm not a pro at processors and what not so that is all I can say about my system. My little CPU gauge on my sidebar is reading 100% all of the time and my highest processes keep switching positions with one another between system idle, iexplorer.exe, svchost, my anti-virus software which is avast, and McciTrayApp. The highest any of these peak is usually in the range of 50-95. My computer is running slower and my anti-virus is up to date. Thanks for any help. more

I have been tinkering around with computers since my father brought in 3 old windows 95 desktops that didn't and Frankensteined them to make one. Years have passed since then and now knowing a lot about the hardware of computers i still lack in the area of the software part. I'm not an idiot, I do know how keep my computer secure (i.e anonymous proxies, firewalls, anti virus, etc), but I have always kept the mentality that there is always a bigger, badder fish on the net. I'm not hacker- curious, but I want to have a hacker's awareness. The only problem I have with this is I have a life unlike a lot of hackers, I work a twelve-hour job and have a family and I don't have the time or money to buy and read every piece of literature for a new programing language, is there a crash course or a blog-site of some-sort for people like me that can give me the knowledge that most average hackers have without putting a lot of attention on me or raise any red flags (big-brother's always watching)? more

Resolved Question: What is going on with my computer? VIRUS AND MALWARE! HELP!?

I've only been using my laptop for general purposes like ebay, imdb, wikipedia when all of a sudden, yellow bars on the bottom including a siren sound start making noises and I kept getting red pop ups every other second. One says "Windows Security alert- windows reports that computer is infected.." then a bigger one shows that says whether I want to stop the virus or stop the block. IF I do click to stop the virus, it would show a bigger bo telling me to pay $49.95 for a 3-months anti-virus software....at the same time, I've been trying my best to download AVG, Norton, Avira and McAfee but after the pre-download is done, it wouldn't go through--> keeps saying "this file is infected, download Antivirus system pro." also, another browser with the site "porno.org" and "viagra.com" would start popping up!... How do I stop this? I've lost my recovery disk and i sure won't buy the antivirus particularly since I'll have to pay via creditcard...especially that this laptop is infected.... WHAT SHOULD I DO? I don't know where my recovery disks are...anyway to recover from this? No money or time for technician now... more

Voting Question: Linksys WIreless-G PCI Adapter not connecting to internet - 40bits or 104bits error message?

I've got quite a problem with my computer not being able to connect to the internet. Here's the story: Purchased a desktop PC from Gateway back in 2000. It came equipped w/ WIndows ME. Around 2004 I upgraded to WIndows XP Home Edition and installed a Linksys WIreless-G PCI Adapter withSpeedbooster. Everything had been working peachy until about 2 months ago when I got a virus and used Malwarebytes Anti-Malware to remove the virus. In turn, the program deleted some drivers I needed, so i had to reinstall Windows ME & the XP upgrade. The system was wiped clean so i should have no problems installing my wireless adapter, but my computer wouldnt recognize the install disk. I read up on what the problem could be, and I was given the advice to right-click on the setup.exe file, then select to make compatible with WIndows 95. Did that, and the disk was recognized so i began install. So i installed the Linksys software, but when i select my wireless location and type in the password, it says the following: Network Password needs to be 40bits or 104bit depending on your network configuration. This can be entered as 5 or 13 ascii characters or 10 or 26 hexadecimal characters. What does that even mean?!?! And why am i recieving this warning now, and not before?? I've tried following a bunch of different directions from online tech forums, but nothing seems to be working out for me. :( I've also heard to try to enter only 5 characters of my password. This begins to connect to the internet, but then it says that the Wireless adapter is not connected. Even when go into Add/Remove programs, it confirms that the adapter is connected and working. Resolved Question: Why is the computer still slower + weird after Kaspersky supposedly deleted a trojan?

Hi, I've never used any type of antiVirus or antiSpyware software before so I'm a newbie with this stuff. I stupidedly ran a bogus exe file last night and ended up with a Win32.Agent.cfqz. I also found jestertb.dll, sys1.dll and sys2.dll adwares on my computer. The trojan itself had programs crash frequently, make the computer slow like it was '95 again or something, and my dual second monitor that runs with a usb adapter goes black for 1-2 seconds randomly. Kaspersky said the trojan was in my Flock cache. So I first had it delete it and then wiped private data clean through Flock. Compared to the time the trojan was around, the computer is much better, but it's still worse than it was two days ago. In the two hours I've used the computer since the trojan has been gone, the screen has flickered twice. I've had this dual monitor for a month and it never flickered before so I'm positive the trojan or adware caused it. Also twice when I clicked on the start menu, it would freeze for 5 or 10 seconds. Flock also became real slow with 5 tabs relatively quickly...I usually have 10ish tabs on for a few hours before the RAM usage slows it down. What should I do? I've been looking on how to wipe all temporary files and internet files. Webroot Window Washer seems to have the best reviews but I thought I'd ask here before throwing down $20. Also should I have a second antispyware and antivirus software? I used the SUPERAntiSpyware free version and a paid copy of Kaspersky. I wouldn't mind spend around $25 or so for an antispyware software but I'd rather not buy a second anti-virus (I'm poor :P). Sorry if I wrote too much I'm just a bit annoyed right now, but seriously thanks to anyone who takes the time to help.Also I just noticed in the logs that Kaspersky automatically deleted a trojan downloader called Trojan-Downloader.Win32.Delf.fwe. Ok I know that this question has been asked a Billion times but I need help and this one is a bit different. I have been with windows since Windows 95 and I can personally vouch that it is an innovative contraption. Performance wise my personally favorite would have to be 2000 (no seriously, I had no anti-virus software and I never once got a virus) but XP is good to as it's my second favorite. I have used Vista, its not as bad as everyone says it is but it's not as good as the money that I spent to upgrade from XP to it and then throw it out the window (metaphorically of course)(Glad I bough Home Premium instead of Ultimate). So I recently discovered from my friend that Windows is releasing 7 and that my friend had downloaded the Beta from there website. It was pretty good (fastest startup on a PC I have ever seen in a while, my laptop starts up in 48 seconds), and it loaded up fast. But I also heard Mac is coming out with Snow Leopard which is improving on performance(Me likey). And the regular Leopard is good as well on performance and eye-candy. So which one do you think will be better for ease of use with similar specs (i.e. faster start-up, least program crashes, performance of regular program, etc). more

Resolved Question: HELP!!! I thought I was downloading & installing an update to my Windows XP?

but what I actually downloaded was an anti virus software. Once it was installed, the program ran then told me that there were issues that needed to be addressed. Yeah, I can do that, right after I pay them $39.95. Well, I have AVG, I don't need another software. So I tried to uninstall it. NO-GO! Every time it tells me that there was a problem and the program has to shut down. I even tried it through CCCleaner & through my add/remove software. Still NO-GO! Also, my desktop background is this ugly warning that I need to install and run a spyware program. That all happened yesterday. This morning I start up the computer, and the only thing I could get on my desktop is that ugly warning, so I went into my task manager & started my web browser so that I can post this question. HOW DO I FIX THIS?????I guess I wasn't clear. The ONLY thing on my desktop is that warning. No icons, no start button, NOTHING. I've been using System Mechanic since V5 and it kept my oldass HP from 2001 running until just a few days ago! (And I think that was incompetent USAGE by my business partner, not the computer itself.) This is the ONLY software that I have ever PAID FOR each and every upgrade. Oh, god, help me, help me, please help me! Okay, so here's the issue: I have a Dell Inspiron E1505 Notebook computer, Windows XP Professional Operating System. My monitor has got these black margins lately, and won't allow my cursor into them. (Note: This actually happened to an old family computer that was running Windows 95 after... well, doing something similar to what got me in the mess this time – you'd think I'd learn…. Oh, Mum’s going to kill me) I accidentally (Yes, /accidentally/) downloaded what was called a 'full version' of the game Risk (C), which was really a one hour free trial of the game, while trying to play the little version of it online. I decided that since I had got this thing and hadn't noticed it was downloading in time to cancel the action, I might as well try it out - so I did. I opened it, read the rules, and kind of half played it while really giving my attention to other matters. Because of my inattentiveness and my poor skills, I did loose the game against the computer, right as the trial time ran out. (Or at least, I assume it was coincidental timing - you'll see.) Now, the screen froze up (right as my last little man went up in smoke, no less) for a bit, and I panicked - My mother /just/ gave me this computer after she got a new one (her software was out of date for the things she needs for her job). Forgetting all about Ctrl-Alt-Delete, I closed the lid and opened it a moment after (this sometimes works) and repeated it a few times, but there was no change. Then I remembered Ctrl-Alt-Delete and ended the programme. I think the game was just overwhelmed with the work it was trying to do, as it was supposed to close itself and open an advert (because the time ran out) and return to the main menu (because I lost) at the same time. After I terminated the programme, a new window opened with the usual offer to buy the game and play it whenever you please (of course, I closed that, too) but there were still the black margins that you get with those games (you know, because otherwise the pixels would be stretched to fit), along with that over-enhanced look. Now, I've restarted and shut down about a million times, and there has been no change. I want to get rid of this. Please tell me how! I did un-install and delete the files that were installed. You should probably know that I just started using this computer again /TODAY/ after not using it for... I don't even remember, 2-4 weeks. The charger was broken, I had to order a new one. Er - right. Well, I use Norton Anti-virus software for internet protection and firewalls and security and things. When I finally was re-united with my only connection to the outside world, the Norton programme was going berserk, and I was only trying to make sure the charger worked, but I ended up sitting there for over an hour trying to sort out the mess. I /think/ this was because my brother messed around with the Norton settings (thank you for that, it made the thing work!) to enable file transfers to my mother's new computer, but I can't be sure. So, there could have been plenty of things wrong with it without my knowledge. So, what do I do? /Can/ I fix this?! Oh, god, please tell me I can fix this?! Please, please, please help me fix this! I just really want these things to be gone - they're messing up everything, and all of my programmes look strange and oddly distorted because I'm still stuck with compressed images and an overly-enhanced quality. Resolved Question: What are solutions for a CPU suddenly shutting down? I vacuumed back vents, placed a cooling fan in front.?

We've had very hot, humid weather, 95-100 degrees, in the region over past several days, removed CPU from desk cubicle and sat out in open on a wooden folding tray with fan blowing, medium strength, directly on to front of CPU, so it may have been a heat issue (?). I also ran the Google Pack software bundle that included anti-virus and anti-spyware. I also changed my password before shutting down. I have an older model, Compaq Presario, model 4409CL CPU, running Windows XP Home edition operating system. No shutdowns after cooling off and Google Pack installation for the following 3-4 hours, but not sure if this is all enough. Still blowing fan on CPU. Never had this issue before. ISP checked my connections and ensured that all connections were fine, so not an internet issue. No other electrical items went out at those times, just the CPU. HELP!! (Thanks!!) more

Well i have Windows XP. And my computer was working fine. Then it started getting MAJOR slow. I only got it last year. One day I came down to use my computer, and instead of looking like windows xp. How everything was all bubbly and stuff, it started looking like windows 95. Everything was gray and square. It wouldn't let me play music, or go on the internet or anything like that. My computers been crashing to. I don't even do anything and it crashes. Can you please help me? I'm on my dads computer but i seriously need my own. Any help please? Thank you so much. I tried to run anti-virus software, and I ran scans and it said I had no errors. I did disk refragments. Any help? This always happens to me. Resolved Question: Purchased a second-hand PC, but Windows XP installed is not a pukka version, what to do?

I bought a used PC on ebay a few weeks ago, I've been really happy with it, but yesterday tried to get the latest version of Windows Media Player, and it wouldn't install, saying my version of Windows XP was not genuine. This is annoying, Microsoft offered to legitimize the version I have for £95 (more than I paid for the PC). My question is, how much of a problem is it not having a pukka version of XP Pro? I can't install any updates for any Windows products, but is this the end of the world? I have anti virus and firewall software, so I should be ok security wise right? more
