We are still friends and I have never seen a happier woman than her. She tells me that Muslim women are not what we see in the media. I myself have traveled to Kuwait, Malaysia, and Turkey and none of those Muslim countries are oppresive to women and none of them were terrorist supporters. Whenever the media reveals unconscionable stories about honour killings, genital mutilation, forced marriage, the punishment of rape victims, women being confined to their homes or women being denied education they are revealing a tale of men and women who are ignorant about the status of women in Islam. Please learn that al-Qaeda is not truly a Muslim group. 300 Muslims were killed in the September 11 attacks. Al-Qaeda has killed more Muslims than any other religious group because true Muslims know that what al-Qaeda does is against Islam. There are thousands of Muslim Americans serving in the U.S. Military to help protect this country. New York's Mayor Bloomberg and many other Jewish groups and others along with the Muslim Americans are hoping that by building this Islamic community center which includes a pool will help clear misconceptions about Islam and Muslims. They are hoping that when people come to this community center they will learn the difference between true Islam and what Al-Qaeda calls Islam. You can call Ground Zero sacred ground but why would you call an old Burlington Coat Factory that is two blocks away from it sacred ground? That old Burlington Coat Factory is where the mosque is going to be. I have been to Malaysia and Turkey and both of those Muslim countries allow Christians to unquestionably build churches. Open Question: Why do some people believe that the Holocaust never happened?

I posted an earlier question about this. People thought that I didn't think the Holocaust never happened. I want to ask you why some people, Islamic extremists and white supremacists, believe that the Holocaust never happened. I think it has something to do with countering the argument for the need for a Jewish state in Israel. Some Islamic groups want the land to revert to being Palestine, as it was before the area became Israel. The reasoning is that Israel needs to be a Jewish state because of what happened to the Jews in Germany under the Nazis and the Holocaust. Hitler was elected in a Democratic Germany, the Nazi took over, then Hitler became a dictator and the Holocaust was implemented. The Jews want Israel, the Promise Land, as their homeland that other faiths could not take away from them. There are other issues around it. There is the issue of European Jews making the land of the nomadic Palestinians their private property. Some people have compared that to the white settlers taking the land from the Native Americans. That's a whole other issue. Why do you think the President of Iran thinks the Holocaust never happened? Another belief is that some groups admit that the Holocaust happened but that the American military exaggerated the reports on the Holocaust as propaganda to demonize Germany during World War Two. So some groups deny that the Holocaust ever happened at all, that it is a complete fabrication. Other groups admit that the Holocaust happened but that what actually happened was minor compared to what was reported as American and European military propaganda. Some of the information about what the Nazis did to the Jews has been debated for years. Did the Nazis make soap out of Jews? Did they make lampshades out of them? Did the Nazis put the flesh of Jews into slaughter houses and use that to feed animals? Did the Nazis process sausages and frankfurters made from human flesh? William Shirer wrote that Adolph Hitler was given a film about some torture of Jews. Whatever the Nazis did made Hitler vomit. If we do not learn from history, history will repeat itself. You can say that Hitler did it all. You can say it was Nazis and not Germans. Hitler was elected as Chancellor of Germany. He was known as an Anti Semite, and he was elected because he was Antisemitic. The Germans loved Hitler. Many Europeans loved Hitler. In the European countries in which the Nazis occupied, local people would look for Jews and report Jews to the Nazis. When train loads of Jews were carted to the concentration camps, Europeans would cheer "Jews for soap" as the trains would come through the villages. Hitler could not have killed over six million Jews on his own. He had a lot of help, from Germans and Europeans. Even Pope Benedict served under the Nazis as a Hitler Youth. You can say that if they did not serve the Nazis they would be killed or worse. Many served the Nazis willingly. You can say we should all forgive and forget. It was over sixty years ago. Let's forgive them. In order to forgive a person, a person must confess what they did. They must admit wrongdoing. The Holocaust happened. The Germans did it. The Europeans did it. It was not just the Nazis. Today, there are some people who believed that the Holocaust never happened. Who are these people? What do they hope to gain by denying this? When the Islamic extremists destroyed the Twin Towers on 9/11/01, it was a terrorist attack aimed at undermining America's support for Israel. The terrorists said that they were doing this to honor Allah and that they would have 1,000 virgins waiting for them in Paradise when they died. They also cited passages in the Koran as sources for their actions. They believed that the Jews are the Great Satan and Americans are the Infidels who support them. On 9/11/01, Saddam Hussein and the Iraqis burned Israeli and American flags when reports reached them of the attacks on the Twin Towers. The President of Iran and the Iranians also celebrated the 9/11/01 attacks. Many white supremacists, neo Nazi groups, believe that the Holocaust never happened. Some believe that it did happen but not on the scale that was later reported. Do many Islamic groups believe that the Holocaust never happened, or if it did, it did not happen on the massive scale that was later reported? more

Open Question: Would everyone stop with the Helen Lovejoy responses to the Mosque in NY?

It seems like people are worrying about nothing but peoples feelings. "Oh but it will make the 9/11 families feel bad. Won't somebody please think of the children?" There a valid arguments on both sides of the issue but so many people seem to just be ignoring them so they can make an emotional appeal. I understand not everyone is doing this but it's more then usual. Does anyone else think the emotional appeals on this issue are more then is common? I understand questioning (Not immediately opposing) the Mosque because you want to make sure the money is clean. (i.e. not donated by extremists, no one wants a mosque funded by anti-American groups.) Or wanting them to reveal the exact use of all the floors (To make sure it won't be a mosque and community center ont he first two floors and rented out for profit on the rest. But it would still be called a religious organization so it wouldn't have to pay taxes on a profit making building.) But what I cannot understand is people (Who usually aren't even New Yorkers btw) saying that they cannot build there because it would be rude. What happened to the 9/11ers and their families is horrible, but religious freedom can't tip toes around peoples feelings. If they get the permit then they can do whatever they want with the land, and if they are denied the permit it should be for a valid reason (I think they are having issues with a 99 years lease that isn't up yet) not just because some people might not like it.@ Mama What foreign Muslims did in Spain (A foreign nation) does not reflect American Muslims wanting a Mosque in America. Open Question: How can you Help free an Outstanding young American journalist imprisoned for Reporting on Human rights abuses?

The excellent young American journalist Jake Hess – who is a good friend of mine – has just been imprisoned in Turkey in extremely worrying circumstances. Hess has been factually reporting from Southern Turkey for over a year now on way the Kurdish civilian population is being treated. Here’s a sample of his excellent reporting: “Compared to most internally displaced Kurds in northern Iraq, Shamal Qadir is almost lucky. Since the Turkish army devastated his village, Kuzine, in a bombing raid Jul. 1, he’s been living in a schoolhouse, where room temperatures are comfortable and basic amenities are accessible. “Our family bought land and started building houses in Kuzine in 1996. We did it for our children, so they’d have a place to live in the future,” Qadir tells IPS. “Now, our dreams have been destroyed.” Qadir is one of roughly 6,500 people who have been driven from their homes by Turkish and Iranian bombings of Kurdish border villages in northern Iraq since May 24.” For rigorously and compassionately reporting on a horrifying situation, Hess has been jailed. Open Question: Why is this country so anti WASP and American?

Well I'm from NJ and I am of WASP ancestry, complete WASP background, and when I moved to NYC for a few years, I moved to a 'lower class' neighborhood in the Bronx, and it was majority Catholic it was Puerto Ricans, Dominicans, Mexicans, Irish, Italians and Albanians(the Catholic ones). My building has a good mix of Hispanics, Irish, Albanians and Italians, when I moved in they seen by my last name I was not any of the three and a basically a WASP, I did not attend the Catholic church in the neighborhood, I was jumped numerous times by groups of teenagers, a few times they yelled racist remarks like "you pussy a-- hick" "get out of our neighborhood" "you aint one of us" stuff like that, the Irish and Italians also had a fierce hostility towards me. Its a shame that America is being taken over by these people and they hate anybody whos different from them, I recall a few times when they jumped Muslim people in the neighborhood and removed the womens scarf off of her head and robbed her, they also shouted to the Muslims "you terrorists". Are WASPs a dying breed? Is this what America is coming too? The WASPs are probably a minority now compared to Hispanics, Irish and Italians in America. Its a darn shame.Oh and I forgot to mention the African Americans and Jamaicans in the neighborhood, who also gave me issues, although they weren't Catholic. more

FACTS: There is no mosque being built on ground zero. The site the mosque is being built is an old Burlington Coat Factory. The site in question is not visible from ground zero. Ground zero is not visible from the site. The group in question owned the site prior to 9/11. I am hoping that the oratory skills I retain and I've gained through 3 years of American-education will help me profoundly on the interviews. From what I've heard, Harvard's acceptance rate for last year was roughly 17%. People consider that a paltry, unrealistic double figures; I say, "why not?" Someone in my contacts asked this question and the best answer was selected before I had a chance to answer. My answer would have been this quote from Bob Whitaker: Lonely Courage Combat to the bigger risks I took among the addicts were not the real trials for me. There is an exhilaration in taking risks. One major thing that happened to the Obedient Generation was that they learned that nothing is RIGHT unless you do it in a mob. It teaches them not to do anything unless it is Groupthink. “You learn to give orders,” the cliché goes, “By learning to TAKE orders.” That is fine for a slave overseer, but not for a free man. Ann Rice was talking about her youth being what they called a Free Spirit in California. She said, somewhat wonderingly, that these Free Sprits would ask each other, “Are WE still boycotting grapes?” I doubt most of her readers got the full impact of that. Those in the sixties who thought they were rebelling against their Obedient Generation fathers did not have any idea how exactly like their fathers they were. As Rice pointed out, in order to be a Free Sprit, you joined the Free Spirit Movement. You thought just like every other Free Spirit, just like a good soldier. You even wore a uniform! We all knew “hippies” from their clothes. You could tell someone’s hippie politics from a block away, exactly the way you knew a soldier or a sailor. When the media refer to the Youth Movement, they mean a group of people of a certain age who they insist think exactly alike. Those who insist they are anti-stereotype always refer to young people as “idealistic,” meaning they think like the old lefty who can’t admit he’s getting old. In the Gulag Archipelago, Solzhenitsyn kept repeating that a free man had to have “a personal point of view.” In his years Soviet concentration camps, he got an idealistic vision of Americans. Actually, he would have been at home among Americans before his generation. But when he got here, he raised hell. He was shocked to find that the last people who have a personal point of view in America was our self-described “free thinkers.” He said t hey were kind of free thinkers he had seen in the KGB. One of the greatest compliments I ever got was from Bill Rusher. He said that at the weekly editorial meeting someone had commiserated with Buckley, “You have gotten jumped on this week by both Solzhenitsyn AND Whitaker.” I couldn’t quite believe that someone, someone hostile, had actually put me in THAT category! In one way, miles distant, we were alike. Solzhenitsyn had done his fighting ALONE. He had been a dissenter in a totalitarian state. He had been in World War II, and on the Eastern Front, the one that made France look like a picnic. But he saw that as a good time in his life, before he was arrested on the front and sent to the Gulag. Solzhenitsyn looked at others as the World War II Generation looked at everybody else. The obedient Generation said, “Nobody else could join thousands of others in an attack?” As a matter of fact, MILLIONS of other did that, and some of them were pre-teens. But Solzhenitsyn asked something rare, and even rare among SURVIVORS of tyranny: “Could this person be where I was and maintain a PERSONAL point of view in a situation which makes the hardest combat seem like a wonderful dream?” He quickly came to DESPISE Modern Age Americans. He was right that if Americans put on Soviet costumes they would make good KGB. I will never quite get over being put together with that man, however briefly. And yet, on the oft-chanted yet never-proved basis that America was founded as a "Christian nation," you hijack our legislature, our court system, and even our schools, and conform them to your image until you've done all but establish a state religion. So, to prevent my "question" from turning into a rant, I want to propose a hypothetical situation, and then follow it with a question I've wanted to know the answer to for quite some time. --- Suppose that the Anti-Defamation League lobbied members of Congress to pass a bill mandating the closure of all businesses from Friday sunset to Saturday sunset, with an earmarked ban on pork sales. Last week, a Knesset committee approved a draft bill that would narrowly define Judaism according to a specific ultra-Orthodox strand. Critics say the change could prevent thousands of Jewish converts, and their children, from being granted citizenship because the rabbinical authorities in Israel do not recognize Reform and Conservative conversions as authentically Jewish. In fact, even some Orthodox converts could be excluded if the Israeli religious authorities do not consider their conversions Orthodox enough. This week Benjamin Netanyahu, the Israeli Prime Minister, said he would not support the bill. His decision came after intense lobbying from outside Israel. When the modern state of Israel was created in 1948, Jews living in an often hostile world knew they could always find a haven in their ancestral land. After centuries of anti-Semitism, culminating in the catastrophe of the Holocaust, Israel made it clear all Jews would always be welcome and granted automatic citizenship. There was no stipulation whether the person was Jewish by birth or conversion — and nor did it matter where or how the conversion took place. A Jew was a Jew and the door was open. David Rotem, a member of the Knesset and the bill’s sponsor, has said it is intended to help complete the conversion of Russian Jews, Israel’s largest immigrant group, so they could fully take part in Jewish ritual life — and it would not affect the law of return. Supporters say it would also create a common religiosity among Jews. But these arguments are not reassuring to critics, especially those in North America. “It would be the first time that you have a legislative authority for matters of Jewish identity being given to a single narrow religious authority,” said Rabbi Steven Wernick, chief executive officer of the United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism, the leading Conservative Jewish group in the United States. “That’s never happened in Jewish history,” added the rabbi, who was in Jerusalem this week to lobby against the proposed legislation. Numbers of converts worldwide are difficult to come by but a study in 2001 found 170,000 converts out of a Jewish population of 5.5 million in the United States. Judaism has always had a biological component in that the religion passes from mother to child. Given the number of invasions ancient Israel suffered, and the incidence of rape, there was not always a way to determine paternity with certainty, so maternity became the standard. But within that there was flexibility. Anyone could join the faith after instruction. And so the children of a female convert would be considered Jewish. In the Bible, Ruth who was a Moabite, decided to stay with her Jewish mother-in-law and become a Jew by choice. “She made a conversion of the heart,” said Rabbi Erin Polonsky, a pastor at Temple Sinai, a Reform synagogue in Toronto. “She decided the Jewish people were her people and the Jewish God her God. I’m not sure she would be accepted by the ultra-orthodox rabbis of today.” Rabbi Polonsky said the new bill has the potential to be divisive on many levels, including the psychological message that Israel would send to Jews living abroad. “I’m incredibly worried for my converts and their ability to operate as Jews in the world. But if this should go through, it would mark a huge break between Israel and the Jewish diaspora,” she said. “I believe there is a variety of approaches to Judaism that are all expressions of how to be Jewish. But if this law is passed it would be the state saying to Jews around the world that you’re not good enough in our eyes.” For American and Canadian Jews, who are mainly not ultra-orthodox, it is considered a denigration of their form of Judaism, said Rabbi Gary Bretton-Granatoor, vice-president of the World Union for Progressive Judaism, which represents Reform Jews. He said the situation in Israel would be like Christian fundamentalists being given the right to decide who is worthy of U.S. citizenship. “At a time when Israel needs all the friends it can get, to now try to disenfranchise a large swath of Jews around the world is idiotic,” he said. Observers of Israeli culture say it seems strange from the outside, then, that a small minority of fundamentalist rabbis can hold sway over a population that is more secular than religious and alienate staunch Jewish supporters who live outside Israel, especially Canadian and American Jews. Part of the reason this exists today is historical: the original Zionist settlers were more interested in a secular state and carving out a haven for refugees; they were happy to leave religious affairs to the ultra-orthodox sect. The question up there is just an attention grabber to let you get the gist of what I'm asking; the question is really more long winded so as to avoid misconception of the whole thing. Were the United States to cease the offering of foreign aid to all countries whose constitution, policies, or laws, in the opinion of an independent commission, discriminate based on religious belief, would... (a) Iran's leaders cease the espousing of anti-American rhetoric? (b) Al-Qaeda's leaders cease the espousing of anti-American rhetoric and the planning of attacks upon American targets? (c) Israel adopt adversarial foreign policies towards the United States? (d) It cause stabilization or destabilization of the Israeli-Palestinian situation? (e) It cause stabilization or destabilization of the Mideast region's situation? (f) a loss or gain of credibility amongst other Western nations? (g) a loss or gain of credibility amongst domestic and foreign religious groups? (h) short term positive or negative economic effects? (i) long term positive or negative economic effects? I trust that the Yahoo! Resolved Question: Muslims, a question about 'extremeists' and their beliefs?

Now I KNOW I'm walking on eggshells here, so first off I want to say I have a good Muslim friend, I respect Islam a hell of a lot more than I do Christianity, and half the time I am defending Muslims from the etremeist stereotypes like 'Omg don't let them in our country, they'll bomb us all'. And I'm Australian, not American (thats half the battle) Now I'm not sure how much you guys would know about these 'extremeists', but can I ask if you DO know, what are their beliefs and what are they fighting for? The most common response I get is a verse in the Quran that says killing in the name of Allah shall be rewarded? What is this verse, or does it even exist at all? Please don't misinterpret this question, I'm just asking out of curiosity, not in anti-muslim fashion. I'm an Atheist and have no real 'emotional' connection to any of these issues. But I am respectful and know that Muslims are not terrorists ect.
