Voting Question: Question about static when building a computer?
Will I be okay if I put all my components on a hardwood or tile floor? If not, what about the box they came in or on the bubble wrap? (I don't know if that has anything to do with static but I know there are some places you're not supposed to place them) Also, if I just hold a fork or something the entire time, do I have anything to worry about- because I don't have an anti-static wrist thing... moreVoting Question: Question about static when building a computer?

I'm about to begin building my Computer. My large work surface will be newspaper, underneath that will be a table cloth. Underneath the table cloth will be a sheet of wood, and under this wood there will be another table cloth, which all rests on a wooden table. The floor is a plain carpet. I also have an anti-static wrist strap (With a crocodile clip that can connect to another object). How can I completely and safely ground myself so I can safely work inside and on my Computer? moreResolved Question: Do I need a anti-static wrist strap to work in a computer?

Hey so I am going to build my own computer for the first time. I was wondering if there were any precautions I should take. I have a anti-static wrist band. Do I need anything else? Should I work on carpet or a wood floor? I need precautions I should take! 10 points for best answer. I don't wanna screw up my computer. moreVoting Question: how do i ground my self, and how do i handle a motherboard?
hello people! i am about to replace my computers motherboard, RAM and processor, here are the steps i will start with. i will turn off computer power, and unplug the computer from the socket. then i will remove the casing and touch the inside of the case to ground myself. as for the motherboard i will take it out of the bag it came with and rest it upon the bag. the bag will be placed on a hardwood floor. now my questions are -when i turn off my computer, does the computer have to be unpluged or pluged in so that when i touch the inside of the casing i will be grounded? --do i place my MOBO ON the bag it came in or turn the bag inside out (cuz it kind of makes sence since the inside would be anti static). but yea, so outside of bag or turn inside out? --- AND will it be alright to work on a hardwood floor wearing shorts, no socks, and a teeshirt? moreVoting Question: how to use a anti-static wrist strap?
Ok so im gona buy a antistatic wrist strap with everything else for the computer im gona build but how do i use it i saw on a video that you put it on your hand, and a metal plate touches your skin, and then a crocodile clip goes on a unpainted metal area of the case. so once i put the metal plate on my hand, and i put the crocodile clip on the case, how logn do i have to wait till the static is gone. if i wear a watch, will that affect the static, the watch is metal. also, if the computer im building is on a solid wood table, and i am standing in the room, and the room floor is covered with carpet. will that affect it. because carpet causes static, doesnt it? so how would that affect the computer. the carpet. thanks anyways. moreResolved Question: What Can I Attach My Anti Static Wrist Strap/Mat To So Its Grounded?

I don't own an anti-static wrist guard, and I wanted to know what would be the alternative from keeping static away from the inside of your computer. I plan to install RAM in a few days and I will be opening up my computer This is what I was going to do: Unplug all the wires, place the computer on the hard wood floor, open the case, keep my arm touching the metal part of the computer so that the metal can absorb any static, and place the ram in. Does this sound good or should I do something different? By the way, I have a carpet here and a rotating chair, so I plan to move the chair away to reduce static. moreResolved Question: What is the best surface to build a computer on?
Hi! So I am building a computer and need to find the best surface to work on, preventing ESD. I do not have an anti-static pad and do not intend to buy one, so that is out of the question. I have an antistatic wrist strap though. I think a plastic table is a bad idea, but a wooden table may be more suitable. I have rug throughout my entire house, so I need something to lay down.. It looks like a domed roof. 4: A little Carbon dioxide puts the fizz in soda, but too much of it in the air can do what? Traps heat in atmosphere and might raise Earth’s temperature. Could cause climate changes. A and B 5: Diamonds and graphite are both pure allotropes of Carbon. How are they different? Diamonds are clear, graphite is grey. Diamonds are hardest mineral known, graphite’s soft enough to leave a line on paper. A and B 6: A girl is standing on a washing up bowl and touching a Van der Graaf machine. What do you think is the purpose of the washing up bowl? Higher altitudes conduct electricity better So the girl can reach the Van der Graff To insulate the girl from the ground 7: Explain why the girl's hair is standing on end (no it's not her style, it's to do with the charge) The static collected from the Van der Graff generator creates a field on the girls head that pulls her hair away from the machine. The girl's hairs all pick up static electricity from the Van de Graaf machine and like charges repel, so each hair tries to get as far away from the other hairs as possible. The girl has metal braids in her hair that are repelled by the Van der Graff generator 8: Which sub-atomic particle has no electrical charge? They all have electrical charges Anti-matter The neutron 9: Which of the following will usually create static electricity? Rub a wet rag on a plastic comb Rub a coin with a plastic comb Rub a plastic comb with some wool 10: How does friction cause electrons to go from one material to another? It scrapes them off and deposits them on the other material It doesn't move the electrons; adhesive forces pull off the electrons Electrons are attracted to another material because of the Periodic Table 11: What happens to a material that collects electrons on its surface? It has a negative charge It has a positive charge It shoots off sparks 12: What causes the noise of thunder? Air clapping together after it suddenly cools Friction on the rain drops The noise caused by the bright flash 13: If you were spray painting a car and the paint droplets are given a positive charge, what charge should the car be given? negative positive same charge 14: Why would less paint fall on the floor? less paint falls on the floor because the paint being of the same charge attracts itself less paint falls on the floor because its coming out with a smoother coating less paint falls on the floor because more is being attracted to the car 15: How does the special spray prevent static cling? It creates an opposite charge It makes the clothes stiff so they don't cling It discourages the collection of charges 16: When can high voltages be relatively safe? If you wear rubber soled shoes If the amount of current (amperes) is very small If you stay more than 15 inches away 17: How can static electricity help control pollution? By preventing lightning from starting fires By cleaning particles from smoke stacks By cleaning electrons from the air 18: What is a common way to create direct current electricity? Most tutorials on building a pc recommend getting an anti-static wrist strap. I was wondering If wearing rubber gloves (like the think tight white ones doctors wear) would be adequate? Also, people suggest not to assemble a pc in a room whose floor is carpeted. Would it be fine if i just wore sneakers or boots, or sandals to keep the static electricity from the carpet from getting into me? Or should I do something else????? Please help!I also forgot to mention whether it would be wise to leave a humidifier on a little bit before assembling the pc and during the assembly (since static electricity is most present under dry conditions)? moreResolved Question: Alternate for anti- static electricity wrist strap (PLEASE ANSWER THIS QUESTION FAST)?
i am about to change my cd-rom drive and was wondering if there is an alternate for the anti- static electricity wrist starp or if i do not need anything to conduct away the static. (PLZ ANSWER) moreResolved Question: What can you clip an Anti-static wrist strap to in order to ground yourself?
I got an antistatic (ESD wrist strap) wrist strap so I could open up a computer and change parts without zapping it. The wrist strap has a clip on the end that is supposed to connect to something that is grounded and made of metal. I don't want to leave my computer plugged in while working, so my computer will not be grounded and thus I cannot clip the strap to the computer case itself (is this right?). What can I clip my wrist strap to in order to ground myself? I am working upstairs in my house with the computer and I have wood floors, in case that will help.Should I clip my wrist strap into the third prong on a power outlet or a a water pipe or a screw on a switch plate?
