Resolved Question: Will a metallic anti-static plastic strip behind my battery on my cellphone cause damage to it?

I noticed that listening to the radio in my car with my cellphone on was hard to enjoy because of the buzzing sound my phone's interference causes. I saw on youtube a video that shows someone placing a cellphone on a silvery electrostatic bag and the buzzing stopped. I went to a local computer repair shop and got one they were about to throw away. I cut a small square of it out and put it behind my phone's battery. It works! I haven't noticed any problems with my phone since it's been in there but I saw a warning online somewhere that it could cause tiny circuits to short out. (I tried the pinkish bag and it didn't stop the interference. Only the silverish one worked.) more

Voting Question: I need some help with my science, homework please?

1.) In the diagram above a girl is standing on a washing up bowl and touching a Van der Graaf machine. What do you think is the purpose of the washing up bowl? Higher altitudes conduct electricity better So the girl can reach the Van der Graff To insulate the girl from the ground 2.) Explain why the girl's hair is standing on end (no it's not her style, it's to do with the charge) The static collected from the Van der Graff generator creates a field on the girls head that pulls her hair away from the machine. The girl's hairs all pick up static electricity from the Van de Graaf machine and like charges repel, so each hair tries to get as far away from the other hairs as possible. The girl has metal braids in her hair that are repelled by the Van der Graff generator 3.) Which sub-atomic particle has no electrical charge? They all have electrical charges Anti-matter The neutron 4.) Which of the following will usually create static electricity? Rub a wet rag on a plastic comb Rub a coin with a plastic comb Rub a plastic comb with some wool 5.) How does friction cause electrons to go from one material to another? It scrapes them off and deposits them on the other material It doesn't move the electrons; adhesive forces pull off the electrons Electrons are attracted to another material because of the Periodic Table 6.) What happens to a material that collects electrons on its surface? It has a negative charge It has a positive charge It shoots off sparks 7.) What causes the noise of thunder? Resolved Question: why won't my computer recognize my hard disk?

So one day, my uncle dug up his old Hard Disk, its a 80Gb Seagate... exactly identical to the Hard disk im currently using as my Drive C... now he said he hasn't used it in a while and wants to give it to me.. so naturally, I ACCEPTED IT WITH ARMS WIDE OPEN... under the condition that I make it work... I've done this kind of stuff several times, so I thought "pff, easy.." and this is what I did so far: Connections, CHECK, all good, and brand new wires all proven working... I booted up and found it has 2 partitions and 30Gb of unallocated space... I can't access it so I went to Computer Management, deleted the 2 partitions, and got it ready for formatting... and then my PC crashed... I rebooted and I tried formatting it again, and again and again... and it either crashes midway, or windows says it can't be formatted, when the latter would happen the HDD dissapears completely, in Computer Management, in Device Manager... it just doesn't exist anymore... I installed Diskkeeper, but it won't recognize it either... right now, I don't know what to do... my uncle also warned me that he had some problems with it himself so he stopped using it. But I think theres still a future for the HDD... its very well maintained, no dust, kept in an anti-static plastic bag... its as good as brand new if it only wasn't 3 years old... What do you guys think? I really want to get this to work again. what else can I do... other details: im Running on a Windows Vista Ultimate SP2 the HDD is STILL recognized in the BIOS, so I think thats a good thing my Computer is pretty high-end(except for the shitty OS) any ideas? more

Resolved Question: can a microwavable plastic container serve as an anti ESD (electro static damage) for an HDD? Thanks?

I need to transport my HDD, unfortunately I've thrown my anti static bags. Can a plastic microwavable container do the job? more

Resolved Question: After unplugging an electronic ...?

What should you do with the plug? What I mean is, when you've unplugged an electronic for whatever reason, should you put the plug inside a small, plastic bag (to keep it from collecting dust), or should you just put it down on the ground? Is ESD/static electricity a concern here, or does that really only apply to components INSIDE of an electronic? Does the PLUG of an electronic also have to be protected from ESD? A plastic bag may not be anti-static, but is that a problem? Because the alternative is leaving the plug on the ground, which more than likely is carpet in most homes. Isn't that much worse? more

Voting Question: How is ram delivered?

I received a "new" Micron 2gb sodimm from the mail. I ordered it from a market seller off amazon. The ram cam delivered in some bubble package. But the ram was only in an anti-static bag. It came in no Micron packaging, no instructions, no hard plastic, nothing. It just came in a 3M anti static bag. Is ram delivered like this if I were to buy it from Micron or a large retailer? more

Resolved Question: Can my slr lens be cleaned with premoistened lens wipe tissues?

Resolved Question: What kind of little rubber or plastic feet can you use for supporting a motherboard?

I'm not certain. Can you use just about anything, or is there a special anti-static kind? Should the the height of such rubber or plastic feet be 3/8" for typical PC ATX motherboards? There are already rubber feet on my computer case backboard or whatever it is called, but the motherboard is just a bit too short for them. I want to gently slide new ones under the motherboard to support it so that it doesn't bend when I take out and add memory modules or plug and unplug the IDE connector. Are there cheap ones at the dollar store or at Wal-Mart that will work okay?It has just occurred that such feet should have an adhesive on the back that doesn't go flaky and useless in the high heat of a case that has been running full-tilt, nor should the plastic or rubber be such that or makes a horrible goopy mess on the back of the motherboard after being in said heat for a few years. What do you think?Correction. Above, "... that or makes ..." should be "... that it makes ...".The existing rubber feet seem likely to suffer damage if I try to remove them. Also, the motherboard already has six mounting holes used to secure the motherboard, filled with grounding screws. The motherboard just needs a bit more physical support on the ends, and I'd much rather not have to disassemble it again just to add sawed-off plastic standoffs. Thus the question about rubber or plastic feet. :) more

Resolved Question: Why aren't computer parts better protected from static electricity?

If you go to a PC store and you buy an addon, for example a VGA you will find that it has a nice package, tons of CDs,DVDs,cables included, the card is well protected... or is it? Why aren't the manufacturers put a slim layer of protective anti-static plastic on the open circuits? It is common knowledge that static electricity can destroy small parts of these devices that is NOT under warranty. So why are they cheaping it out on this? I only had 1 HDD that had a protective "armour" plate on the circuit board. Today's VGAs are almost as big as a motherboard and it takes a lot of effort to see that none of the little parts are accidentaly broken off by a SATA or IDE cable while putting the thing together. Why aren't these sensitive equipments better protected? more

Resolved Question: What is the best surface to build a computer on?

Hi! So I am building a computer and need to find the best surface to work on, preventing ESD. I do not have an anti-static pad and do not intend to buy one, so that is out of the question. I have an antistatic wrist strap though. I think a plastic table is a bad idea, but a wooden table may be more suitable. I have rug throughout my entire house, so I need something to lay down.. Flooring: -Rug (bad) -Plastic Tarp -Tin foil (grounded) -Newspaper Table: -Plastic Tarp -Tin foil (grounded) -Newspaper -Wooden table I dont have any anti static bags so dont ask for those either. Resolved Question: External DVD Writer/Burner?

I just purchased an external DVD Burner and had some concerns regarding its operation and storage. I was wondering whether or not I could store the drive inside of its box (and the plastic bag it comes in) when it's not in use, instead of leaving it out. I assume that the plastic bag is anti-static, since the drive arrives inside of it? And would it be safe for me to store it inside of the box it came in when it's not in use? Also, I was wondering if my placement of the device during operation was safe. When using it, I place it on top of the desk horizontally, close to the monitor and desktop PC. Could this placement have any adverse effects on any of the devices involved? And I was a bit concerned about the vibration that emits from the drive while it loads/burns discs. Could this vibration cause any damage to the computer? And finally, regarding the "buffer underrun protection" that comes with the drive, I was wondering whether I had to "enable" that option manually somehow when using Nero (the included software) to write discs or if the drive automatically utilizes the underrun protection? more

Resolved Question: Storing RAM - retail packing vs. Anti-Static ?

Hiya, I am used to updating my computer, and I normally store old components in anti-static bags. I am intending to sell my old RAM (corsair 2gb) on ebay, and I notice most people put the RAM back into the original packaging. I am normally very careful with components as I shorted the back panel of my old computer while changing it. Is putting it straight back into the cardboard and plastic packaging a good idea?Or should I find a way to put it into an anti-static bag? Thanks more

Resolved Question: Need advise on how to transport static-sensitive computer parts.?

I am moving to another country, and I know I can't take my whole chassis with everything inside to the airport. I will take the motherboard, RAM's, CPU, Video Cards, etc. etc. in my luggage. But I need to know if I have to buy special Anti-Static bags, or would any plastic bag make the trick of protecting those things against possible static? more

Resolved Question: Would a plastic sleeve protect a hotel key card from demagnetizing better than a paper card sleeve?

The cheap LoCo 300 Oersted key cards at hotels typically get demagnetized by everyday electronic devices--particularly cell phones. This I know for sure. But does the paper sleeve that the key card comes in protect it at all? Or would a plastic--or some sort of anti-static type of sleeve--offer more protection from the magnets inside these devices? just "JR": from what I understand credit cards are all HiCo Oersted and are a lot harder to mess up than a common hotel key card, electronic devices don't do it because they've been built for long term use. Hotel keycards have the that ultra low magnetization (which you mentioned) because they are so worthless and need to be reprogrammed frequently. Now as far as the cell phone VS. scratch argument: I've been working in a hotel for some time now, and I can say without a shadow of a doubt that a cell phone will completely wipe out the key cards we have without any hesitation. I see it about 3-4 times a night (I work audit). The folks in the day shifts see it even more often. A key card in the same pocket as a cell phone = dead key card, always. You know the saying: "if I had a nickel"... And I can't remember the last time a scratched up card was an issue, most guests openly admit to having had it sitting right next to the cell phone. Some come in carrying them both in the same hand. more

Resolved Question: What is the best way to ground myself to discharge static electricity?

I am going to attempt for the first time to upgrade the RAM for my laptop and I keep on reading here and there that I need to make sure that I am grounded and free from static. I don't have one of those anti static wristbands. So what is the best method? I definitely have to keep my laptop unplugged and battery removed. Possibly do it in an uncarpeted area. Which would be my kitchen, which has a plastic sheet thing. You know. Does that have any affect? I also have a metal lamp. They say I can touch that..BUT how do I know the lamp is grounded? Any clarificiations as my rudimentary knowledge of physics clearly sucks! more
