Open Question: Desktop Icons Disarrange: How to fix?

Earlier today, I was on YTMND, which I think triggered some kind of lagging on my computer, which made my browser (Mozilla Firefox) and Yahoo! Messenger stop working. When I turned everything off, I though maybe I should reboot so that the problem doesn't happen again. When I did, the Windows loading screen, took forever. I tried different start-up options and finally found that only Safe Mode and Domain Control mode worked. I went with Domain Control since it gave me more power. I preformed a System Restore in safe mode prior to this, which didn't work. I ran a De-fragment analysis which returned that everything was alright, and a SpyBot scan, which said I only have possibly malicious cookies, and 3 cookie security risks, and deleted them. However, in Domain mode, I kept noticing that the icons which didn't fit on the desktop were having a seizure of some sort on the first (upper-left) icon on the desktop. I finally got the computer to boot, but now every time that explorer.exe (Windows Explorer) starts, the desktop icons rearrange themselves from the arrangement that I made. Is there some way of preventing this? My operating system is Microsoft ® Windows XP Home Edition version 5.1 (2002) Service Pack 1 : Build 2600.xpsp2.030422-1633 and my machine is an eMachines T2892 with an AMD Anthlon XP 2800.@Paul: Thank you for the advice :) However, a few years back I upgraded to Service Pack 2, and it didn't work on this computer so I had to re-ghost the computer. I've seen service pack 3 on our laptop, and quite honestly, I think it has many annoying (obtrusive) features, like the auto updater and inbuilt anti-virus software. I have purchased a new Microsoft Natural Ergonomic Desktop 7000 keyboard & mouse. The keyboard attaches just fine, however the mouse will not connect at all. I have changed the batteries, moved transceiver to every USB port and even tried on three different PC with different operating systems. Open Question: Lost Operating System Validation after attempting to delete suspicious file.?

I attempted to delete a J-peg file or one disguised as one, since it did not have a thumbnail image. My computer froze, went into BSOD 3 seconds later. I logged back into it from restart, to find that my operating system claimed to be invalid. So after re-validating the OS and attempting multiple Virus, Malware, and spyware scans. I have found nothing and am at a loss for what could have caused it and where I stand if the "it" is unrecognizable by any current Virus/Malware/Spyware Database. The main applications I used were: Avast4! Anti-virus and spyware Spybot Search and Destroy AVG Internet Security Ad-Aware + (Threatfire, which I cannot reinstall until the computer is clean.) In the past I have had issues with: Komodo Internet Security SpyDoctor Trend Micro / House Call (Sometime after they began selling) MalwareBytes PcTools Anti Spyware Norton and Symantec (Have never worked for me, in the instance of a true infection.) McAfee (Same Idea, different package.) As a note, I have never tried Kaspersky. Open Question: How can I get my Windows XP login picture to Not be cut off like vista or 7?

If you've ever seen all three operating systems you see that xp's login picture(which you can change) is cut off on the sides, by I guess a white color, idk its to small. But you notice if you put the same picture on vista or 7 its not cut off. Infact its framed perfectly. How can I get xp's login picture to be framed perfectly like vista or 7. It does this with EVERY picture. And I feel that if I were to try changing different login screens that that wouldnt solve the problem. It would just make the background look pretty while still showing the imperfect framing of the login picture. more

I love to play around with computers and the different operating systems like any distro of Linux or variations of Microsoft Windows. I'm not big into the hardware side of it(replacing motherboards and swapping for larger power supplys). I'm more into the software side of things, like security and Operating Systems. Open Question: Rebooted XP using CD-Rom, However now there is still files from last Operating System along with new XP?

Went ahead and rebooted XP with the Re-Installation CD for XP2. Went through all the steps and setup to get things whiped clean. After all the setup things look fine but my old files are still visible just in a different Documents and Settings Folder. Instead of having one folder for All Users and my name, there is now two of each, one saying All Users, All Users.windows. one with my name and then one with my name followed by first name repeated by numbers. I have rebooted before and everything was whiped clean so I don't understand why files are still intact. Most files are still on my computer, what the hell is going on? Looked like I only had 1 Op System installed when I went to System and Advanced. What to do? Don't want old files.... WAnt fresh start.... more

I had bought and returned two of the same type of desktops preloaded only with the Windows 7 operating system. I'm not sure what caused it, but they both somehow 'locked' me out by leaving me with a blank screen everytime I turned them on (before the log in screen). I tried everything, but I could not get past this screen to access my desktop. I want to buy a different computer, but am not sure whether its Windows 7, or the computer brand (Acer Intel Dual Core) is to blame. Hi, I am having a MAJOR issue with the camera of my Blackberry 9700, last week i was trying to start up the camera and it gave me this msg: "Could not start the camera. Close other applications and try opening the camera again" i closed all the applications, but it didnt work, so i removed all my 3rd party applications from the phone. Still nothing. Then I even tryied reinstalling the Operating System, and I even tried different versions of the OS. still the same problem, when i start the camera it takes a very long time to load and in the end i either get a BLACK screen or "Could not start the camera. Close other applications and try opening the camera again" but lately it is just the black screen. I baught an unlocked phone and have no warrenty on it so Im really hoping that its a software issue and not the hardware issue, because then i would have to be going through a whole process of either replacing the camera (which i dont know where to get) or the phone itself.Cpt. Voting Question: Spyware on laptops and mobile. LG renoir started acting bizzarely - it said 90 % of memory was "external?

it said it had a U.S.B. connected. It didn't - well not to the handset! So a few percent of memory was phone, same for SIM and memory card and majority was "external". it locked me out of my contacts and seemed to have a roaming history i had never used (googlemaps etc). the mobile (an LG Renoir) even displayed and seemed to be working ( though not for calls etc) without the SIM! don't know too much about spyware but my old laptop was also being operating remotely. privacy settings were changed back as soon as i changed them so i noticed then. My ex boyfriend bought Norton 360 and also Tech Guys assistance but afterwards I discovered that the laptop was then allowed to be operated remotely by this software. So that might be why the remote assistance continued... the system wip never took v long anyway! The spyware was on my work laptop, home laptop and phone. The phone was dialling data call numbers but I don't know why or to whom. the vista laptop put its own system in and deleted the regular windows as soon as I tried to stop it. Each time (cos lots of time the search view was different so the icons would've been changed. it ended with a blank scrren with only "Ease of Access" the disability program on it, I'd love an explanation - some money went out of my account but it seeemd to be for spying rather than cash. Notepad and/ or wordpad took a log of everything that went on or that I did. The hacker or whatever was also someone attached to the user name with parental responsibilities and therefore couldn't be deleted. At work they said 1/3 of hard drive had been destroyed so they did a system wipe on harddrive. The L.G. is broken. apparently it had been submerged in a bathtub or cup. I know this didn't happen. please can technical people help i will be forever in your debt xxxxxx more

Voting Question: My computer does not recognize any of my operating systems at startup. What should I do?

I have been trying to install a few different operating systems on my laptop. The most recent was FreeBSD. While installing it I believe I accidentally disabled or erased my GRUB by selecting an option to install a different boot manager. I couldn't get FreeBSD to install (it said something about not finding a /dev/X in the /dev file, but I did not even see a dev file mounted on the partition), and when I rebooted my computer none of my operating systems came up. This would not be the first time I had erased all of my computer information (I like to think of my laptop as a practice computer), so I put in the Ubuntu install disc to boot my computer correctly. However, while in the installation process I discovered that my original operating systems were still in their correct partitions. So, I tried the disc's option to boot Ubuntu from my first hard disc. It came up with the same message as when I had first tried to reboot the computer after exiting the FreeBSD cd: Operating System not found. Right now I'm running ubuntu off the disc to try and fix the problem. What I'm wondering is whether I should try to find a way to install FreeBSD with its bootmanager or to try and reinstall GRUB, and how I would go about doing either from the point which I am at. more

Voting Question: How can I write windows Xp service pack 2 to a disc?

One of our computers was infected with a trojan so badly the only option was to reinstall the operating system. The only disc I had to do so was the 1A re-installation package. After using it, the computer was no longer infected, but now it cant connect to networks, increase it's display resolution, and several other things, because the drivers necesary for this weren't included. What I need to do is download and install the Service Pack 2 onto it, but I can't access the internet with it because it can't connect to networks. I can write the files to a cd with one of the other computers, but I neeed to know if there is a certain procedure to doing so. In short, how do I download Xp service pack 2 onto one computer without installing it, and write it to a cd and install it on a different computer. more

Open Question: Want to have Windows XP and Ubuntu on 2 different HDD on my computer?

Hi. I have an HP A257c computer and I am upgrading it. The thing I want most is to have WIndows XP on one hard drive, and Ubuntu on the other. I have 2 separate 250 GB drives. In the past I've had both operating systems on the same drive and the GRUB (OS selector) let me choose which OS to load. However, now it just runs straight to the "slave" drive with Ubuntu on it. I'd like to be able to choose which one to use each time. I need Windows but want to learn Ubuntu but I want them on separate drives to keep things nice and neat. The hard drives are both 7200 RPM and work fine individually. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. more

Resolved Question: Help choosing between two different graphics cards?

First off, thank you to those of you who have helped me with my earlier question about graphics cards. I've been comparing graphics cards for a few hours now and have narrowed it down to the geforce gts 250 and the geforce 9800 gt. 1. I think both cards would run the sims 2 and sims 3 smoothly with the settings all the way up, my only concern about the gts 250 is that my processor might not be able to take the demands it'll put on it. It's also about $30 more than the 9800 gt, it's definitely a bit faster, but is it worth the extra money? 2. I'm also going to buy a bigger power supply, I currently have a 250 watt one. I'm trying to decide between getting a 550 watt power supply or a 620 watt power supply. I'm leaning more towards the 620, but would it really make much of a difference? 3. I currently have 6gb ddr2 memory, I'm planning on making it 8gb. There are no empty slots, but I can switch out the 2 slots that have 1gb each for 2gb. My question is, what brand should I get and what should I look for specifically when choosing ram? I have a new emachines ET1331G-03w Desktop PC. Resolved Question: Windows xp cd wont load on laptop?

Hi- I am trying to load XP on a laptop which has Windows 2000. When booting from a CD, I get different error messages, and the installation stalls. The Bios is set to boot from a CD. I tested the CD drive by installing another program, and had no problem. This laptop is partitioned, and had two operating systems on it previously. I deleted Windows 98 (hopefully) from the Boot.ini file, and everything else I could find that related to Win 98. What now? No doubt there is some kind of conflict in the bios? I'm using vista manager and I want to free up as much memory as possible by unistalling as much as i can that i dont need to use or that my pc doesnt need to operate, here is an example laid out for you for something im unsure wether to uninstall. I have 2 versions of this on my computer and one is a later version than the other. Hotfix for micorsoft .NET framework 3.5 SP1 (KB953959) and: Hotfix for micorsoft .NET framework 3.5 SP1 (KB958484) this may be two fixes on two different levels so maybe a bad example, what about earlier java updates etc also. These are things that only vista manager offers to uninstall whereas programs and features doesnt. more

All basic features such as email search also do not work. The LaunchHttpError-500" appears after each action such as email reply. Voting Question: Internet/Router/Computer Speeds?

Ok so im looking into getting internet in my apt and this internet company has about three levels of internet package. The main concern is their speeds they each provide. One says speeds up to 3 Mbps, the next up to 12 Mbps, and finally 20 Mbps. Im gonna get a wireless router and up till now I now they have Wireless B, G, & N and that they are reverse compatible and what not. I want to get the N router for when that becomes the "standard" since theyve already gone through A,B,and G pretty quickly. How does that relate if it does at all with the speeds of each package from the Internet company provides? Do I need to get a certain package, lets say the one that gives "up to 12Mbps" for it to operate at the "N" speed of my router? (I know if it doesnt that it will still work with the router, im wondering how these correlate, or if they dont.) And one more less important question. I know when Im on a PC it usually says in the system tray: Connected to internet (something like that) Excellent connection Speed: 100 Mbps --------> How is this possible if internet companies provide "up to 20 Mbps"?
