Open Question: Is anyone else unusually disturbed by the plot of the upcoming "Never Let Me Go"?

Let me warn you that this question has spoilers for the film. I haven't seen it, as it's not been released, not have I yet read the novel on which it's based, but would do so before the film. I've read a plot description and watched the trailer, and ever since have been very uneasy and disturbed, and this is coming from someone who watches disturbing horror movies all the time. The book and film are set in a dystopian Britain, at a kid's private school. The kids have all been cloned, with the intention that their organs will be harvested when they're adults. Of course this plot has been done at least twice, in "Parts: The Clonus Horror" (featured on "MST3K") and "The Island" from 2005, which I haven't watched. The difference with this is that, according to the trailers, the kids know that they've been bread to be donors, something that's quite disturbing. The film apparently follows them as they grow up with this knowledge, and fall in love and such. The combination of such a lurid plot with the Merchant/Ivory aesthetic that dominates the film is very disquieting in a way I can't quite put my finger on. Does anyone else feel this way? more

Open Question: I need help with my television reception and BT vision?

Hi, and thanks for looking at my question. I have a home tv set up of a BT vision box and a tv with freeview. I'm no expert. However, all was working perfectly until now. My problem is that I have very poor reception on a few channels (Dave, Film 4, to name just 2). All the other channels seem just fine. I think the BT vision side of things is purely to do with my internet connection, which also seems ok. My first thought was that I have an aerial problem, but why do all my other channels work fine? I have hit auto re-tune on the tv, but still no luck. Any help is greatly appreciated. more

Open Question: How should I start this screenplay?

I'm working on a screenplay about a woman, Claire Addison, who reconnects with her ex-boyfriend, Alex McNally, from high school, only to find out that he's heavily into drugs and alcohol. After discovering this, she starts trying to help him turn his life around. Some background info: Alex's drug of choice is heroin, but he also drinks a lot (and will dabble in cocaine at some point during the film). He lives in an expensive penthouse and has a girlfriend, Molly Calloway, who's also a drug addict. When he was younger, his father abused his mother (and sometimes him) and she killed herself because of it. She had it set in her will that all of her possessions & money would go to her son. So how should I start this screenplay off? Thanks in advance! They dated for two years. They started dating when they were 17 and broke up after they graduated when she went to college and he didn't. Resolved Question: Trying to remember a film...?

It's a fantasy film, which was probably released between 2000 and 2006. The only things I can remember are the setting (Tundra - think Norsemen and Vikings) and the ending, which had the dead hero being sent off on a burial ship and some blonde woman who's also on the ship committing suicide over his body. There is a small chance that it was a TV movie, but having trawled through IMDB I haven't found anything. Any specific detail, like an actor's name, would be nice. Thanks guys, but Conan was the film which reminded me of this one! more

Open Question: Dreamland Film Adaption Should be Soon!!!?

I am in love with the book "Dreamland" by Sarah Dessen, Someone NEEDS to adapt the book to film already. but what i want to know is who do you think Should play Rogerson and Caitlin and the other secondary characters? People with are closest to the description Sarah Dessen writes in the book. I personal think if Avan Jorgia Dreadlocked his hair he could play Rogerson but I dont know about Caitlin. Summary: On the morning of her 16th birthday Caitlin O'Koren wakes up to find that her older sister, Cass, has runaway with her boyfriend. Having spent her whole life in the shadow of her beautiful and brilliant sister, Caitlin suddenly finds herself thrust from the familiar darkness of invisibility into the glaring light of public and parental scrutiny. She has no choice but to forge a new identity, metamorphose into someone other than Cass's perfectly average little sister. The question, of course, is how. Enter Rogerson: the dreamy-eyed, dreadlocked, BMW driving, pot-smoking bad-boy who makes all the girls swoon and leaves Caitlin reeling from his indescribably sexy aloofness. Has Dessen created the stereotypical love interest? Absolutely. Has nearly every girl since the beginning of time had a crush on a guy like this at some point in her life? Pretty much. However, beyond the immediate and intense physical attraction there lies a more complicated reason for her piqued interest. In him she sees an opportunity to reinvent herself. "I saw myself, then, setting out across uncharted territory, places Cass had never been or seen or even heard of. My world was suddenly wide and limitless, as vast as the sky and stars I'd been dazzled by earlier, and it all started there with the door he was holding open for me." From that moment on, Caitlin and Rogerson are utterly inseparable. It's an exciting time, full of new friends, strange places, first experiences, and new love. (Dessen does an excellent job of capturing the incomparable feeling of first love, that time in your life when a day spent watching him fix his car seems like a really well spent day.) Rogerson's dangerous lifestyle is intoxicating, and Caitlin soon finds herself drinking in his wildness and "filling up the empty spaces all those second-place finishes had left behind." The very second Rogerson's fist makes contact with Caitlin's jaw for the first time, her once perfect dream-world comes crashing down, giving way to a very real nightmare. The beatings continue, become more frequent and intensely violent, but Caitlin never tells a soul or reaches out for help. She has become addicted to the way Rogerson makes her feel like someone other than a "little-sister, pretty girl's sidekick, or second runner-up." How does she cope? With drugs to numb the pain and turtlenecks to hide the hurt. In the wake of Rogerson's wrath, invisibility is the one thing Caitlin desperately desires --- ironically, back when she was living in Cass's shadow, invisibility was the one thing she most feared. more

Resolved Question: Title of an English tv production (comedy drama) produced in the early to mid 1990s?

Sorry for being very vague, but I saw a tv programme back in the 1990's and cannot remember the title or even that much of the storyline. I thought I would ask here on the off chance someone could help. The basic storyline as I recall was set in the 1950's, an earnest young man fell in love with a blonde girl, who was seeing someone else. The man worked in an office as a junior clerk, and would often day dream. There was a slight musical element to the film as well, with several interludes when a character would burst into song - ok so my description isn't great but would love to get the title if possible. Hope someone can made some suggestion more

Resolved Question: What is it about Steven Spielberg's film 'Duel' that makes it so good?

It is a film that simply revolves around a man being chased by a nutter in truck. It is all set in the desert and has minimal dialogue. Yet the film is gripping - I loved it as a child and I think it might be one of my favourite films ever. What makes it so good? more

Open Question: Any movie like Old Country for Old Men (spoilers)?

I watched this movie back in 2008, and it just sticks out. The film was much more complex than what I thought it would be. The villain was the perfect actor, the protagonist was interesting, and the setting suited me. But, what really made this movie stand out was that it was realistic and yet enthralling and intense. The good guy doesn't win in the end because he is simply outmatched, or was just s*** out of luck. The villain is unpredictable and shows what "evil" is or just the difficulty of life in the real world. There are tons of hidden themes, particularly the role of luck. Are there any other movies of this caliber? more

Open Question: is this article true?

heres the article word for word from scrapetv.com Washington, D.C. – Over the last forty years the zombie has become one of, if not the most, pervasive and popular of all movie monsters. From the first appearance of the creatures (in their modern form at least) in the legendary horror film ‘Night of the Living Dead’ the idea of the dead returning to life to feed on the living has haunted many a dreamer and many a multiplex. Branching out into books, comics, and videogames, the zombie has well and truly become an integrated part of western society and will likely continue to stalk our world for many years to come. Perhaps because of that popularity Zombies have entered into mainstream society and even into the world of science. A recent work by a group of Canadian researchers, for example, created a mathematical model of how a real zombie outbreak would occur and how governments should react. Though the creatures are, as far as we know at least, completely fictional that model has startled U.S. Government officials into action. A new initiative by the Obama administration has put the fear of the zombie into the real world with its efforts to predict the progression of the zombie outbreak and will need to be done to combat the undead villains. “I have set forth an initiative to a specially formed group of scientists, military personnel, law enforcement agents, and other experts to try and predict how a zombie outbreak may in fact occur. I want to be clear here. We are not predicting that such an event will occur in the near future but it is incumbent on us to prepare for such an eventuality,” said President Obama. “This program will detail a number of different scenarios under which a zombie outbreak might occur. It will track it’s progression from numerous points throughout the United States and in neighbouring countries and will make recommendations as to how we should deal with such an occurrence should it happen in the future.” Because of the slow moving nature of most zombies a widespread outbreak has often been seen as unlikely should it be inspired by some type of viral or bacterial agent. Such mass outbreaks are likely only with a wrath of God type of scenario. “Since the release of Night of the Living Dead the government has looked at possible scenarios involving such an outbreak but most dismissed it simply because of the extreme unlikelihood of something like that occurring. Of course a major terrorist attack on American soil was considered very unlikely as well and that thinking ended up being quite flawed,” said Scrape TV Apocalypse analyst Seth Morris. “The real issue, just as it was with terrorism, is that without an identifiable threat, an incident, it’s very hard to convince Senators and Congressmen to potentially put their jobs and reputations on the line to okay the type of financing required to start a full scale study. They need to be sufficiently satisfied that the American people are scared enough to vote for them in the next election should they okay the funding. Unfortunately it is often too late by then.” Many experts predict that the greatest threat related to a zombie outbreak is likely to be the panic created in the public at large which would cause many to abandon jobs, loot, and commit other crimes in the face of the impending apocalypse. “The biggest concern here is Barack Obama himself. He has so many things on his plate and is asking for so much in the way of change and finance that he runs the risk of wearing out everyone, including his supporters. If the zombie program fails in gaining financing the first time around then it may never gain footing and leave the American public and the world vulnerable to zombie extinction,” continued Morris. “What Obama needs, and ultimately what the world needs, is some kind of small outbreak that will show Americans how dangerous flesh and brain-eating zombies truly are. That would cause a shift in the standard thinking and inspire real change and protect humanity from a zombie holocaust.” Due to the age of the population many experts believe that any zombie apocalypse would likely begin and be most heavily concentrated in Florida 11 months ago more

Open Question: Name of soundtrack at a end of a film about the affair between a female teacher and a male student?

... the setting is in a school(residential academy) in a western country, may have been in America. Husband of female teacher had a serious alcohol problem. The female teacher was played by a well known popular Hollywood actress. The soundtrack presented the beauty, the heartbreak of the relation very well, could have been composed by Bach, Handel, the like. more

Open Question: If you're not interfering with filming, is it okay to hang around a location where filming is going on?

my favorite TV show is filming near my house, so my friend and I rode our bike around the street where they film. They were just setting up, but they're actually filming tomorrow. Would it be creepy/annoying if we rode our bikes by again tomorrow just to observe the actual filming/maybe catch a glimpse of the cast? I'd feel kind of awkward, since they saw us today and we asked the crew if they were filming...but since we wouldn't be constantly nagging them or actually interfering, would it be okay if we rode by tomorrow? It's a pretty low-key filming place, so I think we'd probably be the only ones watching. more

Open Question: Name of a short film! It's black and white, about a man sticking flies onto his wall?

Please help me find the name of a short film I saw on late night TV in the UK in the mid 90s. It's black & white, silent (I think), and features a man removing the wings and legs from flies underneath a magnifying glass using tweezers. He then attaches the flies to the wall of his room in a kind of grid, a few inches apart, very carefully using the tweezers. My memory's a bit hazy about he next part - I think he goes insane trying to catch the final fly because he has only one space left on his wall. The short film ends when a beautiful woman arrives at his house. She has a mole (beauty spot, freckle, whatever) above her lip. The man sees it and murders the woman. We then see him using his tweezers to attach the woman's mole to the wall in the final space. Fin. If it helps, I think at the very beginning of the film, the camera moves through a market town, up a cobbled, spiral set of stairs and into the mans house. I recorded this film by accident in the early/mid nineties. It was on UK TV directly after a movie I had recorded late at night. Probably Channel 4 or BBC2. This has been bugging me for years (excuse the pun), so if anyone could help I would be overjoyed!! more

Resolved Question: Homosexuals, curious, what is your opinion on these stats?

Just wondering, i have not administarted my view point so dont attack infuenced by strawman fallacy. PLEASE DONT BEAT AROUND THE BUSH, * One study reports 70% of homosexuals admit to having sex only one time with over 50% of their partners * One study reports that the average homosexual has between 20 and 106 partners per year . The average heterosexual has 8 partners in a lifetime * Many homosexual sexual encounters occur while drunk, high on drugs, or in an orgy setting * Many homosexuals don't pay heed to warnings of their lifestyles: "Knowledge of health guidelines was quite high, amongst homosexuals but this knowledge had no relation to their sexual behavior" * Homosexuals got homosexuality removed from the list of mental illnesses in the early 70s by storming the annual American Psychiatric Association (APA) conference on successive years. "Guerrilla theater tactics and more straight-forward shouting matches characterized their presence" . Since homosexuality has been removed from the APA list of mental illnesses, so has pedophilia (except when the adult feels "subjective distress") * Homosexuals account for 3-4% of all gonorrhea cases, 60% of all syphilis cases, and 17% of all hospital admissions (other than for STDs) in the United States . They make up only 1-2% of the population * Homosexuals live unhealthy lifestyles, and have historically accounted for the bulk of syphilis, gonorrhea, Hepatitis B, the "gay bowel syndrome" (which attacks the intestinal tract), tuberculosis and cytomegalovirus * 73% of psychiatrists say homosexuals are less happy than the average person, and of those psychiatrists, 70% say that the unhappiness is NOT due to social stigmatization * 25-33% of homosexuals and lesbians are alcoholics * Of homosexuals questioned in one study reports that 43% admit to 500 or more partners in a lifetime, 28% admit to 1000 or more in a lifetime, and of these people, 79% say that half of those partners are total strangers, and 70% of those sexual contacts are one night stands (or, as one homosexual admits in the film "The Castro", one minute stands) . Also, it is a favorite past-time of many homosexuals to go to "cruisy areas" and have anonymous sex * 78% of homosexuals are affected by STDs (20) * Judge John Martaugh, chief magistrate of the New York City Criminal Court has said, "Homosexuals account for half the murders in large cities" * Captain William Riddle of the Los Angeles Police says, "30,000 sexually abused children in Los Angeles were victims of homosexuals" * 50% of suicides can be attributed to homosexuals * Dr. Daniel Capron, a practicing psychiatrist, says, "Homosexuality by definition is not healthy and wholesome. The homosexual person, at best, will be unhappier and more unfulfilled than the sexually normal person" . For other psychiatrists who believe that homosexuality is wrong, please see National Association for Research and Therapy of Homosexuality * It takes approximately $300,000 to take care of each AIDS victim, so thanks to the promiscuous lifestyle of homosexuals, medical insurance rates have been skyrocketing for all of us * Homosexuals were responsible for spreading AIDS in the United States, and then raised up violent groups like Act Up and Ground Zero to complain about it. Even today, homosexuals account for well over 50% of the AIDS cases in the United States, which is quite a large number considering that they account for only 1-2% of the population * Homosexuals account for a disproportionate number of hepatitis cases: 70-80% in San Francisco, 29% in Denver, 66% in New York City, 56% in Toronto, 42% in Montreal, and 26% in Melbourne * 37% of homosexuals engage in sadomasochism, which accounts for many accidental deaths. In San Francisco, classes were held to teach homosexuals how to not kill their partners during sadomasochism * 41% of homosexuals say they have had sex with strangers in public restrooms, 60% say they have had sex with strangers in bathhouses, and 64% of these encounters have involved the use of illegal drugs * Depending on the city, 39-59% of homosexuals are infected with intestinal parasites like worms, flukes and amoebae, which is common in filthy third world countries * The median age of death of homosexuals is 42 (only 9% live past age 65). This drops to 39 if the cause of death is AIDS. The median age of death of a married heterosexual man is 75 * The median age of death of lesbians is 45 (only 24% live past age 65). The median age of death of a married heterosexual woman is 79 * Homosexuals are 100 times more likely to be murdered (usually by another homosexual) than the average person, 25 times more likely to commit suicide, and 19 times more likely to die in a traffic accident.Source(s): http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news… more

Resolved Question: Need the name of a horror movie?

It was shown on the horror channel (UK) about a month or so ago and looked really low budget, it was either American or Canadian. The film was about 5 girls driving home from watching a varsity football game at a rival high school, and the driver is panicky because its her mothers car and she doesn't want to get caught out after curfew or damage the car in any shape way or form. One of the passengers insists on taking a shortcut that she knows, and the driver agrees but it turns out they made a mistake and are now lost. They stop at what looks like some sort of cheap tavern, and 2 of them head inside to ask for directions, 2 remain in the car and one wanders about for no apparent reason. The driver and passenger return to the car and ask where the 3rd girl has gone, after a conversation with the others, they see the 3rd girl arrive and tease her by driving the car slightly whilst she chases after it, then stopping to let her catch up, then driving again. They crash into the back of an SUV and all panic, before driving away. It isn't long before they are running low on fuel and they're being tailed by the SUV from before. They eventually pull over and a manic woman in business attire with a shotgun gets out and slaps them around and forces them to undress. She drives off, leaving them scared and violated and they get dressed and try to recover before she finds them again, and chases them down the highway in pitch black. The girls in the backseats throw things out the windows, trying to hit the SUV but eventually they pull over and the woman attacks them and steals the car keys and leaves again. They push the car to the side of the road, cover it in leaves and camouflage and turn off the lights waiting for a car to pass for help. Eventually the maniac car reappears, looking for them and they stay silent in the dark. Eventually the maniac uses the car keys to unlock the cars, making the lights flash and she chases the girls out of the car with a shotgun and into the forest *although one girl remains hidden inside the car and siphons gasoline from the maniacs car. Eventually they regroup but the maniac kidnaps one of the girls and drives away with her. The film goes on like this, with each encounter getting worse and worse with each girl getting in turn beaten and tortured by the maniac woman. One of the more studious and conservative girls gets locked in the trunk and driven away and the rebellious tomboy gets raped offscreen with a screwdriver. Eventually, the girls steal the maniacs car, run the maniac over and try to find authorities, but they are once more tracked down by the manic who begins screaming stuff like "DON'T FORGET YOUR MANNERS!" and "DON'T SPEAK UNLESS SPOKEN TO!" eventually, after beating each of the girls into submission and mutilating them with something from her toolbox, the girls manage to overpower her and beat her head in with a blunt object before circling her, and take turns stabbing her in the torso with a knife before eventually dousing her in gasoline and setting her on fire, they drive away to the nearest town leaving the corpse behind only to discover all the locals have been murdered, most likely by the lunatic who had been stalking them. Throughout the story whilst being stalked and tortured the girls each learn to appreciate each other and dismiss the annoying habits that grind each others gears, and come away from the experience almost like sisters. I can't remember how the film ends but I think its as they're driving away silently looking for help. Thanks in advance :3 more

Resolved Question: I Need Help Understanding F-Stop, Iso, Shutter Speed etc.!!!!?

So, I'm taking a photography class, and I'm using a Canon AE-1 Program. The lens says it's 28 mm. I have a roll of film 24 exposures that I need developed by Friday. I'm using Kodak 125 plus -x film. I really don't understand what an f-stop is, the shutter speed, and all I really know about the iso is that it has to be set at 125 ( which is the same as my film). Could you give me like a mini tutorial about those three things? Is there are fix setting they all have to be at? I'm really confused!we've only had one class so far, where i got the camera from him and he explained general stuff and how to develop the pictures. more

Open Question: looking for a movie title?

Hi, i'm looking for a movie that i saw a while back, probably in the mid 90's. It was about a bad kid, probably early teen, he bought drugs, porn magazines etc. he stole a motorbike in one scene and if i remember rightly it ended up in a river. in another scene there was a wooden house that got set on fire by arson and i think they were trapped inside it. there is also another kid in the film, i think he kind of looked up to the bad one and was almost badly influenced by him. I can't remember exact details about the film (i think the title might have had "bad" or "boys" in it, and i think it was a true movie) any help finding this film would be appreciated Thanksnot the good son, but thanks anyway :D it's a bit more bad and more crime if i remember rightly more

Voting Question: What are some good British historical movies or TV programmes?

I've just finished watching a series of TV films called Sharpe. Sean Bean was great (as usual) but I enjoyed the stories too. It is set in the Napoleonic Wars with the British fighting the French, and even though the series is quite old (1990's) it is still better than the shallow rubbish we get on TV today. If you could tell me about any other British programmes that are set in the past then I would very much appreciate it! I'd also be interested to hear about movies that are similar to Pride and Prejudice or the Duchess. Thanks! more

Voting Question: What is the name of this comedy horror movie?

It as an adaptation of beauty and the beast and I cannot seem to find it anywhere. I have not seen it in years. From what I can remember, it was set somewhere like the islands or it was a foreign film with lots of grassland and hills. Anyway, the beauty finds herself going toward the beast's lair and he kills all her friends I think except her. The movie is kind of funny, like ironic. Please help!I believe it was in English and set in the modern day. It appeared as if it were from the 90s or 00s. more

Resolved Question: I have a query about my dreams. Is this lucid dreaming and am I a lucid dreamer?

In my dreams, I would always be aware of the events in the dream around hours in the dream but I believe to be mere minutes in real life. To be more specific, it seems that it FEELS like I witness events in the dream worth of hours while it's just around around 1 minute- 5 at maximum in real life because I would always wake because of my alarm clock. Now is this a lucid dream? I don't manipulate any of the elements that appear; for example, I'm sure I can fly if I wish to in the dream but I chose NOT to and just let the dream environment stay untouched and it appears to resemble real world physics and society like gravity, weather, and real life interaction of people you passed while walking in streets. Now if some of you might say that I'm actually manipulating the environment to resemble real life setting, I'm not sure myself whether to agree or disagree with that one. The second part, which I believe is crucial, is that I don't think I'm anywhere on the actual dream events at all. It feels like I'm somewhere above (like an angel or even god) that watches people like a movie and the dream scenes shifts from one to another but I'm sure it's all in the same "film". Then when I wake up, I can recall many of the details (showing that I'm mentally strongly enough to remember them) at which point I write them down. I would like to mention that I may be seeing things dreams like a director or god in my dreams because (In real life) I'm currently writing a script and I'm composing the plot scene by scene. more

Resolved Question: challenge for anime fans?

I've been trying for a long time to find out what this anime is and I've asked a few times and all people say is spirited away. and it's not spirited away I own and love all of miyazaki's films. This anime movie was probably made when I was a kid I remember seeing it when I was between the ages of 7 and ten back when sci fi use to play anime on Saturday mornings. I'm 23 now so it was release between 95 and 99 maybe earlier. All I remember is that there is this creature that travels around the world destroying and absorbing everything in it's path. It's a black create with a white mask for a face. It's set kind of post apocalyptic and the man character is a young woman maybe about 19 that has set out to kill the creature for killing her family. I remember her having some kind of strange mechanical wing that let her fly. I've been trying to figure out what it is for years and can't find the answer. If anyone has an idea let me know THIS MOVIE HAUNTS ME. Because I remember it being really good and watching it with my brother but nether of us can remember more than this. please let me knowit's not a series. more

Resolved Question: Should I major in film or education? What steps should I take?

I love to help people and I have volunteered around kids through tutoring and on many different occasions and I would love to go into education and become a teacher, working my way up to leadership positions such as principal and superintendent. I would also like to study abroad, and teach in many different locations, acquire a masters, and a doctorate in education as I would also like to research and elevate the graduation rate. I can just picture myself walking around a middle school as a principal, making sure everything is going well and having a good relationship with my students, able to maintain good discipline and relate to them as well as preparing them to be academically successful. I also have another dream of becoming a film director, producer, and screenwriter. Back when I was in middle school, I used to want to do this, but I ultimately gained different interests as I skipped being involved in drama as an extracurricular activity for one whole year. Back when I was in the seventh grade, I also wrote a screenplay that I like a lot and I love to write and come up with ideas and I would really like to make a difference doing this. I could also picture myself walking on the set of a film, getting everyone organized and directing a movie, too as I have been a student director before for a stage play. I also go to New York City with my family many times each year as we see many plays. It's just so fun! I used to go to LA often, but I like New York much better than LA. Overall, I have included that I would like to pursue a career in both education AND film; however, I'll be going off to college next fall and I am confused as to what major and minor I should pursue. Are there any suggestions as to what steps I should take to achieve my goals? It's somewhat confusing! Any advice and info is greatly appreciated! I love to learn and apply my knowledge! Thank You! more
