Free Download Antivirus Program Questions asked

Open Question: windows vista wont update?

I recently had a problem updating windows vista. for about 6 months my computer simply wouldn't allow me to access the update site and the program in the control panel simply wouldn't download. As well as this another of the problems i was experiencing was when i would click on a link within a search engine i was being transfered to a second search engine which had nothing to do with the link i had clicked. I contacted the microsoft support team and they told me to down load a malware remover tool. after downloading it and running a full scan for the first time it picked up 11 trojans that had been missed by my antivirus software. the link to download this free program is... http://download.cnet.com/Malwarebytes-Anti-Malware/3000-8022_4-10804572.html?part=dl-10804572&subj=dl&tag=button You will find that when you download it it will attempt to connect to the web to check for updates, the chances are that if you had the same virus as me it wont allow you to update it either, but if you run a full scan it will remove the malware on your PC. I hope that someone else finds this as usefull as i did. more

Open Question: Now that I have ESET Security on my computer, should I get rid of Symantec Antivirus?

My computer really slowed down the past few days, and after consulting my mother about it, she recommended I download the 30 day trial of ESET security, like she has on her quick computer. I did, and it slowed my computer down at first. That's when I remembered that I heard this: "You must disable any other antivirus programs you have or ESET might not work properly." I just emptied my Recycle Bin and temporarily disabled Symantec and my comp is running ok like it was. Should I just get rid of Symentec? Are there any good free antivirus programs I could get when my ESET 30 day trial is over? more

Voting Question: My computer has a virus and I don't think I can do anything about it.. What now?

The other day I noticed that google's links were redirecting me to weird sites. (And not where it was supposed to take me..) I found out that it was spyware but didn't have time to get rid of it. A few days later I turned on my computer again and this time it was much worse. I couldn't even click on anything. The desktop and taskbar were flashing and tons of error report windows popped up. I turned off my computer and then a few days later (today) turned it on again. The desktop and taskbar were not flashing but I did get the error reports again. I have been told on here to download different types of free antivirus programs. But how can I if I can't even open up the internet? Is my only choice to take it somewhere like the Geek Squad and have them fix it? I am aware of the fact that they're expensive but I just do not have any idea of what I can do to fix it if my computer is so unresponsive.. more

Resolved Question: Free downloads of antivirus.?

I downloaded AVG's free antivirus protection; however, after I decided to switch to another company after the "30-day trial," which I did not know would only result in 30 days, I cannot remove AVG. When I went to "My Computer" and attempted to "remove" this program, immediately after hitting "remove" the program began to "download" again. When I hit "stop," it responded, "Are you sure you want to stop downloading AVG antivirus." The program was "doing the opposite." I then went into "explore" and attempted to remove AVG from program files, however, it now prohibits it saying cannot remove DLL file or states the file may be copyrighted or "in use." The program is not in use, so I am confused as to why it will not allow me to remove it. I have already downloaded "Avast" antivirus, so I think I have two antivirus programs running...not sure. My question is how can I remove "completely" any files that say "dll" or the components to AVG? The "free" versions are not free, rather they continue to prompt to "buy" or warn that the computer will not be fully protected. Any suggestions as to the "best" and only the best "free" programs to download (that remain free)? Is it better to purchase antivirus protection? Thanks. Thanks to "everyone" for your informative responses! I ran the REVO Uninstaller and WHAT A DIFFERENCE!!! Thanks...10 starts! :)10 stars !!!! more

Resolved Question: Should I use Malwarebytes Anti-Malware as well as avast!?

I have avast! 5.0 Free Antivirus, which has protection for viruses, spyware, rootkits and other features similar to an Internet Security Suite like Norton - I know this because it says it here: http://www.avast.com/free-antivirus-download I want to know if it is necessary to download an anti-spyware program like Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, that scans for lots of different types of malware, to use along with avast!. Resolved Question: good non-intrusive yet free antivirus program.?

Ok, so I had AVG Free for awhile, but got really pissed when i relised that i really had no control over it. Meaning that when it found something it thought was a virues(Like a keygen), it would do its thing and not let be involved in the removal process. I had no control over what files it was removing and what files it wans't. I downloaded malware bytes free version and that has been doing me well. though lately, for some reason, it has not been working. So my question to you is, Do you know of any good anti-virus software that will let me do what i want to do, and yet is still good at detecting the virues. thanks. Also, how are you guys liking the new Yahoo answers? more

Resolved Question: Malware or something else?

Details: 3-4 days back, I got a message saying I have very low disk space on my C: (system drive), I was shocked to see that as i knew I had somewhere around 18-20 GB free disk space on that volume. So I checked what happened out of the blue and I found many folders in my Windows\temp folder. They were all named like tmp0000000, tmp00007b75, tmp00005eeb etc. And every folder had files of around a GB or more and some data was being continuously written on it even when i was checking it. So I updated my antivirus software (Bit Defender Total Security 2009), I did a full system scan. It found a few things and I deleted most of them. There were few viruses which were in F: system restore. So I cleared F: system restore. And rebooted my PC. Even after reboot the problem was still there. So I downloaded my another trusted malware remover, Malwarebytes Antimalware software, Updated and again did a full scan. It showed two corrupted registry keys, out of which one it deleted and one still remains. (Disable.security.updates was the name). Now am still facing the same problem of filling of disk space, but now it either gets deleted automatically, or because I remove all other files from temp folder except for the one folder in which the file is eating all my disk space, but after a minute or two even that folder gets back to 0bytes.. The folder remains and also a file with the same name as folder remains as well. So now what I ask is, Is this supposed to be a malware/virus problem or just that system going nuts??? Also if it helps, I have formatted my PC very recently (month back or so), and all the programs I am using currently are the ones that I used to use previously as well. So there are no new additions. Hoping for a reply soon. If you need more information, I will provide it. Thank you in advance.Additionals: Used CCleaner already. But it doesn't clear up windows\temp files... I have Kaspersky on my brother's PC, I have already scanned with 4 AV's (Bit Defender, Malwarebytes, Kaspersky, AVG)... Nothing produced anything, except BD, which showed that something in F: system restore was affected but it couldn't delete it as the affected file was inside the archive. Anyway thanks for the help... Scanning in safe mode now.. Will update as soon as I finish with it... more

Voting Question: how to get rid of my previous antivirus protection?

ok so this is the deal. my computer is saying that "windows reports that computer is infected" blah blah blah and its rly pissing me off cuz all it does is give me pop ups that says this file can't be executed blah blah blah it cant open blah blah its dangerous when obviously its not. but i think we previously had a free trial norton antivirus program but now i want to download a different antivirus system but its not allowing me and i think its cuz of the norton one. so i tried to uninstall it, but everytime i try to get to the add/remove program, its not allowing me saying that it also cant be executed. so wat do i do now? more

Resolved Question: How do i get the virus off my PC!?

My Windows PC got infected with a virus disguised as an anti-virus suite...? I didn't download the trojan on purpose; I'm really careful when it comes to which sites i visit and what i download... I knew immediately that it was a virus because i remembered hearing about it awhile back. It told me my computer was infected, pretended to run a scan of my hard disk and then listed some fake viruses that it accused me of having. It then brought up a fake window that looks like the one that tells you whether you have a firewall and antivirus running. The window claimed that i was infected with spy-ware. The thing then kept trying to connect to The Internet using Internet Explorer (which isn't my default browser) and tried to get me to pay for it to remove the fake virusses from my computer. I disconnected my computer from The Internet and tried to run my real antivirus software (AVG Free 9.0, regularly updated) but the fake on wouldn't let me, i just kept getting messages saying that the registry entry for any application i tried to run was missing. The virus kept trying to get me to purchase it by telling me over and over again that i was infected and brought up the same message as soon as i would close it. After i had tried to close it many times, it started bringing up loads of Alert Icons in the toolbar, it created hundreds of them and did so so quickly i couldn't close them down fast enough. After rebooting my computer several times i had the same problems but noticed that if i opened an application as soon as the desktop appeared, the virus wouldn't stop me (if i waited a few more seconds it would do). First i tried running my antivirus and doing a scan, but the virus was creating so many taskbar icons it slowed my computer down to the point that the scan would stop. Also, the window i was running a scan in would be permanently situated behind the viruses messages. I was forced to do a system restore and this seems to have got rid of the damn thing. i was just reinfected with the same virus and system restore no longer gets rid of it It is stopping me running applications (even if i can run them i usually get runtime errors I cant update my antivirus or scan the computer, nor can i install programs Is there a solution that doesn't involve completely wiping my PC? It also wont let me close it in task manager more

Resolved Question: How can I get rid of the remnants of the Antivir Virus and possible Adware?

I am a college student and recently bought a used Dell Precision M60 laptop with Windows XP Professional. I was waiting to install Norton Antivirus until I went home to get my dad's copy of it, but only a few days after I bought the computer, it became infected with the the Antivir virus. Everytime I tried to go to a new website, a page would come up, warning me that the website might contain a virus and that I should buy protection from Antivir. Once, my laptop screen turned blue, and it said that it had been infected with a trojan. The name of it was "Monster", with several letters and numbers behind it. The warning also said my computer was performing a "file dump," and then my computer shut down. It scared me at first, but I soon realized that there was no trojan and that it was still just Antivir. I ran malware megabytes and it found and removed several files infected with antivir. When I used the internet again. it was better, but everytime I use a search engine, and clicked on one of the results, my computer is redirected to another search engine or an advertisement. I have to type the url directly into the address bar for it to work. Other random pop-ups with advertisements also come up often. For instance, when I was in the middle of writing a letter on hotmail, an ad came up for virus protection. A few times since I have run Malwarebytes, my computer gives me the message that my computer has to restart because the D Com server process launcher service was terminated unexpectedly. After that, another message pops up saying that windows closed a program (the Generic Host Process) to protect my computer. Then my computer restarts. This seems similar to the time when my computer shut down with the fake trojan message. I don't know if my laptop is still infected with remnants of Antivir, or if antivir is completely gone and my laptop just shuts down and goes to other websites because something is still messed up in the computer's system. I think that it might also be infected with adware. I went to a website for free screensavers--i think it was screensavers.com. When I went to the website, it said that something was downloading to my computer. I immediately left the website and looked up information about it on the MacAfee site advisor site. The website said, "In our tests, we found downloads on this site that some people consider adware, spyware or other potentially unwanted programs." I ran malware megabytes again, and it found 1 file for adware. Yuck! So, I researched and installed AVG the antivirus protection program within a day after I ran Malware megabytes. When I went to the google website and clicked on one of the search results, AVG blocked the page and gave a warning that malware was detected. I did a scan with AVG, and it didn't find anything so I don't get the messages anymore. I tried to go online yesturday and an advertisment for Clear internet service came up, instead of my homepage. I could not use any other website. I was able to get online today, but my computer server is still directed to other servers when I try to use search engines. I know one thing I will never go without antivirus protection again, that is for sure! What can I do to fix my computer and remove the possible remnants of Adware and Antivir? Thank you very much! more

Voting Question: AntiVirus software that all of a sudden appeared wont let me open up anything without buying it!?

I downloaded a PSP ROM for an emulator earlier and now all of a sudden some antivirus software from newsoftspot.com is on my comeputer and refuses to let me open anything unless it is the purchase page for their AntiVirus software. I cant visit add or remove programs, I can't visit my files, I don't have a save point for a rollback and I doubt that it would let me access the button to do the rollback in the first place. The ROM did work, it worked just fine on my PSP- came with correct files and everything and I played the game right afterwards. Then when I went back to try and websurf a little small error window popped up saying the internet is infected. It says this for everything I try to open up except the purchase page for this idiotic software (That doesn't even have a free trial or something that I could use to just get this stupid stuff off). I need a solution. One that will get this stuff off without the sacrifice of my files and everything on it, and I don't have money to take it to some shop. Can someone help? I've just downloaded the trial version of antivirus software on my laptop and tried to launch it, but as it was going through setup, I got a message that said my computer doesn't have enough memory to run the program. This doesn't sound good, but I'm not sure how to fix it. I'm guessing it's more than just deleting files to free up disk space. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. more

Resolved Question: Re: Best professional AntiVirus program for home computer?

I installed a free download of Avira AntiVirus program for my home computer, however, a pop-up keeps appearing regarding "purchasing" a subscription for "safer" protection. What is the BEST protection, PLEASE. Do free programs provide as much security as purchasing one? If so, which is the best to download for free (without the continuous pop-ups), and if purchasing is safer, which is recommended and what might I expect to pay? I have been told that Norton causes a computer to work slow...is this true? Please state your source, i.e., you have tried different programs free and/or purchased, etc. Please state the pros/cons for what you recommend. Thanks a lot!AKA A suggested Avira Premium Suite because it tested 3rd...which program tested in 1st place for overall competency? Just curious...would the 1st place competitor be a better purchase? Which company tested 1st place? Thanks again~ more

Resolved Question: Malwarebytes: advice please?

I have questions about Malwarebytes: 1. It's a free download and free first time scan, right? 2. I already have Norton, and will that interfere with each other at all by having these 2 programs? 3. After it does the first scan, and if it doesn't find anything, then would I have to remove it or pay in order to get the full program and the updates? 4. Does it have a good enough reputation where we're sure that it doesn't read a false positive to nudge a person into buying the full program? I've never had a virus to my knowledge until the other night I was playing online Solitaire at a particular website that I visit almost every night for a couple games and have been on and off of there for a month at least; (not yahoo games) when something hijacked my full screen and wanted me to download their antivirus program saying I had hundreds of trojans and blinking all these red numbers. It froze the screen and wouldn't let me out by clicking on the X's on the boxes, and a download screen popped up and scared me a bit....until I did shut the internet down through the task manager. I shut down the system, rebooted in safe mode and full-scanned twice with each program. SpyHunter found a suspicious file and it was deleted. And Norton caught the original download program I think, it and quarantined it within seconds. Then, removed it, I hope. Since I don't have a lot of experience with malware, as I'm pretty sure this was, or maybe it's what they call a Rogue. I don't know if it was sneaky and put something on my system. I've checked through the start up files looking for anything odd, but I haven't seen any changes to my computer but it has, of late, become slower on loading sites through IE 8 , which I don't really like much anyway. And I haven't changed configurations, and haven't added toolbars, and have disabled lots of add-ons. I use Norton, Ccleaner, and SpyHunter and I use them every time I get off the internet and a few times during the day. And, maybe I do it too much. I am rather paranoid about keeping my system clean. I just totally freak out at the thought of having to reformat the whole thing. So, could I please have some honest (please be nice to an old lady :) testimonials as to the reputation of Malwarebytes? Thank youThis is the filename that Norton reported as removed: with no further action needed it said. setup_2005-13[1[.exe (packed.Generic.279). I think I read that this packed.Generic IS a virus....but was it actully caught in time? Norton reported the "activity" and path name as: C:\documents and settings.....temporary internet files\content.ie5\8fr3mxhc\setup_2005-13[1[.exe. Then I think Spy Hunter found the 8fr3mxhc. Then there was another part Norton found as the "Origin": http://antispyware-scane1.com/download/setup_2005-13[1].exe Later, I think Norton found that the http website was ok, under their "statistical submission" . But when I finally got to notify Norton, they couldn't tell me if all that was actually off my computer... they wanted 159.99 to have their techs run a remote special system scan and I couldn't do that much. Especially over my fear of doing any online transactions right then.oh gosh you guys don't click on that. I didn't realize it would actully put that link on there as accessible.. Please don't..and there's not way to edit that again. more

Resolved Question: Need Help with Computer security issues!?

About two days ago my mom's laptop computer was infected with something like 2-3 trojans because she accidentally went onto a malware infected site. Now the thing is, she has Avast! Free Antivirus (v5.0.377) and Spybot - Search & Destroy (v1.6.2), and they both seemed to get rid of all of the issues that she had. But now there's something that her computer does that I don't know if i should be worried about or not - every time her system starts up now, the tray icons for avast and spybot never load, even though everything else does. I checked the system numerous times with both programs and they don't register any other problems, but the fact is that even though they register the option for a system tray app to load as being turned on they never show up. Now the other thing is, I also have tried doing a system restore and that seems to bring everything back to normal, then, a windows update that needed to be downloaded and installed that didn't occur till after the restore point in question goes and does it's thing, I restart and everything again seems to be okay and then all of a sudden the try icons completely vanish from the tray like they never existed (they aren't hiding since I actually configure them before they vanish to always show in the tray), I start up the antivirus and everything reads okay and active (just no tray icon) and then after several hours the spybot will either glitch up and become inoperable even though I scan with both programs constantly up to that point. So obviously somethings still majorly wrong with my mom's laptop and the programs that I've used so far aren't getting whats deep down in there, so my question is: Does anyone know what the hell this thing or problem is and how to remove/fix it? Please be as detailed as possible when answering, so far the computer seems to be ok aside from what I mentioned above, but I don't want to take the chance that this is going to snowball and all of a sudden get much worse. I don't care how complex the solution is as long as you can provide a detailed explanation of how to go about doing it or provide a link to a site that does. Thanks in Advance! P.S. I really don't want to re-image her computer but if it comes down to that then so be it, primarily what I'm looking for is solutions that involve anything but that (optimistic I'm sure).Wow, you guys are really good at responding quickly! Anyways, I ran msconfig and it registered all the spybot and avast stuff as running. So i guess that means its not that. Hmmmm............well thanks for the info so far Optimus and Supervisor, I still have no idea about what's going on but hopefully this will get resolved soon. I'm gonna try running Malwarebytes on the system along with maybe that SUPERantispyware that froggy was talking about. Hope that will be more illuminating! Please continue to post guys, this is really helpful! P.S. @ snea I: uh.......the only thing that link points to (at least for me) is a thing on dating in vancouver, so.....uh.......???? more

Resolved Question: mcafee problems after downloading.?

I was offered a free 12 mo. trial of mcafee antivirus. It came at a good time cuz my older one expired. I downloaded everything successfully so the program said. I uninstalled the old program first. My computer is super slow now. A day after I successfully(or so the mcafee told me) downloaded everything, I no longer have a mcafee icon in my system tray and when I open the security center it tells me I have to reinstall as some components are missing. When I check my control panel it says mcafee is running and protecting my computer. I was not impressed with their online help via virtual technician who wanted to check all the files on my computer which I was not comfortable with. If this is what my trial looks like I'd just rather uninstall this program and get something else. Can anyone help?thank you so much. no problem uninstalling mcafee and downloading microsoft. As soon as I figure out how to vote on my own question you'll get some extra points.thank you so much. no problem uninstalling mcafee and downloading microsoft. Resolved Question: How to get rid of the Internet Security 2010 virus?

I am working on my dads dell desktop, he got attacked 2 days ago. I thought I had gotten rid of what attacked him yesterday when I worked on his computer, but then he called me this morning and told me it was back and it was worse than before. So obviously I had missed something. I have done a little research on the net on how to get rid of this specific fake program, but everything I am seeing wants me to either download spyware doctor, or open taskmgr. The problem, is that I am not able to open taskmgr. The virus is blocking me from accessing taskmgr and system restore. It pops up with an error message telling me, Application cannot be executed. The file is infected. Please activate your antivirus software. Now, no he doesn't have any AV software that he has paid for. He does have AVG Free and Malwarebytes, neither of which are picking up on the IS2010 virus. I guess what I need to know, is if there is a way to shut down the virus software so its not blocking me from accessing parts of windows or if there is another way to manually remove it. I appreciate any help you can give me. more

Voting Question: I installed AVG antivirus and Avira personal antivirus. How do I turn one off and leave the other on?

Hello, I downloaded both free antivirus softwares and installed them. Avira suggests that I don't have more than one antivirus software running at the same time but I cant see how to turn off AVG. I try to exit, as it is a menu option under File in the program, but it still remains in the tray. Any suggestions? Or maybe it is OK to have both running at the same time? I just wanted to scan my computer with a couple of different programs and these were free and highly rated. thanks much more
