Resolved Question: Apple Mac or PC? the age old debate...?
I am going to be starting studying Law and need a new laptop for my course. I am wondering weather to go Mac or PC My current thoughts are; I am so sick of sorting out all of the crashes and errors on my computers/laptops I need something which is future proof as i cant afford to buy a new computer every couple of years Mac's: -more virus resistant & office software comes pre-installed so less money spent on extras (i know there are free virus protection & open office for PC but free stuff always seems to lead to viruses) -They dont slow down as much over time like PC's do, so would last longer? -I will spend less time reading error messages and having to spend ages sorting problems out -would there be compatibility issues with my old files/transferring files to PC's/using my camera etc? PC: -Cheaper to buy the hardware -more software available (is this even relevant to me though? not planning to play games on the notebook) I'm quite confused as to what to go for, but at the moment am leaning towards Mac after years of crappy PC's Any good arguments for and against please?! moreResolved Question: How do I remove a virus from my laptop?

First my system: On my laptop I am running Windows Home Prem. 7, two browsers, IE8 and Mozilla Firefox. I have Zone alarm, and malwarebytes (no problem with it), and Avast virus protection (free version). Here is my problem: the Avast says that my "realtime shield" needs to be turned on AND that my Mail Shield is off and needs to be turned on. I can't figure out how to do this in Avast. Now, can someone out there please help me with the Avast settings and/or advise what I'm doing wrong. This is a recent occurence as Avast was working fine last week. I've tried System Restore to an earlier date and it wont do it either for some reason (can't remember). I've downloaded stuff from Kim Komando, the pc goddess, but feel they are safe and probably need to remove some. Sorry for the lengthy one here. Any advise will be most apprecaited. moreResolved Question: I have Avast, Threatfire, Superanti-spyware, & Malwarebytes is this good?
Hey guys, the reason why I'm asking is because 1 week ago my computer caught a virus that didn't let me get onto the internet, I had to ask my friend who is an IT to fix it for me, and he did it for free and he said he had found 71 viruses on my computer and he completely fixed the problem. Managing to save everything on my pc. However, I'm thinking the reason this happened was because I was without an AV protection system on my laptop for like 3 months. I used to have Avast, and somehow I deleted it because I was annoyed at the updates it made everyday. Now I know it is important to have an AV on your computer. However, I never got rid of Super-Anti Spyware OR Malwarebytes. When I caught the virus I ran both of these programs and they didn't detect a single thing. For my friend to say that I had 71 viruses freaked me out... why didnt these programs detect anything? I can understand that they missed some, but all of them?? When he gave me my laptop back he recommended AVG (a free AV too) and said he had never heard of aveira or avast. I heard that Avast was better than AVG so I downloaded it again, paired it with Threatfire, but am now wondering if I should actually pay for a better quality Anti-Virus software. I cant remember what he used, but that's what he does for a living he fixes computers and what not. So he didnt have a hard time doing it. I just dont want to have to bug him with this problem anymore... sorry was long. I just wanted to explain my situation in detail. If you guys think what I have should be good, then I guess I'll stick to it. But if it does nothing then I'd rather delete this stuff and pay good money for something that will keep my laptop running. So is the combination of Avast, Threatfire, Super-anti-Spyware & Malwarebytes any good? Hi there! I own a Dell PC with Windows Vista. I've had Windows Vista for years on end now, equipped with AVG virus protection. We have the free 8.5 version. I know close to nothing about virus protection, but lately, there have been so many pop-ups on our AT&T web service, and AVG has continously warned us about multiple web threats (which I can't explain, because my family operated off of MSN broadband for years, and had no virus problems). AVG has also prompted us to update to version 9.0 for quite some time, along with the multiple virus threat prompts. Now that I have pressed the update and scan functions, AVG isn't throwing up at any red flags at all, and I'm able to use the web freely! Is the computer REALLY infected, or was the 'threat' flag meant to just push us towards an update? And in addition to that, Windows hasn't given us ANY warning messages about needing to shut down because of problems. What's going on? Try super antispyware.com This is the best. It removed all the advertising pop ups I was getting. I also tried malaware bites anti malaware. Also tried avast antivirus. what I did was downloaded all these three programs. They are all free. Free to download free to scan and free to remove viruses. Great. Then I rebooted my pc. Just before it goes back on keep pressing on F8 key. Several times til it finally comes to screen with a list of starting points. Click on Safe Mode. Thats what your computer will start on. Then just give it time to restart. Then you 'll come across a choice of weather you want to continue on safe mode or a restore point or something like that. Just click on yes for continue on safe mode. Once you get there, Run all three programs. One at a time. Then reboot your computer and presto.. mission completion. You might reboot your computer couple times and redo the process of F8 key, just because each ani virus program asks you to reboot to complete. But once you catch those virus check in the vault or virus chest, which ever one and delete the viruses. After all is done. You can reinstall or install if you didnt have it before avg virus protection. AVG virus protection didnt not catch the pop virus. Anyways, your gonna have to uninstall avast anitvirus in order to install avg. The other two leave them on. They are good. So far I am testing to see if this cleaned my browser from the hijack virus. So far it seems ok. Just be patient, because scanning the whole computer takes hours and hours, well it did with mine on each scanning. good luckFor hijack browser, you can also try to uninstalling explorer, and reinstalling back. See if it helps. moreResolved Question: pc problems that are driving me around the twist!?

I really want a Mac (because it appears gorgeous) and my experience with Safari and iPod Touch totally blew me away.I already researched on my own for a bit (4 hours) and I need help please. 1. Would the magic mouse work for tablet drawing on photoshop or other paint programs? If not, is the Wacom Bamboo CTH-460 compatible? 2. Is the Mac (of 2010) compatible for gaming? I recently let a friend use my pc in the process he managed to download a pretty nasty virus. I have, from what I can tell, gotten rid of the virus. I am currently running, Spybot search and destroy, Malware Bytes, CCleaner, and Advast (all free editions) for protection on my pc. The Advast is out of date cause my trial has expired. The others are updated before every scan. Before I got the virus I had Firefox and chrome as my web browsers. I also had Yahoo Messenger installed and all of these programs were working fine. Now that we have gotten this virus and removed it I can not get google chrome to work or my yahoo messenger. I tried to uninstall both programs and have still continued to have the same issues. Google Chrome comes up as this: This webpage is not available. The webpage at http://www.google.com/ might be temporarily down or it may have moved permanently to a new web address. More information on this error Below is the original error message Error 102 (net::ERR_CONNECTION_REFUSED): Unknown error. Where as yahoo messenger said it was having connection issues and now won't even let me install the .exe file from the download site. If there is any information you can give me on what to do so that I might be able to get these 2 programs back on my pc it would be greatly appreciated. I look forward to seeing your answers thank you! moreResolved Question: Can I run 2 anti-virus programs on the same PC?

Can I also install the free one as a backup until my professional grade program expires and run both in the mean time? moreResolved Question: Questions about Threatfire?
NOTE: I asked this question earlier today but I got unsatisfactory answers so I'm asking it again with slightly different details. I was thinking of getting Threatfire (still deciding on it) as an extra layer of protection for my PC. I researched Threatfire and saw that it has "Real-time behavior based protection". What concerns me about Threatfire is that will it cause conflicts with anti-viruses or anti-threat software that has a "real-time protection" feature? I heard that Threatfire isn't supposed to clash with other antivirus software but I'm not really convinced about it. Also, does Threatfire work along side well with most Internet Security suites (paid and free). Does Threatfire have any gripes or issues I should look out for? I heard rumors that.... -Threatfire contains a keylogger. -Threatfire causes many people's keyboard to stop working. -It slows down your system or it could crash your system! Are some of these rumors true? Despite all these concerns, I still might get Threatfire in the end but should I get it or not? NOTES: I plan to put Threatfire on my second laptop, a IBM Thinkpad running Windows XP SP 3. My IBM Thinkpad has the free versions of Avira Anti-Antivirus, MalwareBytes, and Superantispyware. Even though Avira Antivir doesn't have some sort of "real-time protection" feature, I'm still concerned about it because I'm planning to buy an antivirus software soon. moreResolved Question: What is wrong with my pc?

I just recently reformatted my PC because I had a virus. My Anti-virus stuff obviously wasn't good enough so I thought maybe I should ask around. I always seem to get stuff that messes up my computer when I'm trying to protect it. Links and a little info would be nice. moreResolved Question: help with viruses, malware, adware and spyware and security programs?
[this is the part where i get confused...correct me if i'm wrong] MALWARE is a general term for any program that will harm or attack your computer, and under malware we have VIRUSES, ADWARE, SPYWARE which attacks the computer in different ways either via malicious programming, pop-up advertisements, programs disguised as safe programs etc. [so for security and protection i have....] malwarebytes anti malware installed which takes care of MALWARE then i also have AVG antivirus free edition which takes care of VIRUSES AND SPYWARE (which, in my understanding is under the general term malware which is already covered by MALWAREBYTES) [my questions.....] is there a redundancy or overlap in the purpose and function of these programs? can i delete one of them and still get 100% protection from all threats? can you suggest a protection scheme for my PC? (what programs to install etc) moreVoting Question: I discovered an anti-spyware scan on my PC. What should I do?
Recently I was on a website where a virus threat appeared out of nowhere and I feel worried by this latest threat. I was then sent to the anti-spyware scan on Windows Internet Explorer and a scanning process was performed; it discovered threats on document folders and hard drives. The red labeling said "Your computer could be infected". But I have the AVG Free 9.0 software that scans for viruses and other threats by itself and I have no idea that anything out of the ordinary could appear when nothing goes wrong on the Internet - ever. I want to have a full system cleanup but I'm not sure if that's going to work. I already have the AVG software installed on my PC and I don't want to download any more security programs unless I want to. And with the Windows Security Alert that already detected trojans and ready to remove them, I'm unsure about the effectiveness of cleaning up the computer with downloading software that may or may not be safe. I don't know how often such scans would appear out of nowhere when I'm anywhere on the Web (I was on Photobucket when I discovered it), but if I don't want to see that again, then I must not go back to using Internet Explorer again. On Mozilla Firefox I never run across such scans. And I use a laptop but not a regular computer with the monitor regularly. What do I do if I unintentionally run into anti-spyware scans that I may or may not trust? If I ever trust them would I do what I'm instructed to do? If I don't trust such alerts would I lose protection of my PC forever? moreTop Free Virus Protection For Pc Links
