Free Virus Protection For Pc Questions asked

Open Question: Questions about Threatfire?

NOTE: I asked this question earlier today but I got unsatisfactory answers so I'm asking it again with slightly different details. I was thinking of getting Threatfire (still deciding on it) as an extra layer of protection for my PC. I researched Threatfire and saw that it has "Real-time behavior based protection". What concerns me about Threatfire is that will it cause conflicts with anti-viruses or anti-threat software that has a "real-time protection" feature? I heard that Threatfire isn't supposed to clash with other antivirus software but I'm not really convinced about it. Also, does Threatfire work along side well with most Internet Security suites (paid and free). Does Threatfire have any gripes or issues I should look out for? I heard rumors that.... -Threatfire contains a keylogger. -Threatfire causes many people's keyboard to stop working. -It slows down your system or it could crash your system! Are some of these rumors true? Despite all these concerns, I still might get Threatfire in the end but should I get it or not? NOTES: I plan to put Threatfire on my second laptop, a IBM Thinkpad running Windows XP SP 3. My IBM Thinkpad has the free versions of Avira Anti-Antivirus, MalwareBytes, and Superantispyware. Even though Avira Antivir doesn't have some sort of "real-time protection" feature, I'm still concerned about it because I'm planning to buy an antivirus software soon. more

Resolved Question: What is wrong with my pc?

My computer is stupid it goes unbelievably slow, it restarts for no reason, and nothing responds ever. when i ran my virus scan and it came up with nothing, then i ran ccleaner and it didn't make a difference then i ran Registry Easy and it made it work for about a day then it stopted working again. i have a toshiba satellite running windows 7 and my virus protection is Avast free ananti-virus what is wrong with it? more

Resolved Question: Best FREE Anti-Virus software?

I just recently reformatted my PC because I had a virus. My Anti-virus stuff obviously wasn't good enough so I thought maybe I should ask around. I'm looking for some really great, but free programs for: -Virus protection -Spyware protection -Adware/Malware protection I have looked myself but I don't trust my own judgment. I always seem to get stuff that messes up my computer when I'm trying to protect it. Links and a little info would be nice. more

Resolved Question: help with viruses, malware, adware and spyware and security programs?

[this is the part where i get confused...correct me if i'm wrong] MALWARE is a general term for any program that will harm or attack your computer, and under malware we have VIRUSES, ADWARE, SPYWARE which attacks the computer in different ways either via malicious programming, pop-up advertisements, programs disguised as safe programs etc. [so for security and protection i have....] malwarebytes anti malware installed which takes care of MALWARE then i also have AVG antivirus free edition which takes care of VIRUSES AND SPYWARE (which, in my understanding is under the general term malware which is already covered by MALWAREBYTES) [my questions.....] is there a redundancy or overlap in the purpose and function of these programs? can i delete one of them and still get 100% protection from all threats? can you suggest a protection scheme for my PC? (what programs to install etc) more

Voting Question: I discovered an anti-spyware scan on my PC. What should I do?

Recently I was on a website where a virus threat appeared out of nowhere and I feel worried by this latest threat. I was then sent to the anti-spyware scan on Windows Internet Explorer and a scanning process was performed; it discovered threats on document folders and hard drives. The red labeling said "Your computer could be infected". But I have the AVG Free 9.0 software that scans for viruses and other threats by itself and I have no idea that anything out of the ordinary could appear when nothing goes wrong on the Internet - ever. I want to have a full system cleanup but I'm not sure if that's going to work. I already have the AVG software installed on my PC and I don't want to download any more security programs unless I want to. And with the Windows Security Alert that already detected trojans and ready to remove them, I'm unsure about the effectiveness of cleaning up the computer with downloading software that may or may not be safe. I don't know how often such scans would appear out of nowhere when I'm anywhere on the Web (I was on Photobucket when I discovered it), but if I don't want to see that again, then I must not go back to using Internet Explorer again. On Mozilla Firefox I never run across such scans. And I use a laptop but not a regular computer with the monitor regularly. What do I do if I unintentionally run into anti-spyware scans that I may or may not trust? If I ever trust them would I do what I'm instructed to do? If I don't trust such alerts would I lose protection of my PC forever? more

Resolved Question: are these free security software is a good choice? are they compatible with each other?

Voting Question: How can I get complete security on my PC if I download from http://download.cnet.com/windows/ ?

I have looked through their top downloads for the security section and I am hoping to find complete security with the free software available to me. I am wondering, will I have complete protection if I add these to my "arsenal" of anti-internet- problems? - Ad-Aware Free Anti-Malware - AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition - Spybot - Search & Destroy - ZoneAlarm (The free firewall) In your opinion, which of the three is better? AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition Avira AntiVir Personal - Free Antivirus Avast Free Antivirus Lol wow they all start with the letters "AV" more

Resolved Question: How To Protect My Laptop Free?

I have a brand new Compaq Cq61-414NR Notebook windows 7 home premium. I had it a little over a month and I already had to do a system recovery. This was because of Norton Internet Security, which I hate with all my heart. Everytime your subscription runs out it completely messes up your computer as if to say thats what you get for not buying a new liscense. What are some free softwares I can download that are simple and effective? what should I look out for like programs not to install and things I shouldnt do. The problem that norton caused was a disk error and my pc could not even run check disk to fix it. I couldnt system restore or boot in safe mode. but the free trial comes with the computer..I have other virus protection to install. but is it safe to remove norton regularly or should I use the removal tool? Explain what should I do to make sure that no errors ever happen and If they do I will be able to recover from them? Remember FREE! more

Resolved Question: Vista Antispyware 2010 invaded my computer! Are their warnings real?

Tracking software found! Your PC activity is being monitored. Possible spyware infection. Your data security may be compromised. Sensitive data can be stolen. Prevent damage now by completing a security scan. System hijack! System security threat was detected. Viruses and/or spyware may be damaging your system now. Prevent infection and data loss or stealing by running a free security scan. Stealth intrusion! Infection detected in the background. Your computer is now attacked by spyware and rogue software. Eliminate the infection safely, perform a security scan and deletion now. --- Those are just a few of the messages I get, and it won't let me browse using Internet Explorer anymore. I have Windows Live for my security and virus protection, and I did a complete computer scan to remove anything harmful that might have been there. I still have 6 months left on my subscription, and the software is up-to-date. But the Vista Antispyware is still showing those messages and preventing me from accessing the internet. So I downloaded Mozilla Firefox from my brother's computer and installed it onto my computer, and it works just fine. But the threatening messages are still there! And I can't delete Internet Explorer from my computer. The Vista Antispyware wants me to buy into their subscription, but I don't want to because the Windows Live one is still working and covers 3 computers in my home at a better price. What should I think or do? Is it true and maybe the Windows Live software can't detect it? It's really annoying because it pops up warning messages every few minutes and sometimes gives very convincing names of certain threats that is apparently trying to access my computer at that moment. The Vista Antispyware icon is sitting in the notification area, and I can't delete it. It's nowhere in the Control Panel, and I can't right click it. When I follow some of the prompts, it always lead me to a webpage to buy into its subscription, and I can't navigate anywhere in Internet Explorer. HELP!!! more

Resolved Question: I have Windows Vista Home Premium. Do I need another Antivirus/Firewall/other security?

I have Windows Vista. Do I need another Antivirus/Firewall/other security? The PC came with a short trial of Norton but that is expired and I don't want to renew it - would like to use what comes with Windows Vista Home Premium if that is enough. Or download free software. But my first question is.... do I need anything else or am I safe with only what comes with Windows Vista Home Premium? If I check the "Security Center" it tells me I have the following: Windows Firewall - ON (Norton option is OFF) Malware Protection - Antivirus - seems to be none now that Norton Anitvirus is OFF Malware Protection - Spyware and other malware protection - Windows Defender is ON (Norton option is OFF) So does that mean I have no virus protection at all right now? Or does Windows Defender cover that? Clicking a link in my Security Center, takes me to this page for Windows Security Essentials (on microsoft.com). It seems there is additional free antivirus and malware software there that I can download. Should I add this? Why don't they just include it in Windows if it's necessary? http://www.microsoft.com/security_essentials/default.aspx Thx for advice that answers my questions.Thank you all for your answers. I did download Microsoft Security Essentials and now I do have free antivirus. It ran a check upon install and I was virus-free. My "HP Total Care Advisor" does not see it working - says I have no antivirus. Will look into that next. Thx again to all. more

Voting Question: Buying new computer-what should I get? (Please give lots of opinions)?

I want a new computer. My old Dell Optiplex GX620 crashes every 40min. due to a hardware & virus issue. I'm not overly concernced with whether its a mac or pc... but lets get to the chase.... I want something decently fast and that can play movies(like standard itunes definition, no HD is needed. And i know what you will say about HD but I really don't care). So I essentialy want something with; intel core duo processor of atleast 2GHz or any dual core processor, a 256mb or greater video card, and b/g/n wifi(bluetooth is a bonus). Memory, 2GB is enough and its standard, and i just need a 250GB+ hardrive(just about standard too). I'm mainly looking at Dell because it has good reviews and other companies-HP, Toshiba, others are in my experience and knowledge bad because they have so much extra software(experience w/ HP printers make me wanna never look at them again). So I'm down to a mac or a pc. Price for hardware is my biggest concern. I'm familiar mostly with windows but either OS is okay with me. The runners up are the (these are all Dell's) Insprion 13, (configured @ $800), Inspiron 15(configured $824), Studio 15($1,039), Studio 17(about same as 15), Inspiron Zune HD(desktop $603), Studio Slim Desktop($834-best hardware for price). As for the macs I'm sticking to the cheap ones; mac mini, macbook, 13inch macbook pro. Everyone says macs are easier. I'm somewhat good with computers and hope to be an extremely advanced user one day. But I mostly use Opera(internet browser), iTunes, Microsoft word, and an application for my Sony HandyCam DCR-SR47(which will suck because it sounds like it won't work with a mac). I have 3 antisoftware/virus/trojan/active protection software on my Dell but somehow I still got a virus(partially because they're free or it expired). So I don't know what to do. I have enough money for anything I listed but I'm not sure how much I want to spend. In the end PC OR MAC? and why? and does the hardware matter when its running snow leopard(I don't plan on doing much gaming). Please recommend particular software/hardware that you found awesome/cool/useful/pointless more

Voting Question: How do i get rid of these viruses?

I have these viruses on my laptop that stop you from doing anything. so when i tried to install a virus protection, the virus(es) crashed my system and reeboted it. it has done this 4 times now. Originally i had this "Control Centre" that said i had like 500 viruses but the control centre itself was the virus. i managed to delete the file using cmd but now it seems that there are more parts left on my pc. One of them is pretending to be windows security and i keep getting internet explorer opening this random page that says searching for jean grey on it. There are a load of pop ups opening aswell that say download free malware protection but they are part of the virus. I know it may be kind of hard to understand but please help. Give me any ideas on how i could get rid of these viruses without formatting my hard drive and reinstalling windows. Cheers. more

Voting Question: anyone who REALLY knows how to get rid of a computer virus?

I dont do much on my pc but watch movies on fancast, email, facebook browse, listen to live radio, etc... I dont really download anything or handle any business on it, just leisure. Couple of things here...I went a short time w/o anti-virus and therefore got seriously infected so I had some "computer guy" come out that I found in the phone book. Really nice guy but it took him like 3 visits and $200 to clean out my computer. He installed the AVG free version of anti-virus, a defgramenter, spywear blaster, spybot and malwear bytes. I dont always run these programs but the anti-virus automatically runs every night. I run the other programs once about ever 2 weeks or so. Well a few months later and my computer is already buggin out. I am getting pop up messages about my computer being infected...I know it is but I also know better than to click on the box !! also my cd rom isnt working ever since he "fixed" my pc. Additionally, my virtual memory is low. I usually put on live radio using the windows player for my baby every night and now the music keeps cutting out and only plays for like 2 seconds every few minutes. I know its a lot of problems but I cant afford another $200 to have someone come out. I want to know if there is any specific programs I can buy to completely remove all of the viruses and keep them from comming back? I dont understand if I have all of this protection how am I getting viruses?? Also, what to I need to buy to get more memory? how to I fix my cd drive so it will play again? it wont even spin the cleaning disk!! aslo, what do i need to do to maintain my computer on a regular basis? and lastly, is it harmful for my computer to go on facebook?? any help or suggestions would be most appriciated. thx oh yeah and for some reason I keep getting an internet explorer message that the page cannot be displayed when I click on, say for instance, a tab on craigslist?? more

Resolved Question: Computer slow a few days after restore (Hardware or Software problem)?

I run a windows XP (SP2) desktop, it is about 2 years old. Intel(R) Core(TM)2 CPU 4400 @ 2.00GHz So instead of reinstalling my windows, I used repair which just restores the system. After repair, my pc runs very fast, but after using it for a few days, it starts gradually slowing down until it reaches a point where even typing or moving my mouse is laggy. However, this only happens when im multitasking on my windows. If i end all the big processes (antivirus, downloading programs, MSN, etc.), then my computer runs normal again. Another thing i'd like to mention is when im watching a youtube video and I try to open a program, it lags insanely bad for a short amount of time. When I watch a video, even if its loaded, it still lags. I do not use my PC 24/7 but sometimes I leave it on, for downloads. My CPU usage is not necessarily high when my computer is lagging so its probably not a RAM problem. I also have over 50% of free disk space on all local disks. My PC does not have any viruses, I use Rogers Online Protection, and i am not experiencing any other difficulties except for multitasking slowdown. I've tried many things already, I've tried to cancel windows updates, stop using anti-virus, I've checked all my running processes (searched them on internet) and they were fine, I've recorded all the running processes of when my pc was slow and i've checked them after repairing my windows. None of these solutions worked. Is this happening to anybody else? Is my PC too old? Could it be a hidden virus? Should I stop downloading and see what happens? Is this a case of software or hardware? I don't want to use my computer without being able to download and use the internet at the same time, or cancel antivirus. And I don't want to repair it every few weeks/days. I am not a pro at these kind of things, so plzz help! more

Hello, i have asked for help about the problem I have with my pc; about a month or so ago, it didn't want to work with norton internet security 2008, 2009 or 2010, so I changed to McAfee total protection 2010 (yay it worked). During the time which i was having trouble with my norton product, my pc got infected with a virus with a name like "search bar uninstall.exe" or something like that. McAfee found it straight away but the damage has been done ='( none of my search bars work anymore, I tried "Microsoft Fix It" but it said there was no problem -_- then i tried to talk with a microsoft professional and if i entered my product id, the support may be free ^_^ but tevery time the product id did not work at all. Resolved Question: What scans, protections, and backups should I be using for my PC?

Yesterday I encountered the worse computer virus I ever had and I don't want to do go through that ever again. I purchased Spyware doctor because several people have told me it works really well but what else should I be doing? My friend said if I was doing some type of backup once a month, anytime my computer caught something I couldn't remove, one click on the backup file and it would restore my computer to the time when I backed it up. Are people doing this? Is he full of ish? What program are they using if they are. Preferably free. AND I've heard about defragging but I don't know what it does or how often I should be doing it. I've heard it takes hours though but makes your computer run faster. Is there truth in that? Thanks for your help. more

Resolved Question: Is it recommended to use both these programs together?

I'm currently using Kaspersky Internet Security 2010 as my security suite on my PC. I recently obtained a free license of IObit Security 2009 Pro. Should I use both these together? Since both are using Real Time Protection? Will these two programs conflict with eachother? I'm using IObit as a malware/remover since I was previously using MalwareBytes Ant-Malware to do the job and use Kaspersky for removing virus's and also malware, but I heard it's always good to have another malware remover because not all software catches everything? Am I OK with that I'm using?IObit is a anti-malware not an anti-virus so I know I can't use two anti-virus's together. more

Resolved Question: I have the svchost worms, how do I get rid of them (computer virus)?

I have Windows Vista, protection Bullguard v8.7, and idk what kind of svchost worms I have only that I have them. Voting Question: What free anti-virus software is compatible with Windows 7?

Anti-vir and AVG apparently are not. I had Vista, but I upgraded to 7, because I thought it would get rid of the BSOD. (While I had Vista, I installed Anti-vir.) I thought it was the antivirus software that was causing the problem, so I took it off, after upgrading to Win7. It seemed to work, as I was not getting any BSOD but I was now not protected from viruses. Then I found out about AVG. I installed it yesterday, and today I got a BSOD, the first in quite some time. My school used to supply those with PCs and laptops with Norton anti-virus, but this year they did not, so my protection was not up to date. Oh, and I cannot emphasize enough that it has to be free! I cannot pay any money for it. I spent $40 on the upgrade, and that's it. I just don't have money. more

Resolved Question: Removing Viruses From Your PC Completely?

I have AVG Free installed at the moment and is my only real virus protection. What freeware can I download that WILL actually get rid of my viruses. I'm sure my laptop is already infected and I have no way of removing these infections. I do the "quarantine" "heal" "remove" options after scans but I doubt they are actually being removed since my PC still runs slow and makes noises which I am assuming has to do with virus. I've tried Windows Live One Care, AVG, Bit Defender, Spyware Terminator, Webroot Spysweeper and none of them have done it for me. Any recommendations on software and how exactly I could remove viruses using that? I have Windows Vista Home Premium, yes I know it is a horrible OS but I can't get W7 at the moment and I hate Mac. I also don't want to pay for the Virus Protection/Removal Software. more

Resolved Question: Best free antivirus etc. ?

On my PC at home I have a few different freeware programs, like an antivirus, an anti spyware, I think there are three altogether, (one may have been a firewall) and with that mix I'd never had one single problem with my computer. However I can't remember which programs they were, and now I'm fairly sure I've some virus or adware thing going on on my netbook, (the trial of McAfee which came with it is nearly up, also, I hate McAfee) so can anyone recommend a good/the best antivirus, anti spyware, or just the best set up you've found for protection of your pc? I'm not interested in piracy, I'm looking for freeware. (e.g's AVG or Avast! etc.) Thanks! more

Resolved Question: Regarding free programs to have running for virus, spyware, malware, etc.?

I have upgraded my OS to Windows 7. Windows Defender is built-in and provides protections against malware & spyware (assume they are "almost" the same. I also have installed free Avast Antivirus (now set to "normal" as opposed to "high") Reason to follow. Dunbar Pappy has given me great info., but the OS 7 is new so, I am confused due to conflicts with anti-everything (joke) running. Kim Komando advises we can run use several "anti'-spyware" programs, but not to have but one antivirus and one firewall (as multiples will conflict and slow down my computer). I have not installed a firewall, as not sure if Windows Defender has one or not or if it's built into IE8 or Firefox (both of which I use). I looked in Control Panel (in new OS 7) at security and it told me the following (amongst other things that were OK) "Windows Defender and Avast antivirus are turned on and running 2 or more antispyware programs can cause computer to run slowly". Exact wording!!! That's where I get confused as to "spyware, malware and antivirus" running on my pc. Will one of you experts (including Dunbar Pappy, pls advise me as to what I should add or remove to be fully protected yet not slow my pc down----free programs only as I know they are good and out there. Thanks so much, if you can assimilate all of this. My name is Lewis. more

Resolved Question: My two PC's are downloading at a much different rate with the same modem. Why?

Hello, I have a 5 year old PC with XP and a 30M modem that is downloading at between 26-28M. I also have a 2 year old pc with Vista that when I hook that one up to the modem gives me download speeds of 250k-4M. I only have one hooked up at a time and have no router in between. I've swapped out cables and have had the modem checked. My guess is that it is one of two things. Either the port that the cable plugs into in my newer PC is damaged and not allowing a clean connection OR I have a virus on the slow PC. I'm only running the Free AVG virus protection on it. Could a Virus or viruses slow my newer computer down that much? If so, what anti-virus software would you suggest I purchase? I have heard good things about a package called Viper and of course there is always Mcafee. Thanks for your help?Ya, I mean I think everyone knows that Vista sucks, but the differences in speed are just too great. My new PC wasn't always this slow, even when I had a 10M modem on it. I guess the bottom line is could a virus(s) and or spyware cut my speed so dramatically? more
