Voting Question: Is it safe for a laptop video card to be running at 185 degrees Fahrenheit?

According the my downloaded CPUID Hardware Monitor freeware, my Elitebook 8530p runs excessively hot while 'idling' on a table in a cool room. The forums I have checked suggest that the hottest a GPU should get is 90-100 degrees, but my ATI Mobility Radeon 3650 heats up to a measured 185 degrees (!) when playing Arma 2, a highly stressful game. The CPU cores and hard disk also heat up to between 100 and 120 degrees. According to the software at least. I have heard that an overheating GPU should either cause the computer to shut down or at least crash my game, but the only effects are incredibly low framerates and a sweaty lap from the heat and noise of the fan running. If I shut down the game, or even just minimize it so the CPU load returns to near normal, the game runs fine again, even if the GPU is still very hot. I suspect that there is a year's worth of dust blocking a vent somewhere, but my question is whether I am likely deep frying my graphics card by putting it under such stress. And is it possible that the computer's internal thermometers are inaccurate and giving my high readings? Close to 200 degrees seems hard to believe.Edit: All the temperatures in my post are in Fahrenheit. Are GPUs safe up to 100 degrees Celsius? I also left out that I smelled something burning the last time it was really heated up. When I put my nose up to the largest fan and air intake on the side, the smell was quite strong. I hope and guess that this was smoldering dust and not the components.My core temperature is over 60 degrees Celsius, and I have read that 55 degrees is too hot. more

I really love the game Command and Conquer Red Alert, and I found it as freeware on the EA website. I downloaded the Allied and Soviet discs and mounted the ISO files using Daemon tools. I ran setup in Windows 95 compatibility mode and the game seemed to set up like normal. However, after restarting my computer, and trying to start the game, I get this error message: "the procedure entry point could could not be located in the dynamic link library kernel32.dll." Voting Question: Must-have Mac Freeware?

I don't do too much with my Macbook besides browse the web, do homework (with MSOffice programs, mostly, though I do group stuff on Google Docs), watch videos, and play music. I don't game at all, but I'd like to get the most out of this computar-machine for what I do with it. What are some "must-have" applications (preferably Freeware, for obvious reasons, though I'd buy something that's relatively cheap as long as it has a demo I can try out) I should get? I'm looking mainly for stuff to do with the following: - Google Functionality - My life is on Google (Calendar, GMail, Docs, droid, etc), so anything that makes these services accessible in a better and faster way would be peachy. - Torrents - I use uTorrent currently, although I do like Frostwire quite a bit, it seems a little buggy and system-intensive. Speaking of this sort of deal, is there anything better than PeerGuardian to use alongside it? - Plugins - I'd like to keep to the software that came on my Mac as far as mail/addressbook/itunes/ichat goes, but they're a bit lacking in customizability and even some functionality. Any iTunes plugins or hacks that'd let me play DivX/XviD/etc with iTunes? Anything that'd make iChat a little less...big? Or a way to do video chat via Google on it? - System cleanup - I just downloaded a 15-day demo/trial of MacKeeper and I freaking love it. Considering getting a 2-year subscription, though I wish I could just make it a "lifetime" deal. Is there anything similar or better that's free or cheaper? I have downloaded two .bin files for need for speed underground 2, i mounted them and installed the game using Daemon tools lite, freeware. this i have done before and is easy. Problem: I double click to start the game, it asks me for disk 1, so i mount it and click, then it gives options for Play, uninstall etc. I click play, it asks for disk 2 and it will restart the application, so i mount that and click ok. then it restarts the game and asks for disk 1. The loop continues... Any help on what i should do?Piracy would be tiny if not for a $30 price tag for new movies and $50 for new games. more

Now I have no problem with people who use torrents to download shareware or freeware files and programs - but why do people use torrents to steal media like songs and movies and games. Don't they know that by doing that they are actually harming in the industries from which they are stealing from, resulting (eventually) in less music, fewer movies and less interesting games. Hi everyone, I have downloaded a freeware add-on for the Microsoft Train Simulator and I am having problems installing the file because every time I run the .exe installer to attempt to install the add-on for the game, this annoying message that I have quoted "Qsetup may be used for evaluation only - Setup Aborted" or something like that keeps popping up, any ideas? Resolved Question: Running Windows on an Old Mac OS X System?

I'm am actually quite happy to own an iMac, yet I get bored easily when I'm unable to play Okami at my other home(which I go every weekend.) I played a lot of the Mac games, but they never please me to the limit anymore. I'm rather anxious to figure out a freeware "bootcamp" for this system. I own an iMac OS X Leopard system, over 4 years old now, and not yet with the bootcamp application added later on. I might've researched it wrong though, but I'm confident. I have a friend who is completely awesome at making Game Maker games. We have been wondering for a while how to go about placing it in a website. So that it is playable online without download. I have been doing some research, and I have come up with shareware for the price of $100US and a whole lot of open source programming alternatives to game maker. I know that embedding an executable is not possible nor is it secure for the player. Is there some kind of freeware software that can convert a .exe to a flash game or something? I was downloading some demos for games today, and for most of the demos the download speed was about 50-60 kb/s, and it took like, an hour and a half.. Usually my download speed is about 500 kb/s, and there was one game that downloaded with that speed, and it took 5 minutes. The file size wasn't that different from the other demos I tried to download. The only thing was that this last file that downloaded quickly was freeware, and was a whole game, the others were just demos. Is that why the demos downloaded slowly? Why is the download speed for some downloads slow and fast for others? more

I want to play some games on my PC, but my computer is really old. I want to get a new, better computer, but I can't at the moment. I don't know much about computers, so I don't really know any details about mine. Anyway, the only games I've been able to play so far are The Sims (the first one), Worms World Party, and some freeware games I've found on the net (with really retro graphics.) Most other games I try to play on it come up with some error, usually saying something about directx or something. I already downloaded this thing and the problem persists, so I assume that it isn't the real problem here. So, basically, I'm looking for games that are about on par with The Sims and WWP in terms of... umm... low maintenance-ness, I suppose. I've been looking into the Fallout games (1 & 2), but I'm not sure whether they'd be possible for my computer to run or not. So, yeah. I couldn't install a game, because when i tried to open the application (.exe) an NSIS error popped up. I had downloaded this game (WarRock and it's freeware!) from various sites. I did some research in google and found out that one of the possible reasons for an NSIS error to appear might be a failing HDD. At first I was like: ''Yeah right!'', but then I thought I should give it a try, so I tried to launch the installation from my other HDD (D (the possible failing one is C)) and it worked! I have the game installed. So what do you think? my mac is super fast, it has a great connection speed for some of the games i can play on it. basically its an awesome, user-friendly, utility or industrial computer... but its no fun at all. i have searched for first person shooters on the web and found out there is a list of freeware first person shooter on wikipedia. but i have run out of all the fun games there. does anybody know where i can find some freeware downloads? more
