Limited Or No Connectivity Problem Questions asked

Open Question: Unable to obtain IP address on Windows XP?

Okay so my internet seems to have stopped working here recently for no apparent reason. I can no longer obtain an ip address and end up with limited or no connectivity. My computer is connected to a network adaptor that is plugged into the wall which is connected wirelessly to another adaptor that is connected directly to a modem. Usually when such a problem occurs, I can simply power cycle the network adapters and the internet usually works again but now I've power cycled the adaptors and the actual modem itself and I'm still not able to connect. Any ideas on how to fix this? more

Voting Question: What is the best Router for a wireless laptop to TV set-up in my home?

I'm doing away with satellite tv and switching to boxee. My tv and laptop are in the back part of my house and sometimes have limited connectivity (the desktop computer with the modem and router-currently a t-mobile hot spot router- are in the front). Distance wise, I should have no problems, but there are walls between the two. Are there certain routers that can provide a strong uninterrupted connection, or are there tricks I can use? I don't want to make this switch if I'm going to have trouble watching shows. more

Open Question: Why can't my Acer Aspire 5536-5224 keep an internet connection?

My internet connection at my mom's house is incredibly faulty and easily crashed, but ONLY for this computer. For every other device, the router works great. The router is expensive (~$120-150) and supposed to be top of the line. I use it with linksys. What happens is that if I do anything like downloading something or opening a webpage (either large ones or multiple in rapid succession), my internet will suddenly have "limited or no connectivity", although it doesn't always inform me of this immediately as it tries to load it. It doesn't appear that using more RAM affects it, either. Taking down my messengers, Steam, and other constantly running internet programs don't make it any easier to crash. Hell, it's not even always a constant thing. Some nights I have no problems, and others it'll crash immediately after I disconnect from the network and reconnect. Is my laptop simply not compatible with the router, or what?My router is in the sunroom of my mom's apartment, behind what I think is a soundproof wall (I think it's the way the walls groove or something; I just know it really muffles sound). I went inside to use the router at one point, and it really seemed to help for a while, but I eventually got the problem again. My router is in the sunroom of my mom's apartment, behind what I think is a soundproof wall (I think it's the way the walls groove or something; I just know it really muffles sound). I went inside to use the router at one point, and it really seemed to help for a while, but I eventually got the problem again. But it's only a problem with my computer, because it works perfectly for my iPod Touch, Xbox 360, and my mom's ancient laptop. more

Resolved Question: Limited or No Connectivity - Windows Vista - Wired?

Basically, I can't connect to the internet at all. I am wired to the main computer, using an ethernet cable. The problem has existed for about a week now, and nothing is working. I've tried pretty much everything, from turning of the modern to using system restore. The other 2 computers connect fine, it's only mine. Please if anyone has a suggestion it would be appreciated, just no technical answers like "TURN YOUR COMPUTER ON AND OFF" Thank you. more

Resolved Question: Limited or no connectivity on Dell Dimension E510?

Re-formatted a Dell Dimension E510 and installed all the drivers. It said that there were 3 Ethernet controllers, one of the drivers I installed removed one of them. I then plugged in my ethernet cable and it said Limited or no connectivity. I tried uninstalling the other two ethernet controllers and installing all other drivers from Dell support website. Upon research it also said that the problem may have been the modem, but I used the same ethernet cable on another desktop a moment ago and it worked on it. Any other suggestions? more

Resolved Question: limited or no connectivity with windows xp running sp2/upgraded to sp3?

heres the thing, cutting to the chase, i have a computer running windows xp. the computer has 512mb of ram, and a 320gb hdd. right now i have no need for a router, but will get one soon anyways. right now my internet connection is a simple hardwire straight from the modem to the computer. it was working fine. i researched this problem and i ran a couple of loop back tests and it passed. the ethernet card is a built in one, so i got another one, netgear, and installed to the slots in the pc. plugged the wire in and the same thing comes up. i think this proves that its either not a hardware issue wich leaves the software angle still un covered, hears the deal with the software. right now its runninn windows xp sp3. but i also think it cant be a software issue because, i ran ubuntu 10.4, a whole different os from a live cd, and it still doesnt get any connection. so the summary is: i changed the hardware, it doesnt work. i change the software, it still doesnt work. what could possible be the problem? please help im looking for a real computer wiz. thx in advance.ok now here is where it gets really weird. have windows 7 on my new pc and in windows xp mode, it says the internet has limited or no connection when using windows 7 the internet is working finethanks but that was the first thing i did. then i went to the hp website, and downloaded the original drivers, transferred via us to old pc, reinstalled, again no red x, and no yellow signs, but still no internet more

Voting Question: Why does my internet suddenly have "limited connectivity" and stop working when the bars are full?

I think it's a computer problem, because my family's computers/internet work fine. the little yellow exclamation mark of death?! i don't move the computer or anything, there are no reasons that i can see for the sudden limited connectivity. also, when i try to disconnect from the connection, the entire computer freezes. Resolved Question: Acquiring network address loop!!!!!!!?

I know this is a very common issue, but I've been surfing the web for hours with no avail. The problem is probably with the DHCP server, because the connection says "Acquiring network address" for like a minute and then sets a IP irrelevant to my network and displays underneath the ip and gateway"Automatic Private Address" instead of "Assigned by DHCP". And under the connection "Limited or no connectivity". Any tips? ^^My router isnt wireless btw@joelkatz Yes,Yes and Yes more

Resolved Question: Limited No Connectivity/DHCP Time Out Error?

Tonight, I was using my desktop computer that is connected directly to a router using a cord. We had a storm and the internet went out. I called tech support for my ISP. He had me go through the usual things such as unplugging the router and the modem's power then plugging back in. He had me try to bypass the router. He asked me to connect the computer to the router and when it wouldn't detect a connection to the router he informed me that the problem isn't the connection, it's my computer. I was skeptical because it didn't make sense given that our power didn't go out, flicker, or anything. However, my neighbors, who use my internet connection for their xbox, phone, and laptop, let me know that while the net had gone out for awhile it was working for them. I plugged in my old computer, connecting it directly to the router with the same cord that I had used on the first computer. Sure enough, the internet works. I did some research on here for ways to maybe fix the problem. I went to "services.msc" to restart it, then I went to Network Connection and hit repair. As the user had recommended I tried this multiple times. Did not work. Still the "limited or no connectivity notice". I tried disabling the "limited or no connectivity notice" but that didn't change anything, I could still not conncet to the internet. I also tried cheating by using all the info assigned to this computer (ip address, etc) and manually filling them in. Didn't work. Finally, I went to the command prompt to release the isp (which apparently I didn't even at this point have one assigned, it was just 00.00 or something) and then renew. After a bit I got this message "Unable to contact your DHCP server. (or connect to can't remember exact phrase) Then--> Request has timed out. So I'm guessing something got screwed up with the computer that will need to be fixed for me to get connected again? I don't understand HOW this could have happened when the storm did not effect our power, just the internet connection. There have been times the power has gone out and this has never happened. The computer I'm on now constantly freezes on me and then it takes about a half hour to get it to restart, which is why I was using my "spare" computer in the first place. Any insight would be appreciated. Such as what needs fixed, does it require actually taking it to a computer person, or is it something I can do using commands or whatever? I'm NOT smart about computers obviously but I tried all the advice I could find and obviously there's something really screwed up. Thanks.tried a few other things like disabling firewall and checking to see about the roll back driver suggestion put on here once with this error. still nada. hope for some other ideas. It's definitely possible the storm damaged the computer but this is the ONLY thing that's not working on it. more

Resolved Question: Why can't I connect to the internet?

Okay, so I recently asked this, and tried the given answers to help me, but nothing's worked. So here's my situation... So, while I was on a trip to Japan, my parents got a new router and set it up. Its now on a locked network, meaning that I now have to have a password entered. First of all, this all happened when I was gone. Can someone walk me through this process? I can't connect to the internet and I entered in the password, and it says I'm connected to the network, but I can't connect to the internet with either no, or limited connectivity. Both my dad's and mom's laptops connect both to the network AND the internet. Sooo... What do I do? I dunno if this helps, but its on a WEP kinda thing.I'm more interested in getting my laptop to work though, that's my main concern. Is this a router problem, or my laptop's problem? Because the same thing is happening to my brother too. The phone line is plugged in, and the router is a belkin model. more

Voting Question: Random wifi disconnections?

My laptop was recently returned from the manufacturer after some repairs on the power supply and battery. That problem has been fixed but now I am having problems with the wifi. I am starting to randomly disconnect with a 'limited connectivity' warning and the strength of the connection has been drastically reduced. As far as I'm aware the router has no problems because I have 2 other laptops connecting wirelessly to it fine - it just appears to be this one. Is this a simple fix solution or do you think something may have happened to it when it was being repaired? more

Resolved Question: 2 computers in my house won't connect to my router at the same time?

Oh I have a Belkin router if that helps.Rute: What do you mean by "switch"?Grimace: Ya they're both set to receive their IP address automatically. Resolved Question: Why won't my wireless adapter connect to the internet?

My mom uses a Belkin router, and her computer connects fine. When I setup my computer to use Belkin and everything my wireless adapter would not connect to the internet. It says there is "limited or no connectivity". If I plug in ethernet cable directly from my computer into the router then it connects fine but it won't work with my wireless adapter. I don't have this problem when i'm at my house, it connects fine to my dad's wireless network. more

Voting Question: Laptop won't connect to router with WEP connection?

A few days ago I had to change my routers security from WPA to WEP. Before anyone says anything, yes I know WPA is more secure, I had to change it back to WEP so I could connect some older devices to the internet. (I.E. my DS). I know my laptop can connect to WEP secured routers, because I used a WEP before I switched to WPA. I entered the code when my laptop asked me, but whenever it would "connect" my computer would say I have "Limited or No Connectivity". I've tried resetting my router, restarting my computer, re-entering the code, none of which worked. Oh, my 2G iPod Touch will not connect to the internet anymore also. However, the problem is not with the router. My Wii, DS, Xbox360 and my brothers laptop can all connect to the internet just fine. My router is a Linksys WRT160N Thanks! more

Resolved Question: Can't connect via LAN or Wirelessly and have 169.254 as IP address?

Ok so here's what happened...I restored my Dell to factory settings and everything was fine. I had a d-link air card and atenna installed that didn't work. As I was downloading the drivers, I read it shouldn't be installed while downloading, so I did the stupid thing and pulled it out while the computer was on...I could of sworn I smelled something burning...I redid the system restore to factory settings and can't connect through LAN or wirelessly (the d-link works and picks up my wireless network, I just can't connect) I have the limited or no connectivity message for both LAN and wireless. I've tried SEVERAL fixes and I'm wondering if it's hardware...I downloaded the service pack 3, so i don't need the service pack 2 patch (i tried that anyways), I tried resetting ipconfig and a few other fixes. The Desktop can't find the IP address, I get the 169.254 one. The cable modem and router are fine. I can get online via laptop no problem. Do you think it's hardware? more

Resolved Question: Network Password works on one computer but not the other?

It works on the laptop i'm using right now. It is an eight letter word. No numbers or anything My problem is I just got a computer that my parents did not want anymore. So I brought it home. When I type in the password and hit continue it says it has to be 40 or 104 bits...or five or thirteen characters. How could it have to be that when it works fine for other computers? I tried just typing the first five letters of the password and I thought that seemed to work but then it said it had limited or no connectivity even though i had full signal to the network help more

Resolved Question: Wireless Connection Problems! Limited or no connectivity?

I own a Quest M100 Modem and a NETGEAR WGT624 v3 wireless router. I did a hard reset on my router to resolve some prior issues and set up a new wireless network. After reseting it, it worked for several day flawlessly, then yesterday it started to act up. When I try to connect it says "windows was unable to find a certificate to connect" or something like that. Then I go into Wireless Connection Status> Properties> Wireless Networks> Properties of my networks> Authentication then uncheck the Enable IEEE 802.1x authentication box. After this I try to reconnect to my network and it gives me a limited or no connectivity simbol and I cannot connect.  I am not running service pack 2 and my network is owned by me.  I need step by step instructions because it does not help me when somebody gives me an answer and I don't know what the hell they are talking about.  more

Resolved Question: Wireless router problem: Limited or no connectivity. HELP!?

I have this router: http://homesupport.cisco.com/en-us/wireless/lbc/WRT54G?referrer=www.linksysbycisco.com In the house, we have 7 different things that possibly need to be connected to the internet. I heard that a router can only take 4 connections at a time, so we always try to limit or connections. Resolved Question: a command prompt came up randomly, it quickly opened/closed, now I can't get internet. PLEaSE HELP!1O POINTS!!?

I have an averatec 3700 laptop with windows XP, and I use a Local Area Connection for internet. Earlier I was using paltalk messenger (the internet was working fine then). I had entered a paltalk chat room yesterday and people were in there then, but today the same chat room was listed but it said nobody was in there. Nonetheless I was curious, so I went in the room myself even though no one else was in ther. Shortly after I went in there a command prompt quickly opened and closed on the laptop, as did a help and support window, and I also suddenly got a warning about a virus. After this the computer stopped responding, so I rebooted, and after I rebooted I was no longer able to get the internet. I tried releasing/renewing the ip address and I get a message saying the rpc server is unavailable, a message I have nevr recieved before. What is also interesting is I unplug the ethernet cable, and as soon as I plug it back up it immediately just says "limited or no connectivity" every time. There is never even any attempt to connect to the internet whatsoever. I tried a dial up connection and it seems to connect, but open a page it just blank with nothing on it and nothing happens when I try to do anything. I just want to know based on the details I have given, what could be causing the problems I am having, could it be a virus and if so what can I do about it or how can I possibly fix it, or just at least how could I possibly get the internet back working again. Note that the laptop is the only computer I have (I am currently on a public pc) I bought the laptop used and it didn't come with a restoration disk. Also I have already tried system restore and it did not do anything. PLEaSE help!! 1O points!! more

I called Grandad and he told me how to fix it, but I can't remember anything past "Go into 'Control Panel'."! I can't ask him again because he's gone on holiday, so does anybody on here know how to fix my computer? more

Voting Question: Wireless router help!!!?

Ok, well my dad bought me a computer just a week a go well he got it fixed, its a dell xps 400 with a built in wireless card since my room is all the way in the attic. So before the wifi was pretty good. And it was connected to a verizon wireless router and modem thing which is located in the basement. I have a booster in my room the helps expand the signal and crap. But, this is my main problem, just a couple of days ago when my computer connects it will say in a little bubble "limited or no connectivity" so i press repair and it loads and stuff and then it stops and says it cant renew my ip address, i did this for a good 50 times throughout the past couple of weeks. My mom is experiencing the same problem with her vaio laptop, but when i try and bring it downstairs it will say local connectivity. But the weird thing is that the wifi is perfect on my dad's mac which is connected wirelessly and the mac is like right next to it too..... Please help more

Resolved Question: Local Area Network Connection Problem?

Hey, A few days ago i 'played' a bit around with my Broadband Connection settings and my Local Area Connection settings, because i was trying to get connected to a game called flyff. Well and since then my internet connecting got so slow. I can barely surf the net without waiting 1 minute long just for hotmail.com to come up. I cant even access most of the websites on the net. What do i have to do to fix this problem so that i can surf the net properly again. Also, my Local Area Connection Status says 'Limited or no connectivity... You might not be able to access the Internet or some netword resources. This problems occurred because the network did not assign a network address to the computer.' So that kinda tells me that this happened because i changed the ip addresses on the Broadband settings and the Local Area Settings. Please help!Ok i might try contacting my provider but i think i'll ask my dad to do that. Could it be possible to copy from someone else the correct settings to my broadband router? Because i got a friend who uses the same provider.. Maybe he could give me the correct IP address etc and i could just fill in the settings. Or? .. more

Resolved Question: I'm having issues installing my d'link wireless adapter?

I just reformatted my computer (after installing new mb/cpu), everything is installed (chipsets, video drivers, microsoft updates, etc), except I am having problems with my d'link usb wireless adapter (wua-1340). I downloaded the driver, but each time I get "limited or no connectivity". I have installed/uninstalled 6 times now. The first 4 was with the dled driver, once was windows installation wizard, the final time was with the cd driver. Each time I finish I notice the increasing number after "wireless network connection". I have tried looking up help, but the article I found with a person experiencing the same problem is dated 6 years ago and none of the suggestions have worked (except reformatting, which I have not tried and bc I have just finished doing just that, I would like to avoid it). I am at a loss as to what I should do now. Please help. My level of knowledge is rather basic, so please make any responses for a person of lower technical skill. Thank you. more

Voting Question: Trouble connecting to the internet in a new country?

having moved from NZ to the USA with my laptop, it works fine, got it charging with an adapter for the plug, but connecting to the internet is a problem. I'm staying with family, and their laptop seems to connect without a problem, but when i plug the same cable into my own laptop it tells me it's unable to renew my IP address when I ask it to repair the connection. It has the same problem connecting to the wireless internet I can see is available. When the cable is connected, it gives me 'limited or no connectivity' messages. I'm unsure of how to renew my IP address manually, I've tried run commands, but they seem to close too fast after i've typed in commands for me to even see what it's done. Halp? more

Resolved Question: My laptop won't connect to the internet, HELP!?

When i turn on my laptop and try to connect it to my wireless internet connection, it says that there is limited or no connectivity and when I try to repair it, it says that it can't renew the IP address. Also, my friend's laptop still works on my internet network, so it's probably not the modem. Does anyone know what I can do to fix this problem? more

Voting Question: I have a Linksys wired router that was working fine until I tried a firmware update. Anyone have any info?

Here's what happened. I manually reset the router with the button on the bottom in order to access the home page because I forgot the user name and password. After that I went to update the firmware. The instructions said to back up the router settings, but I didn't have that option with my model for whatever reason. I initiated the firmware update from the router home page and eventually it said that the new settings are successful, and it gave me the option to continue. I clicked the continue button, and the router hasn't worked since. Weird thing was that after that I disabled the wired LAN adapter in the computer, ran a network setup wizard, and my connection was miraculously restored for about 10-15 minutes. I had enough time to look at the version of the firmware in the router home page, and it had gone back to the old one, so apparently the update was unsuccessful. Now no matter what combination of connections I try, I can't get it to work. I've already tried resetting the fricken thing 6 or 7 times, and no luck with that either. The worst part is that when I try to run the setup disc that Linksys provides you, it never gets past step 9 because it can't detect the router. Also when the system is trying to acquire the network address, it always ends up with limited or no connectivity. It's a BEFSR41 version 4.3 Wired if anyone have any info on this problem please let me know. I'd greatly appreciate it. more
