OK so I have this new laptop. This one here, if it helps at all: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Acer-Aspire-11-6-Inch-Netbook-Battery/dp/B002J9GH5M/ I'm having trouble "doing stuff" - everything seems to be slow, from boot-up to starting programs (it likes to stop and wait a while between me clicking something and it doing it), and it takes ages to load internet pages that have any sort of animated graphics on (it will freeze for 10-20 seconds per page - hugely inconvenient). I want to use Skype for webchat with my friends and this is so slow it's just stupid and sometimes crashes altogether. This must be something I can solve, I refuse to believe that a computer bought in July 2010 can be slower than my previous one bought in 2007 even though this new one's only a little laptop. It's not as if I'm asking it to play the latest games at maxed-out settings. I'm only surfing the net. People have suggested downgrading from Vista because my laptop doesn't have the ability to run it fast enough, but when I did a search about how to do this the advice seemed to be "don't". In any case my laptop didn't come with a CD/DVD drive or anything so it's going to be an all-round PITA to do stuff like that. When I clicked on Task Manager it brought up a list of about fifty things that were running. Could this be part of the reason why everything's so slow? I didn't recognise most of the names and I didn't dare start telling it to end things in case it was something vital. I'm not a computer person at all. Can someone tell me please, what things are _supposed_ to be running in the background when your computer is on and you are surfing the net? Then I can maybe try to work out how to get rid of the others and stop them starting up in the future. Would Acer have set loads of things to run automatically? I am sure I haven't asked it to do anything like that since I bought it, and the first thing I did was install an anti-virus thing so it shouldn't have been downloading things from websites without me knowing. Thanks for all the answers so far. I completely understand that if I don't know what something is then I should leave it alone. Thing is, I'm not a computer expert - all the stuff in the list looks like random letters to me, I don't have the first idea what's junk and what's an essential system file. So where do I start? How many things _ought_ to be running away in the background when I a) start up my computer, and b) connect to the net? If it's 50+ then I guess I'm barking up the wrong tree. moreResolved Question: Craigslist Alfa Express Job Scam?

Hi! Okay so my computer had a virus that pretended to be an anti-virus program by saying that I had tonnes of viruses and prompting me to buy and download something to get rid of it. Whenever I used internet explorer or mozilla to access a site it would not let me and on the page it would say that it was unsafe to do unless I bought and downloaded their program. I found out that if I went to my Mozilla browser and selected 'no proxy' in the internet settings that I could browse without being redirected to their fake block website that told me I had to buy their program to be safe and browse. So then I was able to download a program to remove the virus, which worked and I no longer had the virus. The next day or so I was able to browse as per normal without any interruptions just like I was before. However, the next day I used my computer again. Still no sign of the virus but even though I was connected to the internet I could not access anything apart from Mozilla again. When I used Internet Explorer or Google Chrome it would just say could not be displayed and msn messenger wouldn't connect either. So basically I'm connected to the internet, but nothing is actually working apart from Mozilla. I'm not sure if Mozilla being the only program working is related to selecting 'no proxy' on internet settings when I had the virus. Note that the virus is gone, and I was able to use msn and such after this but now I cannot again apart from Mozilla. Does anyone have an idea of what could have happened and how to fix this? Thanks in advance :)Also, when I try to log into msn it says that my proxy server is offline. moreResolved Question: How can I fix my computer to run DeSmemu?
Until yesterday DeSmemu ran just fine on my computer (for more than 6 months, I will add), and now it runs slow. I haven't changed any settings (and I have all of those set to help speed up the game). Once it started running slow I ran defrag, anti virus, and disk cleanup. Nothing changed. When I run the program it uses about 50% of my CPU (don't know what it was before). The program itself usually runs at about 80-90% as per the info at the top. BTW I am using 0.9.4 - the newest version runs even slower. In the past I would always run it with at least firefox open, but now it just runs slow even with no extra programs open. I've even tried using Game Booster to make it run faster but with no luck. Any ideas what I can do? PS - I own both a DS and the game I am playing. The game is just currently not in my possession. moreResolved Question: Are the following specs reasonable for gaming given the price?

Fresh install of the winXP operating system, updated to SP3 added the Free AVG and suddenly performance is like stirring molasses in January. But what about performance hits in these older systems that should be recycled? Free AVG <--I have always used this, and suggested it to users that will never purchase a Anti-Virus Free Avast Free Avira Which anti-viral software provides the lightest footprint, to be used in these recycled older systems. Has anyone seen a review of these anti-viral software packages looking at the performance hits, and would you provide a link. JRMemory in this system is maxed, and this is a new install of the winXP O/S... Tis strange the system degrades so much after adding an anti-viral package. I downloaded CPUz, and the memory reporting is odd, showing DDR2 memory... I removed and cleaned the contacts and now I have good performance... Thanks for the suggestions it turned out to be a hardware problems rather than an anti-viral software problem... more details: My AV and Anti spyware are all up to date and i have no spyware or viruses. I am on a small network (3 computer work stations and one server) I have re-booted my server. After I restart my computer, everything is fine for a couple of hours then it starts dragging again...everything gets real slow. I have 1.5 gig avail memory and 70% of my hard drive is free space. My CPU usage also looks fine. I have run defrag. Any ideas what could be causing my slow down? moreResolved Question: Please Please Seniors Please Help?
I'm having an extremely hard time even getting the words to this question entered into the system, so please forgive me if there is some lack in contuity in what follows. I have always had a hard time with my computer, but for the past 1-2 days it's been ten times worse.l My computer is an Acer AX1200 with 320 GB hard drive and "Bit Defender" anti-virus software that I bought a year ago from Wal-Mart. I am connected to the intervnet via a "dial up" conection, which is all that is available in my area unless one wants to spend about a thousand dollars per year for a "moderately fast" satellelite connection, which I cannot afford. From the start, the performance of the computer was less than I expected. Typically it took about one to two minutes to navigate from page to page. But in the past two days it suddenly takes five to ten minutes to navigate from page to page. My life now depends on the computer in many ways. This is terrifying. I hve asked questions like this in the tech categories and gotten no useful answers. What can I do? Any responses are most welcome. I have posted similar questions in the "tech" categories and have gotten no usesul answers. moreResolved Question: Help With My Computer Video, Please?
Okay, I have a nine-month old Vista box that is great... until recently. The video has become crazy - only showing about one frame per second or so. Audio is fine - it's just video problems. I've noticed that when I minimize windows, the closing window will "stutter" closed, and the same thing happens when I drag a non-maximized window across the screen. I've got Kaspersky anti-virus and nothing is registering. I also use the Search and Destroy Tea-Timer and Ad-Aware to keep my box clean - and they reports no problems at all. HOWEVER, every couple of seconds, the Start Bar (which I have set to auto-hide), flashes into view, like I moused-over it for a micro-second. I use a 24" LCD TV as a monitor (which hasn't had any problems thus far), and I also use a cordless mouse and keyboard set-up. My resolution is set at 1360x768 pixels (32-bit colors) - and my vid card is an NVIDIA GeForce 9100. Any given moment, when I check my system status, it tells me that I have around about 20% CPU usage and about 32% physical memory usage. Can a geek help me out? I can't watch DVD's, nor play CD-based games - and I've noticed that stupid flash-games that are memory intensive have been "hanging" periodically. I haven't received any Facebook messages saying that I am spamming with viruses or anything... so I don't think I've been hijacked... Thanks!! moreResolved Question: BT have rduced my internet speed rediculously what should I do?
I wonder if some one can help me.I know I have asked a similar question before but things have got worse since. I have internet with BT, im on option 3 Unlimited. I would not say im a really heavy user. My husband has a xbox and playstation 3 and downloads 1 demo every other week plus he play online for about 1-2 hours most evenings. On top of this my children watch about 3 cbeebies programmes on the iplayer per day. Apart from that I don't really download any thing. I did download a couple of Tv programs from Itunes last month but this is the first time I have used Itunes. As I have only just got a Ipod. Does this sound excessive internet usage. At the beginning of januray I noticed that my internet had gone painfully slow. I then received a email from BT, saying they recon I have downloaded over 100gb. and that they are now restricting my internet speeds at peak times. . There is no way I have downloaded 100gb.I have a little programme on my computer that monitors and records how much I download So I know I have used no where near this.Could BT have made a mistake. I don't believe any one could download that much in just 1 month. The only other thing I can think of is that maybe some one has hacked in to my wireless network and downloaded stuff. But I don't know who as I live in a terrace hose and the cottages either side out holiday cottages and there are different people there every week. or how they could do this as my net. work is secure. My network is secure. and I have a built in fire wall in the BT home hub plus my computer has anti virus and fire wall installed. I contacted BT to complain and they were not very help full. I have managed to put up with the restriction until now as it was only in the evenings and I mainly download at night or early in the morning. But now its got ridiculous as they seem to have restricted my internet even more and all the time not just at peak times. My internet speed all the time at the moment it 98kb Which is ridiculous. What can I do. My internet is ridiculous it is so slow it is a struggle to even just surf the internet. Let alone do any thing else. My husband can't play online. I am using a friends computer to type this question. Can they restrict your internet usage this much. to the point where your internet is more or less useless. Can I complain again to Bt and If I do will they do any thing. What would you do. I want to cancel and move to another provider but BT have told me ill have to pay to the end of my contract plus cancellation fee which seems ridiculous and unfair to me. Any advice would be much appreciated Thanks In advanceI don not have teen children my sons are age 6 & 3 1/2. and both have specail needs. So don't really think they could be using the internet behind my back. Also we only ever have one console switched on and contected to the internet at a time. The PS3 is only switched on and used about once a week. Also one other thing I have done a speed test using Bt's own speed test and I get a speed of 8mbs. and when I log in to my home hub it says the same. But when I use the Think broadband speed test and other available speed testers I get a speed of 98kbs. Why such a difference. I know my internest speed is not 8mb moreResolved Question: How do I stop Norton from modifying the Windows hosts file?
I do web server development and testing on my Windows 7 PC. However, Norton keeps removing my entries in the hosts file thinking they are hacking attempts. Last night, I was downloading something and it contained a Trojan, per Windows Defender 2010, but I couldn't remove it because it blocked all my anti-virus programs (Avira, Ad-Aware Pro, Windows Defender, Spyware Doctor). According to Windows Defender, the Trojan was a "Screen.grab.j.exe.". I got too tired to continue try to rid it so i shut down my computer. Today, when I turned my computer on, it wouldn't load my main desktop screen (all it showed was a black screen). I restarted the computer in safe mode and had the same results. I decided to do a system restore and everything is back to normal but, i'm not convince that a Trojan would just disappear from something such a simple task. Is there any FREE Trojan/Spyware removers i could use? Do I need an additional Firewall for my personal computer since it comes with Windows firewall? Do I also need an anti-spyware program? I am currently running Windows XP with Spybot S&D and McAfee Security Center. My McAfee subscription is up for renewal so I have to decide whether to renew it or not. I have been having trouble with my firewall(s) lately which seem to be blocking my access to my ISP (even tho the ISP is on the Trusted list). This is all very frustrating, not to mention expensive. Not to mention that McAfee is constantly downloading new virus defs (or other updates) and this means that on my 56k dial-up line, it is virtually unusable for the first 30-60 minutes per day that I'm connected to the Internet because all the bandwidth is taken up by McAfee updating itself and nothing else works until it is done. So... what protection do I need, that will protect my computer sufficiently? I do a lot of my banking and bill payments on-line, etc., so it does need to be secure, and I also work from home some days and in order to do this my employer requires me to have up-to-date anti-virus software. I'm trying to figure out whether I can drop the McAfee and just have Windows firewall and Spybot S&D. Anybody know? moreResolved Question: Computer keeps Looping?
I posted the wrong question b4, I was asking what to do about my system when BSoD pops up. I don't get the screen. It just loops. I keep doing the same thing over and over again. I delete the partition and create a new one. I'm doing everything my family and cousin have told me to do. I've even disabled auto start on it too and it still loops. I don't have anything later than windows xp. i got the computer from a cousin who set it up for me with windows 7. it crashed as soon as i got my wireless internet hooked up. my brother put Vista on it for me and it still didn't work. it went back to looping. So we tried XP instead. it started working. It works if i don't don't reboot or shut down the computer. I got an anti-virus thinking it would help and as i was getting that installed, following the prompts when it asked me to reboot, it started looping again. I repartitioned, again, started doing all my drivers, connecting to the internet and getting updates then running the virus scan. while i was installing the anti virus my icons went missing and i started having unknown scans popping up and running. i'm starting to think that maybe my hard drive has gone down the poo-per. All I know is my computer is old, 2001, with in intel pentium 3. i can't even run in safe mode, safe network, run normal windows, run from last long in, etc. it keeps rebooting and looping. i'm running out of options. and i don't have a job nor the money to start socking money i don't have into this crapper of a computer. moreResolved Question: Updates are driving me nuts !!!!!!! No, seriously. I mean, you have some editions on torrents that are completely untouched and give you a genuine sign and you can download all from Microsoft and everything. I just don't get it why someone would spend 319$ for a full version of the Windows. Same with anti-viruses, I mean Norton 360 is 80$ per year. Yeah sure that's small but still if you can get it for free, why bother? I'd like to hear your opinion on this? Thanks moreResolved Question: Question About Windows Task Manager?
I have a 2005 Dell computer which I connect to the internet with a 56k dial up phone line. I have McAfee Security Center with personal firewall, anti-virus protection, etc. McAfee automatically updates all virus and spam definitions every time I sign onto the internet (or maybe just once per day, I forget - but it seems like it is constantly downloading and installing new virus defs). I also run a complete scan of all files once/week. The scan runs clean (i.e., no malware found). So here's the question: Every time I sign onto the Internet when I look at the inbound and outbound traffic on Task Manager, it seems like there is always more outbound traffic than there should be. Even when I am doing nothing that would send traffic outbound, [something] seems to be sending blocks of info outbound. How can I find out what program or application is sending this outbound traffic, and how can I see what it is sending? Thx. moreResolved Question: Live Messenger is really laggy?
I've lately had major problems with Live Messenger lagging. Whenever a message is being typed it freezes for 10 secs and it does that couple of times per minute and god, that's really annoying waiting for it to disappear before i can start typing again :( It wasn't like this before. I was copying some data from one portable hard-drive to another, and it has been doing that ever since. I scanned my PC with anti-virus and -spyware, cleaned the registry, did the Disk Cleanup, deleted cookies, but still nothing. If it helps, I'm running 64-bit Windows 7 on Dell Studio 15, with 4 gigs of Ram and 2.0 GHz Dual Core Duo Processor. But as I said, it didn't use to do that before, so I don't think my specs have anything to do with it. Any help is greatly appreciated :) moreResolved Question: Internet problems...freezing and a big "slow down"?
We have two computers. They run off one modem which is high speed coax connection (one from a linksys wireless router). Connection speed (as per connection speed tests) is not the problem. We are experiencing web page "glazing" ( page freezes up and dims), and if multiple pages are open, one will freeze...and if we try to close it...all pages will close. We are also experiencing a speed problem. We have always maintained our computers. We run AVG anti-virus, keep cookies and temp files deleted, defragment, etc. What in the world could be causing this? Don't understand why this would happen on two different computers. Any suggestions? One computer is a few years old, but has upgrades. The other is new and is a beast. moreResolved Question: is there such computer aplication?

My HP tablet computer is locking up on me continually now (about 1-2 times per day) when I am studying/checking email on it. I don't think it is overheating, because this sometimes occurs when I just start it up, but it always has this characteristic: the screen image shifts to a skewed image of whatever I am viewing at the time, and it stops functioning. You are hereby advise to open the file attached to this email and read thoroughly. Hennry Ralston. It also enclosed this document Dear Beneficiary, It is obvious that you have not received your fund which is to the tune of $6.8million due to past corrupt Governmental Officials who almost held the fund to themselves for their selfish reason and some individuals who have taken advantage of your fund all in an attempt to swindle your fund which has led to so many losses from your end and unnecessary delay in the receipt of your fund. The National Central Bureau of Interpol enhanced by the United Nations and Federal Bureau of Investigation have successfully passed a mandate to the current president of Nigeria his Excellency President Umaru Yar'Adua to boost the exercise of clearing all foreign debts owed to you and other individuals and organizations who have been found not to have receive their Contract Sum, Lottery/Gambling, Inheritance and the likes. Hello, are teacher had assigned us to create an RPG game for homework. In it we need to create two loops. For this homework, you will be writing two loops in a RPG game fighting system. I feel that this will give students a good look into how a RPG game works, and it will be a good learning opportunity for them. First off download the starter code from logicfusion website. All the real code has been made for you, All you need to do is write two loops 1) while loop to indicate when either the player or the monster has died in battle 2) for loop to allow the battle to continue for at least 3 rounds. Variables: MonsterHitPoints = the life of the monster MonsterStrength = strength of monster hitPoints = life of the Hero strength = strength of hero You can use these variables to refresh the monster and hero status per battle if you like to work more. Please use hitPoints and MonsterHitPoints for the while loop to determine if the hero or Monster has died I've created the loops but am facing two problems. PROBLEM 1#= BOTH THE HITPOINTS OF THE HERO AND MONSTER KEEP GOING INTO THE NEGETIVES. PROBLEM 2#= THE GAME IS SUPOSSED TO HAVE THREE ROUNDS BUT I DON'T KNOW HOW. THANKS. #include <iostream> #include <string> using namespace std; int main() { //Monster variables // string MonsterName = "Virus"; int MonsterHitPoints = 20; int MonsterStrength = 5; //Hero Variables //1 string HeroName = "Kaspersky Anti-Virus"; int hitPoints = 30; int strength = 5; // Menu Variable // string menu = "What are you going to do " + HeroName + "\n 1 - attack \n 2 - defend \n 3 - run away "; //action variable // int action; cout << "Prepare for battle!!"<< endl;; MonsterHitPoints = 20; cout << menu << endl; cin >> action; if (action == 1){ MonsterHitPoints = MonsterHitPoints - strength; cout <<"You attacked the " << MonsterName << endl; cout <<"Monster life is now at " << MonsterHitPoints << endl; } else if (action == 2){ hitPoints = hitPoints - MonsterStrength; cout <<"You defended, " << MonsterName << " has attacked you!" <<endl; cout <<"Your life is now at " << hitPoints << endl; } else if (action == 3){ cout <<"You cant run!" << endl; } //********************************************************************************************************************** while (MonsterHitPoints, hitPoints > 0){ cin >> action; if (action == 1){ MonsterHitPoints = MonsterHitPoints - strength; cout <<"You attacked the " << MonsterName << endl; cout <<"Monster life is now at " << MonsterHitPoints << endl; } else if (action == 2){ hitPoints = hitPoints - MonsterStrength; cout <<"You defended, " << MonsterName << " has attacked you!" <<endl; cout <<"Your life is now at " << hitPoints << endl; } else if (action == 3){ cout <<"You cant run!" << endl; } } cout <<"Oh no the Monster has bought friends" << endl; for(hitPoints=0,MonsterHitPoints=0; hitPoints,MonsterHitPoints==0;hitPoints--,MonsterHitPoints--){ int hitpoints =30; int MonsterHitPoints =20; cin >> action; if (action == 1){ MonsterHitPoints = MonsterHitPoints - strength; cout <<"You attacked the " << MonsterName << endl; cout <<"Monster life is now at " << MonsterHitPoints << endl; } else if (action == 2){ hitPoints = hitPoints - MonsterStrength; cout <<"You defended, " << MonsterName << " has attacked you!" <<endl; cout <<"Your life is now at " << hitPoints << endl; } else if (action == 3){ cout <<"You cant run!" << endl; hitPoints--,MonsterHitPoints--; } } int stop; cin >> stop; } moreResolved Question: My computer went slow after a virus.?
