Open Question: My email has been hacked. Is this the result of a virus or a worm? Please Help!?

This morning I awoke to texts from 3 friends telling me that I had emailed them with a strange link for some kind of ad around 3 a.m. Obviously, I was confused because I was sleeping at this time. I checked my email this morning, but there were no messages in my sent box. Sure enough, more and more people from my contact list have told me they received this email. It scares me to think that my address is sending out emails, but not storing them in the sent box. I immediately changed my password to my email and ran Spybot, where it detected 4 kinds of Spyware/Malware: DoubleClick, FastClick, MediaClick and Right Media. I removed all 4 from my computer. Do you think it is due to this Spyware that my email was compromised? This has never happened before, and luckily I won't have to deal with it again. more

Open Question: Search engine redirect problem?

Ok I posted a while ago this same question: http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;… After using malware-bytes, TDSSkiller, and following the instructions on multiple different websites using multiple different anti-malware/spyware tools I still cannot get rid of this search engine redirect problem. I ran TDSSkiller, it took out one file, and then told me to restart. I figured, "cool, my problem is fixed", only to find that the problem was still there even after TDSSkiller ran. I tried running through Malware-bytes once again, along with AVG, and spybot, all of which only removed cookies. Search engine redirect is still there. In addition to this problem, i am unable to boot into safe mode for unknown reasons. Every time i try to boot into safe mode, my computer automatically shuts down after i choose to boot into ANY of the safe modes. For some background information, I used to have an nvidia 8800 GT OC installed via PCI-express slot, but the slot broke. I removed the video card because the slot no longer worked, and my PC started working after i removed the video card from the broken slot. Could the broken PCI-express slot be the reason my computer is broken now? It doesn't seem like it would cause this type of problem. In addition to this information, any link i click on google goes through a few phases. When i first click on the link, the loading bars says something about searching, then it says redirecting, and then it goes to a random website that has nothing to do with what i clicked on. Ok in addition to that, I can't get on youtube because it is now an unsafe connection. However, instead of saying i am trying to connect to youtube, it says that i am trying to unsafely connect to www.google.com? more

Resolved Question: I can't uninstall programs I downloaded when using Vista?

Whenever I install a program I think I want and then change my mind . I'll go look in my computer add/remove programs and it is not there. I will go to the program itself and it acts all sneaky and won't allow me to delete it or uninstall or even move it from one side of my desktop to the next. I can't even click the icon. And No I don't need a program that removes spyware. I need something that removes programs that HIDE from add/remove programs in Vista. Someting that won't say I found 100 problems but will only fix 2 unless you give money or sign up. I want it to be 100% free something that wont expire in 30 days on me easy to use something that works with extremely sneaky programs. Now I have to uninstall the so called "uninstallers" - they don't want to leave now either. Add/Remove Programs sucks as it DOES NOT LIST what you just downloaded. Please help. more

Open Question: I need to know how to remove Vista Internet Security 2010?

I seem to have picked it up somewhere or other on the web. I know that this is false security malware, but I am having more difficulty removing it than in past cases. I have the free version of spyware doctor that removes spyware that I got with google pack, as well as the basic security programs and norton, but none of them seem to be identifying the malware, let alone removing it. It would be best if I could remove it for free from my home (which does not have access to another computer) Thanks in advance. The malware hasn't really done anything yet besides pester me with annoying pop-ups, but I would prefer to have it removed, before something else gets screwed up.Also, if it helps, I have windows vista on a dell inspirion 1525. Whatever program used must be compatible. more

Open Question: AntiVirus 7 problems???READ DETAILS?

Ok, so this phony spyware program called Antivirus 7 found its way to my computer on March 9, 2010. I knew it was fake right away and tried to do a lot of things. Every once in a while, it blocked a website by saying something like "This site may cause infections". So I actually went into my OS files and found the file for this called "AV7" I went into the file and put the file along with the folder and shortcut to the recycling bin. I then emptied the recycling bin with them in it. I thought I was good for a little bit until the websites kept on getting blocked! Someone please help me! I am desperate and if I can't do something about it, my computer might crash. Please give me some tips or how to remove it. DONT GIVE ME ANY DOWNLOAD LINKS THOUGH BECAUSE EVERYTIME I TRY DOWNLOADING SOMETHING, IT SAYS THE FILE IS CORRUPT. more

Open Question: time warner sent a complaint I'm scared?

Im freaking scared im going to go to jail? Omg or get a fine? How can i resolve it i deleted everything from my pc like limewire and torrents. Time-Warner cable recently sent me this notice after I used bittorent: "Dear Subscriber: This notice is being sent to you by Road Runner Customer Care because we have received a complaint that your computer has been used to distribute copyrighted material without authorization through a peer-to-peer program. We received this complaint from the movie studio, record company, television studio or other company that owns the copyrighted material. The purpose of this email is to remind you that the distribution of copyrighted material in this fashion may violate both the copyright laws and Road Runner’s terms of service, and to tell you a bit about peer-to-peer programs, the dangers they can pose to your computer and our network, and the steps you can take to protect yourself. A computer can become accessible to a peer-to-peer network for an unlimited period of time after a peer-to-peer program is downloaded. You may not even be aware that such a program is on your computer; a child or a visitor to the home could have downloaded it. That is why we want to alert you to this issue. Peer-to-peer programs may contain many problems. For example: •Downloading and offering for upload copyrighted material without authorization is unlawful. If you or others using your computer have been doing this, you could be subject to civil penalties and criminal fines. Such activity also violates the Road Runner terms of service. •The programs allow any anonymous person on the Internet to look at your computer files and copy them for themselves. Such a hacker could view all of your files, which can lead to identity theft. •The programs, which use large amounts of memory, can interfere with the functioning of your computer by destabilizing your operating system, leading to a general sluggishness at bootup and during operation. •The programs can contain spyware, adware, malware, viruses and pornography. If you are interested in a discussion of problems associated with peer-to-peer file sharing, please follow this link: http://research.pestpatrol.com/whitepape...mpact.asp. If you use the Windows OS, the best way to remove peer-to-peer programs is through the Add/Remove Programs tool. Other removal options are discussed at http://security.uchicago.edu/peer-to-pee...are.shtml. Thank you for subscribing to Road Runner. Very truly yours, Road Runner Customer Care" more

Open Question: My computer loses working memory over time?

I have a new Dell XPS desktop (8 gig of RAM) that is driving me crazy. If you leave it running, over the space of 5-6 hours available physical memory will drop to near zero, error messages stating that the computer is low on memory and needs to shut down programs will pop up, and Aero will be disabled. Restarting the computer returns it to normal or near normal performance, but the problem will pop up again. I've run Malware Bytes, AVG Free, Ad Aware, and Spy Bot, found and removed some viruses and spyware, but the problem is still occurring. I've read some stuff about memory leaks but have found no good answers on how to isolate the software causing it. Any ideas on what I should do?I think I solved it. wmpnetwk.exe, Media Player 12's networking service seemed to be going crazy. Turned of media sharing and things have seemed to settle down more

Open Question: How do you delete Antivirus Vista 2010?

I don't know how I got it on my computer but it just showed up. I tried going to the control panel to remove it but it wouldn't delete. When i open windows internet explorer a pop up appears and says the following " Antivirus Vista 2010 has blocked a program from accessing the internet." Options are yes activate antivirus vista 2010 or no, continue unprotected. So i click no internet is fine until i click on something like for example yahoo answers. the page then says internet explorer alert visiting this site may pose a security threat to your system. It lists the things you can do: Get a copy of Antivirus vista 2010 to safeguard your PC, run a spyware, virus and malware scan or continue surfing without any security measures. It wouldn't let me do anything else except go the page to purchase copy of antivirus vista. I previously had norton but deleted it. more

Open Question: Windows Vista Computer Issues after removing Vista Internet Security 2010?

Resolved Question: Is there a way to scan and remove spyware on my computer without installing a program?

Ok so I'm at work and somehow someone managed to get a serious spyware program on this laptop. Now it would be easy to get rid of if I didn't need to sign onto an administrative user to install any program. So is there a way to scan and remove spyware on this computer without installing any programs? Thank you :)I dont know how they got the spyware on here. All I know is its called "xp internet security"Thank you gary and takataone. I clicked the X and it went to my home page, I typed in yahoo.com and the internet went off and a vista anti-spyware 2010 updater said click here to update your computer is at risk. Voting Question: My computer keeps logging off at start up.?

At first, I had a virus (the fake anti spyware virus that automatically downloads itself into your computer). I tried to remove that using Malware Bytes. I had successfully removed the virus, but did not manage to fix my other problem that came along with it: I couldn't open my .exe files without having to choose a program to open it with (in some cases, I couldn't even open it at all). Resorting to google, I tried this, in hopes that it would fix my issue: "1. Run Task Manager (Ctrl-Alt-Del or right click on Taskbar) 2. Stop wscript.exe process if available by highlighting the process name and clicking End Process. 3. Then terminate explorer.exe process. 4. In Task Manager, click on File -> New Task (Run…). 5. Type “cmd” (without quotes) into the Open text box and click OK. 6. Type the following command one by one followed by hitting Enter key: del c:\autorun.* /f /s /q /a del d:\autorun.* /f /s /q /a del e:\autorun.* /f /s /q /a c, d, e each represents drive letters on Windows system. If there are more drives or partitions available, continue to command by altering to other drive letter. Note that you must also clean the autorun files from USB flash drive or portable hard disk as the external drive may also be infected. 7. In Task Manager, click on File -> New Task (Run…). 8. Type “regedit” (without quotes) into the Open text box and click OK. 9. Navigate to the following registry key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon 10. Check if the value name and value data for the key is correct (the value data of userint.exe include the path which may be different than C drive, which is also valid, note also the comma which is also needed): “Userinit”=”C:\WINDOWS\system32\userinit.exe,” If the value is incorrent, modify it to the valid value data " After doing the " del c:\autorun.* /f /s /q /a " it deleted a few things in the registry. Being unsure of whether or not I had fixed my problem, I turned off my computer and restarted it. Now, my issue is that when my computer turns on, it just automatically turns off. Is there any other way to fix this, or do I have to reformat my computer.. once again? If I have to resort to reformatting, is there any possible ways to somehow save my programs and transfer it to a different hard drive or something? Thanks.I've tried starting it up as you said in: - Safe Mode - Last Known Good Configuration (your most recent settings that worked) Both didn't work for me, however the "last known good configuration" got me as far up to my wallpaper (and nothing else) before the hourglass popped up and kicked me out. Is there anything else to do, or am I just doing this wrong? more

Voting Question: Is this a virus? What is this?

I was surfing the web last night and after a new page loaded Windows XP Antispyware popped up saying things like "Privacy Threat", "System Hijack", "Stealth Intrusion", then it was followed by further messages that said there was a possible spyware, trojan, or some other malicious infection on my computer. I ran Norton Antivirus. Nothing. So I used the Norton Removal tool, took off Norton System Works/Antivirus and ran Microsoft Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool. Nothing. I upgraded Norton to Norton 360 and ran that. Nothing. But the XP Antispyware scan says there are 25 infections and I can't access the internet. XP Antispyware keeps popping up every 2 seconds with new warnings. But the thing is, I don't have a subscription to Antispyware so I can't run a full scan and remove the infections that it claims my laptop has. Any idea what's going on and how to fix it? more

Voting Question: How can I get rid of this adware and spyware?

For the past couple of months, I have been having problems nearly every day with spyware and adware. First the spyware: Nearly every day, Vista Antispyware 2010 will install itself and I have to run a simple .exe program called "Remove Fake Antivirus" that does a scan and remove it. However, in about a day the program will return, install itself, and I have to remove it. I've been running programs like Malwarebyte's anti-malware and Norton Antivirus to remove the trojans, but the program keeps coming back. How do I stop this? Second the adware: I don't know if these two are connected, but I constantly am getting Internet Explorer popups despite that fact that I never use Internet Explorer and use Firefox instead. (If it's related, the Virus Antivirus changes my default internet program to IE). I use a anti pop-up software, but the popups will still popup for one second until they go away and I know it must be adware. How do I remove this. (I even have an anti-adware program and it still pops up).@mono12 I'm not going to throw the baby out with the bathwater. (No linux). more

Resolved Question: Computer virus did something to my programs or computer!!?

I recently got a virus, Vista Guardian, and tried to remove it by downloading various anti-spyware, such as SUPERAntiProfessionalSpyware and AntiSpyware-Bot. I also downloaded RegistryBooster. After running these programs, I restarted my computer to complete the spyware removal. After the reboot, I logged in to see that the virus was gone, but I was unable to open any exe programs. For example, when i would click AIM, it would take me to an "Open With a selected program file". I would be able to select aim and open it, but it wouldn't let me open it continously with the same program file. more

Resolved Question: Urgent help needed, fake virus popups!!?

The other day, i got a popup saying "Warning!!! Your computer shows various signs of viruses and malware presence..." It is something like antivirus 2009. Ok, so i was on facebook on tuesday, all of the sudden my computer goes nuts, goes to some weird page, and the pop-up appears. I clicked cancel, but it took me to a very real looking "my computer" virus scan. I was on internet explorer. It said i had 322 malwares and such. So i scanned my computer many times with mbam, microsoft security essentials, and super anti spyware in normal and safe mode, but it never turned up anything except for "adware.tracking cookies". The thing i am concerned about is that microsoft security essentials recovered and removed "exploit:win32/pdfjsc.DR", about 3 or 4 weeks ago. Most other posts say their popups have continued, but after logging onto firefox and aol, in the last 3 days i haven't seen it again. does this mean it is gone? more

Resolved Question: Is it safe to manually delete spyware files if you know where they are?

I've been able to delete the more dangerous threats by means I'll not specify but I know there are still a lot more little threats on my computer. I used Spyware Doctor to detect them but its only trial so I can't remove them. There was about 350 threats, about 10-15 medium-high risk threats and the rest low risk. The program is no longer on my computer at the moment but i remember recalling that it actually shows you specifically where the risks are located. I'll check again later once I've got it back on my computer, but if i am able to follow the address to the specific file is it safe to delete it? Spyware tries to disguise itself, but if i know the exact location plus if i check its creation date/modification date i should be able to distinguish them apart. I'm on a really tight budget so if i can save 40$ that'd be nice, but if the risk is too high i guess i'll just back up and reformat. more
