Resolved Question: How much could I sell my Alto Sax for online?

I've been thinking of sellin my horn since I don't play that much after high school anymore. My horn is a Yamaha Custom Z Silver plated Alto Saxophone, it's about four years old but still in very condition with little or no scratches on it. on Ebay, i've seen used horns of similar brand but different plating, go for around 1,500. I also have a couple of mouthpieces to sell along with it, a selmer C*, a vandoren v16 small rubber, a meijer 5, and the box horn. along with two ligatures. Ive been thinking of selling it for a minumum of 1700 in which i'll pay for shipping. ive seen wwbw (woodwind and brasswind.com) sell similar brands for over 3000. can i expect two grand or at least 1700 with everything? Resolved Question: Will a scratched mouthpiece affect the sound of a tenor sax?

My tenor sax mouthpiece has a few scratches on the side after my mother took it upon herself to bend the ligature back into place and force it onto the mouthpiece. Will this affect the sound of the instrument and the quality of the sound the mouthpiece will produce? more

Resolved Question: Help! What is the sound difference on an inverted ligature for eb alto sax? or any instrument?

I couldnt get an answer in classical so here i am well my alto is being repaired and i wont get it back for a while (T_T) so I cant answer this question myself Well I have a Rovner Dark ligature for alto. I love the sound I get. It plays fairly well classical and easyyy jazz. What would be the difference (sound-wise or other) if I inverted it? P.S. if you're gonna use the terms 'light' or 'dark' or 'brighter' or 'deeper' please elaborate =]. And i cant watch youtube vids on my comp atm so dont bother. THANKS!guess i should clarify. by inverted - i mean: instead of the screw pointing to the right (away from you) when you put it on, it faces to the left (unaturally - so the smaller half goes on first and the wider half goes on last)>< i am looking at the brochure, thats where i got the idea from in the first place this is what it says- the normal position gives a more open, brighter response. (cocked forward) the inverted gives a darker more covered sound (cocked backward) im kinda asking if anyone has tried this before and agrees with what the Rovner company saysok they censored that word but it wasnt meant to be dirty.. its actually whats written in. dekcoc backwards more

Resolved Question: Is this the right saxophone screw?

I recently broke my horn's neck screw, some call it the neck receiver screw where you tighten so the neck could fit in or take out fine. I'm not sure if this is that screw http://www.wwbw.com/Allied-Music-Supply-Alto-Sax-Ligature-Screws-473705-i1439373.wwbw more

Resolved Question: For alto sax players: desperate need of reed tone quality?

hi, im in desperate need of help. i dont know when it started but this has been happening for like the past month. no matter what i do, i am ALWAYS sharp/ flat and it WILL NOT go away no matter how much i push in/ pull out. im getting very frusterated with this and very discouraged to play now.. i play on 3 1/2 vandoren reeds and the one i have is about 1-2 weeks old and i CAN NOT no matter how hard i try, get in tune! i literally cant recall the last time i actually was in tune and that alone makes me feel embarrased to play.. please i am in desperate need of advice and UIL is in a couple months.. thanks oh, and another question, before i play, i moisten my reed for a while and then put it on my mouth piece. i try to keep a very small gap between the reed and the mouthpiece and when i tighten my ligature, i tighten it all the way and then undo it a tiny bit so it has enough room to vibrate (i play on the leather types of ligatures not the metal) and before class, my band director likes to talk about 5-10 minutes and then we begin to warm up, but right when we warm up, my tone just goes out the window.. when i play, its like im playing on a very dry and hard reed so i get this tone that sounds like im trying very abnormally hard to play a note but nothing seems to come out no matter how hard i try and i dont understand how this is happening.. any ideas why? oh and as additional info, i think i have an air leak in the middle/ lower octave D. thanks :) more

Resolved Question: Squeaking on alto sax?

I've been playing alto for 4 years now, and my setup is as follows: King 665 Alto Sax Rovner Dark Ligature Vandoren Java 2 Reeds Vandoren V16 Mpc. I'm squeaking, and it sounds like a shoe scuffing on a gym floor. Can anybody help me? more

Resolved Question: What is this Saxophone piece for?

I'm a non musician, but a tenor sax caught my eye at the swap meet, so we went home together. It seems to be a Conn model M10 made in 1935, and I can even honk out a windy rendition of Mary's Lamb on it. Yeah! But on to my question. In the case, along with the sax body, the neck, mouthpiece, mouthpiece cover and ligature, there's a mysterious piece. A brass tube 1" in diameter and 1 3/4" in length. It clearly fits into the body of the horn just as the neck does. But then what? But what is this piece for? How would I use it? I would appreciate the benifit of your expertise. Thanks! To describe this mystery piece in a bit more detail: It fits perfectly into the top of the body (where the neck would fit). And based on the finish and wear marks, there's not a doubt in my mind that that's where it goes. It occured to me that it might be to lengthen the horn by 3/4" to change the tuning, but the neck doesn't fit into the top end of this mystery tube. It's just a mm or so too small for that. And it doesn't have any kind of clamp to tighten down as the body clamps down on the neck. At least I gather it's not a piece everyone has and uses, so maybe I can ignore it. But I would still like to know. To satisfy my curiousity. Thanks again!Tomodama is the Man! That's exactly what it is. I never would have guessed a piece like that was needed. I'll bet in the early days of the saxophone, someone learned the hard way! Thanks - and "best answer" to you. more

Resolved Question: Alto Saxophone Meyers Jazz Mouthpieces?

I need to purchase a jazz mouthpiece for jazz band and i currently play on a C* with a Rovner ligature. My teacher said to get a Meyer 5 mouthpiece but as i was looking them up, there are many kinds... such as Meyer Rubber 5M Alto Saxophone Mouthpiece, Meyer Ritchie Cole 5M Alto Sax Mouthpiece and the Meyer G Style 5M Alto Sax Mouthpiece. I know that it is based on the player's preference, but could you please briefly describe the qualities, similarities, and diifferences between these? Thanks you :) more

Resolved Question: Alto Saxophone Keg value?

In my garage, the man that lived here before us fled the house and left it to us for very little. Upon his leaving, he left some of his belongings behind. One of these being an alto saxophone keg. It seems as though the sax was fully functional before, and made into a keg. It has all of its keys, a mouth beys, and a ligature. This is all the info we could with-drawl from it: Traffic Dept. B.S.E. Marketing, 116 Gazz Boulevard, Farmingdale, NY, 11735, (516)-694-0300 If you could help me find out its worth and where its from, that would be great. Thanks, ~Logan more

Resolved Question: How to become really good at the Tenor sax?

Well, over the last 5 years I have progressed with my skill. I have unfortunately reach a very awkward point in my music career, its the change from intermediate to advance. I found out that I had to quit concert band because I became to jazzy of a tenor. So I had switched my mouth piece to cannon ball, switched my ligature to dark, and I play a 3 rico royal, on the hot spur tenor sax cannonball model. Pretty nice, only problem is gosh do I suck now. I can only play high notes and its so extremely "jazzy" I'm not even close to playing in tune on those notes either, from high C and up it's completely sharp and my low notes come out with this awful 'honk' of a sound. Please suggest anything. Please. I have my distract and region concert coming up and I am incredibly embarrassed to play. Yes at one point I was a beautiful concert tenor, not anymore, is this normalI already have private lessons more

Resolved Question: Need input on saxophone brands.?

What are some top name brands for Soprano Saxophones? I have a chance to get a Jean-Baptiste Soprano Sax, but don't know if I want to spring for it. I know Selmer, Yanagisawa, and Yamaha, are generally good sax brands, but I see only Jean-baptiste, LA Sax, and Jupiter in my neck of the woods. Also, I started taking sax lessons a while back and my teacher was really a proponent of using only "Professional" equipment, while I remember sitting in a clinic one time where the clinician said you should be able to make any piece of equipment work for you. Any comments on those two statements? Specifically regarding mouthpieces, ligatures, and reeds. There's a huge price gap between Professional, intermediate, and beginning equipment. more

Resolved Question: Alto saxophone material/tones?

I just wanted to know what mainly affects the tone and sound when playing the alto sax other than your embachure. Does the actual saxophone , such as whether it is a student or intermediate/pro sax affect the sound more (like a YAS-200AD vs. Yanagasiwa A901) or does the mouthpiece affect the sound more (regular plastic yamaha mouthpiece that comes with the sax vs. ebonite mouthpiece) or does the ligature affect it a lot (regular ligature that comes with the sax vs. rovner dark ligature) Thanks more

Resolved Question: My alto sax suddenly started to squeak, and I can't play low D or high F-F# anymore.?

Okay so today, Saturday, I took out my sax to practice. All went well until I cleaned the pads. My old band director told me to slide a dollar bill under the pad then slowly pull it out. After I did this, I started squeaking when trying to play low, and when I play higher than an F the air feels restricted. I can't play anything lower than F and higher than octave key F. I've been playing for 4 years, using a selmer brand alto sax. just bought a new ligature, had it for a week now, and everything was fine more

Resolved Question: Can I use an alto sax ligature screw as a screw for my lyre?

I just rented my sax from school and didn't notice that there was a crew missing from the neck (i.e. the place where my marching lyre goes) My ligature for my mouthpiece has two screws...and I took one out and screwed it into the neck and it works fine. Can I use this as an alternative screw for my lyre? I sound fine when I play with one screw on the ligature. more

Resolved Question: Alto sax ligatures/ mouthpiece?

My classmates who play alto sax with me have a nice professional sound unlike mine. They say it's because of the rubber ligature because all of them have it except for me examples are rovner, and others. If i get a ligature like that will it help me? Also do i need to get a rubber mouthpiece because they said it is good. also what do they do tksto dojotz i have played alto sax for about 3 and a half years now. i am currently using a yamaha 4c mouthpiece which is plastic. So no i am not using rubber right now. as forthe ligature im not sure what it is. it is gold colored but i know it is not a good one because most good ones like rovner usually only have 1 screw while this one has 2 more

Resolved Question: Saxophone Question about Ligatures?

I have been playing Alto Sax in a concert band for a little over 2 years, and I recently encountered some issues with my metal ligature, the kind with 2 screws. It won´t stay on, and it keeps sliding and scratching up my mouthpiece. I have been practising with a rubber band as a ligature and it seems to make the same sound. I was wondering about using a rubber band, I heard some people use two pieces of velcro, so I assumed it doesn´t necessarily make a difference when I´m still a beginner. I can buy another metal Lig, but was wondering If I can just use the rubber band anyway.  more

Resolved Question: How do I conclude this report on an Alto Saxophone?

Okay, I know I put this in hair, but I know this is the most commonly veiwed questions/answers. I wrote this report, how do I finish it? The Alto Saxophone is a woodwind instrument created by Adolphe Sax in 1841. Aldophe was a flute-player and clarinetist working in Paris in his father’s instrument shop. He began developing this instrument with a priority to be similar to the clarinet, but would rise a pitch by a twelfth when overblown. He also wanted it to have a projection of a brass instrument with the mobility of a woodwind. The Alto Saxophone has roughly 21-23 keys. Given that, the written note range for an Alto is a Bb to an F. The note range can be extended with a proper use of overtones. All saxophones use the same key arrangement and fingering to produce a given pitch, therefore it is not hard for a player to switch among the various sizes when the music has been suitably switched. The proper way to put together a saxophone is to wet the reed in your mouth, attach it to the mouthpiece with a ligature, and attach the whole mouthpiece to the neck. Then you attach the neck to the body of the instrument. To prevent dropping the alto saxophone, you should always use a neck strap. When you are done playing, take apart the mouthpiece and put the reed in it’s case, and put all parts of the saxophone back into it’s proper place in the case to prevent damaging it. The alto saxophone is a single-reed instrument, meaning it only uses one reed. Saxophone reeds are slightly different to a clarinet, because they are wider for the same length. Saxophone mouthpieces are also similar to a clarinet’s, except the saxophones mouthpiece is larger and wider in the inner chamber and the neck on the instrument is inserted into the mouthpiece, unlike the clarinet’s which the mouthpiece is inserted into the barrel of the instrument. The alto saxophone is made of brass, but it is not categorized as a brass instrument because the sound waves are produced by an oscillating reed, not a player’s lips against the mouthpiece like brass instruments. It has been commonly claimed that the type of plating, finish, lacquer, or material used on the saxophone enhances the sound quality. Although that may be true, it can also be affected by the type of reed, mouthpiece, and the player. To clean a saxophone, you can simply pull a piece of cloth through the body and a piece through the neck to soak up all moisture in the instrument. You also can do this for the mouthpiece, and another way to clean a mouthpiece is to rinse it under warm tap water and dry it thoroughly. ~Animal_Lover Oops, I mean a CONCLUDING PARAGRAPH. ~Animal_Lover more

Resolved Question: What is the best Jazz Bb clarinet reed to use?!??!?!?! Reed Strength!?!?

I'm first lead alto in a Jazz Band and I also double on clarinet. Now I found my perfect Jazz reed for sax, but I can't quite find a good Bb Jazz clarinet reed, that won't just go plop when I try to accent the notes. I currently use a James M. Pyne star clarion PolyCrystal mouthpiece on a Buffet Crampton E11 clarinet. What is the best strength with this reed, what is the best ligature to use with this reed, and what reed it is. Voting Question: Is there anyone who would like to buy a baritone saxophone?

Low Bb Reynolds Baritone Saxophone! Made around 1962 this is a great playing Bari sax. I bought it 2 years ago and don’t play it anymore because I’ve decided to pursue playing alto. This is a GREAT playing horn, I’ve never heard low notes that sound this good or come out as easily on a bari sax. Original lacquer, BRAND NEW pads, comes with a neck strap, mouthpiece (Rico Royal B7) and ligature. Also comes with a BRAND NEW case as well, this is a fantastic playing Bari sax. Serial Number is 72549. I'm selling between $1500 to $2500, you can also see my crag's list page at: http://orlando.craigslist.org/msg/860320910.html (just ignore the price). more

Resolved Question: Anyone looking for a SAXOPHONE??

i have a Selmer Paris Super Action 80 Series II Professional Alto Saxophone that I bought brand new 5 years ago and I am looking to sell! I marched in the marching band in high school, took it to state competition in Austin 4 times, and it even made a trip with me to play in Washington DC once before. It has a high f# key, handcrafted engraving onthe bell, recently replaced pads, and it plays better than any sax i've ever picked up=] it has a warm, resonant sound that goes perfect for any genre that you are wanting to play, whether its jazz, classical, or even more contemporary styles. Also in the package is a hardwood case, outside leather protective case, C-star mouthpiece, ligature, and cover, neckstrap, and i've even thrown in a lyer!=] I bought this saxophone brand new for $3,800 but i am only looking to sell it for $950, which is a GREAT DEAL!, considering it still plays like new=] i live in northeast texas so email me! more

Resolved Question: Squeaking Noise with Alto Sax?

Hey everyone, I'm currently playing a alto sax, Custom EX, and I've made sure there arent any leaks etc. I'm playing on a meyer 5 star mouthpiece with a Rovner Jazz Ligature. Everytime I get up into the higher register while solo'ing I squeak a great deal. Now initially I blamed in on the horn but what constantly confuses me is the fact that it doesnt happen all the time. Another player told me it may be that my air is not concentrated, but that seems highly unlikely. Any and all opinions are greatly appreciated. Thank you very much more

Resolved Question: Expert Alto Saxophone players - Your advice needed?

Hello, I've just started out learning alto sax. I'm taking classes, but I still have the following problems. Wondering if you can throw some light on this: 1) I bought a used Yamaha YAS-23. My teacher checked it out & said it was good. Of late, when I play, the note gets mixed with some hissing sound which is like moisture from my mouth. Sounds gross; but how do I avoid this? This is happening more when I try to blow half and quarter notes. Even after I swab out all the moisture, this starts over. 2) I'm having trouble with half and quarter notes. I tried the technique of saying "tu" or "do" for tonguing but it ain't working. Either an empty sound comes out, or the "do" word just gets amplified. Could a better mouthpiece help? My teacher recommended a Selmer C* and a Rovner dark ligature combination. Please also recommend any websites that may offer some tips and suggestions. Thanks in advance! more
