“I went to the woods because I wished to live deliberately, to front only the essential facts of life, and see if I could not learn what it had to teach, and not, when I came to die, discover that I had not lived.” Transcendentalist Henry David Thoreau reflected a basic American principle: to discover oneself. Thoreau believed that self-discovery is sentimental and that it is important to find your true self then later find out that you were living behind the constraints of society. This Romantic Movement called Transcendentalism took place in the mid-1800s when finding yourself became increasingly important. In order to find one’s self, transcendentalists believed that nature was vital. American Literature overtime has displayed the theme of self-discovery because often people give into societal pressure without acknowledging who they are. Two novels that illustrate self-discovery are The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain set prior to the Civil War and The Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger. Both narrators, Huckleberry Finn and Holden Caulfield, set out on an adventure to discover themselves because they do not fit in with society. Huck, from Huckleberry Finn, and a runaway slave named Jim travel down the Mississippi River in the hope to reach free land without any major complications. Throughout this adventure, Huck faces an inner conflict whether or not to give into society and turn Jim in or help him escape to free territory. Similarly, Holden from The Catcher escapes to New York City after discovering he had been kicked out of Pencey Academy, his fourth private school. Holden strives to be “the catcher in the rye” to prevent growth in the innocent youth. As a result of these odysseys both narrators can be effortlessly compared. Briefly, both characters are in need of self-discovery because of their disbelief in the rules and judgments of society. In addition, both Huck and Holden use nature as a guide to discover themselves. Therefore, the protagonists encourage self-discovery and the use of nature as a result of their similar transcendentalist beliefs. So its a two paragraph intro about the comparison between the two novels... im discussing the transcendentalists belief of spirituality in nature AND self discovery ... please look for mechanical errors and any rewording synonyms or anything like that.... please and thank you :) moreResolved Question: Could somebody proof-read this for me?
At the time of his death, Emerson said the intelligence of Henry David Thoreau would not yet be appreciated with the world they had lived in then. American literature now considers Thoreau as one of the premiere foundations of the New England Renaissance. Thoreau’s writings on natural history and philosophy in his book Walden still astound readers from all walks of life. Thoreau, cunning and intelligent, dedicated his life to testing and applying Transcendentalist theory and philosophy (Pattern K). His experiences were written in volumes of books for everyone’s benefit. Perhaps his most profound statement in Walden reads as, “Simplicity, simplicity, simplicity! I say, let your affairs be as two or three, and not a hundred or a thousand.” By writing this, Thoreau clarifies that a life of simplicity can help lead a person to a life of happiness. Writing with experience, Thoreau elaborates on how to live a happy life. To achieve this, Thoreau repeats an insightful word, “Simplicity, simplicity, simplicity!” By repeating this single word three times, Thoreau puts emphasis on the seriousness of simplifying one’s life. Simplifying may include, but is not limited to, using public transportation or moving into a smaller home. Simple choices regarding lifestyle can have profound effects on a person. Electronics, entertainment, wealth—such things summarize the priorities of American Society (Pattern I). If not used in moderation these examples can do harm to a person’s well-being. Mobile devices are meant to make life easier, but in reality they do the exact opposite. A person can contact another person in a matter of seconds, and the easy access to social networking and news cites add more unnecessary details to a person’s life. Thoreau implies that people will live happier lives by simplifying day to day necessities. Thoreau offers more discernment on the topic of simplicity in the next part of his quote, “Let your affairs…” Here Thoreau vaguely imparts wisdom on the decisions and actions individuals make every day. Currently, America is consumed with the necessity for entertainment, wealth, and pleasure. It can almost be viewed as an addiction. Desires and tendencies (shortcomings people may face) must not over power the basic principles of life (Pattern J). By simplifying his affairs, Thoreau realized that he led a much more satisfying and meaningful life. Perhaps the most insightful part of his quote continues, “be as two or three not 100 or 1000” The primary connotation of the latter part of the quote focuses on the requirement of giving up unnecessary things that society views as necessary. People must disregard the small, irritating details that life throws at them and only focus on what is obligatory. The life a newly married couple may live mirrors the significance of this quote. Despite the fact that they have very few material possessions, they refuse to allow distractions to interfere with their love for one another. People can benefit from Thoreau’s counsel by following it, living by it, and leading a life of satisfaction (Pattern E). Henry David Thoreau put Transcendentalism to the test, and by doing so he came to an appreciation of life. Thoreau clearly proves that when someone has less, they are happy. If life is spent worrying about the little details in life, life will pass a person by. Actions should reflect priorities and if wants are prioritized over needs, people tend to suffer. By applying the advice of simplifying life, life will be much more joyful. moreResolved Question: Ralph Waldo Emerson Self-reliance questions?

I have to write an essay comparing/contrasting the Transcendentalist works of Emerson/Thoreau to another example of literature, music, or movie, etc. I am leaning toward citing "Walden" mostly. I was thinking about Breakfast at Tiffany's. In Thoreau's "Walden," some themes include the rejection of materialism. In B@T, she is a wannabe socialite and very materialistic, but eventually abandons a life like that, and the idea of marrying someone just for money or status, and goes with the man she actually loves. There is also self-reliance, the way she left her small town and older husband to move to New York. Another example of independence is how she never puts her unnamed cat in a cage because she feels that society cages people in. Another theme is the illusion of progress. She has more material goods, throws house parties, etc. but doesn't actually feel fulfilled. I know nature and oneness with spirit is a big or the main theme but I can't find a connection to a movie or book that isn't obvious. I am also thinking of doing Titanic. Would this comparison with B@T give me enough to work with for a 5-page essay, though? moreResolved Question: The Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring, is Samwise Gamgee considered a romantic hero?

can anyone proof read this for any grammatical errors please? and is there anything you would change? any tips on how to make the paragraphs flow better? thank you in advance American literature is characterized by several classifications of literature which represent many different phases in American history. Among these are Puritanism, Colonialism and Transcendentalism. These three movements share some characteristics but they oppose each other for other reasons. Generally speaking, the Puritan Era lasted from 1564 to 1660, and began in England when religious extremist migrated to North America because of religious persecution. The puritans were very religious and greatly feared eternal damnation as described by Jonathan Edwards. In Johnathan Edward’s, Sinners In The Hands of an Angry God, he tells his congregation that they are being “held over the pit of hell” and they can be tossed in at any moment. This caused great fear and panic which could explain the extreme devotion that the puritans had towards their religion. An event that displays the little tolerance towards secular activities is the Salem Witch Hunt. The Salem Witch Hunt was a result of paranoia within puritan community of Salem, which forever tainted the name of the puritans. Performing secular activities was looked down upon and being accused of this could mean life of death during the witch hunt. As is shown, the Puritan’s culture and lives were heavily influenced by religion. Colonialism, which was inspired by the colonists of America, urged revolution, and valued freedom, liberty, and unity. For example, The Declaration of Independence proclaimed our autonomy from Britain. The Declaration of Independence displays the perseverance and achievement of freedom, liberty, and self-determination as a country from an ever exploiting Britain. Patrick Henry persuades loyalists to fight England in his speech at the Virginia Convention. Patrick Henry urged that American Revolution was necessary and he was willing to fight because of the lack of freedom of British empowerment. In Benjamin Franklin’s Speech at the Constitutional Convention, he states that all people should agree to the constitution despite all the different opinions towards it. Benjamin Franklin valued unity and felt that disagreeing would only make them look weak to their enemies. The goals and achievements of the colonists helped shape the United States into what it is today. Transcendentalism surfaced and flourished in New England during the nineteenth century. The transcendentalist literary movement consisted of the belief that people are naturally good, people should follow their heart, nonconformity, and that government is not necessary. According to Ralph Waldo Emerson “envy is ignorance; [and] imitation is suicide”. In other words, Ralph Waldo imitating is suicide because one is killing their own personality; People should follow their own beliefs and not anyone else’s. Henry David Thoreau stated that “It is the uncivilized free and wild thinking that delights us”. Undoubtedly, this advocates Henry David Thoreau’s belief in the need for no government. Thoreau also believed that some “men lead lives of quiet desperation”. This “quiet desperation” is the regret that people feel after they have given up and sacrificed their dreams in order to be a part of what society thinks is cool, which conveys the importance of nonconformity within transcendental literature. Clearly, Transcendentalism introduced new ideas in literature, religion, culture, and philosophy which greatly influenced and exposed society. These time periods in American history were recorded by authors that streamed events, ideas and emotions through their writing which has allowed us to feel what they had felt. These ideas, and events expressed by the authors are what make up these literary eras in U.S. history. Although these eras may have similar characteristics, they differ in many ways.sorry if you cant tell when a new paragraph starts, yahoo didnt want to indent -__- moreResolved Question: Can anyone please proofread this please!?

These ideas, and events expressed by the authors are what make up these literary eras in U.S. history. Although these eras may have similar characteristics, they differ in many ways.sorry if you cant tell where a new paragraph starts, yahoo didnt want to indent -__- moreResolved Question: What were Thoreau's views on war overall?
Im writing a paper and i was thinking of writing about how Thoreau would react to the war in Afghanistan. I know he opposed the Mexican-American war, but how do you think he would feel about this one? What was his overall view of war? moreTop Transcendentalism Transcendentalists Links
