Resolved Question: How can I be sure of online security when hiring a self-employed computer technician to help fix my PC?

I have two big problems with my computers.1) The desktop PC has 'crashed' making all my files inaccessible. And if I use computers at home or away, and try to use Outlook Express it doesnt recognise me anymore?. So, I have urgent need of a knowledgeable, trustworthy PC technician to reboot the desktop, help me save my files to something:ie disc or flashdrive?,and re-install Windows XP & upload an anti-virus software., and 2) to help me sign on to message people via Outlook Express. My caution in hiring someone, is for security. Does a PC Tech arrive and leave empty-handed ? How can one be sure they dont make copies? Is there a foolproof way I can 'screen' a technician BEFORE hiring them to feel certain they are reliable, and know what they are talking about? They could spin any old yarn and I would have to believe them, just like some motor mechanics., and charge the earth.!! What sort of price am I looking at ??? in GBP? HELP/Advise? more

Resolved Question: ACK!! Help with computer virus?!?! What in the world is Anti-virus XP?

on www.ndsr.net I downloaded a game called avatar. At 88% of the games download this thing popped up ( windows security center) saying that my firewall and anti-virus XP were off. Next thing you know the unregistered version of Anti-virus XP pops up telling me that " Virus INfectio or Security Breach"! Beware! Spyware infection was found. Your system security is at risk. Private information may get stolen, and your PC activity may get monitored. Click for an anti-spyware scan. This isn't the normal anti-virus program I use. So I haven't clicked on that program, instead I ran my usual anti-virus online protection thing "Rogers Online Protection" and it hasn't seem to have found any viruses yet. Its at 33% with a clear plate. Stealth Intrusion! Infection detected in the background. Your computer is now attacked by spyware and rogue software. Eliminate the infection safely and begin your deletion progress now. that also just popped up =_= I have gone to the control panel and the add/remove program panel on windows but it doesn't show the anti-virus XP Well if anyone knows whats going on .... could they please reply.. i only need answers from the people who KNOW what is happening right now... If anyone knows if Anti-virus XP is a reliable program and that it really is telling the truth it would be really helpful if you could tell me .. I would really appreciate it : ] HELLLPP!! thanks, more

Open Question: Should I use Avast! or Microsoft Forefront Client Security?

I just installed Windows 7 onto my Home PC and need to make the anti-virus decision once again. I had been using avast! back on Windows XP, but can also switch, and Microsoft Forefront Client Security is one of the pieces of software I have available. Which of the two would be better to use? Of course if theres a third one I've been overlooking I could go for that two, but being a student I wouldn't be looking to drop some cash on a program. This system is a 3.4 GHz with HT and 2 gigs of RAM. Simple and gets the jobs done. more

Open Question: Strange folders appearing in my hard drive!!! Could this mean my pc is infected?

I have 2 computers at home. One is a laptop which I move around, and the other is a PC which is wired to the router. Connected to the PC is an external hard drive which I share over the network with the laptop. Recently, all of a sudden, a folder appeared in the root directory of the external hdd! The name is just a random string of numbers and letters with an icon showing a folder with a small lock by its side. Inside this folder there are 2 more folders named amd64 and i386, but I can't look inside those folders because access is denied!! Even NOD32, which is the anti-virus which I use, can't scan them! I recently updated both computers to Windows 7 (the laptop was running Vista, and the PC XP) and I had somewhat of a hard time configuring the external usb hdd to be shared over the network. Could this strange folder have something to do with Windows 7 shares, or could it be some kind of malware? more

Open Question: I just had Windows ask me for a captcha. What does that mean?

Well, the whole story goes like this. My mom's boyfriend (chad) opened up his face book and got a message that had a link, to a virus. He opened it not expecting anything, and 3 trojan horses (now I've found about 6) flooded into the pc. I have tried using Avast Anti-Virus to get rid of them and most of them are gone. One problem remains though, Windows (XP) keeps asking me to fill in a captcha (those weird word with lines and stuff things), and I was wondering two things about it: 1. Why is it doing it? 2. Is it Windows, or is it the Trojan? Any help would be nice, and VERY appreciated! -BretOk, I just read the replies. THREE NEW THINGS: 1. The captcha is the virus, I typed in random stuff and it still worked 2. All virus protection program sites are now "broken" on my pc, they wont load in the browser (google chrome) 3. When I click links it sends me to bizarre places, one of them a yahoo site more

Open Question: What to do in this situation?

My computer will not let me install an anti virus software on it. All the softwares I've tried such as AVG, and Avira initiate installing but stop halfway through the setup unexpectedly. I tried installing them onto a flash drive but later on when I try to run them, they don't work. An error message comes up saying that the application was not installed properly and re-installing it might work, I've tried re-installing them 5 times but still nothing. For Avast, it says it successfully installs on my computer, but later when I run it, the same error message comes up. I've also used malwarebytes and stinger to remove all threats that I could possibly find in hopes to alleviate the problem so anti virus software/softwares might be able to be installed, but nothing still. I do not have the OS disc that came with the computer, so formatting and re-installing windows is not an option. My OS is Windows XP. Before you waste your time, which you could use to do somthing more useful rather than staying on the computer all day, answer only if you have a solution. Don't tell me to get a new computer, or talk about the OS disc and what not. Stop making Yahoo! Answers more useless and unreliable as it already is. more

Open Question: Computer crashes, "blue screen of death"?

Last night my computer crashed. I had just installed a new iTunes update, and I think that might have did it. A few hours after I installed it, it started running slow and eventually froze up, so I forced a restart. Now, it goes through a loop where it prompts you to do safe mode/start windows normally, then I click and the XP loading screen pops up, followed by the blue screen and then it restarts again. I tried to start it in Safe Mode, start it normally, go back to the last known configuration, nothing's working. This is the error message that pops up: "A problem has been detected and Windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer. If this is the first time you've seen this stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps: Disable or uninstall any anti-virus, disk defragmentation or backup utilities. Check your hard drive configuration, and check for any updated drivers. Run CHKDSK /F to check for hard drive corruption, and then restart your computer. Voting Question: Please HELP! I did a system restore, it deleted pictures.?

So we got a computer from my girlfriend's mom. It's and HP from 2002 w/ Windows XP Home Edition (hello, it's 2010!). There was a Trojan virus and so we did a system restore. I only cared about the pictures on the computer, so i put them on a flash drive. After the System Restore, the virus was removed but the pictures and documents were still on the computer. Were they supposed to be there still? Then one day after having the internet, we got ANOTHER virus (dr guard, blah). Anti-virus programs couldn't remove it, so we did yet another system restore. We're obv. not "computer" ppl. We're seasoned pros with the internet and most programs, we're just not experts with how they work. After repeated system recoveries, most of the pictures that were on the computer prior to recovery are gone and i apparently only copied a shortcut to the picture folder :( Is there hope in recovering the pictures? more

Resolved Question: Questions about Threatfire?

NOTE: I asked this question earlier today but I got unsatisfactory answers so I'm asking it again with slightly different details. I was thinking of getting Threatfire (still deciding on it) as an extra layer of protection for my PC. I researched Threatfire and saw that it has "Real-time behavior based protection". What concerns me about Threatfire is that will it cause conflicts with anti-viruses or anti-threat software that has a "real-time protection" feature? I heard that Threatfire isn't supposed to clash with other antivirus software but I'm not really convinced about it. Also, does Threatfire work along side well with most Internet Security suites (paid and free). Does Threatfire have any gripes or issues I should look out for? I heard rumors that.... -Threatfire contains a keylogger. -Threatfire causes many people's keyboard to stop working. -It slows down your system or it could crash your system! Are some of these rumors true? Despite all these concerns, I still might get Threatfire in the end but should I get it or not? NOTES: I plan to put Threatfire on my second laptop, a IBM Thinkpad running Windows XP SP 3. My IBM Thinkpad has the free versions of Avira Anti-Antivirus, MalwareBytes, and Superantispyware. Even though Avira Antivir doesn't have some sort of "real-time protection" feature, I'm still concerned about it because I'm planning to buy an antivirus software soon. more

Resolved Question: Threatfire questions?

I was thinking of getting Threatfire (still deciding on it) as an extra layer of protection for my PC. I researched Threatfire and saw that it has "Real-time behavior based protection". What concerns is me that if I install Threatfire along side my Antivirus (Kaspersky Internet Security 2010), will it cause conflicts with Kaspersky's real-time scanning or any other anti-viruses or anti-threat software that has a "real-time protection" feature? I heard that Threatfire isn't supposed to clash with other antivirus software but I'm not really convinced about it. Also, does Threatfire work along side well with most Internet Security suites (not just the Anti-virus portion. Please note that many Anti-virus companies sell an Anti-virus AND Internet Security suite product separately. I just want to know about the Internet Security suite). NOTE: I have a three-year old Dell Inspirion 1405 running Windows XP SP 3.Zep516, I don't know if you used or heard of Threatfire before but I did some extensive research and I heard that Threatfire technically ISN'T an antivirus program like Kaspersky. To future answerers: correct me if I'm wrong on this but I don't think Threatfire is an antivirus like Kaspersky.Oh yeah ,the second answerer made me think about something. I would suppose that Threatfire would only be good to work along side FREE antiviruses because they're not that heavy as paid antiviruses?NOTE: I already use the free versions of MalwareBytes and Superantispyware. more

Hi guys I currently running windows XP and recently got infected with XP anti spyware. I ran microsoft security essentials which got rid of it but it also looks like it (or the virus) has damaged most of the files on the computer. Now when I go to use system restore I get the file not found message and am unable to restore. I no longer have the XP installation disc as a bough the computer several years ago, is there anyway of downloading the files i need off of the internet? Resolved Question: My laptop has a virus, I sort of brought it on myself because i thought my laptop could handle it but?

I downloaded a file that my computer told me was dangerous because I had malwarebytes anti-malware. I think I took a bit too long in scanning my pc with it. It started acting up moments before I actually scanned it but i was ignoring all of the distractions. Then after the scanning was finished, I clicked on the Remove Selected button but right as i did the virus took over and shut down my computer. Now it just shows the Windows XP loading screen (with the blue loader bar in the middle of the screen, you know?) then quickly, for like a milisecond shows a blue screen with some writing that's hard to make out. Then it goes to the screen asking me whether I want to start Windows normally or use Safe Mode etc. I went to safe mode, used Malwarebytes, used quick scan then full scan but Windows still doesn't show up. I tried a system restore but it doesn't work! I can only choose to restore it to a previous date in time, I can't restore it using a Backup or Destructive like on my Desktop. I can't reinstall the OS, I don't even know how to do that, I don't have a disc or whatever to do that. Help? Ugh. it's been such a bad day today. March 6, 2010. WORST DAY EVER. more

Resolved Question: Windows Vista and it's Shitty Windows Explorer stops responding when attempting to open Computer?

Okay, my problem is, when I open the toolbar, everything is fine. When I select Computer(I can't click it due to setting's, I just scroll over it and the thing's inside it will appear as a bar next to it.), it will either(30 70 chance) be normal, or it will stop responding. I am trying to install my GTA:SA(the problem with the game is, it say's its already installed when it's not, causing me to explore the cd and installing it by hand.) by going to computer, and then doing as so. BUT! Either Windows Explorer will stop responding and making me restart either the computer or Windows Explorer, or just screwing up the game by stopping Windows Explorer in the middle of the Installation and causing me to restart the WHOLE computer and doing the whole process again, hoping that the 1% in the 99.999999999999% of successfully installing onto my external hard drive. ATTENTION! I have 5 anti virus protection programs, and I use 3 online virus checkers every week, so it will not be a virus, so don't say "OH ITS A VIRUS YOU GOTTA DOWNGRADE TO XP AND GO TO LINUX CUZ ITS FAST AND GETS NOT VIRUSES". Please, none of that bullcrap. more

Resolved Question: how do i transfer information from my computer to a disk?

Okay so recently my father's computer had a virus on it saying that his computer was trying to be over-run/ hacked. He tried getting rid of it with both an anti-virus software and a spyware software program he paid for and they ended up doing their job in clearing out other smaller threats but the pop up window with the over-run/hacked message still popped up, thus unabling him to connect to the internet with internetexplorer. So he called 'geek squad' and they told him that he needed to transfer all of his files and information from the computer onto a disk so that they can wipe out all the current information. That's the part he needs help on and i didn't know how to do it either. Any help would be really good and step by step would be better. His computer is a Windows XP, he does not have an external hard drive and would like to transfer all information onto the same computer's cd/dvd drive. Help........... more

A couple of days ago using the same computer and the same OS (Windows 7 Ultimate 32-bit) I could connect to the internet without any problems, recently I couldn't anymore (I use Wifi and another computer beside me running XP still has internet access while I don't though I'm also connected to the same connection). I didn't install anything new recently, nor did I get any Windows update, And I don't have an anti-virus but I'm pretty sure I haven't downloaded any virus recently more

Resolved Question: What files do I need to save? And How do I do it?

I am trying to copy back up files before I format my computer's hard disk. All I want to do is to save all the files needed for my computer to completely work after I erase everything on the drive. As long as it runs and I can just re-install the programs I want. I have time for that. I only have one hard drive on my desktop comp. Can anyone tell me the specific folders I might need to copy? I'm sure that all XP computers include the same system files so that is why I am asking. It would be helpful and faster if I know what I essentially need to copy. Everything is saved where it should be and I don't save stuff around unreasonably. Oh, and sometimes when copying is in progress, an error comes up saying that the file is in use and cannot be moved, but I have everything closed and nothing running. My comp has Windows XP and I am using an external hard drive to copy files I need. And what is the QUARANTINE folder? Do I also need to copy that? Or is that where the anti virus program quarantines stuff? Cause I have an anti-virus program so yeah....Do I just right click to copy files i want and paste it wer i want it saved or wat? Cz wen i do dat it keeps saying that its in use bt i dnt hav anything open...WTF???!??!!?!?!!>!>!!>! more

Resolved Question: Linux boot cd for windows?

I have users in my office who regularly screw up windows xp/vista laptops, despite having anti-virus, service packs etc. installed. I am at my wit's end - solving their issues again and again. But, I have an idea. What if I use a linux boot cd/live distro to boot up their conked off windows laptops - during an emergency ! I will be really thankful if someone can suggest an excellent linux live distro or boot disk ! Please remember - my users must be able to open their ms-office documents (word, excel, ppt) at least for viewing or running them. Is there any linux distro which resembles windows desktop with capability to read ms-office documents too ? Thanks a ton !!Thanks a lot. I am overwhelmed with the answers. Most of them serve a purpose, but what I exactly want is : A linux 'pure' live CD that is very very close to windows look and feel. It should in no way damage existing windows files on the laptop but open all ms office files in an emergency ! Please suggest a tested, perfect distro to download and use. Thanks again. more

Resolved Question: What exactly is a generic host process?

I am running Windows XP and I have Mcafee anti-virus. I recently had a bad case of trojans and worms and ultimately had to do a system restore back to factory settings. After doing this, McAfee still finds this "Windows/System32/svchost.exe, Generic Host Process for Win 32 services" and it tells me that it cannot delete this. McAfee keeps popping up with this generic host process asking if I want to allow or block this change to my computer. I always choose block, but is this process dangerous and is there a way to permanently remove it? more

Resolved Question: For the money, what is the BEST anti-virus program?

Help! I'm being plagued by viruses, phishing, spam and pop-ups. My Internet browsing and email programs have slowed to a crawl. I'm in the market for a good anti-virus program. I've looked a lot of them, but I don't know which one to trust. A few particulars: I'm running Windows XP and Mozilla Firefox is my browser. Here's hoping there's a really computer literate being out there who can help me. Thanks! more

Resolved Question: Windows XP "lagging"...?

I have a Windows XP Pro with a quad core, 2.4 GHz and 3 gigs of RAM. I'm having trouble with it because whenever I open something, mainly in Firefox 3.5 when starting up or loading a page, it does a strange lag spike for about 5 seconds where i cant do anything and nothing "pops up" (eg the red cross for closing doesn't light up). Ive got 2 hard drives (160 and 500) which were reformatted about a month ago. I'm a gamer and the PC is about 2-3 years old. My anti virus is good and i have no viruses! Please help me sort this out! more

Voting Question: Problem with System Restore.?

Ok. Here's my problem. This all started when my computer had an attack from "XP anti-virus pro 2010". I found a forum online and followed their instructions on how to get rid of it: I went to RUN and typed in COMMAND, then when the black window popped up I typed in NOTEPAD and one opened. Then I pasted what they said to paste in the document and saved it as EXEFIX. Afterwards I double clicked it to open and it said something about being "successful"... right... Then I downloaded SpywareDoctor and ran a scan and clicked the fix problem button (big mistake [=n=]nIn) That didn't do squat at all, because I needed to buy the program in order for it to do $HI+.. ORO.... But anyways, I rebooted after all this and everything looked promising.... But just in case I messed anything up on my comp I wanted to do SYSTEM RESTORE. So I did what I always do when I use system restore, but it just wouldn't restore....................... I clicked to "restore to ealier time" NEXT I clicked a restore point (before all this $HI+ happened) NEXT and then when I click NEXT to confirm my restore point selection.... nothing happened........ WHHHHHHHHHHHYYYYYYYYYYYY? I even booted up in safe mode and tried SYSTEM RESTORE from there, but still nothing happened!!! And now my comp won't connect to the internet.............. WAHHHHH! I need help [o_e]; ...can someone tell me a solution to this problem? or am I just better off using my recovery discs and redo the whole damn comp... PLEASE let that not be the case... I appreciate your answers in advance. (I used my sister's computer to type this, since the internet on mine is f**ked.) more

Resolved Question: What is the best anti-virus software for a windows XP "PC" ?

Resolved Question: Having system restore problems (XP Professional)?

For Windows XP. When I try to create one manually, I can't type into the box and when actually I decide to select one in the hypothetical case of restoring my computer...the days and months thing are blank. My anti-virus is Avast, and my Anti-Spyware is Spybot S&D...I am using TeaTimer. I tried the registry fix thing but so far that seems fine, and I don't know what else to do.Well, I like to know if there is an easier solution before I resort to reinstalling XP. more

Voting Question: Why does my computer freeze up and can't boot from the OS CD?

My desktop computer, a Dell dimension 3000 with a windows XP operating system freezes up once you get to the desktop. The mouse moves but clicking on icons or the start menu does nothing. The keyboard works in that I can click cap lock and it will cap lock. But I can't bring up the start menu or anything like that from the keyboard. I can bring up the task manager or the shut down screen option with the Ctrl + Alt + delete, but clicking any option there is useless and does nothing. I figured this had to do with the updated Avast anti-virus, so I tried to boot from my Windows OS CD to set my computer back to the factory settings, but I can't boot from the CD. I tried hitting F12 and telling it to boot form the CD and tried the setting up my computer (F2) to boot from the CD first, but nothing. Each time, it just ignores the prompt and goes to windows screen and then to the log on screen. So, I basically can't even restore the computer back to the factory settings. So, can anyone tell me what's wrong with my computer and what to do about it myself? Thanks.I've already tried loading in safe mode, and it's the same results. And yes, the fact that it's a Dell does make it pretty shoddy and it is about 6 years old. more
