Resolved Question: idioms in press..a couple of questions?

Hello! I am fond of studying English language and British culture through idioms, proverbs and phrases found in newspapers and magazines. Being nuts about this topic I've decided to devote my research work to it.. Will you please answer a couple of questions below so that we could find what role idioms that live on newspaper pages play in our lives? Thanks a lot! 1. What is your favourite periodical? 2. Why do you think idioms and phrases are used by the authors of newspaper and magazine articles? A. to make the speech more attractive and impressive B. to influence the readers’ opinion C. to express arguments in a more economical way D. to preserve the figurative language as a part of culture and promote it’s usage E. Your variant 3. Why do you personally use idioms in speech? 4. If you come across an idiom you’ve never seen before or an impressively transformed one, would you use it in your speech? A. I’d rather do B. I’d rather not 5. What idiom, phrase or proverb you like most? Thanks! more

Open Question: What do you think of my speach?

Hello, if anyone would like to read my speach and give me some constructive critisism that would be great :) thanks Have you ever opened a magazine and all you saw were pictures of females with absolutly no flaws? Girls, have you ever felt pressured by these commericials advertising your favorite products? Pressure from the media in teen girls is a fast growing problem that leaves many girls feeling bad and unhappy with their apperance and bodies. In the past few decades a strong image of what is "beautiful" has corrupted the minds of many girls, making them feel as if they are not good enough. So what can this pressure do to the female population? Many diseases such as anorexia can be triggered by this pressure. Anorexia is a disease in which you starve yourself and do not take in the nutrients necissary to live a normal healthy life. This pressure can also result in severe depression that can virtually destroy your life. Exposure to this unrealistic image starts at a very young age. Dolls and toys such as Barbie, protrays an unhealthy image of a stick thin flawless body. These dolls set a steriotype in which girls think they should follow. A study was done with girls in US and the results concluded that 86% of girls under the age of 18 admitted to dieting or at one point thought they should loose weight. In this percentage of girls, one percents condition will advance to a full blown eating disorder which CAN result to death. Eating disorders have the highest mortality rate in all mental illnesses. All this buzz about what we are expozing to the worlds youth has got many celebrities concerned. Awareness to these problemes is becoming incresingly popular . For example, supermodel Tyra Banks, host of the hit TV show "Americas next top model" recently decided to eliminate the 5 foot 8 standard model height and let woman of any height audition for the show. She also supports plus size models and is one herself. Also, hit talk show host Oprah Winfrey is incredibly passionate about this pressure caused my the media. She quotes "I finally realized that being grateful of my body was key to giving more love to myself. " Recently, you may have seen commericials by dove advertising their "campagne for real beauty." This campagnes mission is to make more woman feel beautiful every day by widening steriotypical views of beauty. The brands commitment starts with using real woman, not professional models, of various ages, shapes and sizes to provoke discussion and debate about todays typical beauty images. Dove did a survey and they found that only 2% of women think that they are beautiful and one third strongly agree that the media and advertising set an unrealistic standard for beauty that most woman cant ever achieve. So, what can you do to help solve this problem? Look in the mirror. Find something you like about yourself and try to focus on that other than your flaws. You will quickly find that you feel better about your apperarence. Also, you may be the only one who notices these flaws in yourself. Always remember, you are your own worst criticnot judged on spelling by the way. im not handing and copy of the speech in, i have to read it in front of the class more

Resolved Question: What are my chances of getting the Trustee Scholarship in BU?

Hello, I'm interested in applying for the merit-based trustee scholarship in Boston University and I was wondering if anyone could comment on my chances. I am currently a junior in High School and have transferred schools twice in the last 4 years. I am also an IB student, and my first semester predicted grades for the IB (without the extra 3 points) were 38/42. I am involved in MINDS, a volunteer service for intellectually disabled children. I have been a member of my previous school's Dance Team for two years before moving school. However, I was the choreographer for my current school's United Nations Performance group, and I also frequently teach dance workshops to the younger high school students. I was a Student Council member in 10th grade, and was the founder and president of an Image Manipulation Club, and the one of two leaders in another school's Short Film Club. Aside from this, I have/am participating in Creative Journal, Photography Club, Multi-Media Support Group (Volunteer service), Theatre Group (1 out of 10 students), and Art Decoration Club. I have also participated in two major productions or plays in high school as well as performed in and won a school talent show. This summer I am planning on getting an internship for a magazine company. I am also going to take my first attempt at the SATs in June. I'm sorry if this question came across as bragging, because I had no intention of doing so. I am just worried about my future and I was wondering about what possible options I have. more

Resolved Question: Why does Shiloh get dressed like a boy while Zahara gets dressed like a girl?

No, they are not my children. I seen this question being asked the other day by sum1 else& wasn't happy with the answers. Shiloh been done this way since she was a newborn and small baby. Check out PPL's magazine and Hello Magazine Shiloh's 1st pictures so Shiloh picking her own clothes is not an excuse. I read that Shiloh spends over 50% of her time w/a nanny while Angelina be with the other children more. It looks like Brad wants to be with Shiloh and his last 2 babie more but Angelina won't let that happen. I love Angelina so don't get me wrong. Angelina reffered to Shiloh as a blog all bcos she was a newborn but she adopted her 1st two kids at the time when they were 6 months. 6 months is not all dat different from a newborn so was they also blogs? She made it clear it's hard to feel for and love her own child. What type of mother is that? I can't believe you PPl sugar coat things all becasue she's a celebrity and donate only 1/3 of her money 2 charity. There are plenty of PPL's shoes who feet she wouldn't be made 2 wipe. Plz! Shiloh looks like a str8 boy as if they R trying 2 promote her to be a boy or something. As a newborn baby she already referred 2 Shiloh as a blob & said she have to be conscious not 2 ignore her "own" baby's needs. That's a damn shame more

Voting Question: What are some pop culture and media images associated with the 1950s?

Hello one and all, I've been assigned the 1950s as a decade to examine the values and ideals of that society for my Media course by examining popular culture at that time (namely movies, products, magazines and advertisements). I have to think about these two questions in regards to this topic. Any help would be greatly appreciated. 1. What do your examples reveal about the following values in your decade (only the ones that apply; minimum of three): Beauty/Glamor Simplicity/Technology Family Sexuality Age/Youth Conservatism/Liberalism Passivity/Action Peace/Violence 2. Based on what the media reveals, what do you think this society valued? Do you think the media makes a fair representation of this decade? Why or why not? The toughest part about this assignment is that I have to find a feature film from the '50s, and present a five-minute clip from that film that reflects my findings. Knowing next to nothing about films from the '50s, I'll need some possible suggestions. What films from that decade reflect the popular culture/values of that time? It would be super if I could be given some direction. Much thanks to anyone who will help! more

Resolved Question: Do you remember Allan Sherman's parody songs?

The reason I ask is because I referenced his "Hello Muddah, Hello Faddah" in an answer the other day and thought to go to YouTube and look them up. There are many funny songs that I never even heard of. I believe he was also involved in a free speech issue with Mad magazine that went to the Supreme Court and was ruled in his favor, but I might be wrong about that. Do you know anything about this? I know I could go to Google, but it's more fun this way. more

Resolved Question: Jehovah Witness's and the resurrection?

Hello I would like you to help me clear up some things I am struggling to understand please. 1. First I thought that only good people who are JWs get resurrected yet I notice in Dec 2009 Watchtower magazine that Acts 24v15 says 'there is going to be a resurrection of both the righteous and the unrighteous'. 2. If I become a JW and die before Armageddon and get resurrected to live on Paradise earth that Jehovah will remake my body and put in memories from when I am alive now. Will He remake my body from the same dust and in the meantime where will my memories and memories of others be stored until the resurrection? 3. As Jehovah will need to rebuild our bodies, can I ask do JWs only believe in burial then and not cremation? I am thankful for you helping me with my inquisitveness about your religion. Have a nice day. NJB more

Resolved Question: Review first few pages of my teen girl novel?

First few pages, tell me what u think Chapter 1: Every Story Has a Beginning Life can be hard Or life can be great, It depends on your choices And what lies in your fate. You can be loyal and caring, Live life with laughter and love, And do just what is wanted From the heavens looking out from above. Or you could be different, Rebellious, regretful, and sly, Hurting yourself and others When you cheat and lie. It’s all up to you And the decisions you make, What you do with your time And the friends that you take. So now I hope as you go Through life knowing this, You make the right choices And don’t regret what you miss. Bella Beckham stopped writing. She stared at the last line she had written and then shook her head, pen hovering over the small book with the blue velvet cover. Then, with a sudden gesture, she lifted her head and threw pen and book at the big bay window, where they bounced off harmlessly and landed on the upholstered window seat in her English classroom. When she was fifteen she knew exactly what she wanted. She had wanted the same at twelve. Everything. But now she had made up her mind how to go about attaining it. She was going to trade on her looks, her best and perhaps only talent as far as she was concerned. She thought she could act, or at least learn how. It had to be easier than algebra, or English lit, or any of those other dreary classes in school. But one way or another, she was going to be a star. And she was going to make it on her own. For some weird and wonderful reason, she felt that her whole life was some sort of dream and she sometimes wondered whose it was and whether they were enjoying it. Although, she had a luminous quality- a combination of wistfulness, radiance, yearning, that set her apart and yet made everyone wish to be part of it, to share in the childlike naiveté which was at once so shy and yet so vibrant, a fascinating combination of innocence and experience. The splendor and sparkle she displayed personified Hollywood glamour with an unparalleled glow and energy that enamored the world. Although she was an alluring beauty with voluptuous curves and a generous pout, she was more than a flawlessly flexible sex goddess. Her apparent vulnerability and innocence, in combination with sensuality, had eventually endeared her to the global consciousness. After all, she was stunning in photographs, her unique essence easily captured by the camera lens. The thought of how her beauty might translate onto the big screen was a tantalizing one. Still, it was a daunting proposition, especially since she had virtually no acting experience- not even in school plays, where so many professional actresses were able to at least garner some minor experience. The situation was terribly unfair, because Bella was made for paparazzi stalkers and tabloid headline notoriety. She constantly dreamed of velvet ropes and open bars, aviator sunglasses and seaweed scrubs, sexy photo shoots, peacock-feathered stilettos, Hello-Kitty messenger bags, pony-skin handbags, and gold-leaf invitations to VIP events. The kind of exclusive fete frequented by glossy-magazine editors, DJs, models, photographers, stylists, kindersocialites, the several pseudocelebrities "cajoled" into showing up (Miley Cyrus, Tyra Banks, Lindsay Lohan) as well as the legions of assorted fashionable hangers-on — aggressive party crashers who more often than not spend their days manning the M.A.C. counter at Bloomingdale's — star-struck kids with a talent for self-invention who had just arrived in the city from Bora-Bora...or Bermuda. So where did Bella go wrong? In the back of her mind, she always thought that by the time she reached fifteen, she’d have something: either a rich and successful boyfriend who kept her in couture or else a fabulous and fulfilling Hollywood career that garnered the respect and envy of her peers. But instead of ascending up the New York circles via legacy or meritocracy, she spent her days in dingy school classrooms and her nights in front of the television, basking in the presence of Hannah Montana and Oprah. Truthfully, her life was unbearably empty and meaningless, not to mention mind-bogglingly boring. Was it Albert Einstein who said an unexamined life is not worth living? Possibly. But as the advent of a twenty-four-hour Reality Channel (which broadcasts innumerable information about ordinary people transplanted into extraordinary circumstances, the reward of surviving their ordeal a seat on David Letterman's couch) proved, it's an undocumented life that's not worth living. If one's every move isn't gossip-column fodder or fan-website worthy, did one even matter in the grand scheme of things? And darlings, Bella wanted to matter. She wanted to matter very, very desperately. Unfortunately, the jet set was simply so talented (days of lolling about in Mercedes unquestionably over) — but the only thing she seemed to have accomplished was the ability to shop while blThe rest of the paragraph: Unfortunately, the jet set was simply so talented (days of lolling about in Mercedes unquestionably over) — but the only thing she seemed to have accomplished was the ability to shop while blindfolded. How utterly humiliating to realize that she still hadn't made a handsome match while saving the world with a cure for cancer, or at least hosting a benefit for the cause. Everyone in Hollywood had a cause, either because they were truly philanthropic or because it made them look like they were. Like most wistful dreamers, she desired to join the glittering glamour of show business and prance on a cavernous stage with sweat seeping down her bosom, moaning to sexy lyrics as if in ecstasy much to the delight of the lust-craved boys in the audience. Not enough room! That is only like 1 and a half pages (2 paragraphs), but you get the idea. tell me what u think? more

Voting Question: Headaches everyday, why?

Hello everyone, I think I'm just being a worry wart but I was reading an article in a magazine where a little girl's leg collapsed and other sorts of things which resulted in her having a brain tumor. Now, this brought up an old memory where about 6 years ago my right leg used to spontaneously go very weak and just collapse, leaving me on the floor. It didn't happen often, and has stopped now. But after reading the article it's left me slightly worried why it used to do that. Recently, I have been getting a headache everyday. I wake with a very mild headache which progresses into a moderate headache everyday. I get pressure in my temples and behing my left eye, and dizziness. Last night I got some tingling down the side of my face. I suffer from severe migraines about once every 2 months. Could these 2 symptoms be linked to a brain tumor (even though I don't suffer from one of the symptoms anymore) or am I being very silly and worrying far too much and have a bad case of Hypocondria?Hehe. Thanks for reading. more

Voting Question: Inconsiderate husband, or am I a bad wife?

I am starting to think that my husband...or I...am doing something wrong. I can't help but think "what am I doing to deserve this?" My husband stays up all night playing video games or is on the computer, and he sleeps all day. He is unemployed, and is not looking for work. He tried to get unemployment, but because he quit his job without notice, he was denied. Since then, all he does is laze around. I work full time as a caregiver in mental health, which can be stressful at times. I try to take care of the house, but whenever I try, he tells me I'm doing it wrong and should just get out of his way. He washes a plate, and then goes back to his game, and yells at me when I try to do it. He can be irresponsible sometimes - we have a pet rat and three pet mice. He does not let me go near the cages, but does not clean them himself. Today, I had a really awesome day at work. I felt accomplished - I had gotten a lot done, and came home singing a song in my head and was in a great mood. Today, like many other days, I asked him to do three thing - change the rats bedding, the mice's bedding, and put new water in the fishbowl. He swore up and down that he would get it done. When I got home, he was on the computer, and they weren't changed out. I honsetly didn't think anything about it, and I just started to do it myself. Not spitefully - I was in a great mood, and felt like accomplishing something at home like I did at work today. I go to the mice cage and start taking it apart on the kitchen counter (literally the only flat surface in the house besides the top of the entertainment center - which is as tall as I am) and this is what he says... not even a hello when I got home... "What the fuck are you doing? Don't fucking touch that! Can't you just leave anything alone? Oh that's right, you always do what you fucking want to do. Just leave that the fuck alone!" Well my good mood was gone and I immediately started to cry. I got my coat and keys, and I left the house. I didn't want to be around that, I didn't feel like I deserved it. When I think about how fustrated I get with him, I can't help but wonder if he gets just as fustrated as me, and the thought really upsets me. I try really hard to be supportive of him right now - I know he does not like the fact that his wife is working and he isn't. He want's to be the provider, and I understand. He asked me to deposit my paycheck into his account, so he can pay all the bills, etc, and I do it because I know how it bugs him when I do it. I sometimes ask for some money for like a magazine or a soda, but he tells me we can't afford it even though I make enough for bills, savings, and some extra. What is it that I'm doing wrong? What did I do to bother him so much that as soon as I get in the door, he starts screaming and yelling at me? I really want our marriage to work, but I can't help but think I'm ruining everything. I've asked him to go to counseling, and he did go the first session. He refused to continue them after thought though, even though they were free. This has been going on for a while, and I used to fight it tooth and nail. I would fight with him about how upset it made me, and how I felt like he didn't care about me at all. After a while, he just seemed to stop caring about whether or not he hurt my feelings. more

Resolved Question: Need feedback? Please... Is it good?

Okay so this is my story. Basically these kids get stranded on a deserted island (later in the story). If I get answers on here, then I will post the story on my blog. My blog is www.blogger.com and my account is Hannah.13.ily. So read it there! <3 I stared out the window as dad continued driving down the highway. We were on our way to the holiday house my dad’s friends owned and a bunch of kids from school and not from school were apparently going. Oh joy. “Hannah? Can you pass me something to eat?” My three year old brother Jack asked. “Yeah.” I pulled out a banana and gave it to him. “Does anyone else want something?” I offered. I glanced at my other four sisters and brothers. Selina and Holly, and Xavier and Charlie, and of course Jack was there too. They all shook their heads. “Mum, how long till we get there?” Holly whined. “Holly, I told you ten minutes ago. We’ll be there soon.” Mum told her. Holly and Xavier were twins, both six. Charlie was five, Jack was three, and Selina and I were twins too. Selina and I are sixteen. We were both unhappy about having to spend our school holidays at some dumb holiday house. I started reading the magazine article Selina was holding open. “We’re here!” Dad announced as he pulled onto the side of the road, in front of a big, big, big house. It looked two stories high and very expensive. “Holy crap.” Selina whispered to me. Selina wasn’t only my twin sister, but she was also my very best friend. She knew everything about me, and I knew everything about her. We’re identical, and some people have trouble telling us apart. But we don’t see any resemblance between us. Well of course we do, but we don’t think we look like identical twins. We both had the same face shape, same eyes and eyebrows, and the same mouth, nose and body shape. Our hair colour and eye colour were the exact same brown. It was pretty awesome being a twin, you could switch clothes all the time, always have your best friend there and someone to help with homework. So it is pretty cool, and I wouldn’t switch Selina for the world. “I know. It’s huge!” I whispered back. About six cars were already parked out the front of the house, and a few little kids that I recognised as the kids friends came running out. Holly, Xavier and Charlie jumped out of the car, running to their friends and automatically beginning to play with toys and dolls and balls and stuff. Selena and I hopped out slowly, sticking together. Dad’s mate Tom came outside, greeting dad by waving and saying hi, and kissing mum’s cheek. “Hello Selina and Hannah. I think I know whose who. You’re Selina. And you’re Hannah, right?” We nodded. “Finally! It’s taken me about six years!” He exclaimed. “Anyway, the rest of the teenagers are out the back. I know they’ve been waiting for you two.” “Cool.” We answered at the same time. Dad smirked. “Girls, get your bags out of the car and Tom will show you where you are staying.” Selena ran to the back of the car, lifting out my bag and passing it to me. She got her own and we followed Tom into the house. “Crap. This is huge.” Selina said in awe. Tom laughed. We were led down a long hallway with what seemed like millions of rooms. Tom took us into a room near the end. “This is your room. You’ll be sharing with two other boys. Nick and Jay. I think you’ll enjoy their company. They’re already outside. They’ve got this bunk, and you two have this bunk. So I’ll just leave you to it. You can go out the back when you’re settled in. And it really is great to see you two.” Tom directed. “Good to see you too.” We said again at the exact same time. Tom smiled, and left the room, closing the door softly. The room was big. Really big. A bunk bed with bags on it already had a pillow with the word ‘Danger’. I sat on Selina and my bunk bed. “We’re sharing a room with guys?” I questioned. “Apparently. That’s kind of creepy.” Selina replied, climbing to the top bunk. The room had a computer, TV, two huge wardrobes, a mirror and a cupboard that had a sign saying we could use anything at all in the storage. “Well. Do you want to go outside?” I asked. Selina and I had always been really shy. I knew she wouldn’t want to go outside, because I had a feeling like a heavy rock had been shoved into my stomach. “Not really.” She answered. I climbed up to the top bunk, sitting beside her. “I can’t believe we are here for the next four weeks. Sharing with two boys. We don’t even know who they are. They could be psycho knife-wielding murderers!” Selina yelped. “Relax, Sel. They can’t be that bad.” “Hannah! One of their pillows read ‘Danger’! What more of a sign do you want?” “Let’s not get carried away.” I giggled. “I’m telling you they are psycho knife-wielding murderers!” Selina yelled as someone opened the door.I did get a bit carried away with the twin bit... but I have a twin sister named Selina and we're best friends. Lol. I was describing our friendship. lol <3I wrote this in 15 minutes because I had to start homework. Grr. Anyway, she pulled the banana out froma a bag on the floor. Just saying. Anyway, can you guys check it out on my blog? It's longer cause you can only see a certain amount on Yahoo Answers. <3 more

Voting Question: richard simmons recipe for chocolate chocolate chip cookies?

Hello. I used to have a recipe years ago that I got out of a magazine. It was for chocolate cookies with chocolate chips by Richard Simmons. I remember at the time I was actually doing the deal-a-meal plan and it could have even been in a cookbook of his. I got to thinking of this recipe a while back and can't find it anywhere. If someone has it and would be willing to share it I would be so grateful! Thanks!!BTW, "Shell", I did use google and I still couldn't find the recipe. Hello, Do any of you know of any newsagents in Manchester or Liverpool where I might be able to buy French Vogue? Resolved Question: Where are some good websites where I can read articles in Spanish?

Hello, I am in a third year Spanish course in high school and I have developed a keen interest and greater appreciation for the language as I begin understand more and more of it. As part of a project separate form my schoolwork, I've been looking for a way to see how the language is used in the real world. Mostly, I desire to become a little more cultured in my understanding of the world and language (and also to have a leg up on my classmates.) I was wondering if any of the Yahoo! answers community can lead me to a website, preferably one of a news media outlet or magazine (think Time, BBC, Chicago Tribune etc. but in Spanish) where I can get some practice in by trying to read some of the opinion or science/technology articles (just because these 2 subjects interest me.) It would also be helpful if I had a means of translating these articles back into English just to see how I was doing. more

Resolved Question: Hey, I truly wanna know if there is a great performing arts high school in Chicago or in the suburban area?

Hello everyone, I live in Chicago, but i am willing to move into the suburbs because the area is much better. I think of myself as a total freak because i truly need performing arts in every school i go to. I have some performing arts in my school (Rowe-Clark Math and Science Academy) but they are always focused on rugby and other crazy meat headed sports. (no offense to the meat heads) I also want to pursue my dreams in acting and singing because i love it so much. Singing is the only thing that has made me feel like i have something worth living in this crap attack place with tons of stereo-types (all black guys should be in all of the sports programs within thier school *barfs!*). I think that joining a performing arts school would help me make better friends (people that understand that inspiration feeling when they hear a song or read a magazine about talented people reaching the heights for their dreams and following thier dreams no matter what!). I have tried to get into the Chiarts school, but it is new and doesn't accept sophomores (ackh*). Please help me you guys, cuz you random cyber strangers are my only hope! I don't wanna just go to school and get good grades, then go on to a good colleges and BLAH BLAH BLABLAH! I want my school life to be fun and filled with my most favorite things! Think of this,if no meat head would ever join a high school without sports programs, why can't I (Singing and acting freak of nature) have my performing arts high school. P.S. I am totally sure that i am not the only teenager stuck in a dead beat high school thinking the same exact thing. Performing arts freaks........err...i was gonna say unite but now i realize how geeky and dweeb central that is. =P more

hello all. I bought a new PS3 in January of 2010 and looked to find that it had the system update 3.01 installed. Now i am planning on buying new games soon at the end of the month i plan on getting COd4 MW1 or MW2 but eventually i am going to get newer games like darksiders or the New star Wars Force Unleashed Game coming out soon(already reserved it at Gamespot). I currently do not have access to High Speed internet in any form. No wifi, no satelite internet, no dsl, adsl, only internet i can get or that anyone around me has is Dial Up and that only goes as high as 28.8. So i cannot download the Ps3 Update from the internet as it would take too long(according to my connection 5 hours 26 minutes) Do i need to get a Ps3 system update to play the newer games or will it be on the game discs if it is needed. Also is the Playstation Magazine worth buying i am considering getting a subscription to it and have heard mixed reviews about the publications thanks more
