I recently got my school schedule for the upcoming year, and I see that I got into Music Foundations class. I thought "Great!" It should be really interesting. But then I saw that no one I knew was taking this class. And let me explain, because I am not one to drop a class because none of my friends are in there. I saw that many people I knew that are heading in the musical direction were taking Music Theory, which I decided to put off until next year. I'm considering majoring in Music Education, and I was wondering, which class would be more beneficial to me at this point? I'm going into my Junior year of high school, so that would mean putting one class off until my Senior year. I'm a member of the chorus, and would like move up and maybe get some solos for some songs that we sing. Is it pretty much a given that you should take Music Theory in order to do well in Chorus (or any other music group i.e bad or orchestra)? (My teacher already says that I have wonderful potential and I went level 5 for NYSSMA last year and it was my first time. I got a 96 scoring on it, so I wouldn't be relying on Music Theory alone to help me do well.) Is Music Foundations even worth taking? Someone help! I've got to weeks to change my schedule if I decide to.I will be taking both classes, but I wanted to know which class would be better for me to take this year. I want to move up in Chorus, but I think I'd enjoy taking Foundations this year. I cannot take both classes in the same year. more

Open Question: Musical theatre song for an operatic soprano?

I'll be taking part in a recital in February with my school's music honors society. I'm a 17-year-old high mezzo - my register change is lower than most, but I've consistently warmed up to an F#6. My director, voice teacher, and peers tell me that I have a "big operatic" voice. My plan for this recital was to sing "Mon coeur s'ouvre a ta voix" from "Samson et Delila" by Saint-Saens. There's a catch: my director has decided that vocalists will sing one operatic aria AND one musical theatre piece. I still plan to sing "Mon coeur," but I'd like to find a contrasting piece. I would normally flock to "How Could I Ever Know" or "Come To My Garden" from The Secret Garden, but our school is putting on The Secret Garden in spring, so I'm assuming it's off-limits. I was looking at "The Way You Feel" from The Light in the Piazza and "For A Song To Be Beautiful" from Nightingale. Any other suggestions?I've looked at Phantom, but I really want to shy away from it because, even though it's the least "rock-opera"-ish show by Andrew Lloyd Webber, it's something everybody tries to sing. more

What do you all think about having to transpose a song or songs in a musical? My high school is doing Pippin and I would LOVE to play Pippin, but I'm a baritone, and can sing to about an F. In "Corner of the Sky", Pippin sings a G. If I got cast as the role, do you think we could transpose it down a step, or would that not be acceptable??? I have PhotoScore where you can scan in music and transpose so it wouldn't be that tough. What do you think??? My cousin is trying out for a Broadway group that she has been in for a few years...this her last year since you can't be in high school...she really wants a good lead since it's her last year ...she usually get supporting roles, so she needs something to really show off. She has a good range, like G below middle C up to high B flat above the staff, but she is not a belter, her voice is still developing. I will be enrolling in a 2-Year College this fall after graduating from High School this past June. I just turned 19 and I've decided that I want to Minor in Music, specifically Choir. I love to sing, but I can't read music notes or play any instruments, except for the ukulele. I know a lot about chords though like Majors & Minor Chords. I have asked a similar question before but this time i am going to add more details and i am looking for musical works for a different reason. I do not have much experience with solo works for the clarinet so i can't give a standard as far as difficulty of the piece is concerned but i have been playing for about 2 years now and i am playing 1st chair in my High School's band this year. I am interested in musical works that are preferably in a minor key and are very flowing and smooth, not necessarily fast or slow, however. I am pretty comfortable in the altissimo register so range is not a problem either. I am not planning on performing these pieces, rather i would use these as a "fun" piece to play and to take a break from practicing the same songs over and over again from band.I forgot to add that the music does not have to be considered classical or be found in the classical period but it certainly can be considered classical and/or be found in the classical period.I didnt mean to make the question as confusing as i did. My range is about G3 to G5 and I was wondering if it was ok if I sang a song from a musical that was originally sung by a female. Most songs sung by males in musicals just don't fit my range. So there's a guy in my class (I had class with him last semester and we never talked) and taking classes again this summer to graduate this coming September. Me and him happened to be put into the same group for a group project. He was getting on my last nerves as I didn't think he was putting enough effort. On one of the parts me and the other member did most of it and made this guy do the last and easiest part. While I was explaining it to him, could have sworn he winked at me but didn't pay no nevermind to it. The next day I came to class and noticed he turned around a few times and in my direction. I had sat two rows behind him that day and the windows are behind me and thought that he could be just looking out the window. As a group of us left class and we made a few jokes. I noticed that he was walking a bit slower I guess to keep up with the group. As we all departed he asked me where I was headed and found out we were headed in the same exact direction. He started asking me questions about my job and how my father is doing (he's been ill for quite some time). As we got on the bus I walked towards the back and he sat in the front. Thought I was being a tad rude so I walked back to the front and spoke to him. He started telling me about his job situation and I gave him some advice. Now when I get on the train with him and noticed he didn't have an ipod I asked him about his musical choices and asked him if he wanted to listen to my favorite band when he told me no he didn't have his that day. From there my favorite song from my favorite band "Stocholm Syndrome" started playing. He's Swedish so he starts sharing weird facts like the guy whom Stockholm Syndrome was named after is from his hometown and went to the same high school as him, starts sharing details about himself and his family, and suggested bands and artwork I could be interested in after asking about my musical preferences and asking if I liked art and what type of art. I noticed while he was talking to me he moved and turned more in my direction and his pupils were slightly dilated (I've heard that's a sign a guy could be into you and though I'm not sure about that, I do know that your pupils dilate if you're trying to pay attention to something). I texted him a few times this weekend in regards to our group project, he couldn't check over my parts so he texted back saying "I'm playing a game in philly and don't have access to the internet." I though "Can't check it now" might suffice. I saw him today and it looked like he tried pointing his head towards me a few times (I sat two row behind him again but this time directly behind him). When I got up I was discussing the project with the other member and he just stood next to me like he was waiting and got pretty close to me instead of walking to another other direction. I turned around after I finished conversing with my other group member and asked him about his game. He told me about the game, what they did, and how tired and sick he was from yesterday. He asked me how my weekend was and I told him I was feeling sick. He asked me what was wrong and when I told him he seemed concerned "Sounds serious, you should really get that checked out. Sadly we didn't travel together today since he had to take care of a few things at school. Does it sound like this guy might be into me? I think he's growing on me and I'd like to know since this is the first guy I've liked in a REALLY LONG time (so I need the advice since its been that long). more

Resolved Question: Help with my auditions?

I'm a sophomore at my high school and I really want to try to get into our school production of Hairspray. And the competition is FIERCE. >.<" We have to do a 30 second singing audition, preferably a Disney song and after that a dance audition (where we also describe anything we've done or good at: tap, opera, etc.) Then, if you've gotten that far you must do a callback song, that's usually from the musical we're doing. I'm pretty sure I'll be doing "I Won't Say (I'm in Love)" from Hercules. I'm not a superb singer, but I'm decent. Is there anyway I can improve my singing, or project my voice? I know I've previously posted this, but the answer-er didn't understand that it was for MUSICAL theatre, and told me to redo it without the singing/dancing experience. I'm a sophmore in high school auditioning for my school's production of Chicago and I would like to get a role this year instead of being in the dance crew, but roles usually go to juniors and seniors. My voice teacher and I talked about songs but we are pretty stuck on finding one within the same style that will show off my voice! My range is comfortably E3 to C6 however i can hit E6. I'm looking for a more contemporary musical theatre piece that will show off my range and hopefully get me a role! over the last year or so glee has risen to the status of phenomenon, thanks to its `fun` nature and `catchy tunes`.I myself fail to see why anyone likes this show. Firstly, all I can see is that they are stealing many classics and pissing all over them.Imagine is a good example.It is perhaps one of the most uplifting and memorable songs of all time. When I heard the cast singing it, I felt as if they were sucking every bit of inspiration and humanity out of it-just because they have nice voices doesnt make it any better.Theyre making millions off of larceny and laziness~why not write your own songs once in a while?I know its not possible every week, but try show some talent and workrate once in a while? Secondly,why do people say that it is a reflection on school life?Its a shallow examination of topical issues.Its simple,exploitative `drama` that does not deal with issues such as bullying ,teenage pregnancy etc. well.Just because it discuss` them doesnt mean it deals with them properly. Thirdly its characters are cardboard cut outs who are very poorly developed eg. token black girl; villainous,pantomine wife; dorky,unconfident girl{who is incredibely grating and unlikable];nefarious,irratating,unfunny,crass,overrated,abhorable coach{"you think thats hard,try living with hepatitis"~how is that funny?},played by the unversatile Jane Lynch;typically flamboyant,jokey gay guy~it never ends. Lastly, when I first saw the promos for this, I thought it was just a mutant spawn of a synthetic cashcow like High School Musical.I was .Just because it has adult content and is tailered spcifically for older teens doesnt mean that it isnt dumb,cancerous{atouch melodramatic but its true~it will ruin both tv and music},unimaginitive crap. more

Okay, so now is my chance! At school, we're thinking about what play and musical drama club wants to do this year and everyone has the opportunity to put out ideas for a play or musical. Well, I have some tricks up my sleeve. I've been a singer for 10 years. I've competed throughout the years, been in plays, shows, showcases, musical, mini gigs, and pretty much everything and anything. I was just wondering how to get started in the music business as a singer? Am I supposed to get a manager or what? I have been trained classical but would like to change to pop. I was wondering if people could give me opinions/pointers/suggestions for songs... any kind of feedback or constructive criticism if I should work on anything.... Here are some samples. I'm auditioning for my school's drama club and I need a really easy song to sing. Something easy to learn and nothing from Wicked they told us not to. It has to be from am musical. Also, my vocal range is VERY limited. I sang You Can't Stop the Beat from Hairspray last year so I can't sing that again. I really don't know very many musical songs and I can't really learn lyrics that fast unless they are really catchy. My voice is slightly nasally when I sing. I'm a 13 year old girl and my audition is in 2 weeks. I sound really good singing Lean on Me by Bill Withers so if you can think of anything similar to that, that would be good. I have a somewhat high voice but I can't hit high notes, it just sounds high. I think I'm a soprano but I don't know for sure. The musical they are doing is either Seussical or Honk Jr, so we can't sing anything from either of those. more
