Improving Listening Skills Questions asked

Open Question: Learning languages: Is this a good language learning plan? Should I add anything or do more of anything?

I'm off to Spain in around 4 months and want to get a head start in the language as much as possible. I am taking a beginners class but would like to do my own revision everyday (around 3 or 4 hours). I have done this before while learning German and found it extremely helpful although with my German I was already accustomed to the language, so just concentrated on grammar and vocab. Spanish is more beginners! I have made up a revision scheduele for Spanish and would like your opinion...am I missing anything out? Is any of it useless? Or should I be doing more of something? Per 3 or 4 hour session... 1. Revise all grammar 2. Study one new grammar topic 3. Revise all vocab 4. Watch a video in Spanish WITH subtitles to improve listening skills and take down vocab. 5. Watch same video in Spanish WITHOUT subtitles so I am concentrating only on the words, not the writing underneath 6. Read an article in Spanish, take down vocab. Re-read until understood. 7. Topic - phrases, questions and vocab (for example personal information, clothes, food, household applicances, daily routine etc) Anything missing? Anything I need to concentrate more on? Thanks in advance! more

Resolved Question: How to improve my Spanish?

Hey, I speak 2 languages fluently, and Spanish is going to be my third. I've learned the basics of Spanish such as counting to a trillion, regular verbs, irregular verbs, gustar y interesar. I also learned about (el, la, los, las). The colors, and some other basics. Now I've finished the course and I got nothing to do anymore, and I'm planning to become fluent in Spanish in the next two years. So what should I do? Go to a website and learn? or read books? or watch movies? I mean I got the basics now from the course but I want more! Any help or ideas would be appreciated. Thanks more

Open Question: What is the best combination of subtitles/audio to use to learn a language (Spanish)?

I'm trying to watch a few movies in Spanish because my listening skills are not very good, but I was wondering what would best improve my Spanish. Spanish audio + English subtitles Spanish audio + Spanish subtitles English audio + Spanish subtitles What do you all think? Thanks :D more

Open Question: My ex wife frustrates me....but not in the, ways most ex wives frustrate their spouses?

My wife and I divorced in February after 17 years together. We have two kids under 11. I feel like she had a midlife crisis. I could only get her to go to 3 couples therapy sessions before the divorce. She went to a year of individual therapy, though. She told me she no longer loves me, doesn't find me attractive and whatever causes a wife to stay committed to a husband had been severed and she couldn't get it back. She also claimed I wasn't a good listener. I went to a therapist and tried to improve my listening skills. I continue to try to get her to work on our relationship because I don't feel like we tried everything we could. We share custody of the kids and see eachother 2 or 3 times a week at drop offs or kids events. She has invited me over for dinner a couple of times. I told her I loved her and missed her and she started crying. I called her the other night to talk about kids stuff and ask how she is doing. Once again I told her I loved her and really want to fix things. I started crying and Hung up. She called me the next morning and said she could hear the pain in my voice and couldn't sleep all night thinking about it and us. But here's the thing...she cries and will make vague references to that I don't listen or I don't understand her...or that she doesn't want to be divorced going into her mid 40's...but she won't take action and go to therapy to try to fix anything. The only action she has taken is moving out and getting the divorce. Maybe that alone tells me what I need to know. But, this is a 17 year relationship with kids involved. It seems like if this is a matter of me not listening, then we should work on it and fix it. I just don't understand what that means to her and she won't clarify. I invited her over to grill out and told her I had everything except tomatoes so if she could bring those....and she said those tomatoes come at a high cost. I asked what she meant and she shook her head.I told her again today that I loved her and as she closed her garage door, I saw her lean up against the wall crying. On the day of our divorce, we kissed before going into the court. After the divorce, she said we both had the rest of the day free and that we could go to lunch and go shopping together, but that she would likely have feelings for me and second guess her decision to divorce me. We went to Easter mass together. I continue to invite her to nearly everything I do or plan...especially with the kids. She usually declines. This woman is not the woman ive known for 16 years. I want to turn this around for my kids and my family. She has a great job. She and I make comparable salaries. She is really into her job, new friends and new hobbies. more

Open Question: Do I need to steal guitar licks to improve improvisation/soloing skills or just practice with backing tracks?

Resolved Question: How can I get a 4.0 gpa freshmen year high school?

I was in an AP math class beginning of 8th grade year, (this year) but then I missed 6 months of school. I got moved out of AP (the reason I missed 6 months was because I got very sick, and during 4 months I was too sick to study/learn so I missed 4 months of learning; the remaining 2 months I was with my tutor from the school district trying to catch me up) Im going into 9th grade next year, and I HAVE to get a 4.0 gpa that year. I am taking all the regular classes; nothing below average but nothing above average. I want to take 3 AP classes sophomore year, (History, Math, Science) and I have to get recommendation from my 9th grade teachers. Here is what I already know what I need to do; study until I know the material, do all homework and turn in on time, redo the homework just for myself if i miss a lot (which I normally dont), do all EX credit, dont be late or absent, and participate/listen in class. Oh, and take good notes. Am I missing anything? Also, on top of my 4 core classes(for PE instead of taking PE I'm playing on the basketball team) I am also taking a foreign language at school (Chinese) and then I am taking Japanese outside of school. I am also going to do ASB, anime club, and 25 hours of community of service a month. (Community service isnt required at my high school btw) Do you guys have any tips on getting a 4.0 gpa along with these after school activities? Please dont tell me to just do my best or something because I really want/need a 4.0 gpa. Also any tips on time management would be awesome!!!! Thank you!!! more

Voting Question: Help this man with aspergers improve the quality of his life?

Ok im 17 & i have no friends, no work, and no drivers license Basically the only memories i have from High School are bad ones I have one person to talk to & that is my Best friend who also has aspergers. Lets just call him swim. Because I have almost no social skills, I can't relate to anyone it seems. I've been so mindfuucked by only hanging out with one dude that guys who I think are my friend end up teasing me because I'm so socially awkward, even girls roll their eyes at me and have the wtf is this guy doing here additude. NEXT IS MY APPEARANCE I'm quite thin and have a bit of a beer gut, even tho I switched schools in grade 11 now I'm grade 12 at a new school and ppl still treat me like a special needsey person because my voice sounds so odd. I hate my face, it used to be atleast decent now my chin is crooked to one side, one cheekbone is larger thn the other and whenever I talk, I see tone of wrinkles temporarily form around my mouth. I hate it because most aspies are the silent handsome stranger type. I hate my appearance WHAT SUCKS is people my age have their license & are working, volunteering& hanging out with their friends 24/7 & they also have a girlfriend, they have people to Text or Call & they have people who actually want to do stuff with them, while i have none of that......& its not like i want what others have because that's not the case AT ALL.....its just that it sucks to have a life & not be able to experience it. Basically all i do all day is stay at home 24/7, go on the internet, play video games, watch T.V., watch movies & listen to music. I go outside of the house 2 or 3 times a month & thats it. I don't know how to talk to people anymore.......i guess because i've been alone for like 4 years. Im at my ENDS right now. more

Resolved Question: Do you think he cheated on me?

Last year me and my now ex boyfriend had a lot of problems. I had a gut feeling for a long time (which i couldn't get rid of) that he was cheating, but I had no hard evidence. Some examples of what he done are: -Ignored and even cancelled my calls. -On one occasion I couldn't get contact with him for a few days. -He would start arguments with me over everything. -He would make heartless/insensitive comments. -He became protective with one of his phones (it never left his pocket and the keypad tone was activated). -I would listen to his problems, but as soon as I wanted to talk he would shut down the conversation or switch off. -We hardly had sex, he hardly hugged or kissed me. -On the odd occasion we did have sex his foreplay skills had improved a lot. -When we went on holiday his actions made me feel that he didn't want me to be there. Another thing people found odd about our relationship was the fact that we were together for over 3 years and I never met a single relative, friend or anyone that knew him. I know he doesn't have a good relationship with his mum, but I don't know if it was a good enough excuse. Looking back now I realise I put up with a lot of stuff I shouldn't have. But as they say love makes you blind. Do you think the things he did mean he cheated or do you think there could have been another reason? p.s when we nearly broke up before he did tell me "he thought about cheating and he could of cheated, but he didn't think it would be fair on me" :( till this day I don't know why he said that. more

Resolved Question: What should I do to improve my skills in playing violin?

Two years ago, I started playing violin. I was enrolled in a school for two sessions but then I had to go because of high school studies. During my stay, I had learned the basics, like holding the violin and bow, and sight reading, stacatto, slurring, etc. through my teacher, with the aid of Suzuki Book 1 and 2 and Wohlfahrt. In my high school, I had a music teacher who improved my tonality, taught me vibrato, and let me play in front of the crowd. Just recently, I was enrolled in a music school better than my previous school. My teacher was absolutely more skilled than my former teachers, considering that he is a graduate of a reputable university, and is a member of an orchestra in our country. I was really happy for I expect that I would learn more skills but to my disappointment, he said that most of what I have learned is wrong! Now, I am going back to the basics again -- proper bow hold(my pinky was really stiff then), violin placement, bowing, timing, etc. It is okay for me if it is for the better, but it seems that I am having trouble with my bowing. It is okay and straight when I am doing it on only one string, but when I am already playing the music that I was playing before, my bow is going everywhere! I just can't seem to balance my bow! My right hand is not really flexible, and sometimes I can't play it to the tip of the bow. But when I do, my bow is either not straight or bouncing. It seems that my pressure isn't exerted in proper places. I can't also play for an hour without resting, because my back and my shoulders hurt so much. I think I am not really relaxed. My vibrato is wrong too. I have read that it is really hard to correct it. Is that true? What could I do to make it right? I am not doing vibrato anymore, and I am hoping that I would learn to do it correctly. Is it still possible? I am also wondering about the proper placing of my thumb. Should it be on the fulcrum, or on the stick? I am going to class tomorrow and I want it to be fixed somehow so that my playing would be improved, and that my teacher would not have to bother about it anymore. Because of these problems, I am starting to lose hope and interest. For a day, I tend to play an hour less than before. I have no more inspiration for playing, and there are a lot of times that I am only taking it for granted. I know I cannot learn this way, as Einstein had said, "Love is a better teacher than duty." How can I love playing again? I am really getting tired of playing scales over and over. I really want to play classical music and join an orchestra someday, but as I can see, I am really far from it. Any inspiring and motivational words, please? Every time I see my violin, I feel really sad and disappointed. I really want to master this instrument. Please help! more
