Below is my first paragraph, or part of it, which I'm having trouble discerning what exactly my thesis statement is. Please, could someone identify it for me? In Joyce Carol Oates’ story “Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been?” the reader is introduced to a 15 year old girl named Connie, who throughout the story remains flat as opposed to round as a character trait. Throughout the story we are shown Connie’s relationship with her family, particularly her mother with which she does not get along. As the story progresses we see that Connie acts differently around her friends than she does when she is under the watchful eye of her mother. And although Connie does behave differently depending on whose company she is in, she does not change as a character. Ultimately Connie is confronted by the awkwardly twisted character Arnold Friend, and in her confrontation with him we see that although Connie may handle herself differently, she is presented with circumstances which are universal to a human being in her situation. more

For school I had to read the short story "Where Are You Going? Where Have You Been?" by Joyce Carol Oates. The first time I read it I was disturbed by Arnold Friend, but now that I'm analyzing the text I'm freaking TERRIFIED of him. I'm seriously convinced he's like, behind me right now lmao. I knew when I read it that he was a reflection of Satan, but now I can see that the similarities are uncanny. His name (Arnold Friend = An Old Fiend), his sneaky temptation and most of all his feet. Satan is depicted as having cloven feet, and Arnold's stance certainly indicates that he may have such feet under his stuffed boots. The highly ironic thing is that I'm an atheist... I don't believe in Satan. But my GOD this man is SCARY AS HELL!OMG BIG BROTHER! I read "1984" in 8th grade and was scarred. I'm glad I read it then, though, because it really helped shape me as an individual. It just kind of developed me into a bit of a freak in my high school lol. I think we need more short stories mentioned in B&A (and less Twilight), so I’m going to start a series of questions revolving around them. For those that haven’t read this short story by Joyce Carol Oates, it’s well worth reading. The suspense toward the end is almost tangible, and I highly recommend it. There are multiple interpretations of the story. For example, my professor reads it as realistic events—a real 30 year old man stalking a fifteen year old girl. –I- read it as a supernatural story with religious elements, and can see a connection between Milton’s Eve and Connie, and Milton's Serpent and Arnold Friendly. There are other views, as well. MY QUESTION: How did –you- read it? And did you enjoy it?LOL, C_bar! And great answer. I didn't know there was a movie, but I did know it was based on real events. Im not much of a reader but i do enjoy reading from time to time if I can find things that are actually interesting to me. The primary reasons that i dont, are because i have trouble finding shorter books or stories about the type of subject i like to read about. It sounds bad, but i have ADD and a have a verry short attention span so thats why i perfer short stories over novels. I tend to loose interest in longer books, and end up concentrating on finishing the book rather then taking the time to enjoy it. Again, i enjoy reading and dont want to completely stop just because i loose intrerest and feel obligated to finish a long book. would anyone be able so suggest any short stories or mid sized books that go allong the lines of..... 1.Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been? - by Joyce Carol Oates 2. if so, can you help me out? we have sirius satellite radio at work. they have it on the starlite channel. there is a song that plays on there occasionally that i would like to find. it's kind of got a catchy beat to it. i usually am not in a spot that i can hear all of the words, but have heard some of them. it's kind of got a disco-ish beat to it or something. they have sampled part of Hall & Oates "I Can't Go For That" lyrics in the song. It's a guy that sings it, but there is one part that a lady sings. midway through the song the ladies part goes something like this: "ready, willing, overtime, Where does it stop, where do you dare me to draw the line. You've got the body, now you want my soul, Don't even think about it, say no go" the rest of the song is sung by a guy and the only thing i can really understand him saying is something like, "be mine, mine forever. On 11/19/07, there was a rerun of House on Fox where the hospital gets a new chief and the chief comes into House's office while he's playing air guitar to a song that I just cannot place! Sounds like Hall & Oates or ZZ Top or Sting or at least something from that era. I tried IMDB to look it up, but the information from Tivo didn't match any of the episodes (Tivo info said it's original air date was 11-16-04); episode was lady entrepreneur who was taking ipecac syrup for bulimia to control her weight and needed a heart transplant.
