Open Question: Christians/Creationists- where in Genesis does it say that God created the universe supernaturally?

I believe in God but I believe that God created our universe with reality. In Genesis I can't find the word 'supernatural' or anything remotely like it. However, there is genuine insight in the Bible. The imagination of Man is a powerful thing. When it says that God created 'Adam' (ancient Hebrew for 'Man') from the 'dust of the earth' that is actually scientifically accurate. In fact, all organisms started out originally as organic dust or clay-like compounds from the earth that evolved over time. In Genesis it goes on describing God creating the universe and everything in it but no mention of 'how' God did these things. Well, in a way Genesis in a sense, would be repeating itself. It already described the process with the 'dust' metaphor. Carl Sagan used to say that ultimately "we are all stardust". That's us, all other organisms and the planets were created from dust-like star debris. The stars in turn, are created from dust-like debris in nebulas. This is not a theory. These are facts. Just google 'nebulas- photos' then read. Also, the fact that Carl Sagan was an Atheist and many other scientists are Atheists is entirely irrelevant. That is their business. Morality has nothing whatsoever to do with the universe. I believe that God created what we call reality, a machine that is powered by physics (speaking metaphorically) and it in turn, created both the physical and nonphysical universes. Our physical universe created the stars which formed planets and this particular planet formed us. We arose from its dust. It is not wrong to agree with an Atheist on 'how' the universe was physically created. 'Why' the universe was created, is the issue. As far as the 'seven days' terminology, remember the times in which the Bible was written and what kind of people were reading it, then think of it in these terms: inspired by your belief in one all-encompassing God, you are describing how you believe that God created the universe to people living thousands of years ago, most of whom cannot read, write and science was in its infancy. How do you relate the process? Aren't you going to use metaphor after metaphor after metaphor? When the Bible says that God created this or that, there is no need to take this to mean that God directly, without nature involved, created something by 'hand' (another metaphor). We sin when we disobey God. We do something wrong that we know is wrong but we do it anyway because we are imperfect. We become angry or greedy or frustrated. This is real sin. This is actual sin. However, the consequences of sin can easily be described metaphorically as well. Back to primitive Man and the Bible when it was first written and compiled- here we have sin used as a metaphor. When we sin it often has tragic and destructive consequences. It is 'like' when nature causes storms, earthquakes and floods. These natural processes have 'literally' nothing to do with sin anymore than a gentle breeze, a light snow or rain have anything to do literally with sin. That's just amoral nature and our amoral universe functioning in real life. Morality only applies to human beings. Where I part company is with Atheists who believe that God is a metaphor as well. Whereas I believe that God is real and the rest is metaphor. more

Well there is this hot guy who works at the place where I get my coffee (he makes the coffee). At the beginning there was this instant noticing of each other as I would walk past and then I decided to order coffee from him one day... There was the starring in the eyes a little more longer than usual as I gave him my order. And as he would hand over my latte there was this pause and glaze of the eyes. He looked at me in a way where he made me feel very beautiful.*Can't describe it.* I hadn't seen him for a while after that and thought he had left the job and then one mourning I saw him and I thought to myself this time I'm going to start the conversation so I told him how good his coffee is and what coffee he uses lol "We make our own blend... what do you think about it? Do you think its too strong or too weak?" I reply "Its perfect, just in between and I'm fussy with my coffee too". "Oh good" he smiled as I smiled back. He was soooo cute!! He got all lost for words; "That was to have here? Ah yeah (nervous laugh)" and Me; "um no take away", him stumbling his words; "haha um err yeah take away I mean" and laughs as I smile at his cuteness! In 2 minutes he told me he was going away in 6 weeks backpacking around Europe which included Rome, Paris etc!!! I asked him if he has family in Europe he could stay with... He told me he has family in North Italy and he even told me his age "You know being 24 years old, bla bla" He quietly told me ill stamp a few more on your coffee card so that I can get a free coffee next time (he stamped it like 5 times, not just one extra stamp!) aw He seemed to give me a lot of information about himself. Now I won't see him for a whole week cause I'm going away! =( Then I will only have 5 weeks till he leaves!!! Open Question: What do you think of my first chapter?

This is my first chapter from my novel, Not-So-Secret Runaways, sort of a child-book suited better for ten to twenty year olds, but anyone can read it. Please don't critisize, but feel free to tell me if its good or if anything's bad. I know its a bit long (five pages) but read as much as you can and please tell me what you think!!! Here it goes: Okay, so, I wasn’t the one of thinking of running away. Technically, it was the evil mastermind I call my brain. It wasn’t exactly how I’d run away, but why. Every night, I had to lay out tomorrow’s clothes, change into pajamas and tell Cody that there was no monster underneath his bed. Then I could finally crawl over to my bed, only to wake up again to the same thing. Another thing was my name. I’m not exactly the commercial type of girl, but I don’t panic about pimples that haven’t happened yet, either. My hair is dark brown nearly to my elbows, and my piercing gray eyes look impossible against my pale skin-which basically made me avoid looking people in the eye most of the time. Most girls’ names I know are Tiffany or Lila or something normal-but no, I had to be named December. Mom always said it was a pretty name, since I was born in December and all. I guess it would be, if we lived on Planet Name-a-Month. And yet another thing about running away was my siblings. Cody’s the youngest; he’s only four, but he can dream up a lot of things already. There’s me, December Taylor-I’m only twelve-and Luke, who’s sixteen. I’m stuck in the middle. I had anything and everything planned out. I had packed up everything, I had picked my partners, but the thing was, I didn’t know where to run away to. This was California. Not as exciting as New York, but loud enough. Our condo was dangerously near Hollywood, in Los Angeles. One step out the door and some mob of girls might think you’re Zac Efron. But that’s where I planned to go. In Hollywood, you could put on a pair of sunglasses and walk around telling everyone you were a commercial hit star and everyone’d believe you. In Mellow Park Middle School, it was like every single student was rich and some child of a superstar. If they weren’t, they’d claim they were. We had a Hannah Montana sister here every other day. Okay. I know what you’re thinking. Running away, how irresponsible, blah, blah. Well, think what you want, but you’ve never seen my family bickers and arguments and things Luke did to Cody and Cody did to me. The plan started when mom told me about some tutoring class that’ll start next week she signed me up for. So, I thought it was time to start the plan and tell my partner. You had to pick carefully. Not someone who complained, but someone who were useful with things. Not someone who was lazy, but someone who liked to help. Not someone who was too loud, but someone who could keep a secret. And so that was why I picked Claudia Wellman. She was always quiet and had a book in front of her face, but in Physical Education, you would never guess she was ever quiet. If you’ve never seen Claudia run into P.E., you’ve never been truly frightened. She always had a crooked smile, more crooked than mine. She had hair the color of ravens that curled up when it touched her shoulder. We always shared side comments on things, like the class’s activities, but we were never truly close. We had too many differences on that part. Claudia was always quiet, I was outgoing. The only things we both had in common were we both loved to write and draw and we were on strike against math. And we both agreed boys were idiots. I knew Claudia had a hard life. Her parents were divorced and she had to live with one parent each month. She was only living here in Hollywood Square because her mom got a job as a receptionist at the Square Hotel, and she had three older brothers, all who basically ignored her. I had given the idea of running away a lot of thought. If I did run away, all my problems of home would be solved, but surely new problems would also come up, too. I could visit home from time to time, get some money or food and all-but right now, I wanted to be free of a boring life’s curse. I figured I could give it a shot. At lunch, while Claudia buried herself with Moby Dick, I picked up my lunch tray, took a deep breath, and sat down next to her. “Oh, hi, December,” she said, putting her book down, flashing her crooked smile. “Hey, Claudia,” I said, picking at my hamburger. “So, how’s life?” She sighed. “You know, the usual. Mom arguing, dad moving, brothers being stupid…things are going normal, basically.” We laughed, and then an awkward silence took hold. “Don’t you ever think of running away?” Claudia didn’t seem surprised. Part 1 the encounter Shadow…fire!...HELP! HELP ME!...darkness…cold… I awake to the sound of flapping wings on a breeze. My eyes flutter open to reveal that the window’s unlatched, the curtains are billowing, rustling in the cool night wind. I look around my room, wishing it didn’t have to be so ordinary. The light, sky blue walls, the big windows, and crowded closet. The only thing that’s probably different is the stack of books all along my bedside. I check the time, the clock read 1:00AM. One last dazed scan around the room and…There in the corner! ...Something, or…or someone’s standing in the shadows…I blink and it’s gone. I get up to close the window, but see it already is. “How strange, I must’ve still been asleep” I lay back in bed and stare at the ceiling, watching the little stick-on, glow in the dark stars go out. Somewhere in the middle of watching them I must’ve fallen asleep, because I didn’t wake ‘till morning. “Sil! Get up or you’ll be late to school, again!” “Aaahhrr” I groan into my pillow and roll over onto the floor! “Ow!” I rub the sleep from my eyes and then get up to get dressed. When I get to the bathroom to fix my hair, I see something strange on the side of my neck. I lean in to take a closer look. To the untrained eye it would look like two tiny, insignificant, week old, mosquito bites. At that moment no matter how well read I was, I still didn’t give it a serious thought. Then a half remembered, blurry dream came flashing before my eyes. It wasn’t more than a mere shadow moving from a dark corner with more speed than I could’ve followed, but what I could see were two long white fangs, tipped and dripping with red, and glinting with a wicked light. With a tiny shake of my head I laugh out loud at myself, “of course it’s a dream, and no wonder after reading so much of that weird book before bed.” Letting it slide, I run back to my room and grab a hat deciding that, even trying to fix my hair would be suicide. Heading down the stairs, I hear my little brothers Velvel, and Faolan arguing. (Just a little bit of info, Velvel and Faolan both mean wolf.) After a few seconds I deduce that they’re either arguing over a toy, or who hit whom. Coming into the kitchen, I grab a Pop-tart and a glass of milk, listening to my mom say, “ There you are, I was starting to think I’d have to drag you out of bed.” After about one bite of Pop-tart, the doorbell rings, meaning that either I’m just in time, or about to be supremely late for the bus. Running to the door, the bell rings again, followed by a lot of loud, hurried knocking. “Cheeze! Angel, relax I’m coming!” I say as I open the door. Opening the door, I see a scowling face under a mass of tussled, curly blond hair. Giving up the scowl, she says “Hurry up Ash or we’ll miss the bus, AGAIN!” “Okay, okay I’m coming.” Angel’s real name is Midnight A. Woods. She’s my neighbor, and during the summer, when I opened the door to meet her for the first time, the sun shined through her hair, giving her the silhouette of an Angel. Which I find funny because that’s her middle name, Angel. That’s also how I got to be called by MY middle name. I mean, if she gets to be called by her middle name, wouldn’t it be only fair if she got to call me by mine too? As we hurry to the bus stop, I check the time on my cell phone and know we missed it. Once we’re there, Angel starts grumbling “I knew we missed it, I just knew it! It’s your fault you know!” she says while swiveling to point an accusing finger at me. “Oh come on Ang, I’m sure we didn’t miss it. It’s probably just late is all…” I mumble, knowing it was a pretty lame excuse. Then out of the corner of my eye I see a… something moving in the shadows. Turning to look, I see it’s a person. A brilliant idea struck me, almost as of it was whispered into my ear, one so simple I thought I was stupid for not thinking of it before. “Hey! Excuse me! Did the bus come by here?!” I call to the stranger, acting on my brilliant-later I found out it was only HALF thought out- plan. The stranger steps out of the shadows and I see that it’s a man. As he approaches I can make out more detail. He’s wearing faded out blue jeans, a white shirt and a dark leather jacket, that looks a lot like the one I was wearing. Except mine made me look like a biker chic, his made him look like a bad boy, and a dangerous one too. He had light brown hair that changed in the light, waving like the ocean or an untamed fire, and he approached until he was about two feet from us, then I could see that his eyes changed color too, just like mine. Open Question: Christians, are you saying that our world started out as basically Heaven then?

Everything was perfect. No pain or death. The earth was not made from molten rock that cools off on the surface as planets are today. There were no volcanoes to occasionally bubble up and create more land though. There were no earthquakes. The earth's plates always moved without rubbing up against one another. Of course, that would mean there were no mountains either, since this is how mountains are formed. The earth though round, did not have extreme cold at the poles or hot along the equator somehow. The earth would rotate, creating night and day and some wind but no storms. No beautiful lightning to observe at a safe distance on a warm Summer night. No beautiful snow or that nip of pain from the cold. Adam and Eve though naked, never stepped on a thorn or if they did, it didn't hurt. Then God tested Adam and Eve. He told them not to eat the fruit of a certain tree or they would become mortal. They disobeyed. They sinned and the entire universe changed. Is that accurate? Why can't I believe in God along with the reality right in front of my face at the same time instead? Don't you get it? This is and always was a physical and natural universe. It's Heaven that is the nonphysical universe. Why is it so absolutely essential that the Bible be the literal word of God? Can't it be right about there being a God and Heaven but it just got the logistics wrong? Remember when the Bible was written. Are there not out-dated cultural and chauvinistic references peculiar to the times in which the Bible was written? When the Bible uses terms like 'four corners of the earth' and 'stars falling from the sky' isn't it speaking metaphorically then? When the Bible says that people cannot understand certain mysteries of the natural world, human nature and the cosmos, shouldn't you keep in mind that that was then but this is now? We actually do have a better understanding of those things now. We actually do.You can see stars in the process of forming and creating planets with the hubble and other telescopes. Open Question: Could you please tell me what these dream pieces mean? Snow bunny and fawn?

Thanks in advance for any help / insight you can give me about this dream. I appreciate it. I can't remember too much about my dream, but I do remember that I was in my home in the dining room (which has a sliding glass door that leads outside). Outside it was night but, oddly enough, I remember that it was a lovely sort of night. It wasn't a typical night sky, but more like, the stars were colored, like a nebula or something, and there were a huge array of colored stars, not simply the white stars, with one or two red or blue ones. Reds, blues, greens, yellows, oranges, pinks, violets, purple, etc. I'm not too sure from where, but it's then that I noticed a rabbit in the house. A fluffy white rabbit. I knelt down and let it come to me (which it did quite friendly-like) and that's when I realized it was made purely out of snow. I don't remember it feeling cold (warm actually). The scene changed. I don't remember how, but I was next looking outside to the back yard (through the sliding glass door my home in real life has), standing in the doorway. It was still night (and throughout it I wasn't afraid one bit of the dark, even though in the real world I am quite scared of being in the dark). Outside I noticed a fawn walking about. It came up to me and I happily greeted it and petted it. The odd thing was... it was made out of snow too, like the rabbit. It wasn't cold or unpleasant. Actually seemed more like it was fur-soft than anything else, but, regardless, it was made of snow. The scene changed. I was still in the dining room and was standing, but then knelt down as another rabbit (not the same as the first) hopped over to me and I began petting it. It, too, was made out of snow like the first one. All white and fluffy, soft too, but made purely out of snow. After a bit, it changed. I was still a fawn, but now it was a real one. Nothing else changed but that and I remember thinking 'Oh! Well, isn't this nice? ^_^' Pleasantly surprised (sort of like if you're expecting rain and clouds to greet you, but the moment you step outside you're, instead, greeted with sunshine and warmth. What about all the movies that show that women are far superior fighters than men? 1) The Tombraider movies. Angelina Jolie has superhuman agilty and jumping powers and never misses here targets she's shooting at. 2) The Resident Evil movies. Mila Jovovoich is TOTALLY superhuman. Not only does she jump over 10 feet in the air, but in Resident Evil Apocalypse she took down Nemesis all by herself and that monster was as big and strong as a grizzly bear. 3) Trinity in the Matrix movies. Remember in the beginning of the movie when she jumps off her motorcycle and lands on hard pavement from over 50 feet in the air without hurting herself and then taking out all the male security guards EASILY? 4) In the 2007 movie "Live Free of Die Hard", Mai Linh played by Maggie Q is able to withstand John McClain's full force punches to the face, able to withstand getting run down by an SUV driven by him at over 50 mph in a building through walls and broken glass, and still is able to kick as#, and only dies by falling down an elevator shaft. 5) That cartoon woman in the E-surance commercials a few years back where she and a male cartoon character were in a football game with giant mechanical robots and it was only the woman that was able to take down the giant robots and disassemble them whereas the male cartoon could not. 6) In a dishnetwork commercial in a Western saloon fighting scene, all a woman had to do to take down two men at the same time was punch each one in the face with one of her fists. 7) In the movie "Crank 2 High Voltage", the girlfriend of the main star took down a full grown man(played by grown up actor Corey Haim), easily and threw him on a car like she was as strong as Hulk Hogan, and was crippled by her in mere seconds lying on the hood of the car helpless! 8) In the cartoon "Planet Hulk" (which JUST came out on RedBox), I saw it, and the female character in there was equally as powerful as Hulk. If Hulk wasn't able to heal himself from her punches to his chest which caused him to bleed, she would've beat him. She could not heal herself, he could, yet it was STILL a 50/50 fight. So all women obviously have superpowers over men and are far superior in fighting ability over all men, and this was especially proven when that mortal woman fought Hulk in "Planet Hulk" who was able to withstand Hulk's full force blows by the way, and Mila Jovovoich fighting and beating Nemesis in Resident Evil Apocalypse PROVED THIS! Open Question: I am planning for a tour package to Turkey. Please advise which is better - SA Tours or Dynasty Travel?

I am planning for a tour to Turkey in mid May 2010. Is it a good month to go Turkey? I checked the 10D Turkey tour packages from different agencies and the itineraries offered are more or less the same. However, their prices do differ - SA Tours and Five Stars Travel are the cheapest, followed by Dynasty Travel, then Chan Brothers. I am thinking of going for SA Tours since it is about S$200 cheaper than Dynasty Travel given the same airline (Turkish Airline), but I am not sure whether the accommodations and foods etc etc will be compromised. Resolved Question: Do you think addition by subtraction tactic is poor sportsmanship or a part of the game?

By this strategy I mean when a role player from a team or bad player starts a confrontation with a star on another team and it costs star to lose cool and be thrown out of the game. Examples of this in playoffs is when 2007 Horry slammed Nash into the boards and this resulted in Stoudemire and Diaw being suspended for game 5 home game which spurs won by 10-15 and this probably cost them game and series. 2007 Varejao often flopping on occasions. In retaliation Antonio McDyess elbowed him in neck and was ejected from game 5 and this opened up the game for Lebron who lit up with 47 points basically and the pistons did not have mcdyess who was their best low post scorer and their backup center and lost in a close game that went to overtime. ok, i am a very nice person who constantly gets trampled on by everyone else,fortunatley i have been able to get some friends but i really could use more. if you were in my school youd think id be like a star or something as everyone (even people i have never met) seem to know me, then why do i only have 10-15 true friend, i am part of a athletic team and have had some success with that, but i do have "issues". you know how they say to be yourself, well if i get too worked up i tend to go into "overdriveinsanecompletedleyoffmyrocker" mode, and usually when people see me this excited i lose them as potential friends, also, my brother is a real whiner and if you bother him too much he will even hit people he has only seen once, which ruined a few first impressions. i also tend to be ignored alot and tend to remain anonymous among other groups and get real jumpy if i feel exposed. i also have a really hard time making friends with people my own gender (male). so probably from this you can tell im really socially akward. however, over all when im calm im funny, and im real polite and all that stuff, except for those issues. now that you know a little about me it hopefully will be easier to help me out. here are the questions. how to isolate an individual from a group? someone seems to want to be friends with me, but we have NEVER talked to each other despite the fact we have seen each other for more than half a year im friends with a friend of this person, how do i ask to be cordially introduced without having to go to a party or something like that. types of body language to pick up on? should i act "normal" around people? and if they get me overexcited, them what? everyone plays CODMW2, everyone on my team and certain people i might want to be friends with play, BUT i really dont see the point of the popularity and in the game everyone has glitched to prestige 10 (whatever that is), opinions? i am also moving in the next 4 months or so to a different state and everyone knows this, is it still possible to still make friends here? sorry for the lentght and plz be seriuos more

Resolved Question: If I insert Nuvaring the day my period stars, will it end early?

I've been on Ortho TriCyclen Lo for 2 years and am switching to Nuvaring this month. I saw on the Nuvaring site that, when switching from the pill, you can start the ring any time before your seven days of "inactive" pills are up and still stay protected. I finished my "active" pills on Saturday, and usually get my withdrawl bleed (period) on Wednesday night or Thursday morning (4 days later) and it ends Saturday night or Sunday morning. I want to switch to a Thursday start instead of a Sunday start so that my period hits me at the beginning of the week instead of the beginning of the weekend. If I insert the Nuvaring Thursday morning (which will be about the time the bleeding starts), will be bleeding be cut short? I'm assuming it's safe to do and that I'll still be protected from pregnancy. The other option would be waiting until next week to start, but then I'll be unprotected that month. more

If there was a list of the greatest authors of all time, S.E Hinton would be one of those names, forever in glory on this great list of writers. In 1983 it was made into a box office hit at the movies and will always be an all time classic. Based on the 1966 novel ‘The Outsiders’ By S.E Hinton, a brilliant movie was born. Directed superbly by Francis Coppola, Presented by Universal studios, The outsiders was brought to life by the young cast members that are now some of Hollywoods biggest stars including Tom Cruise, Matt Dillon, Rob Lowe, Emilio Estevez, Patrick Swayze, Thomas Howell and Dianne Lane. In a divided society we look into the life of a young boy named Ponyboy Curtis and his friend Johnny Cade, they break the usual stereotype of a Greaser and enjoy the little things in life like sunsets, books and poems which is considered strange in the Greaser society. After being rushed in an ambulance to the hospital; Johnny suffered a serious back injury and was later told that he would never walk again. This resulted in the Socs and the Greasers getting ready for the ultimate showdown, from here anything could happen. Right now your probably pondering “how did this mess come to be?” well you will just have to watch the movie. Seeing as this movie is old, the effects aren’t as good as now days effects, but I think they perfectly captured the era and clothes, making everything look authentic, If I could criticise one thing it would be that sometimes the scenes were quite dark, making it difficult to see what was happening at the time, but this only happened when it was at night. The music in some places was very corny, but made an impact in the violent scenes making the movie much better to watch. When I saw the actors I was happy to see them when they were so young, I feel honoured that I saw a movie that launched their careers. Although some of the small plots and details were left out, Coppola kept extremely close to the book, creating a movie that has sound effects and visual scenes that are so amazing that books simply cannot capture it. Coppola created the movie so well, for a film being shot in the 1980’s I thought it was magnificent, with a great story line and a brilliant cast, I give my thanks to Coppola. All in all the movie was excellent, its a touching film of triumph and friendship, with action and thrills along the way, i highly recomend this film to anyone who has read the book. But was Manny Villar really one of the poorest of the poor as what his advertising has been projecting? A Chair Wrecker reader from Tondo who claimed to know the Villar family when they still resided there debunked that notion of Villar ever having been poor. This information was relayed to yours truly via our response email address. The former Villar family Tondo neighbor cited reference points to support his assertion that Manny Villar was never really poor — including the claim that Villar’s father used to have a “nikaladong (stainless steel clad)” private Jeep. During the 1950s, a nikaladong private Jeep is a status symbol in Tondo, definitely not the hallmark of a poor household. Considering how Manny Villar has been dodging the serious issues pertaining to his use of public office in order to add immense benefits and profits to his businesses, your Chair Wrecker decided to do some investigating. Guess what Manny Villar’s online bio revealed: “Manuel Villar Jr. was born on December 13, 1949 in Tondo, a densely populated district of Manila. Enrolling one’s child in a private school is a middle class value and option. The indigent kids who do manage to finish high school would tend to immediately learn a craft in order to be able to earn money right away. First class geek, determined soul, and party animal. I have my very own puppy, vintage tea cup, and a journal that is mine and only mine. Oh, and did I tell you that I am the Cinderella's best friend? The journal you are reading right now is all about how the whole thing happened, but with the truth. Here goes. I went over to Cinderella's house after I finished errands for my mother. As usual, the dastardly duo are causing havoc. That time I saw them dressing up Lucifer, their cat. Resolved Question: Ideas for Anniversary? I have made a little book...?

I have my anniversary with my bf and am really short on cash, so I will be going for sentimental value with a gift this year rather than price (which personally is what I prefer to give/get). So I started by making a list of 101 reasons why I love him, I have now also drawn a picture of us on the computer and printed it off which says at the top, "I love you as much as there are stars in the sky", and lastly I have added in an extract from my diary from the night we started going out (which for me, is really personal and difficult to share with anyone). I am currently attending a private school, and I am a sophmore. I have near-perfect grades, and participate in many extracirriculars. I have applied to a public magnet boarding school that has a math and science focus for the upcoming year. I will be hearing back from them in early May. However, my current school recently recieved a large grant, and is starting a program that extends current cirriculum by sending a few selected students to special programs and travel oppurtunities all over the world. The programs, which as many of you may know are very expensive, would be completely paid for. They said that they may possibly be able to send me to Japan, where I have always wanted to go, Harvard, or Oxford for some fo the programs. It would look great on a college app, and would be a really exciting experience. However, I really like the boarding school I have applied to. I've been there for shadowing, and it is amazing. the atmosphere really suits me. Which one should I choose if I am accepted to the boarding school? I am likely to be accepted, I have a great record and scored a perfect 800 on the writing portion of my SAT, and one point away from perfect on my math PSAT. I know that I am set up to be an academic "star" in the small private school setting. However, if I attend the boarding school, I will be just one of many intelligent kids. I'm having trouble writing the conclusion for my essay my essay: To Kill a Mockingbird: Book vs. Movie One of the biggest battles between readers and movie goers is what form of a story has more artistic expression. When this concept is applied to the story of To Kill a Mockingbird, you must decide between the wonderfully acted movie directed by Robert Mulligan, with screenplay by Horton Foote, and starring Gregory Peck as Atticus; or the amazingly written book from 1960 by Harper Lee. Whichever you pick the story revolves around three children: “Jem” Finch, his sister “Scout”, their best friend “Dill”; and the community they all share. Though in more broad terms, it centers the trial of a colored man accused of raping a white woman; his lawyer, Atticus Finch; and the physical and mental destruction racism causes in a community. Although both forms convey the basic lesson to be learned in this story, the novel does a much more convincing and artistic job of getting this point across. A good starting point is talking about the overall presentation and context these two formats have set before us. A movie can give one kind of experience to the reader, but a novel is completely different in a mentally stimulating way. Screenwriters are justifiably criticized for their adaptations of books because they cannot stay true to the story, include all of the details, and comply with the imagination of the people who read the novel. Though some of the sequences in the book are not clear, they let the reader think and decide for themselves what is going on. A fantastic example of this is when Scout is trapped inside her Halloween costume during the confrontation between Jem, Boo, herself, and Mr. Ewell. The movie makes this event clearer entirely losing the effect of Scout’s confusion which adds to not only this scene, but the whole end of the story. Another subject the novel has captured far better is character development. The book takes more time showing you how the characters behave, and describing their individual attributes. This portrayal of each character adds different details to the major conflicts in the story that help with foreshadowing, setting the mood, and even presenting the main theme. This is well shown when Scout spends the afternoon with Aunt Alexandra and her missionary circle. They are talking about the Mrunas and Mrs. Merriweather says "you are a fortunate girl [Scout]. You live in a Christian home with Christian folks in a Christian town. Out there in J. Grimes Everett's land there's nothing but sin and squalor." Through the way the women are talking about the people from the African tribe you can tell the previous statement would most likely be agreed upon by the others in the room. This provides a basic incite to the racism that has become common place in Maycomb, setting a less comfortable mood that prepares you for the finding of Tom’s death. The movie forgoes this scene completely very much taking from the story, and the artistry the book provided. Many people think that the movie is more artistic because it has taken words and brought them to life; or because a movie is easier to sit through it took extra artistry to make it more pleasing to the viewer then the book, but neither of these common misconceptions is true. The book is a better form of art because it started out as nothing but blank paper, black ink, and the glorious open space of Harper Lee’s mind. The movie, on the other hand, is nothing but a re-written, dissected copy of a great artistic endeavor. Though the film version of this classic novel tries to pose the same main idea as Harper Lee infused in to the book, it misses much of the amazing small detail that makes everything artistically pleasing. The people who find the movie more artistic because it requires less effort on their part are simply mindless and lazy without the ability to let the story expand through their imagination. Many times the actors, places or extra dialogue on the screen are what the reader pictured in their mind. Can someone help me please? more
